Here are our 10 breakout candidates for the preseason: Bears QB Tyson BagentPreseason really is for the backups, after all, and there might be no more intriguing QB2 than Caleb Williams' understudy. Bagent was one of the preseason standouts a year ago, throwing for five TDs and 511 yards in the three outings, which included a standout performance against the Chiefs in the finale.There was trade chatter this spring around Bagent, given the intriguing skills the former undrafted free agent had shown, including four emergency regular-season starts as a rookie in 2023. Everything is lined up for Tuten to have a really nice second season. Tuten had just 307 rushing yards as a rookie last season, but has talent and now he should have a great opportunity to be a lead back in a good offense. Tuten's usage in preseason will be interesting to track. If Tuten looks good in the preseason, he should enter the regular season as at least the leader in a timeshare with Rodriguez. And there's a chance he's a preseason star, and that's a harbinger for a very good second season. SchwabGiants DE Abdul Carter Carter had an odd rookie season. He came in with a ton of hype as the third overall pick of last year's draft, and had only four sacks. But the pressure stats were very good. He had the most quick pressures of any player in the NFL last season.The best guess is Carter turns a lot of those pressures into sacks this season. There's no better way to get off to a good start than having a strong preseason, which would be a good sight for new Giants head coach John Harbaugh. Everyone would be excited to see Carter have a big preseason heading into his second NFL season. SchwabRams TE Terrance FergusonOn the surface, you might say that Ferguson's rookie season was a disappointment, given that he caught only 11 passes on 25 targets in 350-plus snaps last season. Even for a slower-developing position such as tight end, the catch total is lean.But Ferguson also flashed quite a bit on those 11 catches, averaging 21 yards per grab and catching three TDs. The Rams continued to funnel the ball his way more and more as the season went on, and though it didn't always result in big plays, it showed how much faith Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford had in the rising prospect.Ferguson also showed he could hold his own as a blocker, which was something that wasn't viewed as a major strength entering the league. Although Tyler Higbee and Colby Parkinson remain options, it feels like Ferguson will get every opportunity to shine this season, and that will include some preseason flash plays. EdholmColts WR Josh DownsEveryone has been waiting for the big Downs breakout season. While he has been good, and efficient, he hasn't passed 70% of the Colts' offensive snaps in a season yet. With Michael Pittman Jr. off to Pittsburgh in a trade, that could change. Downs, at 171 pounds, might never be an every-down receiver but this is his opportunity to prove he can do it. Alec Pierce is the Colts' No. 1 receiver after signing a massive contract, but even he could miss a lot of training camp as he recovers from ankle surgery. Downs still has to show that he can be a staple in two-receiver sets for the Colts, and he might make strides toward that in the preseason. If he can become an unquestioned full-time player, he could have a huge regular season. SchwabJets TE Kenyon SadiqThere have been some flashy TE rookies in recent years who have parlayed a strong preseason into productive first years in the NFL. Colston Loveland and Tyler Warren both looked good in August a year ago. Sadiq is a clear choice for rookie TE standout of this year's preseason.Sadiq was a surprise pick to the Jets, but it was clear they badly needed to add more firepower to a limited offense. From a physical perspective, Sadiq could be a real ace for the Jets, even if he's not a complete player nor is he guaranteed a high-volume role as a receiver in the regular season.But the Jets were awful on third downs and even worse in the red zone. These are two clear areas where the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Sadiq can make his money and make his impact starting in preseason. Expect a heavy workload this August as a way of determining what Sadiq can do for the Jets' offense come Week 1. EdholmLions WR Isaac TeSlaaTeSlaa was a star of last preseason, tying for the NFL lead with three touchdown catches. He made some highlight plays during his rookie regular season too, but he wasn't a high-volume player in the offense. He caught six touchdowns on only 16 receptions. The Lions have a crowded offense, and TeSlaa has to do something special to improve his