Why England Shouldn't Fear 'Mortal' Lionel Messi Ahead Of Semifinal Clash
Lionel Messi is "more mortal now", former England international Gary Pallister has told GOAL, with the Three Lions considered to be capable of ending Argentina's World Cup title defense. Thomas Tuchel's side are due to lock horns with the reigning champions on Wednesday, with questions already being asked of how best to contain an evergreen all-time great. Messi The GOAT Aiming To Defend His World Cup Title Despite being 39 years of age, eight-time Ballon dOr winner Messi has been showing no sign of slowing down. He may come into contention for Golden Ball No.9, with another global crown within sight after making history in MLS at current employers Inter Miami. The South American GOAT has plundered eight goals at the 2026 World Cup becoming the competition's all-time leading scorer as he remains an inspirational talisman for his country, and has surged beyond 200 caps. He guided Argentina, in Diego Maradona-esque fashion, to the most prestigious prize in football at Qatar 2022. Bellingham, Kane Have Been Starring For England England now block Messis path in an ongoing bid to go back-to-back, with the Three Lions seeing match winners of their own emerge in the form of record-setting captain Harry Kane and Galactico midfielder Jude Bellingham. They will be giving Argentina - players, coaches and supporters - sleepless nights, but will there also be some bleary eyes in the England camp? Tuchel and Co need to come up with a tactical plan that limits Messis impact on proceedings. How Do You Stop Messi? Is That Even Possible? Quizzed on whether that is possible, or if there needs to be acceptance that the mercurial No.10 will have his say at some point, ex-Three Lions defender Pallister - speaking in association with NetBet Sport - told GOAL: "Messi's not Messi of 10 years ago, I don't think. "Yes, he's still pivotal to Argentina, he's still the go-to man, but I don't think he can do the damage that he did when he was at his peak. I don't think he can waltz through teams like he used to. "He's still a wonderful technician. The goal he scored the other night [against Cape Verde] when he took it down with the outside of his foot and slammed it in the roof of the net was exquisite. "He can score goals. He is the team leader in that side. He was four years ago and he still is now. But I don't think hes the player he was when he was taking Barcelona to European Cups and La Liga titles. "Obviously he's still dangerous. He's more of a mortal now, I would say. He can be ingenious in those little small pockets, can manipulate the ball, can score a goal. "I don't think they'll man-mark him or anything like that. But he's a player that, obviously, you have to be aware of and try and nullify. We've been looking at the weaknesses of the England team, and that probably has been at the back. But I think we have too much for Argentina on the night. "I don't think that heat is going to be an issue. I think its being played indoors at the arena in Atlanta. I think the lads will be pleased about that. They'll be more comfortable with the environment. "I think there'll be a belief in that team that they can win that game. And let's hope Spain beat France, because I think they're the team of the tournament, France. I think they'll take some stopping." 2026 World Cup: Four Heavyweights In Semifinal Action France, with Kylian Mbapp topping the Golden Boot chart at present, are set to take on Spain 24 hours prior to England locking horns with Argentina. Whatever happens across both fixtures, an epic final showdown on the outskirts of New York will be lined up. Messi is hoping to be there, but so too are Kane, Bellingham and a pack of lions that are seeking to end 60 years of trophy-chasing hurt. Somebody is likely to produce a moment of magic in Atlanta that alters the course of the game, but it is yet to be determined who that will be and whether another iconic figure will join the likes of Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo in taking a "last dance" on the grandest of sporting stages.

Leeds United Push Verbal Proposal For 40m Defender: Right Choice For Farke?
Leeds United Push Verbal Proposal For 40m Defender: Right Choice For Farke? The transfer window is heating up. Leeds United are pushing hard to wrap up their first major defensive signing of the summer, with Elland Road chiefs launching a formal verbal contract proposal to a highly rated Serie A star.Leeds United close in on major defensive target this summerAccording to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X, the West Yorkshire club have jumped into pole position for the Bosnian international centre-back Tarik Muharemovi. It is a bold move. They want the deal finalised next week. Two rival top-flight teams are still breathing down their necks, but Leeds United are confident they can cross the finishing line before anyone else has a chance to hijack the transfer.Direct club-to-club talks with Italian side Sassuolo are already on the calendar to thrash out the financial structure. Crucially, the player wants the move to England. That gives Leeds a massive advantage in these negotiations. Why do the club need this defensive reinforcement?SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA JULY 01: Folarin Balogun #20 of the United States fouls Tarik Muharemovic #4 of Bosnia and Herzegovina which is later reviewed by VAR and awarded as a red card foul a during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match between USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on July 01, 2026 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Michael Steele/Getty Images)The 23-year-old defender had a brilliant breakthrough year in Italy. He clocked up 32 league appearances during the recent 2025/26 Serie A campaign, even chipping in with two vital goals. He is a proper unit. He is 1.92 metres tall. The towering centre-half commands his penalty box with real authority and handles physical forwards without breaking a sweat. He offers a rare combination of brute strength and composure on the ball. Muharemovi can pick a pass from deep, making him the perfect fit for the current tactical system. Then there is his recent international form. He put in some excellent displays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, proving he can cope with elite attackers on the biggest stage. This looks like a brilliant piece of business. The current squad desperately lacks a tall, progressive defender who can dominate aerial duels and instantly launch quick counter-attacks.The European media are hinting at a price tag close to 40m. That is steep. A fee of around 30 million feels like the absolute limit for where he is in his development. Going over 35 million carries too much financial risk, and the recruitment team must stay disciplined. If Sassuolo demand an unrealistic fee, Leeds United should look elsewhere. The board have a clear shortlist of backup options ready. Getting this signature secured before pre-season ends gives the manager a massive asset for a tough Premier League campaign. Decisive action is needed now.

