Sign up to receive the newsletter in your inbox each Wednesday night.With less than two months to go until Utah opens the season against Idaho on Sept. 3, college football is drawing near.Morgan Scalley will open his first fall camp as head coach on Aug. 3, which starts the countdown to kickoff.While Utah brings back key pieces like quarterbacks Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin, running back Wayshawn Parker and linebacker Johnathan Hall, theres plenty of new faces on the hill as the Scalley era begins, including offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven.With fall camp beginning Aug. 3, heres a look at four of the most intriguing storylines to follow.Offensive line revampPerhaps the biggest storyline heading into fall camp is the development of the offensive line.This years group, coached by new offensive line coach Jordan Gross, has huge shoes to fill after the 2025 front, led by first-round NFL draft picks Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, powered the Utes to a school-record 3,462 rushing yards. Its unfair to expect the 2026 O-line to live up to the standard set by the 2025 contingent, but for the Utes to contend for a Big 12 title, the group will have to at least play average. All five starters from 2025 are gone, either to graduation or to the NFL.The good news? Utah has veterans that have been in the program for years, waiting their turn behind some talented players.Now they get their opportunity to silence the doubters.Their development both in the weight room and on the football field has been awesome, Scalley said. I love the story of those guys that have been waiting their turn, have been grinding and getting the work in and finally have that opportunity and now its time. So thats a group that Im very excited about. Keith Olson, Alex Harrison, Zereoue Williams, Solatoa Moeai and Roger Alderman each played at least 130 snaps last season, thanks to Utahs large margin of victory in its 11 wins.In Utahs 44-22 win over Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl, fans got a peek at the future as Olson, Moeai and Williams started and Alderman got extended run. Even without some of the stars, Utahs line played up to its 2025 standard, clearing the way for 225 rushing yards and four touchdowns and keeping Dampier clean for the most part.Harrison, Olson, Williams, Moeai and Montana State transfer Cedric Jefferson will be the favorites for starting jobs. Utah felt confident about its returning players and added just two from the transfer portal Ohio State center Isaiah Kema and Jefferson, who spent three seasons at Montana State and started all 16 games at right tackle for the national champions.Five-star freshman Kelvin Obot should also figure into things, at least as a rotation player. Dont sleep on Isaiah Garcia, the four-star from Corner Canyon now entering his sophomore season, either. After his season ended before it started last year due to an injury, Garcia impressed coaches in the spring and has an important fall camp on his hands. Alderman will also play a part in the rotation.As it stands, the offensive line is the biggest question mark on the offense, and they know it. That should fuel them, Scalley says.This is a group that all theyve heard since the season ended was, How are you going to replace these guys? How are you going to replace these guys? Scalley said.And if Im them, I have the same mindset. Im motivated. Its their opportunity to step up and the way things are looking, Im very, very pleased with where were at. We just want to continue to fly under the radar and show up on game day.A deep wide receiver roomWhen was the last time Utah fans had this much optimism about a wide receiver room?Of course, this years crop of receivers will need to prove it on the field, but the talent and depth looks to be there.Braden Pegan, who transferred from Utah State, should be this years WR1. The 6-foot-3 receiver had a breakout season in Logan last fall, snagging 60 receptions for 926 yards and five touchdowns. After starting his career at UCLA, Pegan is back at the Power Four level and has a real opportunity to take the lead as Dampiers favorite target. The race for that third option will be intriguing, with Ricky Johnson, Creed Whittemore and Larry Simmons each taking steps forward this spring.Then theres quarterback-turned-wide receiver Nate Johnson, who was the talk of spring camp, and returners Daidren Zipperer and Tobias Merriweather. On paper at least, Utahs wide receiver room looks pretty deep. How the depth chart shakes out will be interesting to follow.This wide receiver groups one of the best, if not the best, weve had at the University of Utah since Ive been there, which is a long time, Scalley said.The RB2 battleTheres no question about it Wayshawn Parker is Utahs undisputed RB1.The battle to get the second-most touches will be one to keep an eye on, though.The two candidates, San Jose State transfer Steve Chavez-Soto and returner Daniel Bray, have differing styles, so each could be used depending on the situation, and there may not be a true RB2 this season.Chavez-Soto, 6-foot and 205 pounds, could be used in short-yardage situations, similar to NaQuari Rogers last season. At San Jose State, Chavez-Soto rushed for 448 yards on 87 carries with seven touchdowns with a solid average of 3.85 yards after contact.While he added some muscle and weight to his frame hes now up to 180 pounds Bray fills the role of the speedy running back. In his freshman season, Bray impressed with 272 yards (6.8 yards per carry), including a 121-yard performance against BYU. After some spotty performances last season, Utahs defensive tackles room needs to be better this year.Gone are Utahs 2025 starters Jonah Leaea, Aliki Vimahi and Dallas Vakalahi making way for the next generation to step up.Karson Kaufusi and Pupu Sepulona both saw plenty of snaps in their freshman seasons, with Kaufusi totaling 13 tackles in 177 snaps and Sepulona tallying 13 in 137 snaps. Now, they could take on full-time starting roles.Utah brought in help from the transfer portal in San Jose States Jireh Moe, Wyomings Lucas Samsula and Tennessees Jamal Wallace. Moe, in particular, could challenge for a starting spot. Though hes just a sophomore