MORE: WWE SummerSlam 2026 Night 1 results: Randy Orton returns; Femi defeats LesnarFull Match CardNo. 1 Contenders Match for WWE Championship: Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor vs. Gunther vs. Kevin OwensWinner: Kevin OwensWhat a way to start the night, as SmackDown GM Nick Aldis announced to add Gunther and a returning Kevin Owens match to turn this one-on-one between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor into a fatal four-way match.Owens kicked off the match, hitting every man in his way, including long-time best friend Sami Zayn. In fact, during the closing stages of the match, itd be Zayn who appeared to be closing in on a win until Owens landed a super kick, allowing the returning star to hit his signature stunner on his friend and land a pin for the win. Now Kevin Owens has a date with CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship, a belt that has eluded him throughout his career, and also reignites an old rivalry with the champion. United States Championship Match: Trick Williams (c) vs. Baron CorbinWinner: Baron CorbinThis might have been a swing and miss from Triple H and the rest of creative, as Baron Corbin, who recently returned to SmackDown following a brief hiatus from WWE, would take down the red-hot Trick Williams for the United States title. Both men would exchange an array of blows. At the same time, Williams sidekick, Lil Yachty, also had to involve himself in some fashion until Corbin would duck a kick heading the way that would send the rapper through a table, taking him out of the equation. While the referee attended to Yachty, Corbin hit Williams with the U.S. Championship to land the coveted End of Days finisher, ultimately spelling defeat for the former champion, ending his reign after 100+ days. Interim WWE Womens Championship Ladder Match: Charlotte Flair vs. Lash Legend vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Chelsea Green vs. Jade Cargill Winner: Chelsea GreenOnce again, the women of the WWE roster put together one of the best matches of the night, filled with action, highlight spots, and concluded with Chelsea Green winning her very first WWE Womens Championship as the Minnesota crowd chanted her name. Both Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton wowed the crowd with their athleticism, showcasing that the future of the womens division is in very good hands. Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill allowed their current feud to interfere with the title chase, even with Cargills running mates B-Fab and Michin coming into the fray to attack the competitors of the match. In the end, while all the women in the ring were laid out, itd be Chelsea Green to rise up from being stuck in the ladder to win the title and set up a future bout with Rhea Ripley when she returns from injury. Human Monies on a Pole Match: Danhausen vs. Dominik MysterioWinner: DanhausenA legitimate comic relief for the evening, Danhausen and Dominik Mysterio faced off in the first-ever Human Monies on a Pole match featuring brief wrestling between the two wrestlers before interferences from the Minihausens and JD McDonaugh caused chaos. Mysterio appeared to have the match won after Judgment Day stablemate McDonaugh took out Danhausen and several of his minions, but in the mix of those Minihausens was legendary luchador El Torito, aka Toritohausen for the night, who landed a flurry of moves to help take out the AAA Mega Champion. Danhausen then secured his climb to the top of the pole, where hed secure a bag of human monies that he then shared with the crowd upon his exit. Intercontinental Championship Match: Penta (c) vs. Chad GableWinner: Chad GableChecking off a major milestone in front of his home crowd and putting on the potential match of the night, Chad Gable defeated Penta via submission to capture his first-ever singles title in his WWE career. In one of the best payoffs in recent memory for the WWE, Gables story to the Intercontinental Championship is nothing less than gritty, as this was his sure-fire thank you from the company for the amazing work he did with his version of the Grande Americano character. Embraced by Penta, his family, and the Minnesota crowd after the match, Gable was brought to tears, acknowledging their support and the hard work he put in to get to this position. World Heavyweight Championship Match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Seth RollinsWinner: Roman ReignsTalk about an all-timer, truly. The work Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins put into this match could bring a fan to tears. From heavy punches, Shield callbacks, and an exchange of finishing moves, this bout between two of WWEs best was a true five-star classic. The storytelling between the two dates back almost a decade, with Michael Cole on commentary illustrating it all during one of SummerSlams best main events in WWE history. Without the Bloodline and shoving a chair to the side while Rollins back was turned, Reigns pointed to the center of the ring and let his former Shield partner know that he wanted to settle their feud once and for all without anything in between them. Delivering three consecutive spears to Rollins, the OTC Roman Reigns finally put down his long-time rival for a three-count when all the chips were on the table, retaining the World Heavyweight Championship. At the end of the match, Reigns and Rollins reunited with a fist bump in the middle of the ring, signaling a sign of respect after their decade-long feud came to an end. Bam Adebayo gets honest about why he's not too worried about the Heat's lack of shooting
