GPblog hears in Hungary that if Red Bull manages to achieve the goal stated on Friday, then he won't need to quit the team.Pierre Wach leaned a little forward on the red couch and said the words Verstappen wants to hear: "Going for wins this year is what we aim for,"said the technical director of Red Bull Racing in response to a question from GPblog. Whether that will happen in Hungary, however, is very uncertain.Verstappen finished a messy second free practice in fourth place, but the gap to the leading Ferraris was vast. The Dutchman conceded a full seven tenths to Lewis Hamilton, the fastest man at the Hungaroring. No doubt Red Bull has something in the toolbox to go quicker on Saturday, however, the Scuderia wont be standing still either.Theres more in it for VerstappenAll in all, its positive for Verstappen that hes competing at the front rather than (still) circulating in the midfield. After several updates in recent weeks, thats surely the biggest gain. And anyone listening to Wach knows theres more to come. In fact, all the tweaks and improvements on the way, in the technical directors ideal scenario, should lead to a first win of the season.Verstappen winning in the RB22 - it would be a huge turnaround in such a tough start to the season. It could also be Red Bulls ultimate argument to the Dutchman in their pursuit of a commitment for next season - if thats even still necessary. Although Verstappen has yet to state out loud what his exact plans are for next year, it increasingly looks like Red Bull will remain his home.'Verstappen stays with Red Bull'Speaking with various teams in Formula 1 - who know full well whats going on behind the scenes - you hear the same story over and over: Verstappen isnt going anywhere, despite a flirtation with McLaren. Other than matchdays themselves, its probably the most exciting part of football and, over the summer, when were starved of meaningful action, its what most supporters crave to build anticipation ahead of the new season.If I take a step back, though, I think its important for myself and others to remember the context of this window.Last summer was the exception rather than the norm. The squad needed an almost complete rebuild, so time was of the essence to get players through the door and give them time to gel.In previous seasons under this ownership, weve done the bulk of our business towards the end of the window rather than at the start. Admittedly, even by those standards, one incoming by 23 July seems slow, but if you compare the deals we completed in those summers, the early arrivals were predominantly free transfers and loans. These are not the markets well really be looking to exploit any more.This ownership group has also always been open in its belief that better value for money is found towards the end of the window than at the beginning, so patience will be key as we wait for news of the squad being strengthened.Furthermore, if we take a closer look at the squad itself, yes, its currently weaker than it was at the end of last season following the departures of players such as Mayenda and Cirkin, but how many players do we really need for the starting XI?I would argue its probably only one a high-quality right winger.Theres an argument that we also need a high-quality left centre-back or left-back to rotate with Reinildo and Alderete, but what sort of fees would need to be spent to improve on the likes of Robin Roefs, Brian Brobbey, Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki? Not fees, I imagine, were able to spend currently.Were primarily looking to build squad depth. Thats a harder sell to potential signings, but it also means value for money is important. You dont want to overpay for a player who sits on the bench for 75% of the season.Additionally, we only have two games to play before the transfer window shuts and, from our current squad, we could easily field a starting XI capable of taking six points from those matches.Obviously, this picture will change if there are any more departures but, right now, patience and calm heads are paramount.Keep the faith!Kind regards,John BagnallEditors note [Martin]: Thanks for the email John. For months, everyone knew that LeBron James faced a big decision this summer in free agency.
