India squad for Sri Lanka Tests: Ravindra Jadeja returns; Jasprit Bumrah picked with a rider
New Delhi: The India men's senior selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, starting August 15 in Galle. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja returns after being rested for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, while off-spinner Saransh Jain has earned his maiden call-up. Washington Sundar, meanwhile, remains unavailable for the first Test.Injury concerns persist, with both Sai Sudharsan and Jasprit Bumrah selected subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). Otherwise, the squad is largely on expected lines, with the core batting group retained. The pace attack features the familiar names of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Bumrah and Gurnoor Brar, who has retained his spot after an impressive showing against Sri Lanka A.In the spin department, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are expected to lead the attack alongside Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain. Suthar impressed on his debut against Afghanistan, while Jain has been preferred as the specialist off-spinner in Washington Sundar's absence. The 33-year-old has played 54 First-Class matches and has long been on the selectors' radar. They also handed him an India A opportunity on the recent tour of Sri Lanka, where he picked up six wickets and scored an unbeaten 70 in the final game.TimesofIndia.com has learnt that the selectors are unwilling to take any fitness-related risks for the series, and both Sudharsan and Bumrah will play only if they meet all the fitness benchmarks at the CoE. It is understood that Bumrah is expected to be fit for the opening Test in Galle, but even the slightest doubt over his fitness will ensure the think tank does not rush him back into the playing XI.India are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka early in the first week of August before beginning preparations for a four-day warm-up match in Colombo, starting on August 7. 132676800India's squad for the Tests against Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill (C), KL Rahul (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sai Sudharsan*, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Jasprit Bumrah*, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain.Note: Sai Sudharsan and Jasprit Bumrah's availability will be subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI CoE. Real Madrid fringe star happy with his current role, wants to stay at club
Real Madrid fringe star happy with his current role, wants to stay at clubReal Madrid signed talented Moroccan playmaker Brahim Diaz from Manchester City in 2019, and the youngster arrived with a lot of promise.Since then, Brahim has established himself as an important squad player for Los Blancos without ever exploding into the star he threatened to become. This summer, the 26-year-old had a very good tournament for Morocco at the World Cup, where he was at his creative best. Now, according to Abraham P. Romero, speaking on Ramon Alvarez de Mons channel, Brahim wants to remain at Real Madrid, even though he understands that he may not become one of the biggest stars in Jose Mourinhos squad. The Morocco international is comfortable with both his current role and his situation at the Bernabeu.Happy where he is at. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)His priority is to stay rather than pursue a move that might guarantee him greater prominence elsewhere. He is not considering offers at the moment.Brahim accepts the competitionBrahim still has a conversation pending with Mourinho, which should give the player greater clarity about how he fits into the coachs plans. However, his position appears clear before that meeting takes place. The 26-year-old is not demanding to become an automatic starter, nor does he expect the team to be built around him. That attitude could make him particularly valuable. Real Madrid need elite starters, but they also need players capable of entering matches, changing the rhythm and accepting rotation.A useful role should not be underestimatedBrahim featured in 42 matches for Real Madrid last season, recording two goals and five assists across 1,665 minutes. His versatility allows him to operate centrally or from wider areas, while his close control and direct running offer something different against tired or compact defences. Not considering an exit. (Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty Images)For Mourinho, the key question will be whether Brahim can provide enough consistency when opportunities arrive. If he is happy playing a secondary role, he needs to ensure that he can provide impact from the bench whenever needed.Brahim understands Real MadridBrahim being content with not being a star should not be seen as a lack of ambition. It shows that the 26-year-old believes staying at Real Madrid is more important than moving elsewhere to be the protagonist.Throughout his time at the club, the Moroccan has found a way to make himself useful, and there is no reason to wonder whether that changes under Mourinho. It remains to be seen what plans Mourinho has for the Morocco international and how his role is defined in the upcoming 2026-27 season.
