He has a deep pitching repertoire, as Gusto does not throw particularly hard. But the right-hander will use his four-seam, cutter, and breaking ball to strike out left-handed batters. The movement keeps them off-balance during their at-bats.The Marlins have struggled to begin the second half of the 2026 season, as the team is 1-9 in their last 10 games. At the All-Star break, the club held the final wild card position. But now, the Marlins find themselves two games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks.German Marquez (4-2, 5.24 ERA) takes the ball and is determined to end the Padres recent slide. He has pitched better since coming off the IL. Marquez has become more effective by working on a pitch count that allows him to go through an opposing lineup once.The right-hander has averaged three-plus innings since returning to the starting rotation. But to be effective, Marquez must avoid contact, which is impossible with the lowest strikeout rate (13.8%) among all major league starters.The offense scored 21 runs in the four-game set against the Braves. The hope is the bats remain alive this weekend. It would be the perfect time for Miami native Manny Machado to put on a show for the home folks. LOS ANGELES The NFLs newest Super Team and heavy favorites to win the Super Bowl want all the smoke. Thats according to the Los Angeles Rams' newest addition, reigning league Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, who made that clear at the teams unveiling of new uniforms in front of a packed house of season ticket holders at the YouTube Theater on Thursday. When Garrett was asked which NFC West team he looked forward to playing this season, he pointed north on I-5 to the Pacific Northwest and the defending champion Seattle Seahawks. "I want the champs," Garrett said, with a rowdy crowd roaring its approval. "They won it all, and Ive got to see what thats about. They feel like theyve got the pieces to run it back, and I feel like weve got the pieces to take over." With one of the most loaded rosters in recent memory, Rams MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford said he embraces the challenge, operating in the ultra-competitive environment of Los Angeles since relocating from St. Louis 10 years ago. The Rams took a similar approach in 2021, loading up on stars like Odell Beckham Jr., Von Miller, Jalen Ramsey and Eric Weddle, which led to the teams first Super Bowl victory since moving back to Los Angeles five years ago. That Super Bowl was played at their home field, SoFi Stadium, which is where this season's Super Bowl will be played, too. "Ive been around long enough to know that you have to go out and earn it every day," Stafford said. "And thats really the fun part, is getting to earn that, right? Not sitting here and talking about it, seeing what we look like on paper. So, well OK, lets go out there and pump the football up, and see if we can score some points and stop some people. Thats kind of where my heads at." Rams team president Kevin Demoff addressed the most pressing question this offseason of defensive game wrecker Aaron Donald potentially returning, saying the franchise will continue to take a patient approach in the possibility of the four-time Defensive Player of the Year playing football again after retiring two years ago. "We dont have a ring, or a Lombardi Trophy or a banner if not for Aaron Donald," Demoff said. "I think Sean [McVay] said it best yesterday. If Aaron wants to return, we will wait with open arms. Its his decision, his choice. But theres not a day that goes by that I dont wake up refreshing social media, seeing if theres a post or hoping that theres a text that says, You up?" Added Stafford: "Whatevers right for him will be right for all of us." While the team hasn't set a timetable for Donald to decide whether to potentially unretire, a league source close to Donald told me he is leaning toward returning. Donald participated in a workout in full pads at the teams facility two weeks ago. As for the matter at hand on Thursday night, the two alternate uniforms the Rams introduced "Classic Sol" and "Fearsome White" celebrate the franchises championship history and iconic legacy, according to the team. The "Classic Sol" uniform celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Rams' 1951 championship team, while the "Fearsome White" honors the legendary Fearsome Foursome defensive line of Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier that dominated the NFL during the 1960s and early 1970s. Grier, the oldest living former Ram at 94 years old, attended the uniform unveiling. "These uniforms are a celebration and reminder of the moments and people that built the Rams into what and who we are today," said Kathryn Kai-Iing Frederick, chief marketing officer for the Rams. "Every detail was intentionally designed to honor the grit and greatness of our history while delivering a modern look for today's players and fans." The Rams will wear the Classic Sol uniform a combination of yellow jersey and white pants for the first time in a Week 2 home contest against the New York Giants. The Rams will also wear them in a Week 13 home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The debut of the Fearsome White combination will be on their Thanksgiving Eve home matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Hall of Fame running back and Rams legend Eric Dickerson was on hand for the unveiling. Dickerson told me he wasnt a fan of the Classic Sol and still wants the franchise to return to the classic horns look on the teams helmets. But he praised the Rams for paying respect to the teams history with the return to the traditional all-white uniforms. "It kind of reminds me of the Fearsome Foursome," Dickerson said. "I wish we would have worn those uniforms."

