Farming instilled discipline in fit-again Barber
Ellen Barber will compete alongside Jade O'Dowda for England in the heptathlon [Getty Images]Growing up on a farm surrounded by cows and horses might not be a common pathway into elite sport but heptathlete Ellen Barber credits her upbringing with pushing her to the top and making a Commonwealth Games debut. The 28-year-oldis from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, where her family has operated the world's oldest cheddar cheese farm since 1883.Barber is also the granddaughter of late horse racing owner Paul Barber and spent many of her formative years at his stables on the other side of Ditcheat, which for the past 30 years have been the home of renowned trainer Paul Nicholls."I feel all those values are instilled into you when you're growing up - discipline, getting up every day - farming, you have no days off because cows don't wait around for you," Barber told BBC Radio Somerset. "And then with Paul's yard being there, it's a world class performance centre. "Growing up, seeing that day in, day out, a relentless pursuit of excellence of just trying to be the best and at the top - without me even realising it you're getting characteristics from that."Barber's family has a long working relationship with horse racing trainer Paul Nicholls [BBC]The Barber-Nicholls partnership has been one of the most successful in British horse racing, with the duo twice winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup with See More Business in 1999 and Denman in 2008. Barber has also competed as a jockey, one of several sports she tried at an early age."I did loads of sports at school. I did cricket, rugby, hockey, I did a lot of riding and my parents never wanted me to go into just one sport, they wanted to keep my options open," she said.Nicholls hopes No Drama This End follows Denman's routeJohnson-Thompson and Asher-Smith out of CommonwealthsHowever, around the age 15 athletics became the focus when Barber's teacher signed her up for a regional championships and in 2016 she won the English Schools' title for heptathlon."I really like the challenge of seven events because I naturally pick things up quite quickly," she said. "Trying to master all seven events is hard and I've liked that challenge of getting good. I've slowly plugged away and got better."If I told myself 10 years ago, that I would go to the Commonwealth Games or the Indoor Championships, I would have been like, 'what?' So, yeah, it's crazy."Fear of 'career-ending' injuryBarber's route to Glasgow has not been straightforward. Four years ago she was out with a major injury caused by three stress fractures in her tibia and another fracture in her foot. Barber eventually underwent surgery, missed the 2022 Commonwealth Games and has had to fight to prove her fitness."I thought it was going to be career-ending," Barber said."A lot of the doctors as well didn't think it was going to be any good. Especially coming back in the heptathlon when you've got seven events that you've got to get back healthy for," she said.Barber still attended the Birmingham Games four years ago, albeit as a fan, and sitting in the stand gave her added motivation to return. "I remember stepping in and thinking this is going to be the last time I will be watching," she said. "The next four years I'm going to make it and be there and come back and give it my all and put in everything that I've got to come. Luckily it's all paid off."Barber represented England at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland in March [Getty Images]Barber has had to be patient and assiduous in regaining her best form.Last July, she won gold at the UK Athletics Championships - a title she also won in 2018 - and in May set a new personal best in the heptathlon at the Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis, Austria. She found out she had earned a place in the 84-person England athletics squad for the Games via a phone call from head of combined events Darren Ritchie.Barber will compete against team-mate Jade O'Dowda, who won bronze in 2022, with two-time champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson ruled out by injury. The heptathlon starts on Tuesday when day one includes the 100m hurdles, followed by the high jump, shot put and 200m.The following day, Barber will participate in the long jump, javelin, and finish with the 800m."To get there I've got to be very proud of myself," she said.

‘Liverpool are aware…’ – Sky reporter issues Bradley Barcola update as ‘opening bid’ expected
Liverpool are aware Sky reporter issues Bradley Barcola update as opening bid expectedLiverpool could soon submit an opening offer for Bradley Barcola and are expected to throw everything at trying to sign the Paris Saint-Germain forward.Thats according to one Sky Sports reporter over the past 24 hours, with the French attacker continuing to be a priority transfer target for the Reds this summer.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ONAPPLE&GOOGLE PLAYThe speculation surrounding the 23-year-old took a significant twist on Sunday amid reports (via The Standard) that he wont sign a new contract at the Parc des Princes and is now expected to leave the European champions.Liverpool could submit opening bid for Barcola soonLate on Sunday night, Florian Plettenberg took to X to share his latest information on Liverpools pursuit of Barcola, which seemingly looks set to ramp up over the coming days.He posted:Liverpool are now set to do everything they can to sign Bradley Barcola before Deadline Day. Liverpool are aware of the players personal terms and do not expect any issues on that front if a transfer agreement with PSG can be reached.More talks are scheduled for Monday. Liverpool are considering submitting an opening bid soon. Barcola is open to leaving PSG this summer.Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as apreferred source on Googleto your favourites list for news you can trustHow high will Liverpool be prepared to go for Barcola? The amount of any forthcoming transfer offer from Anfield will be fascinating to see, and our guess is that itd be instantly rejected by the Parisians. As reported by Ben Jacobs on Sunday (via X), PSG value Barcola at a whopping 170m (145.2m), although the Reds would look to do a deal for less, with the players representatives also set to push for an agreement below that figure.Liverpool could certainly do with bringing in a winger of the 23-year-olds proven quality, but at what point does it become unfeasible to proceed with a move for the France international?Anfield chiefs must be mindful of not apportioning so much of the transfer budget on the PSG star that theres precious little left over for other incoming business, with the need for at least one defender heightened by the injury to Joe Gomez in the weekend win over Sunderland. We expect the Merseyside hierarchy to throw everything theyve got at trying to secure a deal for Barcola, although it could take a few attempt before (or if) an agreement is reached, with there likely to be a notable discrepancy between the value of an opening bid and the Champions League holders asking price.

'Wapis nahi aane dega': Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's form triggers fresh debate over Sanju Samson's India return
NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan suggests that Vaibhav Sooryavanshis impressive performances could make it difficult for anyone, including Sanju Samson, to reclaim his place in Indias T20I side. The young batter continued his fine form with a composed 81-run innings in the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe on July 26, showing both maturity and power on a challenging Harare pitch. He played some eye-catching shots, including a straight drive off a yorker from Brad Evans and a massive 102-metre six against Sikandar Raza.Praising the youngster, Pathan wrote, Jiski vhi jagah lega ye bachha use wapis nahi aane degaHow Special this Vaibhav Suryavanshi is??" (Whoever's place this kid takes, he won't let them come back. How special is this Vaibhav Suryavanshi?) IrfanPathan (@IrfanPathan) His comments have added to the debate over whether Sooryavanshi has moved ahead of Samson in Indias T20 plans.Samson started as Indias first-choice opener during the Ireland T20Is but managed only low scores, leading to Sooryavanshi getting opportunities in the England series. Although the youngster couldnt produce big knocks consistently in that series and Samson returned for the fifth T20I, neither change helped India avoid a whitewash.Selection battle aheadSamson was then left out of the Zimbabwe T20I series, while Sooryavanshi grabbed his chance with another impressive innings. With Indias next T20 assignment set to be the Asian Games, the competition for the opening spot between Samson and Sooryavanshi is expected to remain a major talking point. At the same time, Abhishek Sharmas place at the top has also come under scrutiny after a poor run of scores. The opener has managed just 2, 8, 1, 3, 16 and 10 in his last six T20I innings, raising fresh questions over Indias preferred opening combination.