playing time. He should play plenty in the preseason, and he clearly has the ability to star on that stage. If he has another big preseason, it could force the Lions to find ways to get him on the field more with increased targets. SchwabSeahawks DT Rylie MillsA play you might have forgotten amid the hoopla of the Seahawks' Super Bowl LX dominance was a sack from a player with fewer than 40 NFL snaps. When Seattle drafted Mills in Round 5 last year, it was considered a wait-and-see pick while Mills was recovering from a torn ACL. He earned playing time down the stretch and was effective enough to earn Super Bowl snaps.This was Mills walking Patriots OG Jared Wilson back into Drake Maye for a 10-yard sack, and it was just a snapshot of the player he was at Notre Dame before suffering the injury in the College Football Playoffs against Indiana. EdholmRavens Edge Mike GreenGreen entered the NFL with plenty of baggage that caused him to slip from a potential first-round spot to well into Round 2. His play as a rookie was fine, although it arguably was a shade disappointing for a second-rounder, much less for someone with the talent to go higher. Even still, it was impossible to miss Green on tape with several almost sacks plays that I believe were indicative of future production.There's more room for optimism in Year 2 as Green is part of what looks to be a stronger Edge group in Baltimore, playing for a head coach in Jesse Minter who has a strong track record for making his teams' defenses better in his first year on a staff.With Trey Hendrickson, Calais Campbell and rookie Zion Young, the Edge competition looks strong, but there appears to be at the least a third-down role for Green to occupy and maybe even thrive in. Green and Young figure to receive a ton of preseason reps, and I think the second-year edge will have multiple sacks in the preseason and lock in a steady role by Week 1. EdholmBears S Dillon ThienemanThe Bears turned over their safeties in the offseason, and landed an exciting prospect by selecting Thieneman with the 25th pick of the NFL Draft. Thieneman was a playmaker at Purdue and Oregon, and his versatility is much needed in the Bears' defense. The Bears have some interesting players on a defense that didn't have a great season in 2025. Thieneman could end up helping coordinator Dennis Allen's play-calling if the rookie shows he understands the scheme and plays as fast in the NFL as he did in college. He's going to start this season, but the preseason will go a long way in showing how creative the Bears can get with him. It's pretty easy to envision Thieneman being one of the most exciting rookies we see in August, for a team that is trying to build on its NFC North championship season. Schwab

Now, we didnt get around to everything, but I am keeping all those questions logged and will try and get the answers to those in a future edition.Heres what we talked about this week:Was DDP great or Usman just washed?Question: Did DDP look much improved because of the age and size advantages he had over Usman or was it because hes actually leveled up that much? The answer cant be both ;). (Chucs)Andrew Richardson: The answer is both, but DDP was especially sharp. I wrote about all his improvements in detail RIGHT HERE!Jesse Holland: Like Khabib said, its easy to look like a lion when youre up against sheep (Im paraphrasing). The 39-year-old Usman is not washed up by any means but we have weight classes for a reason and Du Plessis is seven years younger.Alex Behunin: While DDP did look like he leveled up a lot, he is a big boy at Middleweight, and that played a lot into his win. He hurt Usman a lot, something that never really happened to him at WW.Thomas Myers: I feel like DDP let him off the hook more than once had Usman wobbling in almost every round. The fact that he was calm, patient and didnt rush into anything shows a high level of intelligence and restraint. I would have loved to see DDP get a finish, but I was impressed with his ability to stick to the script. He did look cartoon-ishly larger than Usman, but there are weight classes for a reason. Usman should stick to 170 and/or retire the Khamzat success might have over-inflated his already over-inflated ego.Tim Edwards: I think Du Plessis deserves a lot of credit. He followed a very smart gameplan and used great technique on those knees to disrupt Usmans takedowns and the headkick to make Usman wobbly for half the fight. I also dont think Usman is washed. He looked great against Buckley and I think theres some good Middleweights out there he can beat. He might not be able to ragdoll them around, but hes still good on his feet. He took a round off