ESPN makes bold Caitlin Clark, Fever championship prediction after All-Star break
ESPN makes bold Caitlin Clark, Fever championship prediction after All-Star break originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.ESPNs Basketball Power Index gives Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever the best chance of any WNBA team to win the 2026 championship. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever may sit fifth in the WNBA standings, but one prominent projection believes they are the team everyone else should be chasing.ESPN Analytics released its updated championship probabilities following the All-Star break, and Indiana landed in the top spot. The Fever were given a league-best 24.1% chance to win the 2026 WNBA championship. The reigning champion Las Vegas Aces followed closely at 22.6%, while the first-place Minnesota Lynx ranked third at 15.5%.That projection immediately caused a stir because Indiana entered the break at 17-10, trailing four teams in the standings. The Fever have not yet been the leagues most consistent team, but ESPNs model sees several reasons to believe Clark and her teammates could be the most dangerous group in the playoffs.Fevers historic offense drives ESPN projectionIndiana has developed into the WNBAs most explosive offensive team. The Fever lead the league with a 116.1 offensive rating, powered by an imposing trio of Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston.Crunch time in the W!Entering the second half, ESPN Analytics has the league chasing the highest scoring team in Indiana and the reigning champs Las Vegas; giving those two the best chances to win the title this season pic.twitter.com/63iyAGvUBp ESPN Insights (@ESPNInsights) July 26, 2026Clark entered the All-Star break averaging 21.0 points and 7.9 assists per game. She ranks among the league leaders in both categories and remains the engine of Indianas high-powered attack. Mitchell has been even more productive as a scorer, averaging 23.3 points per game. She provided another reminder of her offensive ability by scoring a game-high 28 points during Saturdays WNBA All-Star Game in Chicago.Boston has also taken an important step forward. The former No. 1 overall pick is averaging 17.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.2 blocks while anchoring Indiana in the paint. Her improved outside shooting has made an already difficult offense even harder to defend. Opponents must account for Clarks exceptional range, Mitchells quickness and Bostons ability to score inside or step away from the basket. The Fevers defense remains a concern. Indiana ranks ninth with a 109.0 defensive rating, but its offensive firepower gives the team a chance to overcome difficult stretches at the other end.MORE:Caitlin Clark reveals why she turned down WNBA All-Stars shoe requestsWhy Fever rank ahead of Lynx, Aces and WingsESPNs Basketball Power Index evaluates more than a teams win-loss record. The model accounts for game-by-game efficiency, strength of schedule, pace, rest, game location and preseason expectations. That helps explain why Indiana can rank first in championship probability despite being fifth in the standings. The projection sparked plenty of debate, particularly because the Lynx entered the break with a league-best 22-6 record. The Golden State Valkyries, Aces and Dallas Wings also remained ahead of the Fever. Fans went crazy over ESPNs prediction in the comments, with some pointing to Indianas unmatched offensive ceiling and others questioning how the Fever could be favored over teams with stronger records.Indianas recent form strengthens the models case. The Fever have won seven of their last 10 games, including three consecutive victories entering the break. They also reached the semifinals last season and pushed the eventual champion Aces to a deciding fifth game without a healthy Clark available for the postseason. With Clark back in the lineup, expectations have understandably climbed. Indiana still has plenty to prove during the second half, particularly on defense. However, ESPNs projection makes one thing clear: The Fever are no longer viewed as an emerging team simply hoping to make noise. They are viewed as the WNBA championship favorite.More WNBA news:Paige Bueckers reveals why Fever star is WNBAs hardest player to guardWNBA All-Star ticket prices explode as last-minute deals disappear in ChicagoSophie Cunningham points out potential problem with LeBron James 76ers superteamAliyah Boston sends heartfelt message after WNBA guard suffers season-ending injury

Albion's Whitwell open to loan move
West Bromwich Albion midfielder Harry Whitwell says he is open to being loaned out this season to gain more experience. The 20-year-old spent the first half of the 2025-26 campaign with National League side Forest Green Rovers, where he made 26 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals. But he was recalled by Albion in January to bolster the squad and played 88 minutes across four appearances in the Championship and FA Cup.Whitwell scored for West Brom in a 4-1 pre-season friendly win at League Two side Shrewsbury Town on Saturday and said his aim is to "play more men's football"."I think [my goal] is to get more matches in the league, whether that's with West Brom or if I have to go on loan, that will be discussed," he told BBC Radio WM."I had a taste of it at Forest Green last season and I loved it. I think if I was to go out on loan, the next step would be to try and get into the EFL."Whitwell also said he has "really enjoyed" being involved with the Baggies in pre-season and that it can only help improve his game "technically and physically"."I feel like I'm trying to give myself the best foot forward to the season, wherever that may lead," Whitwell added."I'm just trying to grab the opportunity they're giving me and see what happens."Explore more West Bromwich Albion content on BBC Sounds

Report – Why Ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong have travelled to England with Barcelona
Report Why Ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong have travelled to England with BarcelonaFC Barcelona have travelled to St Georges Park today for a week-long pre-season training camp under Hansi Flick, with the squad set to remain in England until next Monday. The travelling party, announced by the club on Monday morning, includes 17 players from Bara Atletic and the academy. Among the squad are two of the clubs captains, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Frenkie de Jong, whose inclusion has attracted particular attention.Ter Stegens presence is notable because his proposed loan move to Ajax is close to being completed. The goalkeeper is not part of Flicks plans and, after recovering from the injury he suffered last season while on loan at Girona, has agreed to join the Dutch club.Loan agreement still awaiting final approvalTer Stegen began pre-season training with Barcelona two weeks ago. Shortly afterwards, Barcelona and Ajax reached an agreement over a loan deal under which the Catalan club will continue to pay around 90% of the goalkeepers salary.Flying to England. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)Although Ter Stegen accepted the move, the transfer has yet to be finalised because of unresolved tax-related matters. Barcelona have submitted a proposal to their captain in an attempt to resolve those issues, but a final agreement has not yet been reached. For that reason, the Catalans have decided that Ter Stegen will travel to England as a full member of the squad while he remains a Bara player, reports SPORT.He featured in the recent friendly against Europa and could also play during the training camp in Birmingham if Flick decides to use him.In addition, the German goalkeeper has also been helping fellow countryman Karim Adeyemi settle into life at the club following the wingers summer arrival. For now, Barcelona have not ruled out the possibility of the loan being completed during the week, which would see Ter Stegen leave the training camp before it concludes.De Jong travels while recoveringAnother surprise inclusion in the travelling squad is the injured De Jong.Recovery will be closely monitored. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)The Dutch midfielder finished the FIFA World Cup carrying a knee injury. Two weeks ago, at the start of Barcelonas pre-season preparations, he reported to the club for further medical examinations after continuing to experience discomfort.Last Friday, following several tests, Barcelona confirmed that De Jong had suffered a tear to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury expected to keep him out for several months. The midfielder has opted for conservative treatment rather than surgery against clubs suggestion. Barcelonas medical staff have decided he should travel with the squad to England so that the clubs doctors can monitor his recovery and rehabilitation on a daily basis throughout the training camp.
