WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMLeft Chasing Messi, Mbapp And Haaland, USA's Folarin Balogun Eyes HistoryU.S. World Cup Team Training Base (Irvine, Calif.) As he walked to his spot in front of the microphones and cameras before the USA's Monday morning practice session, Folarin Balogun trailed the incomparable Lionel Messi and two other players by a single goal as the top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. By the time the Stars and Stripes striker was done speaking to the assembled media, Messi had increased his lead by another goal. And then the GOAT added another before the U.S. squads practice had even finished. Things change quickly at World Cups. It's a lesson that 24-year-old Balogun who jumped out to an early leadin the Golden Boot race with two beautiful strikes in the Americans' tournament-opening win over Paraguay has learned just two games into his maiden trip to global soccers marquee quadrennial event. "Its annoying," Balogun joked with reporters before Messi scored both of defending champion Argentinas goals in Mondays 2-0 stroll against Austria. Messi had a hat trick against Algeria the game before. Kylian Mbapp whose eight goals led all players four years ago in Qatar scored twice against Senegal in Frances curtain raiser; he added two more in Les Blues' second match, a 3-0 win over Iraq. Norways Erling Haaland, possibly the most lethal striker on the planet, also kicked off the tournament with a brace and added another pair Monday against Senegal. "Seeing players like Messi and Mbapp, Haaland theyre so inevitable," Balogun said. "Theyre scoring a goal a game. Sometimes more." To keep up, the prolific New York-born, London-raised forward who told me last week that claiming the Golden Boot is among his aspirations this summer must keep pace. Yet while the hard-working Monaco forward has been named Player of the Match in each of the USAs first two games and though he created the own-goal that ended up being the game-winner over Australia Friday in Seattle he didnt find the net against the Socceroos. And hes unlikely to during the World Cup co-hosts final group stage game Thursday vs. Trkiye in Los Angeles. With Mauricio Pochettinos team having already clinched first place in Group D, the U.S. coach is expected to rest most or all his usual starters. Because Balogun was one of four Americans to be shown a yellow card in one of the first two group contests, Pochettino would risk losing his go-to goalscorer for the single-elimination round of 32 on July 1 in Santa Clara, California, if Balogun was cautioned against the Turks. As such, hes almost certain not to play even if that means sliding further down the World Cup scoring chart. Balogun understands this. Were it up to him, though, hed be in the lineup on Thursday. "I want to play," he said. "But it's also important to be smart. I wouldn't want to pick up a yellow card and miss the round of 32." Considered possibly the most complete striker the U.S. program has ever had, Balogun will have a chance to make history in the knockout round. Landon Donovan is the only American to score three times at the same World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1930, when Bert Patenaude managed four. Donovan's all-time U.S. record of five World Cup goals could also be in reach if Pochettinos team can make a deep run on home soil. "For sure," Balogun said when asked if hes eying Donovans mark. "I want to continue to score goals." Hes not ruling out the Golden Boot yet, either. For Balogun, scoring as consistently as the likes of Messi, Mbapp and Haaland remains the ultimate personal goal. "For me, it's just about trying to get to that level," he said. "Im sure I've got the potential in me to do that."0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 6 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNets trade Nic Claxton to Bulls, receive Julius Randle from T'WolvesThe Brooklyn Nets finished the 2025-26 NBA season with a 20-62 record that made it clear that the team had a long way to go to improve before next season. While Brooklyn has been allowing everyone to speculate when it comes to who they will be taking with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, they have also decided to make waves before the event even begins.ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday night that the Nets traded center Nic Claxton to the Chicago Bulls in a three-team deal in which they received forward Julius Randle and the No. 28 pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Assuming that the details are final as of this writing, the Timberwolves received the No. 33 pick from the Nets while the Bulls appear to have just received Claxton.Claxton, 27, is coming off one of the best seasons of his seven-year career as he averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 57.1% from the field and 61.6% from the free-throw line. Over the course of a tough rebuilding season, Claxton showed more of his ability to pass the basketball as one of the hubs within head coach Jordi Fernandez's offense and now, he'll try to be that kind of player for the Bulls.Randle, 31, had a solid season for Minnesota as he averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 48.1% from the floor and 31.5% from deep. For his ability, Randle is on a fairly-valuable contract as he is due $69 million over the next two years and while he would be the oldest player on the roster, he could provide a veteran presence while showing the ropes to the younger players on the team. With Brooklyn getting the No. 28 pick, it's fair to wonder who they will be targeting with the pick given they have been connected to players expected to be taken early in the Lottery. Even someone like Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr., whom the Nets recently brought in for a workout, is generally expected to be taken closer to the Lottery than the second round. For context, Bleacher Report's consensus mock draft has Duke guard Isaiah Evans being taken with the No. 28 pick. The Nets make the move that some have anticipated by trading Nic Claxton to the Bulls while acquiring Julius Randle and the 28th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft for the 33rd pick. Randle, 31, averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game on 48% shooting from the field. https://t.co/5DtEzD6ygN Sharif Phillips-Keaton (@SharifKeaton) June 23, 2026Timberwolves free up significant salary with the remaining two years of Randle's deal, giving them more flexibility to retain Ayo Dosunmu and use exceptions. Nets acquire a three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA forward in Randle into their cap space -- plus a first-rounder. https://t.co/c3gcHfZpEg Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 23, 2026This article originally appeared on Nets Wire: Nets trade Nic Claxton to Bulls, receive Julius Randle from T'Wolves0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 16 Views 0 önizleme