Du Plessis with his striking, after all (I also dont agree with those 50-45 scores).Excuses, excusesQ: After the fight, Usman has come out with an excuse that his sight was compromised in round two or three, leading to the loss. What do you think about that? And also what do you think about this trend of losing fighters coming out with some sort of major physical excuse or unprovable excuse thats why they lost or cant perform to their standard? (JudgefnMueller13)Andrew Richardson: Usman lost vision because DDP punched him in the face thats fighting! The explanation for why this happens is that fighting requires a certain level of delusion, so fighters have to explain to themselves why theyre still the Baddest Man On The Planet despite having just lost. If they dont believe that to be true, they stop winning entirely.Jesse Holland: Most fighters are very insecure and struggle to accept defeat. They are not trying to convince fans with these ridiculous excuses, they are trying to convince themselves. If you get punched in the eye by a trained fighter, chances are your vision will be compromised. Welcome to fighting. Usman was the underdog for a reason and perfect vision was not going to save him from defeat.Thomas Myers: Every fighter, almost always, is going to come into a fight with some type of bump, bruise, soreness something. Getting punched in the eye, mid-cage fight, is not a good excuse, at all. Its terribly ridiculous. I hope that once he watches it back, he will realize how stupid he sounded. But, maybe not? Maybe he will just switch up excuses and blame a torn pec for all those times DDP had him doing the Stanky Leg. Usman has a very fragile ego I think Belal proved that when he didnt like the words being used against him during that podcast dust up. Its hard going from Welterweight GOAT to self-proclaimed Moneyweight fighter at age 40.Tim Edwards: I think were being a little unkind to Usman with all this. I think Alex Pereiras unusual response to his fight with Cyril Gane have us all feeling a little fatigue when it comes to excuses. Usmans complaints about his vision are fair. He was punched in the eye and it did affect him. In the post-fight chat he didnt call that a foul or anything. He rightly said it was a punch where the thumb his his eye. So I dont think this is a trend, so much as we are just more sensitive to these things after Freedom 250.Whats next at Middleweight?Q:The top of the middleweight division is kind of chaotic at the moment. DDP looked great against Usman. Hes beat Strickland twice, but was fully outclassed by Borz. So, if you were the matchmaker for the next title shot, what do you think makes the most sense for both the company and us fans? Keeping in mind that any decision involving booking Khamzat likely holds the division up for 8-10 months (Fighting_From_The_Couch)Andrew Richardson: Book Strickland vs. Imavov next, then DDP vs. Brendan Allen winner (aka DDP) takes on the victor. Send Borz up to Light Heavyweight like he wanted in the immediate aftermath of the Strickland loss.Jesse Holland: Beating a rickety welterweight who is way past his prime didnt really do anything for Dricus Du Plessis except cure his wounded ego. Sorry Khamzat, but you dont get an immediate rematch without a single title defense and Nassourdine Imavov has earned his shot at the strap after beating Israel Adesanya and Jared Cannonier. Id like to see Du Plessis fight No. 5-ranked Brendan Allen and Khamzat fight No. 4-ranked Joe Pyfer.Alex Behunin: I dont believe Khamzat Chimaev deserves an immediate title shot with no title defenses and as much as I dont care for Nassourdine Imavov, he clearly deserves a crack at the title. DDP should probably get another shot but beating Usman doesnt really do anything so he can fight Brendan Allen like Andrew said.Thomas Myers: Strickland is dealing with a shoulder injury that could sideline him until late 2026 / early 2027. Imavov is next man up, but thats a long time to wait (last fight was Sept. 2025). Imavov vs. DDP for interim title / true No. 1 contender? Seems like a very UFC-like thing to do. It would be a fun one, too.I like Brendan Allen vs. Joe Pyfer. The Khamzat rematch will be there whenever UFC wants it (and whenever Khamzat is ready). I have zero interest in Strickland vs. Khamzat 2 if I am being totally honest. I have zero interest in Sean Strickland, ever, actually so interim title it is!Tim Edwards: A title elimination between DDP and Chimaev makes a lot of sense, but I think its unfeasible given how unreliable Chimaev is. Id like to see Imavov given a chance, just to freshen things up. Hes earned it with his winning streak and the fact Strickland