WWW.FOXSPORTS.COMLos Cafeteros Advance: 4 Takeaways From Colombia's World Cup Round Of 32 Win vs. GhanaColombia became the final team to advance to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 win over Ghana on Friday night at Kansas City Stadium. While it was just a one-goal margin of victory, the result was never in doubt: Colombia scored first, maintained consistent pressure throughout the 90 minutes, and, most importantly, played a clean game with very few mistakes. The win now sets the stage for Colombia to play Switzerland in Vancouver on July 7 in what should be a very interesting clash of well-coached teams who have been improving throughout the tournament and whose players stick to a disciplined game plan. One thing is for certain: Colombia is one of the best-supported teams at this World Cup, as every game has been a "home game," and tonight in Kansas City was a special atmosphere. It was a very loud sea of yellow that clearly had a positive impact on the Colombian team. Here are my thoughts on the game: 1. Suarez Impresses In Tough Task It is never an easy job for any player to get subbed into a game in the opening minutes to replace an injured teammate. Players asked to do this have little time to prepare to enter the game and have not been training for what has essentially become an unexpected start. Luis Surez did a fantastic job when he had to replace Jhon Crdoba in the eighth minute. Just six minutes after coming on, he made an excellent cross from the right side of the box to set up John Arias for the opening goal. It was the most important play of the game as Ghanas game plan was designed to be very defensive and try to create occasional chances on counterattacks or set pieces. The last thing Ghana wanted to do was try to make a comeback against a more skilled and possession-oriented team. Suarez put Colombia into a great position and Ghana into a bad one just minutes after he came on as an early substitute. In the second half, Diaz continued to put immense pressure on Colombia. He had a goal called back for offside, and minutes later, he forced a big save from Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. 2. Colombia Did Not Make Many Mistakes Colombia knew it was going to have a huge majority of possession in this game, but the important task for Nstor Lorenzos team was to be disciplined when it had to defend, and not make many mistakes with that ball that would let Ghana run aggressively in transition. Overall, Lorenzo should be pleased with his teams effort. Offensively, Colombia completed 91% of its passes, with only very few of its incomplete passes allowing Ghana a dangerous counter. Defensively, Colombia blocked four of Ghanas first six shots on goal and forced a wave of turnovers to limit Ghanas dangerous possessions. This was an excellent performance from Colombia in how it stuck to its disciplined gameplan despite Ghana trying hard to turn it into a physical grind. The game did get physical at times, but Colombia was able to always play the game on its terms. 3. Ghana Thrown Off Early From the early goings in the game, Ghana was in a bad position. This game was a clash of opposing styles. Colombia wanted to play an open and fluid game while Ghana wanted it to become a slow-paced physical grind. Ultimately, Ghana was never able to get the game on its terms. The early goal changed that quite a bit because Ghana was then not able to sit as deep as it wanted (as it did against England). After all, it needed a score. More importantly, while the game became physical, Ghana only had 10 fouls (and many of those were late in the game). Far too often, Ghana could not get close enough to the ball to foul. Colombia actually committed more fouls (a total of 14), which was to its benefit as it slowed Ghanas run down and that neutralized Ghanas best hopes of scoring. Despite that, it was a good tournament for Ghana, considering that its head coach, Carlos Querioz, was hired in April and only began working with the team in the camp leading up to the World Cup. Querioz was tasked with fixing a defense that completely collapsed during the friendlies in the March windows. Queiroz was able to get this team to punch above its weight. It defeated Panama, drew England, and remained within striking distance of Croatia and Colombia. The team was eliminated tonight, but the tournament went about as well as it could have reasonably hoped. 4. Ati-Zigi Kept Ghana Close Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was by far the best player for Ghana in the game. Colombia had eight shots on goal while Ghana did not get a single shot on target. Ati-Zigi made seven saves and many of them were of very high quality. He denied close headers from Johan Mojica in the first half stoppage time and Davinson Snchez in the 81st minute. In the 58th minute, Ati-Zigi made a big stop on Luis Diaz's right-footed shot. This game could have, and should have, been lopsided in favor of Colombia. But the reason why Ghana was always within reach was because of the play of Ati-Zigi.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 191 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen -

