Fans Have Rare Privilege To See Lionel Messi Rewrite World Cup History
Every touch carried a sense of history. Lionel Messi scored twice against Austria on Monday to become the FIFA World Cup's all-time leading scorer, while leading an Argentina side that looks more dangerous and connected with each match. For the first time in his career, Messi is no longer weighed down by questions about winning "the big one" after leading Argentina to a World Cup title in 2022. Now, playing with a renewed sense of freedom and joy, the 38-year-old may be showing the best version of himself yet. During FOX Sports' post-game show, Peter Schmeichel and Clarence Seedorf couldn't help but admire Messi after his 18th World Cup goal and another Argentina victory. "Its a privilege to be able to witness his life," Seedorf said. "Greatness is happening every time we see this guy [Messi]. The question is, does he have any intention to stop? That last goal says so much about his ambition still." Messi has said this could be his final World Cup, but Seedorf hopes that won't be the case. He believes Messi is playing with a freedom and hunger that have elevated his game to another level. "He was more hungry than all the other players looking at the ball at that time," Seeford said. "That says everything about his mentality. Hes on a different level. His reading of the match. When he needs to be activated. When he needs to help in defense. Its brilliance all the time." Seedorf believes Messi is playing with more freedom and joy now that the pressure of chasing a World Cup title is behind him. With the final piece of his legacy secured, Messi looks as dangerous as ever while enjoying the game more than ever. "Thats gone now," Seedorf said. "Now, were seeing Messi really at the top of his game. His mindset. The reading of the match. The touches. The brilliance. We see it in everything and the joy. Im loving seeing him smile so much." Argentina has won both of its group-stage matches, but concerns have emerged over the lack of goals from anyone other than Messi. Schmeichel believes the team understands what it takes, slowly building into the tournament and figuring out what works best for them. "They are slowly building into the tournament," Schmeichel said. "They know what it takes. They have the winning formula and you can read it through the matches." As reigning champions, Schmeichel sees no real concern with Argentinas start and believes they can still go deep in the tournament. Seedorf agrees, adding that its only a matter of time before Argentinas offense finds its rhythm. "No, it doesnt worry me," Seedorf said. "It means that the other killers that they have likeLautaro Martnez are still right there and [Julin] Alvarez. We know all these guys can score goals. Im sure when needed, other guys will stand up."

Jeremiyah Love: Team goals are my only goals
Jeremiyah led the nation in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and overall touchdowns each of the past two seasons at Notre Dame. In 2025, he won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's best running back and was a Heisman Trophy semifinalist. The Cardinals used the No. 3 overall pick on Love, and he likely will get plenty of chances to do what he did the past two seasons for the Fighting Irish.Love, though, said he has no personal goals for his rookie season."I've learned throughout my time just playing football, the personal goals aren't going to get you really where you want to get to. It's all about the team at the end of the day," Love said Monday, via NFL.com. "As long as you do your part on the team, usually you'll get the personal accolades and the personal goals that you have in your mind. So, in my mind, my goal for myself is to jell really well with this team and do whatever coach [Mike] LaFleur wants me to do, and do it to the best of my ability."Love is the favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year ahead of Fernando Mendoza and Carnell Tate, but the 2025 All-American isn't even thinking about the award."That's kind of how I've always been," Love said. "Never really been the type to set . . . well, I've always been the type to set goals for myself, but they've always been connected to the team in some type of way. Like last year, I wanted to win the Doak Walker Award in college, wanted to win the Heisman, but those things weren't going to happen unless I did what I had to do for my team and play my role for the team. Both of them go hand in hand, so I kind of try to make everything team-oriented."At the end of the day, it's a team sport. You can't do anything by yourself, especially as a running back. Got to have a good O-line, got to have a quarterback that can read defenses and see a lot of things, and you've got to have receivers that can take the top off to lighten up the box, as well. Everything goes hand in hand, so I try not to make things personal and make it all team-oriented. Because if the team is good, a lot of times you're going to do good as well."As good as Love was last season, Notre Dame did not make the College Football Playoff. In 2024, Love played through a knee injury in the National Championship loss to Ohio State but had only six touches for 8 yards.

