PGA Tour Unveils First Championship Series Events for 2028 Revamp
The PGA Tour has begun revealing which tournaments will become Championship Series events in 2028 when a new two-track model is implemented.First up for the PGA Tours top-tier Championship Series is the Travelers Championship, which has been played annually at TPC River Highlands just outside Hartford, Connecticut, each June, typically the week after the U.S. Open. Since 2023, the Travelers has been one of eight $20 million signature events on the PGA Tour. The announcement was made on Monday. In 2028, the PGA Tour Championship Series will comprise roughly 15 regular-season events, in addition to the four major championships, Players Championship, and playoff events. Purses for the PGA Tour-operated events (the non-majors) will be at least $20 million, with some tournaments like the Players and a revamped Tour Championship offering even more prize money. The second-tier Challenger Series will comprise at least 20 events, each offering much lower purses of at least $4 million. Both series will run from approximately February to August, and will include annual promotion and relegation between the circuits.Right now we have 47 events at the PGA Tourwell have 47 events going forward, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said when he unveiled the plans for the new scheduling model in June. That current model serves roughly 230 players. Well serve that amount of players, the same. We are just organized now in a more simple understanding competitively so our fans can understand it, our partners know what theyre getting as far as value. So we think weve just organized the same tour into a much more interesting and competitive system. The second confirmed Championship Series event will be sponsored by Sompo, a Japanese insurance and financial services firm, the PGA Tour announced on Tuesday. The events market has yet to be determined, though. In 2027, Sompo will back a full-field (non-signature) PGA Tour event at Silverado Resorts North Course in Napa, California, July 29 to Aug. 1effectively replacing the Rocket Classic in Detroit, which is leaving the PGA Tour schedule after this season. In 2028, the Sompo event will relocate to a new market as part of the transition to the Championship Series.Companies that sponsor Championship Series events will pay at least $30 million annually to financially back those top-tier tournamentsConfirmed Championship Series LineupRolapp said in June that there was already an initial set of 10 markets set to host Championship Series events during the 2028 season that would be revealed soon. So far, two tournaments have been confirmed for the Championship Series, in addition to the Players, four majors, and playoffs:Travelers ChampionshipSompo-backed event (official name to-be-determined)Players ChampionshipMastersPGA ChampionshipU.S. OpenOpen ChampionshipPGA Tour playoffsCurrently, there are three postseason events on the PGA Tour, but the exact number of playoff events in 2028 is yet to be determined. While the four majors are not operated by the PGA Tour, players will still earn points in those events for the new season-long Championship Series title race.Championship Contenders: Signature EventsWhile not yet officially confirmed, mostif not all ofthe remaining signature events from the 2026 PGA Tour season figure to be likely candidates for the Championship Series:AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AmGenesis Invitational (Los Angeles/hosted by Tiger Woods)Arnold Palmer Invitational (Orlando)RBC Heritage (Hilton Head, S.C.)Cadillac Championship (Miami)Truist Championship (Charlotte)Memorial Tournament (Columbus, Ohio/hosted by Jack Nicklaus)The Genesis Invitational has the cloudiest future among the current signature events. Its host course, Riviera Country Club, is hosting the mens and womens Olympic golf competitions in 2028 and the U.S. Open in 2031. Those events would make it more challengingif not impossiblefor the PGA Tour to also play at Riviera in those years. In February, Genesis extended its sponsorship of the PGA Tour event through 2030.Best of the RestTwo other non-signature events are widely seen within the golf industry as likely choices to move up to the Championship Series:The Sentry (Torrey Pines)WM Phoenix OpenSentry, the Wisconsin-based insurance company, previously sponsored the PGA Tours season-opener in Maui, which was a signature event from 2023 to 2025 before the PGA Tour canceled Januarys tournament and decided to exit Hawaii moving forward. Sentry is taking over naming rights for the PGA Tours annual stop at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California. The WM Phoenix Open is one of the rowdiest and most-attended tournaments on the PGA Tour each