Is Tadej Pogacar ill? Why sickness could threaten bid for fifth Tour de France title
Tadej Pogacars bid for a fifth Tour de France title could come under threat with a sickness bug seemingly sweeping through his UAE Team Emirates XRG teammates.Pogacar holds a commanding lead of nearly five minutes over his rivals and appeared all but certain to wrap up another yellow jersey after dominating the race virtually from the outset. But Thursdays Stage 18 to Orcieres-Merlette perhaps provoked reason for concern for the great Slovenian with UAE neither as forceful or prominent as usual in the mountains.Brandon McNulty, who started the day feeling a sore throat, was forced to abandon the race midway through the stage, while another key lieutenant in Adam Yates battled through again having struggled himself with illness this week.UAE Team Emirates XRG have been hit by illness (Reuters)While Isaac del Toro was able to stay with his team leader, the Mexican has also slipped back from Remco Evenepoel in the chase for second place behind Pogacar and the race leader himself fuelled speculation over his condition by swapping his usual yellow shorts for a black pair. There are two potentially defining mountain tests to come as the peloton takes on Alpe dHuez on back-to-back stages, before the final stage around Paris on Sunday.Im sad that Brandon could not finish, Pogacar admitted to The Guardian after protecting his lead to the finish in Orcieres-Merlette. We will see in the next two days but Adam is getting better, and tomorrow, we will go with the flow. I think we can manage. Its the third week, all the teams are suffering. There are bodies everywhere on a stage like today. We will keep fighting and I believe we can do it.Key UAE domestiques Tim Wellens and Florian Vermeersch have also been apparently dealing with illness as the Tour nears its conclusion. It leaves greater importance placed upon the hardy Nils Pollitt and Felix Grossschartner to guide Pogacar and Del Toro through the next three days as UAE look to secure a race one-two after the abandonment of Jonas Vingegaard following a heavy crash.Thank goodness Isaac and Tadej are feeling good, and so are Felix and I, Politt said.We are trying to separate ourselves from the team as much as possible in order to simply minimise the risk. Many riders are ill in the bunch you hear from every team that theres something going around. That is simply part of three weeks. Ive never got to the end of a Tour without sick hands.Stage 19 is a 127.9km route from Gap to the summit of Alpe dHuez, with the final climb set to test the riders across 13.8km at an average gradient of eight per cent. The peloton will also finish on the iconic ascent on Saturday on a huge day in the mountains that also features the Col du Galibier, the highest peak in this years race.

Uli Hoene says Max Eberl was Bayern Munichs brain behind Michael Olise move
Michael Olise (Bayern Munich) looks on during Matchday 24 1.Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Germany on February 28 2026. (Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty ImagesClub legend and supervisory board member Uli Hoene has given board member for sport Max Eberl a lot of credit for one of Bayern Munichs most important recent signings Michael Olise.According to Hoene, Eberl essentially took the initiative to bring Olise to Bayern Munich, despite the club not having an extensive history with the player or even knowing him particularly well beforehand.Max Eberl gets the credit for the signing of Michael Olise, that has to be said. He essentially made this decision on his own initiative, because we didnt know the player beforehand. We said we couldnt really comment on it. But if youre so convinced and Christoph Freund was also involved, as was the coach, although Vincent wasnt there at the time, to my knowledge then we have to accept it. Thats precisely what management is for: so they can and are allowed to make decisions, Hoene said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).That is a fascinating insight into how the transfer came together.Eberl saw something in Olise and was convinced enough to push for the signing, even without everyone at the club having the same level of familiarity with the player. Christoph Freund was also involved, while Vincent Kompany was part of the process as well, although Hoene believes the current Bayern Munich coach was not yet in place when the initial decision was made.Sometimes, transfers are built around months of scouting and complete consensus. Other times, someone in a position of responsibility sees the opportunity, believes in the player and makes the call. That is exactly what Hoene believes management should be allowed to do.And in Olises case, Eberls conviction has certainly been justified. The Frenchman has quickly established himself as one of Bayern Munichs most important players, proving that Eberls decision to trust his instincts was a very good one.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user accountand get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreatecommunity postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

Thug Rose Wont Return Without Purpose
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JANUARY 24: (L-R) Rose Namajunas wrestles Natalia Silva of Brazil in a flyweight bout during the UFC 324 event at T-Mobile Arena on January 24, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Its been a difficult few years for Rose Namajunas.Thug Rose left the Strawweight division after an all-time bad split-decision loss to Carla Esparza(there are no highlights), joining the Flyweight ranks in 2023. Immediately, Namajunas jumped into the deep end of 125-pound competition, losing a competitive bout to Manon Fiorot. After six bouts in her new weight class, Namajunas is batting an even .500 with losses in three separate title eliminator matchups.Back in January, Namajunas started very strong versus Natalia Silva before ultimately losing the decision. During the fight, Namajunas suffered an eye poke that ultimately sent her under the knife then additional injuries sidelined the former champion further. It was like a three-month process, Namajunas explained on theWeighing Inpodcast (via MMA Junkie). Right after the fight, I had to get this surgery right away. They put this weird silicone tube in my eye, and I have no idea how they did that. It was a really easy surgery, though. It was just kind of uncomfortable. I couldnt blow my nose. I couldntrub my eye or something because (the tube) could pop out, so I had to be off no contact training for three months. Then I had my thumb I tore my UCL in my thumb. The 34-year-old veteran is back in training but has not yet received a fight offer. While Namajunas is not retired and wants to compete again, she also admits that the combination of injuries and losses have left her future uncertain. When Namajunas does come back, she wants to ensure its a meaningful and relevant matchup.Thats why Ive been sitting out for a while because Im trying to rediscover, OK, what am I doing now? Namajunas said. To just be fairly transparent, the last three opportunities that I had, or the last three losses that I had the Natalia fight, the Erin Blanchfield fight, and the Manon (Fiorot) fight I was told that I would get a title shot with a win with that fight I came up short in all three of those. Im at a point in my life where Im thinking about family stuff and all these things, and next steps, future things. So I do want to compete, and I still want to fight again, but I want to make sure that when Im going in there, Im going for a purpose and a reason. There is no longer a particularly clear path to 125-pound gold for Namajunas, who would now need multiple wins to secure a title shot given those losses. However, Namajunas does still have the option of returning to Strawweight. Mackenzie Dern is a flawed champion, and Namajunas has already defeated top contender and former champ Zhang Weili on two separate occasions. If Thug Rose wants to go on one final run, Strawweight is probably her best bet, though making weight only grows more difficult with age.