Rodri Is Confident Spain 'Can Beat' France Again To Reach World Cup Final
Spain captain Rodri believes his side has what it takes to overcome France in their blockbuster World Cup semifinal clash in Dallas. The Manchester City midfielder is drawing confidence from recent victories over Les Bleus as La Roja aim to reach their first global final since 2010. Confidence In "La Roja" Camp Rodri is far from intimidated by the prospect of facing one of the tournament favorites. Speaking ahead of the semi-final at the AT&T Stadium, the Ballon d'Or winner highlighted Spains previous successes over Didier Deschamps' side to prove they belong on the same level. "France are one of the best teams here, in great form, but so are Spain. We can beat them, weve seen that at the Euros and in the Nations League," the captain explained. Success against France is nothing new for Rodri. He was part of the side that beat them in the 2015 Under-19 Euros semi-final, as well as the Euro 2024 semi-final and last summer's Nations League. "Luis de la Fuente hasnt changed at all," Rodri said of his long-time coach. "Thats where he began to build everything we see now." While many expect a repeat of last year's 5-4 thriller, the midfielder anticipates a tighter affair, noting: "World Cup matches are a different beast; I dont think it will be anywhere near as open." Managing The Lamine Yamal Hype A huge part of Spains tactical plan involves 19-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal. However, Rodri has called for his young teammate to find a balance between his explosive talent and the emotional demands of the biggest stage. "I think he needs to calm down a bit, that anxiety that sometimes he has to prove himself," Rodri admitted. "He's a very important player for us because of what he does with and without the ball, and he's a very intelligent guy. It's true that he's 19 years old and that we have to calm him down at certain moments of the game." Despite the lack of goals from the Barcelona prodigy so far this tournament, the leadership group remains fully supportive. Rodri praised the teenager's attitude, noting that he is a "role model" who is always willing to improve. "He's a boy who listens, who always wants to learn," the City star added. How Will France Respond To The Challenge? The confidence radiating from the Spanish camp has not gone unnoticed by their opponents. Speaking from the French base, Real Madrid's new defender Ibrahima Konate insisted Les Bleus are remaining humble and blocking out any external claims that they should be afraid. France are looking to avenge their Euro 2024 exit, but they are wary of focusing purely on Yamal when Spain possesses quality across the entire pitch. "France have great attacking qualities, but Id also highlight their defensive strength," Rodri noted in response to the tactical challenge ahead. "They defend well in a low block, theyre very physical, very aggressive. Well have to take the game to where we want it." The Weight Of Captaincy With established leaders like Dani Carvajal and lvaro Morata no longer in the squad, Rodri has embraced the full responsibility of the armband. It is a role he takes seriously both on and off the field, particularly when it comes to supporting those who haven't seen much game time during this World Cup run. "The figure of captain is important: leadership is vital on the pitch but especially off it," Rodri said. "At times of doubt, it is down to him to bring calm to the group." For Rodri, only one goal remains: lifting the famous trophy in the United States. Having already conquered Europe and won the Ballon d'Or, the World Cup represents the ultimate peak. "The highest thing you can aspire to," he remarked. "Thats the challenge, and its only been done once in history."

The Friendly Wager: Expect Fireworks In ENG-ARG; Back France Plus Scheffler
Were on to Week 6 of the "Friendly Wager" and we're celebrating last weeks parlay hit on Ousmane Dembl to score against Morocco and France to advance. Add a +241 winner to the kitty. One reader took time out of his precious day to message me saying I stink at World Cup betting because I only have four wins in 13 plays. Thing is, were well in the green because three of the winners hit at +380, +715 and +241. Math hurts sometimes. This page may contain affiliate links to legal sports betting partners. Friendly Wager Record:4-9, +5.36 France vs. Spain As we trek into the semifinals, its tough to love anything. These match lines are extremely tight and well-priced, and while I do expect France to make it to Sundays final, Im not suggesting a play at -150 or higher. Thats not why were here. However, we can still have some fun. I want to take this France championship wager at a plus price (+140) and wheel it with something else. Before the tournament, my teammate Chris "Bear" Fallica said the French were the deepest, most-talented team. And nothing weve seen would cause one to shy away from that sentiment. So, what about France to win the next two matches and Scottie Scheffler to win this weeks Open Championship? Scheffler only has one victory on the PGA Tour this year, so the bloom is off the rose a bit. But I vividly remember Scheffler being around +350 to win The Masters three months ago, and now hes as high as +750 to win this weekend. Sure, Scheffler hasnt won since The American Express in late January, but he has nine top-10 finishes this year. And I really dont care that he just missed the cut at the Scottish Open. More money for us. Here are the payouts on this parlay at four books: DraftKings +1556Caesars +1799FanDuel +1820BetMGM +1920 Always be shopping. England vs. Argentina Im not sure who wins this match, but I think we get fireworks. Argentina has scored three goals in each of its last four matches and even that sleepy opening match against Austria saw it score twice. I have a difficult time envisioning the Argentina side suddenly forgetting how to put the ball in the net. Meanwhile, England has really opened up its offense thanks to the play of Jude Bellingham. We know Harry Kane is the heartbeat for Three Lions, but Bellingham has been the best all-around player. Hes +450 to win the Golden Ball, trailing only Kylian Mbapp and Lionel Messi in that market. We need three goals (in regulation) to cash this ticket. Lets go.
