Seahawks hit with scary injury news, but theres a big silver lining
Seahawks hit with scary injury news, but theres a big silver lining originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Seattle Seahawks will be without one of their emerging defensive stars for part of training camp, but the long-term outlook remains positive.According to ESPN, standout safety Nick Emmanwori is expected to miss time during training camp after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle. Despite the setback, sources indicated the expectation is that Emmanwori will be fully ready for the start of the regular season in Week 1.The Seahawks placed Emmanwori on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list Monday, initially raising questions about the nature of the injury since he had participated throughout the teams offseason program. It was later revealed that lingering soreness in his right ankle led to the decision to undergo surgery earlier this month.Emmanwori has dealt with ankle issues dating back to his rookie campaign after being selected by Seattle in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. His first injury came during the opening series of the 2025 season opener when he suffered a high ankle sprain. The injury forced him to leave the game and sidelined him for the next three contests.Seahawks lose defensive standout for camp after surprise surgeryDespite that setback, Emmanwori returned to become an important contributor in Seattles secondary. However, just days before Super Bowl LX, he suffered another injury to the same ankle during practice, this time a low ankle sprain.Rather than sit out the biggest game of his career, Emmanwori battled through the injury and helped the Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots to capture the Super Bowl championship. The young safety attempted to manage the lingering discomfort throughout the offseason, but as training camp approached and his workload increased, the soreness persisted. After consulting with the teams medical staff, Emmanwori chose to have the procedure with the goal of ensuring the ankle is fully healthy for the upcoming season. While his absence will limit valuable training camp reps, Seattle appears optimistic the surgery addressed the underlying issue. If all goes according to plan, Emmanwori should return before the regular season begins, giving the Seahawks one of their most promising defensive playmakers back in time to anchor the secondary for another championship pursuit.More NFL news:It just got a lot harder for Cowboys to trade George PickensBears urged by NFL exec to use Cole Kmet more amid top-10 TE rankingIf Bills trade Josh Allen, this would be the mind-blowing cost49ers urged to trade Mac Jones if they receive an offer of at least a 2nd round pickRams urged to trade for PatriotsDeMario Dougla

Trump will welcome the World Series champion Dodgers to the White House
WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump is welcoming Shohei Ohtani and the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers to the White House on Thursday with a Rose Garden event celebrating their second title in as many years. The Dodgers edged the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 last October to become the first repeat champions in a quarter century. Trump feted the team in the White House East Room in April 2025 to mark their 2024 World Series championshipSports teams visiting Trump at the White House have sometimes been a source of controversy dating to his first term. That includes 2018, when the president rescinded an invitation to the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles after many players suggested they might skip such a trip. This time, Dodgers star right fielder Mookie Betts isn't coming, saying he prefers to spend what is a scheduled day off for the team with his family even though he did come for the 2025 visit. The team's manager, Dave Roberts, suggested that the trip is more about winning than politics. My company line, my personal line, is, I hope that we get this invitation every year because thats the goal, to win a championship, to get this invitation to the White House, Roberts said Friday. The Dodgers originally considered coming to the White House this past April during a series with the Washington Nationals, but a crowded early season schedule didnt permit that. Instead, theyre in the nations capital during the off-day between a just-completed series at the Philadelphia Phillies and Fridays opener against the New York Mets in Queens.Championship baseball teams have been coming to the White House since 1869, when President Ulysses S. Grant hosted the Cincinnati Red Stockings. They were the first fully professional team to visit the White House and went undefeated that season, though the World Series wasnt established in its modern form until 1903.Since the Dodgers' visit last year, Trump has revamped the Rose Garden and added a patio area reminiscent of his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.Trump, a baseball fan and New York native, has for years been closely associated with the New York Yankees, whose late, longtime owner George Steinbrenner was a close friend. But the president singled out the New York Mets at a rally in Georgia on Wednesday, when he praised the ownership of the local Atlanta Braves and slammed the Mets for their sky-high payroll and losing record. Trump was joined on stage during that event by former Braves manager Brian Snitker, and Mike Plant, president and CEO of the Braves Development Company. I like baseball, Trump said before adding, You know, the Mets have the highest salary in baseball, and they lose all the time. And Im like, maybe we can steal this guy. There are teams like that, where they never go down, Trump said. Then you have other teams Were rebuilding. Theyve been rebuilding for years. I dont want to mention teams cause I know all the owners. Theyre all friends of mine.

