Indianapolis tennis legend Barbara Wynne passed away on July 18 at the age of 93.Wynnes family goes way beyond her six children, 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The Shortridge High School graduate was a massive force in Central Indiana tennis, paving the way for young talent to thrive in the sport.Wynne helped establish the North Side Tennis Club in 1964, which eventually became the Indianapolis Community Tennis Program. Wynne began the public tennis program with the vision that tennis can enhance ones athletic ability, as well as ones personal life, according toICTP.Wynnes program went from her backyard court to eight courts at North Central, where thirty courts and a tennis house were eventually built. Washington Township completed a multi-million-dollar renovation of the tennis house in 2003. The 30-court facility was named the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center.In 1984, twenty years after founding her tennis club, Wynnes program began Kids Helping Kids, a charity project to benefit Riley Childrens Foundation. Young tennis players raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Riley Hospital for Children.Barbara helped establish the Indianapolis chapter of the National Junior Tennis League in 1973 and served as president of the Central Indiana Tennis Association from 1987 to 1988. Wynne created the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest on behalf of the NJTL national committee and served as its chair for 21 years.The tennis pioneer was president of the Indianapolis Junior Tennis Development Fund for 40 years and chaired 11 Womens Tennis Association professional tournaments in Indianapolis from 1984 through 1994.Barbara worked tirelessly to create a place where every child could learn the game and have the opportunity to reach his or her personal best, Wynnes obituary reads.Little did Wynne know when she was learning the sport as a young girl at the Woodstock Club in Indianapolis that shed leave the world with an undeniable, unmatched legacy.Wynne was inducted into the Indiana High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002 and the United States Tennis Association Midwest Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2018, Wynne was named a Tennis Legend at The Childrens Museum of Indianapolis Riley Childrens Health Sports Legends Experience and honored with a bronze statue. In 2020, North Central gifted Wynne a letter jacket inscribed with Dr. of Tennis.Tennis was one of Barbaras greatest passions, but for her, the sport was never simply about winning, Wynnes obituary reads. She believed tennis could build confidence, discipline, friendships and opportunity. Every summer, there are a handful of storylines in the NBA that span outside of the sports fanbase and become worldwide stories. On Friday, that story hit the news wires, with NBA superstar LeBron James announcing that he would sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, likely to end his career. One of the most interesting revelations in the whole ordeal was that James would be signing the veteran's minimum, taking a pay cut with the Sixers in order to help aid their roster construction. This means he will make only $4 million in 2026. In other words, this means that James, one of the greatest basketball players in the history of the game, will make less money in 2026 than Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. After turning down a spot in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Moore chose to come back to Eugene for one more year. Of course, there was likely a hefty NIL deal in it for him as well, with On3 estimating that he will make $5 million this year with the Ducks. That amount is an estimate, though, and there's a good chance Moore is earning more than that through all of his various NIL deals. The Detroit Lions enter training camp facing new questions at cornerback, and longtime beat writer Dave Birkett believes some of those concerns could have been addressed months ago.During an appearance on Crunch Time Sports on Woodward Sports Network, Birkett questioned whether Detroit general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell did enough to protect the roster against the possibility that Terrion Arnolds legal situation could worsen.Arnold, a former first-round pick, had been connected to allegations involving an alleged kidnapping and robbery plot dating back to February. Arnolds attorney and representatives denied the allegations.The Lions publicly stood behind Arnold while the situation developed. Birketts concern centers less on that public support and more on whether the organization should have created a stronger contingency plan at cornerback.Birkett Believes the Warning Signs Were ClearBirkett argued that the reporting available before free agency should have encouraged Detroit to prepare for the possibility that Arnold might not remain available.I dont think they did enough. I think it was pretty obvious to anyone who had done any reporting or investigating on the matter, you know, way back in February or March, that Terrion Arnold could be caught up in some of this stuff, said Birkett. The Lions should have done a little bit more to prepare for potentially losing him. Obviously you signed Roger McCreary, re-signed Rock Ya-Sin; those are nice veteran depth additions.The Lions were not in position to know exactly what would happen with Arnold. His representatives denied his involvement, and Campbell publicly expressed confidence in the young cornerbacks version of events.As of a month ago, this was nothing. So I have no idea what this is. As far as I know, its still not a big deal. It seems like he wasnt involved with this. So, weve got some things there, and well just take it as it comes, Campbell explained. Until something happens, I feel like were going to be good here. Im going to trust what the kid said. I think were alright.From Birketts perspective, trusting Arnold did not prevent the Lions from making an additional move at the position.That is where his criticism lands.Lions Added Depth, But Not a Clear ReplacementDetroit did make several additions to its secondary.The Lions signed Roger McCreary, brought back Rock Ya-Sin and selected Keith Abney in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Each move gave defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard another option.Birkett does not appear to view those additions as enough to fully stabilize the room.McCreary has moved around during his NFL career and has experience playing in the slot. Ya-Sin offers veteran experience, but he was initially viewed more as a depth piece than a replacement for a former first-round pick.Abney may eventually develop into an important contributor. Expecting a fifth-round rookie to immediately solve a starting cornerback concern would be a considerable challenge.The 2026 draft class was viewed as deep at cornerback, yet Detroit addressed other positions before selecting Abney.Birkett believes the Lions could have used free agency or an earlier draft pick to add another player capable of competing for a major role.Birkett Separates Arnolds Talent From His ProductionBirkett also pushed back against the idea that Arnold had already established himself as Detroits unquestioned No. 1 cornerback.Lets not pretend like Terrion Arnold, even though he was the first-round pick, was was some number one