Goals are being scored at a record pace at the World Cup. The ball is one reason for the surge
Its been goals galore so far at the World Cup.The tournament has been one of the highest-scoring in history so far and produced nearly 25% more scoring than the same span of games in the previous World Cup. One reason for the increase in scoring might be the ball that FIFA is using for this tournament. FIFA says the ball has been designed with deep seams to produce optimal in-flight stability, and players and coaches say it has been rocketing toward goalkeepers at a high velocity. There is also added grip to help striking and dribbling the ball in wet or humid conditions. This ball is as fast as a cannon ball. I think today and the last couple of days, you saw if you kick the ball in the right position, its extremely difficult to save," Austria coach Ralf Rangnick said. The games are also running longer because of increased stoppage time related to hydration breaks that are new this tournament, allowing more scoring opportunities. And the tournament has a bigger talent gap because of the expanded 48-team field that debuted this year. The result: Fans were treated to 121 goals in the first 40 games of the tournament, and many of them came from internationally known players.Premier League players are scoring the mostMore than half the goals scored so far in the tournament were by players from the top three professional leagues in England, Germany and Spain. The English Premier League leads the way.The trend was on full display over the weekend in the match between the Netherlands and Sweden, a 5-1 triumph for the Dutch team. All six goals in the match were scored by players who competed in the Premier League in the 2025-26 season.I think the Premier League is more intense than this World Cup, said Gabriel Martinelli, a Brazil player from Arsenal. But its certainly still a very beautiful World Cup, with high-quality and intense matches.Real Madrid, Inter Miami and Liverpool were the clubs whose players have produced the most goals. Miami, of course, is all because of one man Lionel Messi. In addition to 28 goals from the Premier League, 16 came from the German league, 11 from the Spanish league, seven from the French league and five from the Italian league.Major League Soccer saw its players score eight times. Messi had a hat trick in Argentinas opening match and another two on Monday. The other three MLS goals came from FC Dallas Petar Musa of Croatia, Atlanta Uniteds Matas Galarza of Paraguay and Portland Timbers Finn Surman of New Zealand. When FIFA announced the official squads, there were 200 players based in England at the club level, nearly two times more than the 109 players based in Germany. The tallies for the goals were made based on the players clubs when the official squad announcements were made.Real Madrid and Liverpool at the topReal Madrid players scored six times three with Frances Kylian Mbapp, two with Brazils Vincius Jnior and one with Englands Jude Bellingham.Madrid did not have any players called up for Spains national team for the first time ever. It signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea during the tournament, though, thus making one of its own a part of the World Cup with La Roja.Liverpool got three goals from Dutch players two by Cody Gapko and one by Virgil van Dijk. Another goal came by Swedens Alexander Isak, and the other was scored by Egypt's Mohamed Salah, who was still listed as a Liverpool player when the squads were announced.Bayern Munich had four goals from its players a brace by Englands Harry Kane and one each by Germanys Jamal Musiala and Colombias Luis Daz.Bayern was the team with the second-most players called up for the tournament with 18. Manchester City was the first with 19, though its only two goals at the World Cup so far came from Norway's Erling Haaland. How many goals are we talking about? With 121 goals scored from 88 different players in the first 40 games of the tournament, the average per game was at three goals. There were only three 0-0 draws, and eight of the goals were own-goals.The tournament is on pace to shatter the 172-goal record from Qatar in 2022. The records aren't an apples-to-apples comparison because the 2022 edition only had 64 matches compared with 104 this year. But the pace for 64 matches this year is at almost 194 goals, well beyond the record from four years ago.The trend in goal-scoring goes beyond the World Cup. The Champions League has set new records in the past two seasons: 3.27 goals per game in 2024-2025 to 3.47 goals per game in the 2025-2026 season.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/FIFA-World-Cup