Man City signs England international Elliot Anderson for $155M
LONDON (AP) Manchester City officially completed the signing of England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest on Thursday for a reported 116 million pounds ($155 million). The club record fee for City eclipses the 100 million pounds ($139 million) it paid for Jack Grealish in 2021 and is among the biggest ever in the Premier League. The 23-year-old Anderson has signed a five-year contract. City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the squad they have is amazing so strong in every position. As soon as I knew they wanted me, I was absolutely determined to make this move happen," Anderson said. As a footballer, you want to test yourself at the highest level. Being at City means I have that opportunity."Anderson is the first major signing by City since iconic manager Pep Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season. A new era is beginning under former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. Elliot is one of the outstanding young midfield talents in world football right now. He offers energy, outstanding work rate and an exceptional range of passing," said City director of football Hugo Viana. "His improvement in recent years has been really impressive and underlines his desire to be the best player he can be.At just 23, there is plenty of opportunity for development over the coming years and we feel he can become a complete midfielder. Manchester City is the best place for him to develop his game and keep improving, we are glad that he sees things the same way as we do."Anderson began his career at Newcastle and joined Forest in 2024 where he went on to break into the England squad. He was a key member Thomas Tuchel's England squad that won bronze at the World Cup. As soon as I arrive in Manchester after a break, I will be doing everything I can to establish myself in the City team," he said. Its a club built to win trophies and compete at the very top of the game. That is exciting for any footballer."___James Robson is at https://x.com/jamesalanrobson___AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Nationals trade idea lands familiar fan favorite Cy Young winner from Blue Jays
Nationals trade idea lands familiar fan favorite Cy Young winner from Blue Jays originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Washington Nationals are 52-51 on the regular season, a little under two weeks from the MLB trade deadline, and just 1.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. This team could very well add some help in the form of a trade or two, with the bullpen being a major priority. But the Nationals could also look to upgrade the rotation, likely aiming for some cheaper additions. The Athletic's Mitch Bannon proposed a trade idea for the Nationals and Toronto Blue Jays that would reunite Washington with beloved Cy Young winner Max Scherzer is a very fun trade deadline idea.Nationals trade idea reunites with Max Scherzer in Blue Jays deal"Bonus trade: Max Scherzer to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later," Bannon proposed. This trade idea from Bannon wouldn't cost the Nationals much at all, as it'd cost just one prospect, and likely one outside of the top 30 within the farm system.Reuniting with Scherzer in what's likely his last season in the Major Leagues would be pretty fun. Regardless of whether the Nationals push for a postseason spot or not, having their Cy Young-winning ace return to the team would be fun.He won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019, posting a 2.40 ERA in six games and five starts across 30 innings of work. In seven seasons in Washington, he posted 39.1 bWAR with a 92-47 record, a 2.80 ERA, and 1,610 strikeouts in 1,229 innings of work.MORE:MLB execs believe Padres will trade Mason Miller at trade deadlineScherzer not only spent the most time in Washington with the Nationals, but he was also pitching better there than he did anywhere else. But this season, he has -1.0 bWAR with a 10.23 ERA in six starts for the Blue Jays. He's struggled in his 19th season and is currently on the injured list.It wouldn't cost much at all for the Nationals to acquire Scherzer, but reuniting with the beloved franchise ace would be a fun storyline as they pursue a Wild Card spot in a tight National League race.More MLB news:Braves injury update on Spencer Strider has execs pessimistic about a 2026 returnDodgers' Shohei Ohtani injury update essentially ends Cy Young chancesWhite Sox have strong interest in Mets Clay Holmes with scout attending rehab assignmentYankees send scouts to Cubs vs. Twins series amid trade interest in three playersPhillies would love to trade for Mets reliever Luke Weaver

Jays Roster Moves: Schneider, Macko Up
Jun 16, 2026; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Toronto Blue Jays left fielder Davis Schneider (36) runs the bases after hitting a solo home run against the Boston Red Sox during the fifth inning at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images | Brian Fluharty-Imagn ImagesWe havent hit the daily roster moves frequency that Alex Anthopoulos gave us, but we are making moves lately.Davis Schneider and Adam Macko are back.Sean Keys was optioned to Triple-A.Patrick Corbin was put on the IL with a left teres major strain. I dont know if the strain is major or it the teres has a major and minor part. Corbin pitched Tuesday and it didnt go well, 2.1 innings, 7 hits, 4 earned, 3 strikeouts. His ERA has jumped to 5.51. It was 3.65 at the end of May. Had to figure something was going on. Strains do kind of build on you if you keep doing the activity that causes the strain. Keys hasnt been hitting .167/.189/.278 in just 37 PA, but then who has been hitting?Macko was just sent down on the weekend, after a pretty crappy outing. Schneider has had a great July in Buffalo, hitting .298/.469/.660 with 5 home runs, 14 walks and 16 strikeouts. It is great to see actually swinging the bat, not just waiting for a walk. Hopefully he can continue that in Toronto. John has switched around the lineup:Wrapping up the homestand! #BlueJays50pic.twitter.com/2Eg32FRtla Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) July 23, 2026