cornerback that was ultimately going be the biggest hindrance to this defense losing him. He was the most talented cornerback on the roster, but he wasnt the best cornerback, Birkett added. And so, I think the Lions could have done more, should have done more way back in free agency, potentially the draft just to bolster that room in general. That distinction matters when evaluating the current situation.Arnolds departure did not remove a proven All-Pro cornerback from Detroits defense. It removed a talented young player the Lions believed could eventually become one.There was still projection involved.The Lions were counting on Arnolds athletic ability, experience and first-round pedigree translating into a larger role. Without him, Detroit must determine whether its remaining options can provide consistent production.Birketts argument is not simply that Detroit needed to replace Arnolds previous performance. It is that the Lions should have strengthened the position regardless of how Arnolds legal situation developed.Ennis Rakestraw Jr.s Health Adds Another QuestionEnnis Rakestraw Jr. is one of the players who could benefit from the opening.The former second-round pick has dealt with injuries early in his NFL career, limiting his ability to secure a consistent role in Detroits secondary. His talent remains intriguing, but the Lions still need to learn whether he can stay healthy and handle an expanded workload.Birkett pointed to Rakestraws uncertainty as another reason Detroit could have added more insurance.I do think the Lions are a little bit thin at that position, Birkett said. I would have liked to have seen them do more, given Terrions legal status and obviously not knowing exactly what Ennis Rakestraw is going to be or how healthy he is going to be.D.J. Reed also enters the season after an injury-plagued 2025 campaign. Detroit may be comfortable with its options, but several of those options come with questions involving health, experience or role.That creates one of the most important competitions of Lions training camp.Detroit Will Get a Fast Answer During Training CampThe Lions now need their remaining cornerbacks to turn opportunity into production.Rakestraw could emerge as a starter. Ya-Sin may prove capable of handling a larger role. McCreary could bring versatility to the secondary, while Abney may develop faster than expected.Detroits coaching staff has earned a reputation for finding roles that fit its players. The Lions have also shown a willingness to trust internal development rather than chase high-priced veterans.Birketts comments raise a fair roster-building question: Did Detroit leave itself with too many uncertain outcomes at one position?The answer will begin to take shape once camp practices start and the Lions determine which cornerbacks can hold up on the outside.Bottom LineDave Birkett believes the Detroit Lions should have done more to prepare for the possibility of losing Terrion Arnold.His criticism focuses on Detroits offseason planning, not whether the organization was right or wrong to publicly support Arnold before his legal situation developed further.The Lions added several cornerbacks, but they did not acquire an obvious replacement with proven No. 1 ability. Detroit is now relying on a combination of veterans, developing players and former draft picks to stabilize the position.Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell may believe that group is good enough.Training camp will show whether their confidence was justified.

Alex Bowmans surprise retirement announcement caught much of the NASCAR world off guard Thursday, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver says the decision wasnt driven by the reason many fans assumed.Speaking Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one day after announcing he will retire from full-time Cup Series competition following the 2027 season, Bowman explained that his future plans are centered less on what hes leaving behind and more on the life he wants to build once hes steps away from racing.Despite battling concussions, a broken back and, more recently, a bout of vertigo earlier this season, Bowman said his health wasnt the deciding factor.Instead, after nearly two decades chasing a racing career, hes ready for something different.Bowman says retirement isnt about injuriesBowman acknowledged the physical toll racing has taken but made it clear he still believes he can compete at NASCARs highest level.I dont think physical health is the No. 1 contributor here in this situation for me, Bowman said. Obviously, Ive had my fair share of injuries, but I still feel like I can do it, and I think through everything weve figured out through the course of this season, everybody helping me in the athletic center with PT every day and everything, I think Im in a good spot there and can continue doing it.Instead, Bowman said hes simply reached a point where other goals have become more important.I think for me, much more of it is things I want to do outside the race car, other goals I have in life, and stuff I want to do. If it was straight up that I cant do this anymore, it probably would have been this year, but I do feel like I can do it at a high level. Hopefully we can go prove that.The 33-year-old announced Thursday that he signed a one-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports that will allow him to finish his Cup career after the 2027 season, giving both himself and the organization time to prepare for the transition.Alex Bowman already knows what comes nextUnlike many retiring drivers who leave the door open for a comeback, Bowman said he has no intention of racing full-time beyond 2027, even if everything goes perfectly.Im just not going to continue racing, he said. I would love to end on a really high note, like everything goes perfect and we go win a championship and I could walk out that way. That would be amazing. Thats not going to make me want to stay.He added that his decision comes down to wanting a more normal life.For me, health-wise, mental health-wise, kind of everything, this is what I needed to do that would be best for me and the things I want to do outside of the car.Bowman said he has never envisioned racing well into his 40s like many of his peers. Instead, he hopes to spend more time with his Sprint and Midget racing team while continuing to work with Rick Hendricks automotive business.Hendrick Motorsports president Jeff Andrews indicated Bowman will remain part of the Hendrick family after his driving career ends, noting there are opportunities within the organization beyond the cockpit.For Bowman, thats exactly the future he has in mind.After spending years fighting for opportunities, filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2016 before eventually becoming a full-time Hendrick Motorsports driver, Bowman said hes grateful for everything the journey has given him, even if the statistics dont fully reflect what he hoped to accomplish.I mean, it has been a journey for sure, Bowman said. It hasnt gone exactly as I would have hoped in some ways, but at the same time, I have learned so much. I have grown so much as a person.I have gotten to have incredible teammates, learn from some awesome people, and be part of an amazing organization. I have had a lot of fun. Even though the stat sheet might not read how I want it to, its still been great in a lot of ways.
