    Mets Best Guardians
CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 04: Jo Adell #7 of the Cleveland Guardians runs onto the field prior to a game against the New York Mets at Progressive Field on August 04, 2026 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Nick Cammett/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesJoey Cantillo and the Cleveland Guardians took the field against the New York Mets, the day after a successful trade deadline. The pieces have been moved and the Guardians got a first look at the rest of the season.Unfortunately for Joey, the Mets were on their better game. Joey looked like he was struggling with control, pitching a bit wild, and a throwing error in the second wasnt helpful. With two outs, Gabriel Arias made a throwing error to first that allowed Marcus Semien to reach. The next batter walked and the batter after him hit a three-run home run on a 90.9 mph four seamer down the middle. Cantillo ended the night having gone 5.0 innings. He allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks and struck out five.Slade Cecconi came on in the sixth in his new role in the bullpen. Slade went 2.2 innings, allowing a solo home run, two hits, and striking out four batters. Tim Herrin finished the eighth and closed the game, only walking one batter.Recent acquisition Jo Adell went 2-for-4 with a run and a walk. He also reached on a error. In the bottom of the third Adell doubled to lead off the inning. Chase DeLauter drew a walk and, with one out, Angel Martnez slapped a double to left that bounced off of the foul line on the walk to score Adell from second.Your browser does not support the video tag. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Chase DeLauter singled on a sharp liner to left. Angel Martnez, with now two outs, drew a walk. Travis Bazzana hit a RBI single up the center, through both defenders to score CDL for the Guards final run of the night.Your browser does not support the video tag.On a night where there are a lot of frustrating little mistakes and issues that piled up to a loss, there were some positives. Jo Adell looks to be a good addition that the team needed. Chase DeLauter is an on base machine, going 1-for-2 with three walks. Steven Kwan is one of the best defensive outfielders in the game.Your browser does not support the video tag.Your browser does not support the video tag. These two teams will face off again tomorrow at 6:40PM EDT. Chelsea vs. Juventus, Friendly: Preview, team news, how to watch
HONG KONG, CHINA - AUGUST 4: Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Levi Colwill of Chelsea thank the fans after a training session at Kai Tak Sports Park on August 4, 2026 in Hong Kong, China. (Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images) | Chelsea FC via Getty ImagesChelsea are in Hong Kong for the second leg of our preseason tour, and will be taking on Juventus in a showcase friendly tomorrow. This will be our third official preseason match, following a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, both in Sydney, Australia last week. (We also had a couple games behind closed doors at Cobham against lower-league teams, but those dont count even less.)Results of course dont matter in preseason, even against Spurs fake games, as Jos Mourinho once famously put it (which reminds, the Netflix documentary with him comes out August 11!) though obviously its nicer to win than to lose. Still, the most important part is working on our fitness, our tactics, and our chemistry. And that remains a work in progress, with Xabi Alonso specifically lamenting our inability to control parts of the match against Spurs (when it was still 11-v-11). So presumably thats high on our list of things to work on next.Date / Time: Wednesday, August 5, 2026, 19:30 (local time); 12:30 BST; 7;30am EDTVenue: Kai Tak Stadium, Hong Kong Kai Tak was once the site of a famous airport where airplanes had to dodge buildings on approach and often land sideways. Now the heart attacks are served up via a huge sports complex, including this new stadium, which opened last year. (Well, technically the stadium is where the car park used to be. The runway is now a modern promenade of high-rise apartments, hotels, shopping, and a cruise ship terminal.)Forecast: From the Australian winter to a subtropical summer, its going to be very very hot and humidOn TV:none;elsewhereStreaming:Paramount+ (USA), FanCode (India); StarTimes (NGA); CFC+ (UK/intl) CFC+is Chelseas new-ish premium(?) streaming service so if your region does not have a rights-holder, you can watch there for 9.99 (or buy all six preseason games for just a little more at 14.99; or subscribe for the whole year for a little bit more at 19.99)Chelsea team news: Numbers on tour have grown with the arrivals of Pedro Neto, Geovany Quenda, Mike Penders, Gaga Slonina, and new signing Danny Welbeck. And the big surprise is Mykhailo Mudryks sudden reinstatement to football; hes immediately flown out to join the squad as well, at least for now, before we