WWW.FOXSPORTS.COM'Can Only Happen In America': USA Team Embracing Americana Ahead For 250th BirthdaySEATTLE Surrounded by his U.S. mens national team players, Mauricio Pochettino went right down the middle. On the eve of Americas 250th birthday, the Argentine-born coach celebrated Americas pastime by throwing out the first pitch at the Seattle Mariners game. The sold-out crowd, many wearing red-and-white striped USA soccer jerseys, cheered for both their coach and their team. "That sort of stuff can only happen in America," a smiling Folarin Balogun said earlier on Friday. The U.S. squad has become a source of national pride as Americans gather to celebrate the Fourth of July. Its run so far at this World Cup on home soil with Belgium waiting in the round of 16 here on Monday has given supporters across the country something to rally around, a welcome contrast to the often-divisive news cycle. From fans all over the world learning about Waffle House and ranch dressing, to Scotlands Tartan Army taking over Boston, to Pochettino joining his players in singing "Take Me Home, Country Roads," this tournament has delivered plenty of memorable moments. "Its a place that is exactly as advertised in a lot of ways its free, its beautiful, the people are nice and kind," U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner told a small group of reporters after the victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. "Of course, everywhere you go in the world, there are scary stories. But to actually have seen some people having the time of their lives in our country, its been amazing. "People are always saying, What do you want from this World Cup? And I just say I want us to be gracious hosts and good stewards to people who come to the United States and really feel our culture, and I want us to welcome these people with open arms. I think weve done a great job. Lifelong memories for a lot of people." There were questions entering this tournament about how Americans would receive the World Cup and whether soccer would capture everyones attention. The long-term impact won't be known for years advancing to the quarterfinals or further will help. But the short-term one is undeniable. Hotel guests in Seattle gathered in a lobby to watch Egypt outlast Australia in a penalty shootout. Dallas police officers greeted Norway by performing the "Viking Row" on the airport tarmac. Social media erupted as Cape Verde pushed defending champion Argentina to the brink of penalties. The U.S. players have felt that energy throughout the tournament and want to channel it on the field. "The fact that its here on our shores, the fan passion is coming to light, were creating our own new sort of things with Country Roads after the game its like the college football scene mixing with the U.S. [Soccer] scene," Turner said. "And what I've loved about it is that it's not like we're trying to be that European culture. We're not saying we need to chant like the English chant, or chant like the Germans chant. We're taking on our own traditions and cultures, and I think that's the way it should be. We really needed this tournament in order to find our identity alongside our fans." Even Pochettino who played with Diego Maradona and coached at Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea is having a ball. Hes become a fan of country music, specifically Ella Langley, as well as Teddy Swims. Hes leading crowds in "U-S-A" cheers and learning new words, too. "Sometimes someone will say something to him in a meeting, and it sounds super American slang, and hes like, Huh?" Christian Pulisic joked earlier in the tournament. "And I just find it so funny. But it feels like hes really in tune with it. Like, Im in his office yesterday, and hes listening to country music, and its just funny to see. But then he also brings his Argentinian culture and the staff and shows us things from there. It's a unique bond with the group for sure." Pochettinos now-famous "Why not us?" mantra has seeped into the team, reflecting a belief that fits within the American sporting identity. "Were American, we dont take s---," Sebastian Berhalter said a few weeks ago when asked what ideals Pochettino has brought to the group. "Even though hes Argentinian, he has that mindset of like, Look, this is what we do, and this is who we are, and this is what America is about. I think even from an outside perspective, he showed us Americans what were about, and he really drills that into us." A win against Belgium on Monday would be historic, marking the first time the U.S. has ever won two knockout games at a World Cup. The programs best finish in the modern era was the quarterfinals in 2002. This team embraces the responsibility of keeping this journey going. "I think its exciting," Tyler Adams told reporters Friday ahead of training. "I think as a team, we want to leave our mark on the game and a legacy behind. I want it to be more than just what this moment has created and the hype around it. If we're talking about the team and the success they've had two years from now, then we've done something right. "We want to have success, and we know the further that we go, the more success we're going to have and the growth of the game is going to grow."0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 116 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen -
