Carolina Panthers second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton was carted off the practice field with a right knee injury during the first day of training camp on Thursday. Panthers head coach Dave Canales said after practice that he didn't know the extent of the injury, but tests were scheduled. An MRI on Thursday afternoon revealed that Scourton suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and he will miss the entire 2026 season, ESPN and others reported. Scourton, a second-round draft pick in 2024 out of Texas A&M, went down on a wet field late in practice during team drills. Players immediately gathered around him on one knee. Scourton held his hand over his face as he was led into an awaiting cart. As he was leaving the field, the cart stopped and Canales and every player on the roster individually walked over to hug Scourton before he was taken to the training room. "They care about each other," Canales said. "Whenever youre in a group of people doing something hard together, it has a way of creating a special bond. Between all the workouts and going through a full season and an offseason and all that, it means something to the guys. Im proud of that." Scourton had an outstanding rookie season for the Panthers, playing in 17 games with eight starts. He finished the season with 47 tackles, five sacks and nine quarterback hits while developing into a key starter for the NFL's 15th-ranked defense. Scourton appeared to be engaged in a block with an offensive lineman at the time of the injury. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was near the play at the time, but said he did not see what happened. He praised Scourton for how quickly he has developed into a leader on defense. "It's been really cool to see him come into his own," Young said. "He has a super-high motor, has great energy. He's fun to be around. He turns into that different competitor when he's on the field. We feel that during practice. He has raised the level of (intensity at) practice many times. We don't know anything yet (on the injury), but we're just praying for him." Canales had prepared for the worst. Now that Scourton is officially out for the season, he remains confident the Panthers have enough depth behind him to remain competitive. "We've got depth," Canales said. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the top overall pick in this year's draft, signed a four-year, $57.27 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. The Raiders hold a fifth-year option. Mendoza was the last of the Raiders' 10 draft picks to sign. "Im excited to get this thing signed," Mendoza said on the team's social media post. "Im excited to be a part of the silver and black. Cant wait." He ran the third-team offense in organized team activities and minicamp, but is expected to take on a larger role in training camp, which begins Wednesday. Veteran Kirk Cousins, who signed a free-agent contract worth $20 million guaranteed, enters camp as the No. 1 quarterback. How long Cousins hangs on to that spot will be the main storyline in camp and perhaps into the season. Mendoza hopes to translate the success he experienced in his final season of college football in which he won the Heisman Trophy and led the Indiana Hoosiers to their first national championship. Also, star pass rusher Maxx Crosby said on his podcast "The Rush" that he would join the rookies for their training camp. Crosby has been working his way back from knee surgery. The Panthers agreed to terms with outside linebacker Cam Gill earlier Thursday. They filled an open roster spot later in the day by signing free agent tight end Caden Prieskorn.Prieskorn, 26, spent time with the Lions and Broncos during training camp in 2025. He was briefly on the practice squad of the Bucs and then the Browns.Cleveland signed Prieskorn to a futures contract but cut him May 19.He played college ball at Ole Miss and Memphis and was offensive MVP of the 2023 Peach Bowl after catching 10 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

He initially joined Calhoun's staff in 1994 and spent 13 seasons as an assistant and key recruiter, helping the Huskies to national titles in 1999 and 2004. In 2007, he headed down to Quinnipiac to take over the head coaching reins and lasted 10 seasons.Moore was fired from Quinnipiac in 2017 and joined Hurley's staff at Rhode Island. The following season, he followed Hurley to UConn and was an assistant on the 2023 and 2024 repeat national title teams.Prior to last season, Moore took over the program's newly-created general manager position, in which he handled name, image and likeness (NIL) and transfer portal issues, among many other duties.Moore, 61, was simply tired of the day-to-day grind that the new world of college athletics has unleashed. For example, barely an hour after the Huskies had lost to Michigan in the national championshipgame, the transfer portal opened. Throughout the entire flight back to Connecticut, Hurley asked Moore about the amount of money the program might have for this player, for that player. The next day, less than 24 hours after the championship game, the entire staff was back at the Werth Family Champions Center.And they'd reconvene for each of the next 35 days, all just to get the top of the 2026-27 roster in order. Current players had to go through re-negotiations, contingency plans had to be hatched, huge roster decisions over a five or six-week period ... all of it a few weeks behind most other programs thanks to the Huskies' long NCAA tourney run.That's not a reflection on Hurley or the pressures of working on his staff. It's simply the realities of the college basketball world, practically a 24/7 job these days. In fact, Moore was hesitant to take the job in the first place, but acquiesced to Hurley's wishes.So, who will UConn look for to replace Moore? It's not likely to be Andrew Hurley, Dan's son, who has expressed an interested in becoming a GM some day. He should remain with the program in a similar capacity, however.More likely, it'll be a young person with NBA experience, someone willing to get out, travel, and hopefully boost the Huskies' foreign presence, which isn't overly strong right now.Of course, it remains to be seen what type of role Hurley will want for his new GM. Will it be dealing with donors and boosters, raising money? Will it be dealing with David Benedict and the administration? Dealing with the Big East (scheduling, referees, etc.)