figure out how to best handle his immediate future (most likely a loan, one would imagine). Mudryks expected to feature in some capacity, though with over 30 players in camp now, minutes will have to be spread around quite a bit to make everyones time somewhat worthwhile. The one concern from the Spurs game was the absence of Robert Snchez, who appeared to pick up some sort of injury during the warm-up and would end up not playing at all. Thankfully, Xabi Alonso says that our number-one goalkeeper is much better now.Juventus team news: Since winning the league in 2019-20, Juve have not finished higher than third and were down to a lowly sixth last season, despite Luciano Spallettis best efforts at recovering from the poor start under Igor Tudor (Tudor would later end up at Spurs to do even worse, which was amusing). But for Juve, theyre starting to approach an historic title drought in Serie A, and its not looking likely that they would immediately jump back to the top of the pile. They have made a couple interesting moves this summer, including the signing of Chelsea-linked Kerim Alajbegovi, who had impressed at the World Cup, and the permanent acquisition of former Chelsea prospect Jrmie Boga, who had spent the second half of last season there already on loan from Nice. Boga will turn 30 this season, if you want to feel old.View from the enemy:Black & White & Read All OverPreviously: The last time we played Juventus was one of our best games of the last 5-6 years, the 4-0 win giving us hope that Thomas Tuchels Blues, fresh off our Champions League triumph, would be the ones to break our own title drought. Alas, Reece James and Ben Chilwell would get injured soon after, and though wed still win the Club World Cup to complete the set (old format), the team would become a pawn of geopolitics by the end of the season, and yeah. Here we are.

Million-dollar 1 Point Slam set to return to the Australian Open in 2027
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) The million-dollar 1 Point Slam is returning to the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of 2027.Australian Open organizers announced Wednesday that the crowd favorite from last January would again be offering a top prize of a million Australian dollars ($705,000 at current exchange rates) when it is held next year before the Jan. 17-31 main draw at Melbourne Park.Jordan Smith, a little-known local amateur player beat Jannik Sinner and went on to make himself a millionaire in Australian dollars after winning the 1 Point Slam. The Australian won on the third stroke of the final when Joanna Garland, the womens No. 117 from Taiwan, sent a two-handed backhand wide. All the matches lasted just one single point in a knockout bracket that included men and women, professionals and amateurs, plus celebrities such as Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou, who was knocked out without hitting a ball after an ace from Petar Jovic. The event also included Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Alexander Zverev and Naomi Osaka. My journey started at a qualifying event at Sydney Olympic Park I never expected it would lead to me stepping onto Rod Laver Arena and competing against world-class players, let alone walking away as the winner. It completely changed my life, Smith said in an Australian Open statement Wednesday. This year well be hosting an event at our own club and hopefully inspiring more players to give it a go, just like I did. You never know where it might take you, Smith added. From next week, affiliated clubs, associations, coaches and partner schools across Australia can register their interest to host a 1 Point Slam qualifying event in the leadup to the Melbourne Park final.___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

What we learned about Atltico from Manchester United friendly loss
SOLNA, SWEDEN - AUGUST 1: Arnau Ortiz of Atletico de Madrid celebrates after scoring 0-1 during the pre-season friendly match between Manchester United and Atletico de Madrid at Strawberry Arena on August 1, 2026 in Solna, Sweden. (Photo by Michael Campanella/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesAtltico Madrid lost 2-1 to Manchester United at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm on Saturday in a pre-season friendly, part of the Snapdragon Cup. Youngster Arnau Ortiz put Atleti ahead in the fifth minute, collecting the ball from a corner and swinging a cross toward the far post that curled past everyone and dropped into the net, by his own admission not the pass he intended.Manchester United leveled shortly after halftime through a Bryan Mbeumo penalty, conceded after a clumsy challenge from Jorge Castillo, then went ahead in the 74th minute when Mbeumo scored again from open play following a run from Jack Fletcher.Atltico made wholesale changes at the interval, sending on Salvi Esquivel for Jan Oblak, Josema Gimnez for Robin Le Normand, and introducing Rodrigo Mendoza and Morten Hjulmand in midfield, with further substitutions following past the hour mark. Hjulmand had the best chance of the second half for Atleti, striking the post as they pushed for an equaliser, although it never materialised. Here are five takeaways we can glean from the friendly, and what the loss could tell us about Atletis 2026/27 team.A back three or a back four? The choice of formation was an intriguing one. The 3-4-1-2 used against Getafe was repeated, but there was also a little more flexibility. Jorge Domnguez provided added coverage on the right, allowing Carlos Martn more offensive license in the wing-back role than Matteo Ruggeri had on the left.It marked a slight change from the win over Getafe, but still left many question marks as to how Diego Simeone will set up his team when the season kicks off. The return of his full squad, expected on August 10th, will likely give a clearer indication of whether Atleti will revert to a back three, used regularly as recently as 2025, or stick with a back four. What was evident in Sweden was that Ruggeri and Martn were not natural fits for the system. With squad depth limited and exits for both likely, that may not be the biggest cause for concern.Domnguez as the stand-out youngsterArguably the least well-known player in the Atleti squad this pre-season, the 16-year-old Domnguez was one of those to stand out and not just because of his 6 feet, 5 inches of height.Despite that strength in terms of height and physicality, Domnguez had little work to do in the air with only a single aerial duel. He did rack up an impressive 12 ground duels, winning half of them, and five tackles with three recoveries. He looked as reliable, if not more, as the far-more experienced duo of Le Normand and Dvid Hancko alongside him in the back three.Atleti remain on the hunt for a central defender, with speculation again linking the club to Tottenham captain Cuti Romero. But Domnguez is staking his claim to have an increasing first team role this season, despite his youth. Will Arnau Ortiz be competing for a first-team role?At the age of 24, Arnau Ortiz is in a fascinating position as he battles for an improbable place in Simeones team. Amid interest from across the top two divisions of Spanish football, there is speculation that El Cholo has been impressed with what hes seen from Arnau, and he could keep him for squad depth this season.Ortiz scored 23 goals in 38 games for Fernando Torres Atltico Madrileo last season, demonstrating a strong eye for goal that he has maintained across two preseason friendlies. Here, he put Atleti ahead inside five minutes. Arnau collected the ball from a corner and swung a cross toward the far post that curled past everyone and dropped in.Operating in a role switching with Ademola Lookman between a central and wide left offensive position, Arnau was lively and had the confidence to take Manchester United on. His three shots was a joint-high among all of the players involved, while only one other player managed more than a single shot for Atleti. This was a weakened line-up, but it will be intriguing to see how involved Arnau remains as the first-team regulars return in Korea and Marseille in the coming weeks.Rodrigo Mendoza still needs to step upThrough the early stages of pre-season, weve seen Cholo Simeone experiment with Rodrigo Mendoza in a more advanced role as a number 10, and it was perhaps made clear why, as he struggled under pressure and conceded possession in his own final third to allow Manchester United to score their second goal.Mendoza recorded a poor 81 percent pass completion in the holding midfield role, some change from the 96 percent recorded by Koke in the same role in the first half. It reflected a real concern about his potential to develop into a long-term replacement for the captain, or as a viable player at this level.Mexico international Obed Vargas has looked more comfortable, and with the arrival of Hjulmand and the return from injury of Pablo Barrios, its understandable that Mendozas minutes may be limited. A loan move may be needed to help him progress. The pain of watching Josema Gimnez in 2026Not so long ago, Gimnez was one of the most dominant defenders in Europe. Sure, hed have injuries every now and then, but when he was available, he was rock solid. Nowadays, hes not even that. Hes played 90 minutes only six times in 2026, and even then hes looked a shadow of his former self. Here, his reading of play was all over the shop, looking more exposed than many of the youngsters in and around him in the side. In particular, his positioning for Uniteds second goal was woeful, and looked more like an issue of a proven veteran whose body couldnt keep up than one of inexperience. Its clear that Gimnez is not an option that Simeone can count on this season, and he is some way down the pecking order if even Domnguez is being picked ahead of him. The question may be whether Mateu Alemany can find a different home for him, even after these decades at the club, or whether Atltico will have to suck up and pay his substantial pay packet to sit on the bench.