Funeral services were held Friday for Janice McNair, Houston Texans co-founder and senior chair. (Brett Coomer/Houston Chronicle) Hundreds of people gathered Friday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church for the funeral of Houston Texans co-founder Janice McNair."She was exceptional," said Cal McNair, Janice's son and the current CEO and chair of the Texans.McNair died July 14 of natural causes. She was 89.Throughout the service, McNair's graciousness, her ability to make others feel seen and her impact on the lives of others were common threads speakers touched upon during the service.LEGACY OF GIVING:Janice McNair's actions away from football were manyCal said the four main pillars in her mother's life were faith, family, philanthropy and football.Among the people in attendance at the service included Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Johnson, Texas legend J.J. Watt, current Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, former head coach Gary Kubiak, general manager Nick Caserio, quarterback C.J. Stroud, Mayor John Whitmire and several other players.She co-founded the Texans with her late husband Bob in 1999. The McNairs had first moved to Houston nearly four decades before in 1960 with Bob making his mark in the business world with Cogen Technologies, which became the largest privately held power company in the country.The Texans played their first season in 2002. Following Bob's death in 2018, McNair was the team's principal owner until 2024 when Cal took over the role.In addition to her role with the Texans, McNair was also a dedicated philanthropist. She and her husband donated more than half a billion dollars in their lifetimes and started three charities, all of which McNair chaired."Alongside Bob, she helped bring the NFL back to her beloved Houston and played an essential role in building the Texans into an organization that reflects the values they held dear - service, integrity, and commitment to community," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement after McNair's death.The McNairs gave money to a variety of causes in the local Houston community, including to local educational and medical institutions.McNair was bornin 1936 and grew up in Orangeburg, S.C. She attended Columbia (S.C) College.She and Bob married in 1957. They had four children, sons Cal and Cary and daughters Melissa and Ruth, 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.Cal said it is comforting to know his parents are together once again."They shared an extraordinary partnership," Cal said.McNair was the fourth person inducted into the Texans Ring of Honor, joining her husband, Johnson and Watt.Johnson, who played for the Texans from 2003 to 2014, said being able to speak about McNair as part of the service is one of his life's greatest honors.The McNairs didn't just give him a football contract, Johnson said, they gave him a family.Johnson highlighted Janice's strength and how she celebrated the Texans players more so for who they were as people than for their football accomplishments.He also noted that while he might have been the first player inducted into the Texans Ring of Honor, Janice was the example for everyone."We love you," Johnson said. Patrick Mahomes has been cleared fully to participate in training camp, Andy Reid said.The Kansas City Chiefs coach took the podium Friday to start training camp with another encouraging sign for the Chiefs recovering quarterback.Just over seven months since Mahomes suffered season-ending ACL and LCL tears on December 14, doctors have given Mahomes full clearance for camp.Clearance to practice and do all the different periods of practice we have, Reid said.Doctors will monitor Mahomes progress and response to the work daily.But right now, ehs been cleared to go ahead and participate fully, Reid said.The NFL schedule makers bet that Mahomes would heal quickly.

Though he tore his ACL in December, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been fully cleared to practice, head coach Andy Reid said in his Friday press conference. "Im optimistic, and I know he is extremely optimistic," Reid said. "But I think youve got to see how things go here. Lets just see where were at and not make any predictions or anything else. Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies reported to camp on Friday, which inherently gives the QBs a little more ramp-up time before the rest of the squad reports on July 28. But either way, Reid doesn't anticipate Mahomes' reps will be any different in camp. "Well see about games and all that once we get there. But right now, were just going to take it day by day and see how he does," Reid said. "But hes been given clearance."Hes been up here every day, doing his thing, rehabbing. I mentioned before how much time he spent if anybody spent time doing this thing the right way, hes it. We appreciate that. And hes been given clearance by the doctors to work. And theyre pretty comfortable with that. But keeping an eye on him."