? Analytics? Roster construction?These are all the types of things Tom Moore has had to deal with for the past couple of seasons. Now, he's off to retirement, a good amount of money saved up between him and his wife, Eileen. Three weeks ago, the Red Sox were an afterthought. They were a last-place club, facing the possibility of selling their top assets. Then Boston ripped off 15 wins in a row, tying a franchise record that dates back to Ted Williams, and suddenly the AL East looks different. Forget the Blue Jays. They've been lapped, dropped from the conversation entirely. The team the Yankees actually have to worry about just climbed out of the basement in dramatic fashion and is playing the best baseball in their division. The Rays sit atop the AL East at 59-42. The Yankees, at 57-45, are hanging on to a wild-card spot rather than controlling their own destiny, and the gap behind them is closing fast. The Red Sox, at 52-49, are now seven games behind the Rays and in possession of the final AL wild card spot. That's the environment Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is operating in with the trade deadline looming. Then, theres the elephant in the room. The uncomfortable question hanging over every move Cashman makes between now and August 3 is whether this Yankees offense is actually good enough to hang onto a playoff spot without Aaron Judge for an indefinite amount of time. Are the Yankees operating without their best player for another month, or will Cashman be forced to spend prospect capital to patch a hole that won't close until September or October? Judge has been out since June 2 with a stress fracture in his right rib, and things have been ugly without him. The Yankees are 19-21 without Judge this season, compared to 36-23 with him. Since June 18, they've scored the second-fewest runs and struck out the most among any team in the majors. Their .203 batting average with runners in scoring position is ranked 27th in MLB since Judge went on the IL. Cashman isn't dressing that up. Asked recently about the teams performance without Judge, he acknowledged the lack of offense and how the onus falls on the rest of the lineup to pick up the slack. "Clearly, you miss him," Cashman told reporters in Tampa earlier this month. "That's certainly part of it. But thats not an answer to why were struggling with some consistently really good players that are going into collective slumps at the same time. That has nothing to do with Aaron Judge." The Yankees can also stop pretending Judges return date is close. He underwent another round of re-imaging on his fractured rib during the All-Star break, and though it showed some healing, it wasnt enough for Judge to begin baseball activities. The slugger has to wait an indeterminate amount of time before a team of specialists gives him and the Yankees the green light to swing a bat again. Judge, for his part, has remained steadfast that he will return at some point this season. "It's feeling better," he said recently at Yankee Stadium. "There were a couple of weeks that were tough, where I really couldn't do a lot. Now we're feeling ten times better." So, where do the Yankees go from here? At least, if Judge was healthy, his bat would help cover up some of the glaring weaknesses in the lineup. Without him, the Yankees have no choice but to address their issues. Theres an obvious hole at catcher. Theres a need for a right-handed power bat with Giancarlo Stanton out since April 24 with a nagging calf strain. And there are reinforcements needed in the bullpen. Its hard to imagine the Yankees moving on from this trade deadline without addressing their catching problem. Yankees catchers have combined for a .180 batting average, .270 slugging percentage, and a wRC+ of 50, all of which are ranked 29th in the majors this season. Austin Wells has cratered hes batting .163 with an OPS+ of 48 and the tandem behind him hasn't been better. Cashman, at least, has stopped soft-pedaling it. "It's an issue, clearly," he said of the teams backstop situation. Their realistic targets are Minnesotas Ryan Jeffers and Colorados Hunter Goodman. Jeffers is a right-handed bat hitting close to .290 with a .950 OPS. Hell be a free agent after this season. The biggest concern with Jeffers is how much his hamate fracture, which sidelined him for nearly two months this season, will continue to impact his power. Goodman, meanwhile, leads the National League in slugging (.563), has hit 31 home runs, and has been more consistent than Jeffers while also being a right-handed bat under team control through 2029. The bullpen is where things get expensive. New York had hoped to solve part of it for free, by sliding hard-throwing top prospect Carlos Lagrange into a high-leverage relief role. But Lagranges shoulder injury in his throwing arm shelved that plan. Since then, the reported appetite has grown far bigger than a depth arm. The Yankees have been connected to Padres closer Mason Miller, and multiple reports indicate the Yankees are willing to discuss virtually every prospect in the system except their untouchable No. 1 prospect, infielder George Lombard Jr., to get him. Their interest in Miller indicates that small moves won't be enough if Judge doesn't return to full strength. And it's a real gamble, given Miller would likely cost MLB-ready outfield chips like Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez, precisely the kind of long-term value Cashman has spent years trying to protect. Or, perhaps a reunion with Mets reliever Luke Weaver is on the table. The Yankees have the prospect capital to be genuinely aggressive. Whether they should be, with Judges timeline still murky and a tight division race thats heightening the pressure, is the harder question. Cashman has less than two weeks to answer it, and with the Red Sox surging, the Yankees' margin for error is getting thinner.