Patriots release rookie TE, add another WR to crowded room
The New England Patriots announced that they claimed third-year wide receiver Tejhaun Palmer off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday.Palmer was selected by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft. He spent the last two seasons on Arizonas practice squad and made his NFL debut in January. He was released by the Cardinals organization on Monday. The Patriots waived tight end Jeremiah Franklin to make room for Palmer.Palmer played for Snow College before transferring to UAB. He earned a reputation as a playmaker there, recording 18.3 yards per catch in his senior year. The Patriots are loaded at wide receiver. Things are so deep at receiver that the team might have to contemplate keeping seven players at the position on the final roster. Palmer will have his work cut out in separating himself from the pack enough to get a roster opportunity. Former top pick Casey Mize reflects on Tigers' decision to trade him, best friend Tarik Skubal
PHOENIX While Tarik Skubal was making his Los Angeles Dodgers debut at Wrigley Field, Casey Mize, his former teammate and close friend, was sitting in the visiting clubhouse at Chase Field cheering him on.Skubal and Mize were drafted together by the Detroit Tigers in 2018, came through the minor leagues together, arrived in the major leagues together in 2020, and within 48 hours became ex-Tigers together.Mize, who like Skubal said the Tigers never made a contract extension offer to keep him, was traded to the San Diego Padres on Monday afternoon, just minutes before the 3 p.m. PT trade deadline in Seattle. He packed up his suitcase, took a flight to Phoenix that was diverted to Las Vegas because of the Phoenix dust storms, and Tuesday afternoon was wearing a Padres brown uniform.Very excited to be here, he said, chasing a championship. Got a really good group here. I'm excited to be a part of it.When the Tigers blew a 7-0 lead last Wednesday to the Baltimore Orioles with Skubal on the mound, Skubal knew he would be traded, he revealed at his introductory press conference with the Dodgers. Mize knew that Skubal would be traded, too.He just didnt know his own status.I thought he might be gone, but for myself, Mize said, I still didn't know the direction in which the organization was going to go.Even when Skubal was traded Saturday night to the Dodgers, Mize was unsure of his status. Were the Tigers going to keep him and still try to make the postseason? Or were they going to make a clean break and dump him, too?We were kind of up in the air after the Skubal trade, Mize said. I thought it would be more likely, and then the clock just kept ticking, and I was like, 'I don't know.' And then at the very last second, it happened. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, but you know, excited with how it turned out.Yet, just like Skubal, Mize also shed some tears with his teammates and coaching staff before he left town. He was a first-round pick by the Tigers (taken first overall). He loved the organization. Loved the city. And loved the fans. Now, hes starting all over, and just like Skubal, will be a free agent after the season.Only hell be earning a little less money in free agency than Skubal, whos expected to receive in excess of $400 million. It was a pretty emotional day all the way around, said Mize, whos scheduled to start Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. You know, been living (in) Detroit for eight years. Met so many special people there. People that have changed my life and my career. So, it wasn't like I was trying to get out of there or anything. That place means a lot to me. It was really special, and certainly sad to leave. "You know, your mind goes to so many different places. It's just, you have to say goodbye to so many people that you really care about. ... But I couldn't be more excited and happy for this opportunity. I landed in a great situation. Mixed emotions, but I'm happy with how everything turned out.The Padres are ecstatic the way it worked out, landing not only Mize, but also San Francisco Giants No. 2 starter Robbie Ray, whos scheduled to start Friday when the Padres return home. They are battling for a wild-card berth, entering Tuesday night two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies and Diamondbacks in the wild-card race. Were trying to win, A.J. Preller, Padres president of baseball operations, said. We dont apologize for it. Were trying to win championships. Were trying to get to the postseason and do it year after year. Now, with the acquisition of Mize and Ray, the Padres have doubled their starting rotation. They had been using just Michael King and Walker Buehler as traditional starters while going with an 11-man bullpen. Now, they can go the conventional approach. It really comes back to maximizing our roster and making sure we have the pitching depth to get through August and September, Preller said. You have to beat the best teams to get to where you want to go, so having guys like Robbie and Casey gives us starting options that we feel can stack up against anyone in October. The Padres hope that the upheaval doesnt adversely affect Mize's and Rays routine. Rays last start was July 30 with the San Francisco Giants, when he gave up just four hits and one run in six innings against the Padres. Mize, scratched by the Tigers before his last scheduled start to prevent a potential injury before the trade