SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Michigan basketball will no longer play Duke in 2026-27 seasonOne of the most intriguing expected Michigan basketball games of the upcoming season is off the table.Michigan and Duke will not play one another in 2026-27, according to multiple reports. The two programs were originally set to meet at Madison Square Garden in New York as part of Dukes three-game package with Amazon Michigan announced the matchup in April with a social media post saying lets run it back but issues with Big Ten media rights forced the teams to look for a new home for the game that was not in Big Ten territory.Duke will now play Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden.Once MSG was off the table, rumors of a game at LoanDepot Park in Miami (home of MLB's Marlins) began to circulate, something former Michigan coach Dusty May reportedly was in alignment with. The move was never finalized, with one person in the program saying in June its not finished at all getting close but still have some time.Later that month, May left for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks and Michigan eventually appointed Mike Boynton Jr. to replace him. Over the next few weeks, the Wolverines focused on player and staff retention, and the LoanDepot Park contract was never signed.Duke defeated Michigan, 68-63, in February at Capital One Arena in Washington DC.Its not immediately clear if Michigan will replace Duke with another big-name game or find a mid-major opponent heading intothe holiday break, but it's worth keeping an eye on, particularly due to Boynton's incentive-laden contract. Boynton, an assistant on staff the past two years who was previously the head coach for seven years (2017-24) at Oklahoma State, must do two of the following: win 24 regular-season games, finish in the top four in the Big Ten (with ties), win the Big Ten Tournament or make the NCAA's Sweet 16, in order to lock in a second year at Michigan.Michigan still has a difficult schedule as the defending national champions, with games against UConn, Marquette, Villanova and the Players Era Festival, which includes Creighton, either Miami (Fla.) or TCU and then either Gonzaga, Kansas State, Baylor or Alabama.Michigan finished with the No. 1 overall strength of schedule in 2025-26.Make "Hail Yes!" your go-to Wolverines podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) or watch live on YouTube. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSetting the stage for JHX Hoops game 3 matchup vs Purple Reign in TBTLAWRENCE Kansas basketballs alumni team in the TBT, JHX Hoops, has the third game of a three-game series against Kansas States Purple Reign on Friday. So far in the series, each side has won a game. Purple Reign took the first game 80-61 on Tuesday in Manhattan, while JHX Hoops took the second 84-80 on Wednesday in Topeka. It took a significant comeback from JHX Hoops in game two to keep this series from coming to an end.RELATED: What channel is JHX Hoops vs Purple Reign TBT game? Time, TV scheduleHere are a few things to keep in mind, before JHX Hoops tips off against Purple Reign at 6 p.m. (CT) in Manhattan:Why JHX Hoops was able to mount a comeback in game 2Sherron Collins, listed as head coach for JHX Hoops on the TBT website, acknowledged that they are all human. When the team faced a significant second half deficit, that feeling that things are going the wrong way can creep in. Zeke Mayo, who plays on the team, acknowledged there were a few moments out there where he wondered if this series would come to an end in two games. But Collins also felt confidence that wouldnt happen Wednesday, because he saw something different in his team especially late in the third quarter. Mayo said they have a group of guys who dont quit, and hes excited to have another chance. JHX Hoops trailed by 14 points when the second half began, was able to get that down to eight by the time the Elam Ending started, and eventually won by four.Collins thinks they played better Wednesday than they played Tuesday, can play better Friday than they did Wednesday, and that the biggest key Friday is to be aggressive and hit first. Why Zeke Mayos confidence hasnt wavered, and hes kept shootingAcross the first two games, Mayo hasnt shot at the level he is capable of. But, he was much improved in game two. And in this second matchup, he hit a critical 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 79-78 as the teams chased a target score of 83.Mayo, who as someone from Lawrence appreciates the chance to compete in this rivalry, mentioned people like Collins, Tyshawn Taylor and all his teammates give him confidence to keep shooting the ball. Taylor, listed as player/GM/owner on the TBT website, noted as well that Mayo is getting good looks and not forcing shots. So, the job as a coach is to make sure Mayo continues to go after those opportunities because at some point they will go in.Mayo scored 15 points in game two while shooting 6-for-15 from the field, 3-for-9 from behind the arc and 0-for-2 from the free-throw line, after scoring 12 points in game one while shooting 2-for-9 from the field, 1-for-7 from behind the arc and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Why having Frank Mason III on the team matters so muchFrank Mason III hit the game-winning shot for JHX Hoops on Wednesday, going after his own miss as his side led 82-80 and putting it back in to clinch the victory. Collins described that as Mason just having relentless effort, and thinks Mason knew the first attempt wasnt going in so he went after the rebound. Collins noted Mason just has that will to win.Taylor said its important to have a good point guard on any team, and that in Mason they have a high-level player. Taylor added Mason will continue to improve as they go into Fridays game. Collins said theyre lucky that a player of that caliber has respect for them, and is coachable.Mason led JHX Hoops in scoring Wednesday, finishing with 23 points as he shot 9-for-22 from the field, 1-for-7 from behind the arc and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.Jordan Guskey covers University of Kansas Athletics at The Topeka Capital-Journal. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid intensify pursuit of Man City ace with talks underway over a contract until 2030Real Madrid intensify pursuit of Man City ace with talks underway over a contract until 2030As reported by Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Real Madrid have accelerated their efforts to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, with the Spanish international now identified as one of the clubs absolute top transfer priorities. Following days of internal deliberation, the reigning European champions are working intensively to secure the 30-year-olds signature, with talks underway with his camp over a lucrative contract proposal that would keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until June 2030.Secret meeting in PozueloThe operation has moved rapidly from internal discussions to concrete negotiations. As reported earlier in the week, a secret meeting took place recently in Pozuelo, an affluent suburb of Madrid, where club emissaries outlined the full scope of their project to the players agents.Real Madrid are pursuing Rodri. (Photo by Diego Souto/Getty Images)During these discussions, Real Madrid executives made their intentions unequivocal, offering a four-year deal that demonstrates immense faith in the midfielders longevity and physical condition. This move signals a definitive shift in strategy from Florentino Perez, who had previously been hesitant but has now changed his position on the transfer after witnessing Rodris dominant, Golden Ball-winning performances at the FIFA World Cup.The Manchester City standoffWhile Manchester City remain hopeful of extending the contract of their midfield anchor, the Premier League giants are losing leverage. Rodri has entered the final 12 months of his deal at the Etihad Stadium, which is set to expire in 2027.City executives are desperate to avoid a scenario where they lose a Ballon dOr contender for free next summer, but the players desire is proving pivotal. Manchester City want to retain Rodri. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)The journalist insists that a return to Spain is now considered a concrete option for the World Cup winner, who views a move to the Bernabeu as the ultimate culmination of his career.Mourinhos tactical pillarThe pursuit is also being heavily championed by head coach Jose Mourinho, who views Rodri as the missing piece in his tactical puzzle. The Portuguese tactician believes Rodris arrival would solidify Los Blancos spine for the next few years and is eager to sign him. However, negotiations over the transfer fee remain the final hurdle, with Manchester City likely to demand a premium despite the players precarious contract situation.0 Comments 0 Shares 51 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal could solve midfield problems with genius 42m dealArsenal could solve midfield problems with genius 42m dealArsenal Transfer News: Eduardo Camavinga Emerges as Smart Midfield OptionArsenal are clearly shopping at the top end of the market again, and that tells you plenty about where Mikel Arteta believes this squad stands. After ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, the next challenge is obvious, retain it, deepen the squad and give themselves a real chance in the Champions League. According to the Guardian, Eduardo Camavinga has entered the conversation as Arsenal weigh a serious midfield upgrade. The headline figure matters. Real Madrid are reportedly open to business at 50m-60m, which translates to roughly 42m-51m. In a market where proven elite midfielders often run well beyond that, it is the kind of valuation that makes executives sit up quickly. Arsenal are also said to be pushing towards a 70 million move for Bruno Guimaraes, their primary target, but Camavinga offers a different profile and arguably a better age curve.Camavinga Transfer Value Stands OutAt 23, Camavinga already brings the rsum of a veteran. Two La Liga titles, two Champions League wins and years spent competing inside one of the hardest dressing rooms in football. That experience matters, but so does the fit. He covers ground, wins duels and retrieves possession at a level Arsenal could use in bigger European nights, especially when control starts to slip.Photo: IMAGOThere is also the tactical knock-on effect. Put Camavinga in alongside Declan Rice and you give Rice more room to drive forward, press higher and influence matches in both penalty areas. That could be the real appeal here, not simply adding another good midfielder, but changing the geometry of Arsenals midfield.Arsenal Midfield Needs More Than NamesThe key issue is whether Arsenal can convince the player. Camavinga is understood to prefer staying at Real Madrid, and that is hardly surprising. Players generally do not sprint for the exit from the Bernabeu. Still, Madrids plans could shift if they make a huge move for Rodri, and once a club starts reshaping its midfield hierarchy, opportunities open up quickly.Arsenal must sell more than minutes and wages. They must sell status, responsibility and a defined role in a title-defending side. If they can do that, then this moves from speculative to credible very fast. Our ViewFrom an Arsenal perspective, this is the sort of report that grabs attention because it feels ambitious without being completely absurd. Camavinga is the kind of player you notice straight away, powerful, technically clean and comfortable in high-pressure matches. If there is even a narrow opening, Arsenal should be exploring it properly. There is a temptation to focus on the glamour of the name, but the bigger point is balance. Arsenal have built a very strong side, yet there are still moments when the midfield can look a touch rigid against elite opponents. Camavinga could change that. He would bring mobility, aggression and the ability to recover loose situations before they become dangerous. The Bruno Guimaraes angle makes sense too, but Camavinga feels like the more intriguing upside play. He is younger, arguably more dynamic and still has room to improve. That matters when you are trying to build a team that can stay at the top for several seasons. The doubt is obvious, why would he leave Real Madrid unless the picture there changes dramatically? That is fair. Arsenal cannot force that part. What they can do is be ready, present a serious sporting case and move decisively if the door opens. If the fee really lands around 42m-51m, then this has the makings of one of the most attractive midfield deals of the summer.0 Comments 0 Shares 52 Views 0 Reviews