beat him once doesnt matter, considering how many of the other fights on tap are all rematches.Time running out for Makhachev?Q: With the Islam Garry fight upcoming, how much tread does Islam have left on his career? Is a loss to an annoying and perhaps less than favored by the fans opponent who is physically much bigger a significant blow to islams career, does he then go back to 55 or does he forge ahead and stay the path at 170? Or is there another scenario that possible? (Chucs)Jesse Holland: If Islam loses, I think he sticks around at 170 for at least one more fight. Moving up was as much about the weight cut as it was about the belt. Cant imagine hes in any big hurry to revisit 155 after turning 35 in October.Alex Behunin: It just feels like Islam is going to dip out sooner rather than later. It would be hard to see him retire off a loss, so assuming he loses, hed probably fight one more timeAndrew Richardson: Impossible to say exactly, but I would be surprised if Islam fights more than three times total (counting Garry as one).Thomas Myers: Islam Makhachev is not losing to Ian Machado-Garry. And then he probably smokes Carlos Prates or Michael Morales one of those types. Then, I think, UFC should give him the one-off chance to get a third belt at Middleweight. His Lightweight championship resume is sorta weird, beating a Featherweight (twice) and two short notice replacements (Moicano and Poirier). Id like to see if he is who he says he is. Ride off into the sunset, triple champ the only way to eclipse his mentor, Khabib. Id bet the house he beats Sean Strickland tomorrow if given the opportunity.Tim Edwards: I dont think Makhachev is going to be around much longer. Hes following the example set out by Nurmagomedov and he already seems to be at the stage where he becoming a team captain/coach. I think a win over Garry Machado might be a fitting swansong for him (the Nurmagomedov path also includes going out on top). This would be unsatisfying to us, since there are a lot of good contenders at 170. But thats also part of the Nurmagomedov playbook right, leave them wanting more. I also think, like Nurmagomedov, Makhachev seems to be pretty satisfied with life overall and doesnt need training camps and fights to find meaning. I think he might be very content to fight once or twice and then just enjoy his money and his farm up in the mountains.RAF/Tsarukyan falloutQ: Arman Tsarukyen got beat finally by Covington in RAF this weekend, after putting together a nice run of grappling wins. So does the UFC finally get the #2 lightweight his title opportunity (after narrowly missing the makachev fight with an injury) or do they go in a different direction now that he isnt on a huge superstar-esque combat sports win streak. Because then the UFC would have had to really pay Arman, had he come back, won the 155 title, while also holding a RAF grappling title and being able to call his title win. (Kinda like McGregor) (JudgefnMueller13)Alex Behunin: I honestly believe the UFC brass doesnt even watch RAF so Arman has nothing to worry about. Everything is pointing to him fighting Charles Oliveira in LA at UFC 331 I would expect that announcement soon.andQ: Chaos just outwrestled Tsarukyan, the UFCs #2 lightweight. at a RAF event this weekend. As to the UFCs ability to market Arman in a future title fight, does that loss matter? Further, do any of these RAF side quests affect the UFCs bottom line? And if so, when (hypothetically) would Dana draw the line? (TheSassingMachine)Andrew Richardson: I dont think the UFC is looking at RAF records when making decisions. Best case scenario, their guys pick up a few new IG followers before their next cage fight. Otherwise, I doubt it matters much.Jesse Holland: Covington is the bigger athlete and the more credentialed wrestler so Im not sure why everyone is shocked that Arman got handled. I also dont think UFC cares (or even knows) what RAF is doing so long as nobody gets hurt. Once Khamzat Chimaev or Gable Steveson or another big name blows out their knee or something you can forget about all these goofy crossovers. UFC will book Arman after it has exhausted all possible title options; which it hasnt, so expect Tsarukyan to continue his side quests.Thomas Myers: I dont think winning, or losing, in RAF has any impact whatsoever on UFC matchmaking. Having said that, I think that Armans RAF run has been impressive and has kept his name in the headlines more than if he was just trolling on social media. So, I think the positive, consistent visibility helps Arman specifically at a time when UFC sorta hoped he would just go away. Eventually the dam will bust loose, but for now, UFC seems