deadline, hasnt pitched in 11 days. His last start was July 25 against the Kansas City Royals. He has had bullpen sessions, but its hardly the same as pitching in games.Im ready, he said. Its been a little bit. So, Im ready to get out there. And, yes, hes looking forward to catching up with Skubal again. They spent their entire career together in Detroit, and now theyre separated by a 90-minute drive, competing in the same NL West Division as fierce rivals. The two teams face off one last time in the regular season, Sept. 22-24 at Dodger Stadium. It'll be pretty cool, Mize said. It's interesting. We come from the AL Central, and now the NL West is kind of out of left field for us. But, you know, we'll cross paths, and I look forward to it.He's my best friend, so obviously, hoping the best for him, but just not when he plays the Padres.Follow Nightengale on X: @BnightengaleThis article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Former top pick Casey Mize reflects on Tigers' decision to trade him, best friend Tarik Skubal

NFL declines comment on the Steelers' failure to disclose Aaron Rodgers' illness before playoff loss
Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers recently disclosed to Mike Silver of The Athletic that Rodgers was ill before the January playoff loss to the Texans. The illness was not disclosed by the Steelers. In response to an inquiry from PFT on the situation, the NFL declined comment. In 2023, the NFL fined the Falcons $75,000 and then-coach Arthur Smith $25,000 for failing to disclose that running back Bijan Robinson had an illness on the morning of a game against the Buccaneers. The fact that the NFL has declined comment doesn't mean the league will ignore it. How can they? In this age of legalized and normalized betting, the failure of the Steelers to update their injury report to reveal that Rodgers had an illness is a problem on its face. The league has no choice but to investigate. If the reporting is true (and it is, we've confirmed), the league will have no choice but to act. Any other approach amounts to the league looking the other way on the Steelers concealing an important piece of inside information.Given the various ways in which inside information has allegedly or actually been misused in multiple sports (the NFL recently suspended a Cardinals executive for allegedly sharing information about the team's draft picks), inaction is not acceptable. If the league is going to profit from gambling, either directly through sponsorships or indirectly by owners owning up to five percent of companies that operate sportsbooks, the NFL cannot ignore clear instances of teams having inside information about a player's health and failing to reveal it.

Dodgers GM Reveals How Team Will Use Kris Bubic
Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes addressed how the Dodgers will handle Kris Bubic, whom they added at the trade deadline. The Dodgers, following the Tarik Skubal deal, felt like they were done addressing the pitcher position, but instead, they went after another pitcher for additional depth. They added Bubic, a lefty who has been on the injured list for the majority of the season, while sending out Carlos Duran, a minor leaguer whom the Dodgers signed on a minor league deal. Bubic has been battling soreness in his throwing elbow, and then he picked up shoulder soreness during his rehab assignment.May 3, 2026; Seattle, Washington, USA; Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Kris Bubic (50) walks to the dugout following the sixth inning against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Mandatory Credit: Joe Nicholson-Imagn ImagesBubic threw his first bullpen as a Dodger on Monday, and the hope from the organization is that he returns at some point this season, ideally as a relief pitcher, but a starting role could be an option if there are enough injuries. Biggest thing with Kris is we know what hes capable of, Gomes said. Hes been an All-Star and able to be a dominant force both out of the pen and as a starter. Our plan right now is to run him out as a reliever and just get him healthy and try to get him back to that version he was prior to this year. The rotation is already absolutely crowded to the point where one of their high-priced starters will be used as a reliever in the postseason, but with the Dodgers mentality of wanting the 14 best pitchers in the postseason, no matter what role they had in the regular season, Bubic has a chance to cut through. Jan 22, 2025; Los Angeles, CA, USA; L-R; Los Angeles Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes talks with manager Dave Roberts (30) during a press conference at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesWhat does Bubic bring to the Dodgers?Bubic has the pedigree of being an All-Star, earning the nod last season after putting up a 2.55 ERA. He is still only 28 years old, making him still very young for a veteran pitcher like him. Notably, Dodgers Nations Doug McKain sees real upside in the trade. This is a really good pickup for the Dodgers. He was an All-Star a couple of years ago, this is a guy that has a ton of upside, McKain said.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)This season, he has thrown 50.1 innings with a 4.11 ERA and has 0.8 fWAR. His fastball sits around 92 MPH, but he has maintained a strong strikeout percentage and does a good job of keeping the ball on the ground, which will be beneficial with the Dodgers defense behind him.
