In this series, we will be counting down the days until the season opener by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number.Today, we look at the first Heisman winner on the listUSC Heisman Trophy running back Marcus Allen.Position:Running backYears played at USC:1978-1981Career highlights:Allen did not start at running back for USC his first two years, because the Trojans had another Heisman winner in the backfield: the late, great Charles White. After winning a national championship as a freshman backup in 1978, Allen started at fullback in 1979.Following the graduation of White, Allen took over as USC's featured back in 1980. After rushing for more than 1,500 yards that season, he shattered the record book as a senior in 1981. That year, Allen became the first player in college football history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season, carrying the ball 403 times for an incredible 2,342 yards and 22 touchdowns. He was named a Unanimous All-American and won just about every award that he was eligible for, including the Heisman Trophy, becoming the fourth USC running back to take home the honor.Allen's retired jersey No. 33 hangs in the Peristyle at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.After USC:Allen did not have to move very far after graduating, as the newly-moved Los Angeles Raiders selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft. Right now, Pitts NIL budget is estimated to be 11th in the ACC, and 54th nationally. Its an improvement, but Pitt is still down the list financially.However, Greene did have some conditions for Capel to return. First, he had to fire two of his assistants, Tim OToole, and, most painfully, his brother, Jason. The Capels have always been close, so that had to hurt.He also insisted that Pitt modernize the program, including hiring a GM for the first time. Jay Kuntz was brought in to manage the business side of the program NIL strategy and roster construction, including transfer portal acquisitions. Greene also took into account that Pitt suffered some untimely injuries, but still competed and showed heart.So Capel has another chance to keep his job, but the ACC is likely to be much more competitive, and it wont be easy to move up.So what does Capel have to work with? He played in 22 games, averaging 5.9 minutes. He didnt really play enough to glean much insight, but maybe hes improved a lot over the summer.The heart of this team is in the portal pickups, and a lot of those guys have things to prove, which could work out well for the Panthers.Remarkably, six of Capels new players were with ACC teams previously. Powell was at UNC, Ndongo was at Georgia Tech, George was at Georgia Tech and Syracuse, Souare was also at Georgia Tech and Syracuse, Bethea started at Miami before transferring to Alabama, and Mighty was at BC before heading south to Mercer.Those guys ACC fans may be familiar with, and despite some hit-and-miss stretches, Ndongo in particular is a tremendous athlete.He started nearly every game for three seasons at Georgia Tech, other than when he was injured, and while former Yellow Jacket coach Damon Stoudamire kept trying to move him away from the basket, he does best inside. Last year, he averaged 11.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and a career best 2.4 assists. You can probably count on him starting.At BC, Mighty had trouble finding a role. He left, spent a redshirt year at Central Michigan, and then had a big year at Mercer, averaging 13.2 ppg and 10.6 rebounds. He had an 18 point, 25 rebound game against VMI, and youre probably saying, wellyeahVMI.But he never did anything like that at BC. Clearly, hes improved; the question is how much.He shot 64% last year, and at 240, solidly built. Well see how much better he is in his second tour of the ACC.Souare will primarily be a defender. His offense has never been formidable, but he has a 7-2 wingspan, and that poses problems for most people.Powell didnt necessarily have a huge impact at UNC last year, but he played reasonably well at West Virginia prior to that.Hes a solid three-point shooter, and thats something that Pitt can definitely use. At UNC last year, Powell averaged 4.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 16.3 minutes per game, appearing in 33 games. He might pair well with George, who historically is a good assist man.Speaking of George, he will reunite with his Yellow Jacket teammate Ndongo, with whom he seemed to have good chemistry. George averaged 10.9 ppg last year at Syracuse, 5.4 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. Weve always liked him. Bethea has never quite lived up to his 5-star high school reputation. At Miami of course, he got caught up in the drama of Jim Larranagas mid-season retirement, and his playing time suffered.Last year, he was at Alabama, and his minutes were more than halved, falling from 19 per game at Miami to 7.9 for the Crimson Tide. He might have made more money at Alabama, but otherwise, the transfer didnt work out very well.At Pitt, hell have a chance to play with less pressure, probably get more minutes, and have a chance to rebuild his reputation.Like Powell, hes a solid three-point shooter, and that should get him on the court.Hawkins was a solid combo guard for Gardner-Webb, and hes going to be a glue-guy for Pitt. He probably wont start ahead of George, Powell, or Bethea, but if things work out, Pitt wont lose a lot when he comes in, either. He could be very useful, assuming he can adjust to the ACC. Sumler averaged 18.9 ppg last year at Charleston Southern, along with 3.