Bam Adebayo gets honest about why he's not too worried about the Heat's lack of shooting originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo was a major move for the Miami Heat. With that move, he and Bam Adebayo form a fearsome partnership that could be the best in the league. However, it does pose a problem because they might not be as dynamic on offense as many duos.Defensively, there should not be any problem with Adebayo and Antetokounmpo. Unfortunately, that is only half the game, so offensively, they might have some limits because they do not have the best perimeter shooting.Bam Adebayo sees no problem with the Heat's lack of shootingIt is fair to have high expectations for the Heat now because they have an elite duo in the frontcourt. Pat Riley and the Heat's front office did have to send a significant package to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Giannis, so the team is lacking depth.Trading away the likes of Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kel'el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis was a big investment for Miami. It was an understandable decision, but it does hamper their offense because those players were big-time contributors for head coach Erik Spoelstra.MORE:Bobby Portis believes the Heat have the NBA's best frontcourt after he and Giannis Antetokounmpo's arrivalDespite all the potential issues that have popped up because of the trade, it seems Adebayo is not worried. He believes in himself, Giannis, and the rest of the Heat organization. That is a healthy mindset to have, especially with a lot of critics popping up."We're ready to get to work. The goal is to win a championship. We have a like mindset; those conversations are really about winning.Well figure it out. We dont listen to the outside noise too much. Weve done a lot more with less in our past years, so well figure it out," Adebayo said about how the Heat can get past the potential issues in the 2026-27 season. It will be challenging to stand out in the Eastern Conference after all the big moves and impending returns. The Heat have not had the best regular season campaigns for a while, so getting a two-time MVP like Giannis can be the key to securing a higher seed in the Playoffs, and in the postseason, they could go on a big run.More NBA news:Giannis Antetokounmpo might be a wonky fit with the Heat, according to Josh SmithThe Heat had a chance to sign LeBron James until the 76ers traded for Jaylen BrownThe trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo is not the immediate solution that the Heat needGiannis Antetokounmpo reacts to the Bucks fans celebrating his time in MilwaukeeHow Goran Dragic made an impact on Giannis Antetokounmpo's career that most people did not know about

Caitlin Clark addresses Sophie Cunningham controversy for first time; now the media has a choice
Credit: Indiana Fever via YouTubeJust last weekend, Indiana Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark was laughing and smiling with Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, better known as StudBudz, on their 72-hour Twitch stream for WNBA All-Star Weekend.Clark, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick, surprised them with pairs of the Caitlin 1s, her forthcoming debut Nike signature sneaker. Hiedeman and Williams thanked her profusely and hugged her. Williams wore the purple Caitlin 1s in the All-Star Game, becoming the second-ever athlete to play in the shoe. Williams affectionately nicknamed Clark The President, likely to signify her overwhelming influence.I made a call to the President, and yall see what happened, Williams said on the stream.CAITLIN GIFTED THE STUDBUDZ THE CAITLIN 1sWe love the PresidentCaitlin: Courtneys gonna make shots from 40 tonight. pic.twitter.com/yTw3HTiuXC correlation (@nosyone4) July 25, 2026The week after All-Star Weekend, however, the Fever sent all calls for the President straight to voicemail.ESPNs Hallie Grossman published the Sophie Cunningham profile heard round the world on July 21. In it, the Fever guard expressed her opinion about transgender athletes having a right to participate in sports.I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And Im like, I never once said that,' Cunningham said. I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldnt have to go against biological men.Im very much in the middle, Cunningham added of her political persuasion. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And thats all Ive ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume.Intended or otherwise, Cunninghams comments set off a media firestorm and served as a Bat-Signal to the far-right. Organizations against transgender women in womens sports organized Support Sophie Cunningham rallies at Fever games in Seattle, Portland, and Minnesota. Cunningham mostly wasnt pressed to answer for what she started, but when she was, she doubled down. Clark was shielded from the media entirely.Clark finally took the podium alongside head coach Stephanie White and fellow All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell after the Fevers loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, Aug. 2.Predictably, the postgame presser opened with this question about how Clark and her teammates have navigated the pre-game demonstrations and outside noise this week.I think, for us, its not really a discussion we really have in our locker room, Clark said. I think its for leagues and the governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball. Thats what we talk about