very okay with him not competing for a UFC title because hes viewed as perhaps difficult to work with. UFCs bottomline is, and will continue to be, more than fine with our without RAF.Tim Edwards: I dont think the UFC cares that much about what fighters are and arent available. Their business model is now just putting live bodies in the cage and knowing that the letters U-F-C are what people are paying to see. They make their money on site fees, extremely high ticket prices, government contracts and TV deals sweetened by their powerful connections. They do not need to draw an audience to be successful. What do we make of Tommy McMillen?Q: Macmillan looks a ton of fun, hes also young and massive, its still very early days and he looks like a killer but how long can he stay at 145 before the cut is just to much and does he have the tools to get to the top within that timeline? (Chucs)Andrew Richardson: Tommy Gun has the tools to be a Top 20 or so guy, but there are too many sharp strikers at Featherweight to let him be more than a fun action fighter.Jesse Holland: Most fighters can stay at the same weight for the majority of their career if they treat fighting like a full-time job. You would be shocked at the number of high-level fighters who do close to nothing when theyre not in camp. Its not old age that brings an end to these weight classes, its the years of yo-yo dieting and crash cuts.Alex Behunin: I personally dont think he looks bigger than the other big Featherweights. Hell crush all of the shitty Featherweights, but the day he gets matched up with a good striker, hes getting decapitated ala Jose Delgado, Lerryan Douglas, Kevin Vallejos.Thomas Myers: I would love to see Tommy Gun try out that style against Kevin Vallejos, who is ranked No. 10. Here are all the best moments from last night in Major League Baseball: The team that's second in the National League in home runs played the part on Thursday afternoon. As part of a 6-4 victory over the San Diego Padres, the Atlanta Braves hit four home runs, those being solo homers from center fielder Michael Harris III, second baseman Ozzie Albies and catcher Drake Baldwin and a then-go-ahead, three-run homer from designated hitter Dominic Smith in the bottom of the fourth inning. On the hill, Atlanta got six innings from ace Chris Sale, who gave up three runs but racked up 11 strikeouts. San Diego later pulled within one run in the eighth inning on a two-run home run from first baseman Ty France and got two runners on the basepath in the ninth, but Braves closer Raisel Iglesias eventually shut the door for his 21st save of the season; Iglesias, who was a first-time All-Star this year, is 21 for 22 in save situations. The Braves (60-42) took three out of four at home against the Padres, are 5-2 since the All-Star break and have a four-and-a-half-game lead on the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East. On one hand, the Braves are an NL contender. On the other hand, the 2026 season has been a slog for the Padres, who have been a perennial playoff team but now looked poised to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. On that more, could fellow relievers Bradgley Rodriguez (2.05 ERA across 44.0 innings pitched) and Wandy Peralta (3.02 ERA across 50 innings pitched) entice a contender? Maybe somebody takes a flier on France, who's on an expiring contract, has blasted 16 home runs and sports a career-high .547 slugging percentage over 77 games? These are questions the Padres are compelled to start asking. It took a minute and wasn't pretty, but the Minnesota Twins got a road victory to salvage a series split with the Cleveland Guardians. After four scoreless innings, Guardians catcher Patrick Bailey broke the tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. The Twins evened up the score in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Alan Roden, which ultimately sent the game to extra innings. After both teams failed to plate a run in the 10th and 11th innings, the Twins went up for good on back-to-back RBI singles from Trevor Larnach who boasts an .843 OPS and Luke Keaschall in the top of the 12th, winning 3-1. On the mound, right-hander Taj Bradley surrendered just one run and five baserunners (three walks and two hits) over seven innings. By the way, the Twins (51-53) are just two-and-a-half-games behind the Boston Red Sox for the third American League wild-card seed and four-and-a-half games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central. Yes, it came in a losing effort, but Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams was stellar across the board against the Twins. Williams gave up no runs and