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds. He hit 48% overall and a highly impressive 39.6% from deep. Its a jump from Charleston Southern to the ACC, but if he can navigate it, Pitt may have a real asset.Diomande is said to be very athletic andcould play a role similar to what we saw from Dukes Dame Sarr last season. Hes bounced around a bit, but Pitt gives him a chance to build a more enduring role.At BYU last year, he averaged 1.9 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.7 steals in limited minutes.Rudovskii averaged 12.9 ppg for Bryant, and 4.6 rebounds. He also shot 35.1% from behind the three-point line, which was solid. He started all 31 games as a freshman, which is pretty good.Like Hawkins and Sumler, its really unclear how well hell do in the ACC, but well see.Gilbert comes from D-II Concord, and we have no idea what to expect. Hes said to shoot the three well, though, and before he was injured, was hitting 48% of his threes last season.As for the freshmen, Foster is a Top 40 recruit. Originally from Baltimore, Foster attended IMG Academy. He might really turn out. Like Foster, Jones attended IMG. Hes a Top 100 recruit who will have to move past several teammates to get playing time, but he might be good enough to do it.Pitt should be improved, but the baseline question, though, is simple: does Capel have enough to keep his job?Well, theres certainly a case for optimism.In general, Pitt has a nice roster now. They have solid big men, a nice fleet of guards, and some perimeter guys who can help Capels very physical defensive style.There are also a number of players who could excel from the bonusphere.On the potential downside, some of Capels transfers are taking a major step up, and that doesnt always work out, at least not immediately.And while Pitt should be improved, a lot of ACC teams are going to be better as well. For the Washington Commanders to bounce back from last season's disappointing 5-12 finish, they'll need every newcomer to make an impact. Fortunately, Washington has several newcomers in 2026. The Commanders added six players in the 2026 NFL Draft, led by No. 7 overall pick, linebacker Sonny Styles. Many analysts believed Styles would be drafted inside the top five, despite the fact that he doesn't play a premium position. That's how talented Styles is. He'll likely start immediately and never look back. Third-round pick, wide receiver Antonio Williams, is also expected to have a significant role. He could play outside opposite Terry McLaurin, or start in the slot. Regardless, he'll play significant snaps. But who are some of the other rookies who could open some eyes in training camp? Washington's rookies reported to Ashburn on Friday. The veterans report on Tuesday, with training camp to begin on Wednesday. We look at four rookies who could surprise in training camp. C Matt GulbinGulbin will be the only draft pick to make this list. Everyone expects fifth-round EDGE Joshua Josephs to make the roster, but he will serve as a backup. The same goes for running back Kaytron Allen, one of Washington's two sixth-round picks along with Gulbin. The 6-foot-4, 312-pound Gulbin began his career at Wake Forest, where he played guard. After transferring to Michigan State, he played center in 2025. With only veteran Nick Allegretti in front of him, Gulbin is in an excellent position to be Washington's primary backup center. He needs a good training camp to keep Washington from adding a veteran center. Gulbin's ability to play center and guard gives him an excellent chance of making the 53-man roster. WR Jaden BradleyThe 6-foot-3 undrafted rookie receiver from UNLV opened eyes during OTAs and in the minicamp. He offers size, as one of the tallest receivers on the roster. Bradley's height would seemingly make him an ideal outside receiver, but his skill set also allows him to play in the slot. Bradley earned praise from coaches after his performance this spring. There is a bit of a logjam at receiver, but some uncertainty at the bottom. While Bradley would have a difficult path to make the 53, it's quite possible. GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have proven they will keep the best players. Bradley has a shot. Don't be surprised if you hear his name often this summer. RB Robert Henry Jr.An undrafted rookie from UTSA, Henry is in a unique spot. The Commanders will presumably keep four running backs. Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White are the locks. You'd think Allen, a draft pick who offers power running, would also be a lock. That leaves one spot remaining. Ideally, Jeremy McNichols lands that final spot. The veteran does everything and is beloved by his coaches and teammates. It will be tough to unseat McNichols, but don't count Henry out. Like Bradley, he opened some eyes in the spring. But there was no tackling in the spring. He needs to take advantage of his opportunities in the preseason. Show what he can do carrying the ball, as well as catching the ball. Henry is one of the more intriguing players battling for a spot. K Drew StevensStevens is battling Jake Moody for the starting kicker position. Right now, it's probably 50/50. Both Moody and Stevens were great in the spring. He has a big leg, and you can almost count on receiving kicker updates every day of practice. Unless one of them struggles early, this battle is going until the end of August. Stevens has a big leg. He's also accurate. But keep in mind, Moody is a former third-round pick only three years ago. Sure, Moody had his struggles early, but Washington believes in him after his short stint last year. However, he didn't do enough to lock down the spot without competition, and the Commanders added one of college football's top kickers to push him or win the job. The Carolina Panthers have grown by leaps and bounds the last couple years under general manager Dan Morgan. However, there are still issues to addressand going into training camp, it doesn't take a pro scout to see what this team's most glaring roster hole is.According to Matt Okada at NFL.com, tight end is the team's greatest remaining need. If that's not enough to convince you, look no further than the new top-32 tight end rankings from Pro Football Focus.At the top of the list, you'll see San Francisco 49ers superstar George Kittle, followed by Trey McBride of the Arizona Cardinals, Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders and Sam LaPorta of the Detroit Lions. Colston Loveland of the Chicago Bears rounds out the top five.If you scroll down PFF's rankings, you won't find a single Panther in that top 32, which is wrapped up with Theo Johnson of the New York Giants. Last season, Johnson posted 45 catches, 528 receiving yards and five touchdowns as a pass catcher, a big improvement in his production over his rookie year.Those numbers also dwarf anything that the Panthers have received from their tight end room since Greg Olsen's peak from 2014 to 2016. That was a long time ago, and a near eternity in football years. In the meantime, Carolina has had dismal production from the room.