and how we can get wins, and, obviously, we didnt do that tonight.A visibly exasperated Clark interrupted a follow-up question by saying, I just answered for you.Ideally, as a face of the WNBA and leader of the Fever, Clark would have been front and center leading vocally as naturally as she does on the floor, like Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has done.I would encourage anyone to go and listen to Cheryl Reeves comments. Incredibly thoughtful. The ESPN on ABC broadcast addresses Cheryl Reeves comments on transgender athletes, her Trans Kids Belong shirt, and meeting with Sophie Cunningham.pic.twitter.com/83YKH6X9HN Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) August 2, 2026I have been among the chorus begging Clark for bolder action and more definitive statements, especially when her Black, LGBTQ+ peers dont have the privilege of sitting out such conversations. But to be fair to her, Clark has used her voice multiple times over the past two years. On June 13, 2024, one month into her rookie year, Clark offered a strong statement against the influx of hate, harassment, misogyny, and racial abuse.I think its disappointing, Clark said in response to a question from James Boyd ofThe Athletic. Everybody in our world demands the same amount of respect. The women in our league deserve the same amount of respect. People should not be using my name to push those agendas. Its disappointing. Its not acceptable. This league is a league I grew up admiring and wanting to be a part of, she continued. Some of the women in this league were my biggest idols and role models growing up and helped me wanting to achieve this moment right here that I get to play in every single night. Just treating every single woman in this league with the same amount of respect, I think, is just a basic human thing that everybody should do.And one month ago, in the aftermath of Alyssa Thomas controversial play on her that sparked vitriolic aftermath, Clark opened her media availability with a five-minute monologue that hit the same beats:Lengthy opening statement from Caitlin Clark: pic.twitter.com/fLlwYmvFLy Tony East (@TonyREast) July 3, 2026On Sunday, Clark kept her response short, but her demeanor said so much more.Clark looked drained and sounded monotone. How many times can she say the same thing, only for antagonists to make her their mascot anyway? It was the image of a 24-year-old with the world at her fingertips who doesnt feel comfortable taking hold of anything.Who we saw Sunday stood in glaring contrast to the playful, sarcastic Clark weve seen at other press conferences this season, like when she teased her signature shoe or shrugged off all her technical fouls. It was almost a different person than the one who giddily crashed the StudBudzs stream. There is the perception of Caitlin Clark and the reality of Caitlin Clark the perception of the WNBA and the reality of the WNBA and the gulf is widening by the day, as Jemele Hill broke down with Awful Announcings Brandon Contes last week.Being there with the All-Stars, among the players, if I would have told you what the headlines were about Caitlin Clark and the league in general, you would have sworn they couldnt possibly be talking about the same league, Hill said. You saw the relationships that she has. You saw up close, no, this league does not hate her.The StudBudz do it through Twitch. Aja Wilson never advertises it, but she has an annual Pride Cake tradition for her teammates. Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers havent hesitated to use their platforms to surface real-life issues, though Reese has her own difficulties with how shes been portrayed and how her words are twisted. Maya Moore, Clarks childhood idol, left basketball in her prime to dedicate her life to activism. Advocacy and solidarity take different forms, especially in the WNBA.Perhaps Clark hasnt figured out hers yet, or perhaps this is it.Dating back to her star turn at Iowa, Clark has consistently shown the ways in which she is comfortable wielding her fame and in what contexts shes comfortable opening up to the media. Would a performative pounding of the press conference table be better, if it wasnt authentic to Clark? At what point does demanding Clark to be someone she isnt over and over again reflect the definition of insanity?Of late, Clark has asserted repeatedly, You dont know me. And its true, even if parasocial relationships claim otherwise. We have no idea what Clark does or says privately to with her peers. We only know what she chooses to share.Clark will never make everyone happy, whether she stays silent or speaks, and the choice is ultimately hers on how much she cares to use her voice regardless of that burden. The media has a choice now, too: cover Clark as she is or cover her as it wants her to be. The former might get us closer to the truth, while the latter all but guarantees this toxic cycle continues. The post Caitlin Clark addresses Sophie Cunningham controversy for first time; now the media has a choice appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Coward: Caitlin Clark sparks outrage for not backing Sophie Cunninghams trans comments