just two baserunners (two hits), while recording 11 strikeouts over seven innings. Moreover, he had an immaculate inning in the top of the fourth. It was the seventh time this season Williams pitched through the seventh inning and marked his fourth shutout (zero earned runs) of the 2026 campaign. Through 21 starts, Williams has recorded a 3.78 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, a 110 ERA+, 2.0 wins above replacement and logged an AL-high 156 strikeouts over an AL-high 126 innings pitched. Has there been an awakening? In beating the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night, the Detroit Tigers (49-54) have now won 15 of their last 22 contests, are four games behind the Red Sox for the third AL wild-card seed and six games behind the White Sox for first place in the AL Central. As for its latest win, Detroit trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth before center fielder James Outman lifted a go-ahead, three-run home run to right field. Later, after Kansas City got one of those runs back to level the scoreboard in the top of the eighth, catcher Dillon Dingler put Detroit up for good in the bottom half of the inning, rocketing an RBI double down the left-field line. Dingler and left fielder Zach McKinstry each tallied two hits for the Tigers, while the Royals' first two runs came on a two-run homer from left fielder Isaac Collins in the top of the sixth. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Kansas City, which had previously won five of its last six games. The Toronto Blue Jays ended a four-game skid and stopped the AL East-rival Tampa Bay Rays from getting a four-game series sweep on the road. In what was a 3-1 victory for Toronto, it scored its three runs on an infield single from Alejandro Kirk in the bottom of the first, an RBI single from designated hitter George Springer in the third and an RBI single from first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Jays got a terrific start from Shane Bieber, who surrendered just one run and three baserunners (three hits) over seven innings. It was the longest start of the year for Bieber in what was just his sixth outing altogether (the right-hander missed the first three months of the season due to elbow inflammation). Regarding the Thursday win, Tyler Rogers and Louis Varland proceeded to pitch back-to-back, one-two-three innings in relief of Bieber to seal off the Toronto victory. Back to the Blue Jays' offensive output, their first run came in wonky fashion. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Kirk hit a ground ball to the left side that Rays third baseman Junior Caminero couldn't field, and the ball bounced away from him. With that in mind, Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement ran on contact, rounded third base after the bobble and came home to score from second base on the grounder. Clement earned his first career All-Star nod this year, with the infielder hitting a career-high .296 and being tied for fifth in the sport with 114 hits. Unfortunately for Kirk, a two-time All-Star, the 2026 campaign has been a struggle, with the catcher being limited to just 32 games due to a head injury and hitting a career-low .219. The D-backs trailed the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but they took the lead in said frame and never looked back. Shortly after a Tim Tawa sacrifice fly, first baseman Tyler Locklear hit a go-ahead, line-drive, two-run home run to left field for Arizona, with catcher Gabriel Moreno then bringing home a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. The D-backs would later take command with a five-run eighth inning, with RBI singles from Locklear, Moreno, designated hitter Adrian Del Castillo and Nolan Arenado who also singled home a run in the ninth and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Corbin Carroll. Arizona had four players total three hits (Moreno, Del Castillo, Locklear and Ildemaro Vargas), with right-hander Brandon Pfaadt giving up just two runs over six innings. St. Louis did make the final scoreboard look more commendable, though, getting four runs off Arizona reliever Ryan Thompson in the bottom of the ninth on a pair of two-run singles from Bryan Torres and Lars Nootbaar; the D-backs won 10-6, delivering the Cardinals their sixth loss in eight contests. The D-backs have scored 25 combined runs in their last two games and have won five of their last six. They also swept the Dodgers in Los Angeles in their final series before the All-Star break. This may be the most under-the-radar team in the sport. Don't look now, but Arizona is 54-49, which is good for the third NL wild-card seed.
