WWW.FOXSPORTS.COM4 Takeaways From Croatia's Gritty Win Over Panama At World CupAfter a stuttering first half and a hard-fought second, Croatia came out victorious with a 1-0 win against Panam in Toronto, giving the team three valuable points at the World Cup one behind Group L leaders England and second-placed Ghana, who drew 0-0 earlier today. This now means that there is everything to play for on the final match day for Croatia, England, and Ghana as a victory could grant any of them top of the group. As for Panam, its sadly the end of the road for the CONCACAF side and, despite a valiant effort, it definitely caused many headaches against Croatia. Here are my takeaways: 1. Croatia Snapped Out Of Its Snoozefest When Croatia wakes up, it can be very dangerous. The game's only goal proved that. The beginning of the match was impressive for Panam, looking more composed and creative towards Croatia when heading forward on the counter. Canaleros coach Thomas Christiansen had them organized against the UEFA side and even offered a threat going forward from the wings. As the game evolved, Croatia finalists in 2018 and third-placed finishers in 2022 held more possession, but it was still Panamwith the best opportunities to score. In the end, the first half ended scoreless. Zlatko Dali knew that his Croatian side had to turn up the intensity, so his players obliged. Thanks to the substitute Ante Budimir, who scored his first goal for the national team after a year, Croatia took the lead. The only goal of the evening was a thing of beauty. Marco Pasalic wonderfully flicked the ball for his left back Josip Stanisic, who overtook him on the right wing and delivered one of the best crosses of the tournament so far. The ball was so good that all Budimir had to do was tap it in. There was a fight from Panam and a lot of heart, but in the end, it wasnt enough. As for Croatia, this was a solid win. But Dali knows more will be needed against Ghana, which will be an absolute test in Philadelphia. 2. Modri Joins Elite Company With 200th Appearance In a tournament filled with veteran players showing they can still make magic, let's give some spotlight to Croatia's Luka Modri. The 40-year-old midfielder joined Cristiano Ronaldo, Bader Al-Mutawa and Lionel Messi to play his 200th match with his national team. A magnificent achievement from one of the best players of his position in the history of the modern game. When you watch Croatia, it is so evident that Modri continues to pull all the strings. Who knows what will happen to this team when he retires? Perhaps Martin Baturina will become the next talisman for this team, asthe23-year-old attacking midfielder was very good. But for now, Modri remains king. For 80 minutes, he was excellent once again. 3. Panams Cristian Martnez Had A Night To Remember Despite the loss, the CONCACAF side came to fight, and it was mainly thanks to the impact of Cristian Martnez on the right wing. Lets not forget that the midfielder who plays for Israeli side Ironi Kiryat Shmona was going up against Joko Gvardiol and this did not phase him. Martnez was a consistent handful against the Manchester City defender and did not quit. Martnez had trouble finding a club on a consistent basis until landing at Ironi Kiryat Shmona. For the national team, after missing out on 2018, and Panam not making it to 2022, he was finally making the most of this moment. Panam may be out but to follow Martnezs lead, they can be very proud of what they gave tonight. 4. Croatia Needs To Be More Dangerous Inside The Box The Croatians ended up being the winners and had more opportunities, but Panam had more chances inside the box. Croatia is very shy about entering the dangerous zones and, whats more than that, it actually invites the opposition to penetrate. Moving forward, especially if it makes it to the knockout stages, Croatia has to both attack the box and defend its own with more aggression. There is all to play for in Group L for the battle for top. Croatia, now on three points, faces Ghana on four points on Saturday in Philadelphia at the same time England plays Panam at New York New Jersey Stadium.0 Comments 0 Shares 7 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Draft: Thunder try to address Wemby problem by grabbing Michigan big man Aday Mara at No. 12The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted 7-foot-3 Michigan center Aday Mara at No. 12 overall Tuesday night without having to trade up.That's a preposterously good result for executive vice president and general manager Sam Presti, who handed coach Mark Daigneault a ton of size to throw at San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama.Mara isn't just raw size. He's got great timing as a shot-blocker, he can make a wide array of passes, has spacing upside and could turn into a full-time starting center down the line. For the Thunder to grab Mara like this, entirely organically, is almost a missed opportunity by rival teams, which could have selected Maya and held him hostage in order to extract assets from Presti and Co.This further underlines how smart it is to go the draft-pick route, as the Thunder have for several years. Well-run teams end up in these situations where they can drastically improve their own positions by having done the work previously and remaining focused on asset accumulation. The Thunder will also have a ton of optionality with Isaiah Hartenstein, with whom they hold a team option. With Mara in the fold, they can breathe easy, decline the option and attempt to re-sign Hartenstein at a discount. If he refuses, they should have enough size to remain competitive.0 Comments 0 Shares 6 Views 0 Reviews -

WWW.KSAT.COMAfter a difficult rebuild, the Wizards have new hope after adding Dybantsa with the No. 1 pickIt has been nearly a half-century since Washington was a real championship contender in the NBA.Now, AJ Dybantsa's arrival represents a potential turning point for a franchise that could really use one.The Wizards took Dybantsa with the first overall pick in Tuesday night's NBA draft. The 6-foot-9 freshman averaged 25.5 points at BYU last season. Born in Boston, Dybantsa played at Utah Prep in high school before staying in state for his one year in college. When Washington won the draft lottery, there was speculation the Utah Jazz might try to trade up from No. 2 to take Dybantsa, but ultimately the Wizards kept the pick and selected him.I was just super confident. I've been betting on myself for a while now, Dybantsa said. Since about ninth grade I've been No. 1, so I didn't really plan on dropping in the draft. The Wizards won an NBA title in 1978, back when they were called the Bullets. But they have not won 50 games since 1979, and that was also the last time they so much as reached the conference finals. In between periods of total futility, they've occasionally had entertaining players and interesting teams. But a true superstar capable of delivering a championship? That's been for other franchises.Washington blew the top pick in 2001, taking Kwame Brown. The Wizards fared better in 2010 with John Wall at No. 1 overall, and he at least helped them get past the first round of the postseason. That era eventually ran its course, and not even a brief visit from Russell Westbrook in 2020-21 could make Washington particularly relevant. Recently, the Wizards have embarked on a significant rebuild that yielded a record of 50-196 over the past three seasons.Washington drafted big man Alex Sarr at No. 2 overall in 2024, and the roster also includes recent first-round picks Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, Will Riley and Cam Whitmore. Even before they won this year's lottery, there were signs the Wizards would be a lot more interesting in 2026-27. They traded for Trae Young and Anthony Davis last season, and although Davis didn't play at all for Washington and Young barely did, Dybantsa is joining a team that has some intriguing talent around him.Obviously they have a great young core, and the potential is there, Dybantsa said. Them adding me, I think I can help them a little bit. Them re-signing Trae Young, them having A.D. and having good vets along with our young core. I think we can do big things.Dybantsa has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant, his favorite player. That's fitting, because Durant has been a white whale of sorts for Wizards fans, since he's from D.C. but hasn't played there while in college or the pros.Dybantsa's full name is Anicet Francois Dybantsa Jr. He wore flag pins Tuesday for Jamaica and the Republic of Congo, where his mother and father are from.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/nba0 Comments 0 Shares 73 Views 0 Reviews
