Michigan State's hockey program is accustomed to losing talent to the NHL ranks, but maybe not as early as its latest signee.Nikita Klepov, a member of the 2026 freshman class, signed his entry level contract with the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. That means he is ineligible to play in college, a decision made just one day after Michigan State announced the high-scoring winger was part of its 26-member 2026-27 roster.Anaheim drafted Klepov 15th overall at the NHL Draft in Buffalo on June 26. A month later, the American-Russian dual citizen signed a three-year contract carrying a $1,075,000 cap hit. His agent is Dan Milstein, the same agent as a number of Russian and Belarussian players including Tampa Bay star Nikita Kucherov and former Spartans defenseman Artyom Levshunov, who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks.Klepov was expected to be a major scoring threat for Michigan State, coming off an OHL-leading 97-point season that made him the league's Rookie of the Year and a member of the Canadian Hockey League's all-rookie team.Without Klepov in the mix, Michigan State still brings in a talented freshman class. It will also still break the NCAA record for first round picks on an NHL roster. NEW YORK New York Mets slugger Juan Soto was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday because of a left calf strain.Soto walked twice against Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki in Fridays 4-2 loss before being replaced by Jorge Polanco in the sixth inning with the score tied at 1. He appeared to experience discomfort while running to second base on Bo Bichettes double-play grounder in the second inning.Soto is hitting .293 with 21 homers and 52 RBIs in 84 games this season. He missed 15 games from April 3-21 with a right calf strain, and the Mets went 3-12 without him.Soto sat out Wednesdays 4-3 loss at Milwaukee but was back in the lineup Friday after the Mets had a day off.The lone All-Star for the Mets this year, Soto exited the teams first game after the break in the eighth inning on July 16 at Philadelphia. New York was off the following day, and he returned to the lineup as the designated hitter on Saturday and Sunday against the Phillies. He played left field Monday in Milwaukee and was the DH on Tuesday.To replace Soto, the Mets called up infielder/outfielder Eric Wagaman from Triple-A Syracuse. Wagaman is hitting .162 with two homers and four RBIs in 21 games this season.

His skill set has drawn comparisons to former All-Pro defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, largely because of their similar ability to line up in different areas of the defense and make an impact wherever they are needed. Like Mathieu, Scott is not a player who needs to be confined to one traditional position.Throughout his college career, Scott showed the ability to play outside corner, cover from the slot, and contribute closer to the line of scrimmage.