like Kaufusi and Sepulona, Moe consistently drew praise during spring camp.The Utes dont have a ton of experience in a vital position on the defense. Change on 2025: +4.The Diamondbacks dropped the opener of The Most Important Series of the Season, losing 3-2 in ten innings to the Pirates. Merrill Kelly pitched well, and Max Kepler gave Arizona a 2-0 lead. But a throwing error by Kelly allowed a key Pittsburgh run, and Juan Morillo then gave up the tying score, which pushed the contest into extras. The Diamondbacks were unable to take advantage of a major Pirates gaffe, stranding the Manfred Man. A ball which was clanked off the glove of Ildemaro Vargas let the home team walk off, but the key stat tonight was the D-backs going just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position. And one of those hits didnt score a run either. But to focus on the positives. Merrill Kelly continued his resurgence. He finished June with an ERA above six (6.11, to be precise). But since the calendar turned to July, he has been much improved. Tonight, he allowed only an unearned run over 5.2 innings, on four hits all of which were singles. He walked one and struck out six. [That is still an area of concern. Through nineteen starts last year, he had 7 or more Ks eight times: he hasnt gone past six at all this year] He did hit a batter, Pirates rookie Esmerlyn Valdez wearing a pitch around the wrist area, and having to leave the game in obvious discomfort. Hopefully, theres no serious damage there. Through five innings, both Kelley and his opposite number confusingly, called M. Keller were basically cruising. Each side has managed to advance only one runner past first-base to that point. In the top of the second, Max Kepler led off with a single, advanced to third on a pair of outs, but was stranded there when Ildemaro Vargas grounded out. For the Pirates, they got a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, and the runner stole second before being left there. Kelly even got a pick-off, ending the fourth by nailing the pinch-runner who had come in to replace Valdez. Rather embarrassing for them, I imagine.Both pitchers were also being highly efficient. Through five innings, Keller had needed just 63 pitches, and Kelly less than a handful more at 67. I particularly enjoyed this strikeout by Kelly which ended the fifth inning. None of the six pitches in the zone, and zero contact by the batter on his three swings. However, my hopes of a quick recap foundered thereafter, as neither starting pitcher would make it through the sixth. Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo singled to lead off the top of the frame, though Gabriel Moreno would strike out looking, on a master-class of ABS by the Pirates catcher, which reversed two balls to strikes, by very narrow margins.[Conversely, Moreno was 0-for-2 in his challenges tonight. Though it is worth noting that the teams overall challenge rate when on defense is still 66.7%, significantly better than the MLB average of 58.1%.]View LinkKetel Marte then singled to load the bases. Hed probably be grateful if I left it at that, since this isnt exactly the type of hit which he will be reposting on his Instagram feed. A squibber off the end of the bat, it had an exit velocity of just 27.5 mph, but was perfectly placed to the right-hand side of the pitcher. The only two lower exit velo by a D-back this year were both bunts, by Jose Fernandez and Kepler. The last D-back with a hit which came slower off the bat? Pavin Smith (remember him?) on this hit in September 2024, a whopping 25.8 mph. [And yes: it says error on the video, but it was a hit in the box-score] Anyway, it loaded the bases and Kepler doubled in two runs (above).Unfortunately, that was all Arizona could do. Marte was easily out at home, trying to score on a contact play off the bat of Tyler Locklear, and Adrian Del Castillo grounded out. Still, a 2-0 lead to the D-backs. It didnt stay that way. Kelly allowed a one-out single, and then on his third pickoff throw over made a terrible throw which skidded up the line towards right field. The runner easily reached third, and scored on a subsequent single. A two-out walk ended Kellys night. Juan Morillo ended the threat, leaving two on base, and got three further outs in the seventh to keep Arizona ahead. Jonathan Loaisiga: not so much, with a pair of two-out doubles (around the ejection of the Pirates manager for arguing checked-swing calls) locking things back up at 2-2.The Arizona offense basically went overboard after Keplers hit. Ryan Waldschmidt had a one-out double in the sixth (and also had a very nice play at the wall), while Ildemaro Vargas singled in the ninth and moved to second on a balk. That was it. Even when gifted a runner at second in the tenth, the D-backs came up empty. Corbin Carroll had bad luck, lining into an out at 103 mph. Perdomo should have been the second out, but a throwing error put men on second and third with one out. However, Moreno took a called third strike and Kepler was unable to repeat his earlier magic. Though with three hits on the night, its hard to blame him specifically. It drops the D-backs back into a tie with the Pirates for the third wild-card. On the other hand, the Phillies lost to the Marlins, and the Cardinals are losing to the Cubs. So we arent the only team with NL wild-card aspirations to lose to a rival tonight. Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer made his return from the injured list and gave up a run and four hits in his 75 pitches on the mound, too. Scherzer, who won a World Series ring with the Nationals, received a pair of standing ovations from fans in Washington.

The Marlins finally won a game.Miami overcame two-run, ninth-inning deficit in the ninth on Monday to beat division-rival Philadelphia 8-7 and snap a 12-game losing streak the longest such stretch in franchise history.It was the Marlins' first win since beating Seattle at home on July 9 and ensured they would not suffer their fifth straight sweep.Everybody feels good," McCullough said. NBA insider Shams Charania recently revealed details of the package that was offered from Golden State to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo before he landed with the Miami Heat.