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) yells to Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) on Monday, June 22, 2026, during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Indiana Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury, 86-77.Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has found her niche off the bench this season, has become a household name. Interestingly, Cunninghams rapid rise is more about her views off the court than it is about her play on it.In a July 21 ESPN profile, Cunningham commented on what she felt was necessary to protect womens sports.I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And Im like, I never once said that, she toldthe Worldwide Leader after being asked about the MAGA Barbie nickname some fans have given her.I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldnt have to go against biological men.Local media approached Cunningham about the comments a few days later and she doubled down.I said what I said. I think its kind of common sense, she said. And I think Ill always believe in that. I think its really important to protect children, and thats little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said. Its for the leagues and governing bodiesCunninghams stance has turned into a frenzied debate, with people from all corners of sports media, the White House, and multiple head coachesacross the WNBA weighing in. Fever star Caitlin Clark has avoided the media since the controversy began, until her post-game session following Sundays defeat to the Minnesota Lynx, when she was curt in addressing the situation. Its for the leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions. My focus is on basketball Clark said.Caitlin Clark refused to back Sophie Cunningham:Its for the leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions. My focus is on basketball. pic.twitter.com/R7HfzZIKwC BrickCenter (@BrickCenter_) August 3, 2026Shes not the hero we thought she was. Some of Cunninghams staunchest supporters on social media were furious that Clark didnt say anything in support of her teammate.Sophie backs you all day everyday and you cant hold that same respect with common sense? Hmmmmm. Dont like this look, one fan posted on X.Coward. Everyones so scared to fight back I refuse to participate in their fairytales. Theres males and females. Point blank, someone else added.Caitlin Clark bailed on the truth a long time ago. Shes not the hero we thought she was, another fan added.Considering the Fever lost 108-100 to Minnesota on Sunday, its probably for the best that Clark is keeping the focus on basketball, and with Cunningham only scoring three points in the contest, she may want to refocus on whats happening on teh court as well. The post Coward: Caitlin Clark sparks outrage for not backing Sophie Cunninghams trans comments appeared first on The Comeback: Todays Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

Cubs acquire Kevin Gausman from Blue Jays
You have been waiting for the Cubs to acquire a starting pitcher, and Sunday night, they have done so (Bluesky link):Per Joshs pre-deadline ranking of Cubs prospects, those are the No. 13 (Ty Southisene) and No. 19 (Brett Bateman) prospects in the Cubs organization. MLB Pipeline ranks them 13th and 21st, respectively. This is, I believe, a fair deal for a 35-year-old pitcher who is a pending free agent, so this is a rental. The Cubs would be on the hook for slightly more than $7 million of Gausmans $23 million deal for this year. (This might also account for some of the cash considerations in the Jameson Taillon deal with the Jays announced earlier today.)Gausman has a 4.38 ERA and 1.288 WHIP in 23 starts this year and 127.1 innings. His K rate and walk rate are about the same as theyve been the last couple of years, and with 50 games remaining, that means likely 10 starts in a Cubs uniform for him.His last start was Friday against the Cardinals and he allowed nine hits and one run in 5.2 innings. Interestingly enough, his first start for the Cubs could wind up being against his old team, as the Blue Jays will be playing a makeup game Thursday at Wrigley Field and its possible his opponent could be Taillon. The Cubs absolutely crushed Gausman June 19 at Wrigley, scoring seven runs in two innings, including a grand slam by Carson Kelly. Fortunately, he wont be facing the Cubs hitters anymore.Okay, its your turn.

Braves reportedly acquire SP Tyler Mahle from Giants, further boosting pitching depth
The Atlanta Braves are reportedly acquiring starting pitcher Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants for RHP Anthony Molina, per Robert Murray.Mahle, 31, has started 18 games for the Giants this season. He heads to Atlanta with a 3-9 record and a 5.13 ERA. The Braves wont be counting on him to become their No. 2 starter, but the veteran arm should be able to eat innings down the stretch of the season to give the franchise an extra option and his teammates some extra rest. Molina is a 24-year-old pitcher who has made only three appearances for the Braves this season. He saw a lot of work with the Colorado Rockies in his debut season in 2024. That year, he made 35 appearances but finished with a 1-1 record and a 6.79 ERA. This is the second trade in as many nights that Atlanta has made for starting pitching depth. On Saturday night, the Braves picked up SP Bailey Falter and outfielder Lane Thomas from the Kansas City Royals. Atlanta was in the market for starting pitching ahead of the trade deadline due to the numerous injuries to the pitching staff. Most recently, Reynaldo Lopez was added to the 15-day IL with left knee inflammation. Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Strider are all also on the IL. The Braves were tied to Tarik Skubal, but the former Detroit Tigers ace was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. Atlanta was also linked to Tigers SP Casey Mize and could still make a push to acquire him ahead of Mondays deadline.
