Just over one week into NBA free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers have filled many of their roster holes. But one a legitimate starting two-way forward remains.The pickings are slim when it comes to filling that hole, but Jonathan Kuminga, a 23-year-old forward, remains the one available free agent who has a chance of filling that need at a high level. While Kuminga hasn't tapped into a good amount of his potential and has questionable intangibles, his natural ability on both ends of the floor aligns with what the Lakers want and need at the wing or forward spot.They reportedly met with him last week, but nothing happened. Yet there is reportedly mutual interest between the two parties, according to Khobi Price of the California Post.The Lakers may lack the salary-cap flexibility to sign Kuminga to a satisfactory contract straight-up. But the Atlanta Hawks, the team he finished this past season with, are willing to execute a sign-and-trade, and better yet, they're willing to take Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt, who is seen as a negative contract across the league because of his extreme limitations on offense.Per Price, the Hawks want the Lakers to include their lone available first-round pick swap to make such a deal happen."The main option that could help the Lakers acquire Kuminga: A sign and trade with the Hawks, which would allow Kuminga to receive a higher salary than the Lakers are able to offer Kuminga as an unrestricted free agent."A source told the Post the Hawks are willing to execute a sign-and-trade with the Lakers around the framework of Kuminga going to L.A. and the Hawks receiving Jarred Vanderbilt and the Lakers 2032 first-round pick swap the lone option the Lakers have of trading a first-round pick this summer. Los Angeles also has three second-round picks (Wizards two picks and its own 2033 pick) available to trade."Kumingas contract would have to be for at least three or four seasons (not including option seasons), and the first season must be fully guaranteed, if the Lakers acquired him in a sign and trade."Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times recently reported that the Lakers are eyeing a two-year, $20 million contract for Kuminga. There are a few other teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are also interested in snagging Kuminga.He is a very athletic 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward who can finish strong at the rim, especially in transition, and his wingspan of nearly seven feet gives him the ability to be an excellent defender. However, he has been a below-average 3-point shooter for most of his five years in the NBA, and his focus, dedication, motor and attitude have been question marks.He has career averages of 12.5 points on 50.2% field-goal shooting and 4.2 rebounds in 22.1 minutes a game. Adam Vinatieri, the NFL's career scoring leader who was also widely considered the best clutch kicker in league history, will have one more celebration on the Indianapolis Colts' home turf this season when he's inducted into the team's Ring of Honor. Team officials announced Wednesday that Vinatieri would be honored during the Colts' game against the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 18, a little more than two months after his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Vinatieri will become the Colts' 21st Ring of Honor honoree five years after he officially retired. He'll join a group that includes former teammates and fellow Hall of Famers Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Dwight Freeney, as well as Robert Mathis, Jeff Saturday and Reggie Wayne. Tony Dungy, the Hall of Fame coach for whom Vinatieri played; Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian, who signed Vinatieri as a free agent before the 2006 season; and late team owner Jim Irsay are also in the Colts' ring. The four-time Super Bowl champion shocked many when he left New England as the franchise's career scoring leader after 10 seasons and wound up with longtime rival Indianapolis. But Vinatieri was far from finished and went on to break the Colts' career scoring mark, too. Though Vinatieri's stats tell one tale: He finished his career with 2,673 points and as the league's all-time leader in field goals made (599), field goal attempts (715), consecutive field goals made (44) and 100-plus point seasons (21). But it was his penchant for making kicks in the toughest conditions and most crucial moments that stuck with him. His 45-yard field goal into swirling winds amid snowy conditions for New England in a January 2002 AFC divisional round game tied it and sent the Patriots into overtime against the then-Oakland Raiders. He then kicked a 23-yarder to start New England's trek to coach Bill Belichick's first Super Bowl. Two weeks later, Vinatieri did it again by making a 43-yarder in the waning seconds to give the Patriots their first Super Bowl title with a 20-17 victory over the then-St. Louis Rams in much more ideal conditions. Vinatieri 41-yarder with 4 seconds left broke a 29-29 tie with the Carolina Panthers for New England's second Super Bowl title two years later. Vinatieri continued to excel in Indy, where he first played inside a dome stadium and later a retractable roof stadium. In January 2007, the South Dakota State alum made five field goals in a divisional round game that featured no touchdowns at Baltimore. The 15-6 victory set up an AFC title game rematch between the Colts and Patriots, this time in Indy with Vinatieri on the opposite sideline from Tom Brady and his ex-teammates. Vinatieri's playoff run continued as the Colts reached their first Super Bowl since the franchise moved to Indianapolis. Vinatieri made three more field goals and captured yet another ring while finishing that postseason with 49 points and 14 field goals, both one-season playoff records, while becoming the first player to make three or more field goals in four consecutive postseason games. Vinatieri ranks second all-time in NFL victories (242), regular-season wins (221) and postseason wins (21) and is one of five players who appeared in a game at age 46. He's the only player in league history to make 250 or more field goals and scored 1,000 points for two teams. Per Fox Sports, Englands dramatic 3-2 win drew 21,742,000 viewers on its network. Combined with 23.1 million U.S. viewers on Telemundo, that adds up to roughly 44.8 million viewers. Thats more than the estimated 42 million U.S. viewers who tuned in Monday to watch Belgiums 4-1 rout of USA across Fox, Telemundo and Peacock. Numbers rival those of NFC/AFC championship gamesIt adds up to record viewership for a soccer game in the U.S. And theyre numbers that rival those of NFL playoff games. Per Pro Football Talk, the NFC and AFC championship games last season drew an average of 47.4 million viewers. The numbers are astounding and a testament to the success of this years World Cup being held across North American cities. And they dont account for the estimated 60 million TV viewers in Mexico or anywhere else around the world who watched England-Mexico. Why did Mexico-England outdraw USA-Belgium?The USA-Belgium numbers remain remarkable. U.S. interest in soccer reached a fever pitch just before kickoff Monday night, and the ratings demonstrate that. But that excitement was quickly doused as Belgium asserted early control of the game and never let go in what ended up as a disappointing exit for the U.S. host team.For U.S. fans and neutral observers, it added up to a tough watch, and its easy to presume that a significant chunk of viewers tuned out as the game progressed. Mexico-England, by contrast, was a thriller from start to finish in which England prevailed despite playing a man down in front of a raucous Mexico City crowd. Add in that it was one of the most anticipated games yet of the tournament, and the ratings make sense, as remarkable as they are.