year.Rolapp has said tournaments in new markets the PGA Tour doesnt currently play in annually like New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Denver, and Seattle, could also host Championship Series Events.Champion or Challenger? No tournament to date has been confirmed as a Challengers Series event in 2028. Ten other events from the 2026 PGA Tour season have existing sponsorship deals running through 2028 or beyond. While a few could bump up to the Championship Series, the majority will land on the Challenger Series, assuming their sponsors stay on board in some form or fashion:The American Express (Palm Springs)Cognizant Classic in The Palm BeachesValspar Championship (Tampa)Texas Childrens Houston OpenValero Texas Open (San Antonio)Zurich Classic of New OrleansThe CJ Cup Byron Nelson (Dallas)John Deere Classic (Quad Cities)Genesis Scottish Open3M Open (Twin Cities)Threeother longstanding PGA Tour events figure to also remain part of the new ecosystem, but their sponsors have not yet announced extensions for 2028 or beyond:Charles Schwab Challenge (Dallas)RBC Canadian OpenWyndham Championship (Greensboro, N.C.)Its expected that one, but not both, of the PGA Tours Dallas-area events (the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and Charles Schwab Challenge) will receive Championship Series status.Rounding Out the ScheduleThis year, there were four opposite field eventstournaments with $4 million purses played during the same week as a more high-profile event:Puerto Rico OpenONEflight Myrtle Beach ClassicISCO Championship (Louisville)Corales Puntacana ChampionshipNone of those four sponsorship deals run beyond 2027, but each tournament would be a fitting Challenger Series event if their respective organizers wanted to be one.Beyond the February to August schedule for the Championship and Challenger Series, there will be a limited series of elevated international events during the fall as part of the PGA Tours strategic alliance with the DP World Tour. Additionally, a separate last chance fall series will include four to six events offering a limited number of spots onto the following years Championship Series for relegated players and those that did not earn promotion from the Challenger Series, among others.

How To Watch DR Congo's Stars After The 2026 World Cup
In its second FIFA World Cup appearance, DR Congo advanced out of Group K after earning a third-place finish with four points. In its opening match, DR Congo grabbed a point off Portugal, and clinched its spot in the knockout rounds with a win over Uzbekistan. DR Congo's 2026 World Cup came to an end in the round of 32, but it gave England a scare, jumping out to a 1-0 lead before two late goals from Harry Kane changed the narrative. Remarkably, DR Congo conceded just one goal in matches against Portugal and Colombia, as goalkeeper Lionel M'pasi made a name for himself and a defense featuring captain Chancel Mbemba and Aaron Wan-Bissaka stood strong. So what's next for DR Congo's stars after the 2026 World Cup? Lionel M'pasi didn't keep any clean sheets at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but he was still spectacular for DR Congo, specifically in the first half of its round of 32 game against England. He recorded five saves in that match, and also saved eight shots in a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the round of 32. Mpasi is entering his second season with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre. He's played all seven seasons of professional football in France, but last year was his first in the country's top league after a transfer. DR Congo's captain played all 90 minutes in each of DR Congo's four 2026 World Cup matches. Mbemba is entering his second season with French Ligue 1 side Lille. Wan-Bissaka has played every year of his professional career in the English Premier League. He started with Crystal Palace, before a big-time transfer to Manchester United, where he made three Champions League appearances, before playing two seasons for West Ham. But in 2025-26, his second season with West Ham, the club finished in the Premier League relegation zone, meaning Wan-Bissaka will have to transfer to remain in the Premier League. He could go elsewhere or remain with West Ham in the EFL Championship, where he's under contract. Masuaku represents English Premier League side Sunderland. He played for the Black Cats during the first half of the 2025-26 season, before going on loan to French Ligue 1 side RC Lens. He'll return to Sunderland for 2026-27. Wissa led DR Congo, scoring three goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup twice against Uzbekistan and once against Portugal. Wissa is entering his second season with Newcastle United following four seasons with Brentford.

Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence identifies Travis Hunter's most impressive trait
The Jacksonville Jaguars have plenty of players with a lot of hype heading into training camp, but none more so than Travis Hunter. The sophomore star appeared to be on his way to breaking out offensively as a rookie, but a knee injury cut his season short. He has since undergone surgery and spent the offseason rehabbing, and there is no shortage of excitement to see how he performs upon his return.Ahead of training camp, quarterback Trevor Lawrence appeared on 'The Brent and Austen Show,' where he discussed each of his four wide receivers and what they bring to the table. For Hunter, Lawrence said that he has plenty of skills to recommend him, but one in particular stood out.Trevor Lawrence breaks down the unique skill set of each Jaguars WR and explains how they all make his job easier at QB:Full interview: https://t.co/kk8V3Ed4Uupic.twitter.com/nlQCQv58oM Austen Lane (@A_Train_92) July 28, 2026"I'd say if I had to pick one thing yeah, you throw it near him, he's gonna go catch it," he said. "Obviously, he's got speed, too; he's fast, can break tackles, shifty underneath when he gets the ball in his hands. Got a great feel for zones as well. But I'd say the biggest thing is just his ball skills are really, really impressive."The Jaguars struggled a lot with drops last season, which may be why Lawrence values Hunter's ball skills so well. It also gives Lawrence the ability to throw the ball to Hunter even when he might be under heavy coverage, because he knows Hunter will find a way to catch it.It's still not known for sure what Hunter's workload will look like at wide receiver this season, but he will factor into that equation, and when he does, it's safe to say that Lawrence will be happy to have him there. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence identifies Travis Hunter's most impressive trait

Phil Simms: John Harbaugh has New York Giants players' respect, attention
The New York Giants embark on a new era this week when they open their 2026 training camp at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. It will be the team's first away from their New Jersey facility since 2012 and their first under new head coach John Harbaugh. The camp is expected to be one that will instill discipline, unity and endurance in a team that won just 13 games over the past three seasons. Harbaugh's old-school ways will be a throwback to camps run by former Giants coaches Bill Parcells and Tom Coughlin, both of whom led the club to two Super Bowls each.Legendary Giants quarterback Phil Simms, who played under Parcells, told veteran NFL reporter Jason La Canfora that Harbaugh has already captured the respect of his team before they've even arrived at camp. Its so huge to have that guy," Simms said. "Ive been over there, and when John Harbaugh is in front of that group and they sit in that little theatre there with the lectern in front and Harbs comes in through that side door, trust me, everyone sits up straight and theyre a little bit nervous, because they know hes the man and he is in charge."Harbugh comes in the door after an 18-year stint as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, where he amassed a .609 winning percentage and a Super Bowl ring. He does things his way and the Giants don't want to change that. He has the full support of the team to the point where he holds the most sway in the organization. A five-year, $100 million contract solidified his position as the Giants' ultimate boss.It didn't take long for everyone in the building to understand that.He coaches them that way and drives them and he understands how to create those bonds between him and the players. He practices them hard and trains them hard and those things carry over into the season," Simms added. But how he presents himself to the team, Im just a big believer in him. Hes like Parcells. It didnt matter if I had a great game or not; hed come walk in that side door and hed throw a pen on lectern and it was, not really fear, but he commanded your attention. What hes creating there is a really good thing for that team.Harbaugh may ask a lot of his players and coaches, but the effort is worth the reward. For a team that has gone through 10 double-digit loss seasons over the last 12, reverting back to the basics feels like a breath of fresh air. This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: Phil Simms: John Harbaugh has New York Giants players' respect, attention

Former NFL LB believes 1 move would put 49ers in Super Bowl discussion
After they were knocked out in the wild-card round of the postseason, the San Francisco 49ers have added some real difference-makers on both sides of the ball over the last few months. While their roster is better than it was at the end of the year, they could still bring in talented players who could help take them to the next level. On Monday, a new name hit the market, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Vita Vea requested a trade.Every team in the league could benefit from adding a player like Vea, but former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes that Vea landing in San Francisco would make them legitimate Super Bowl contenders."If the Niners get Vita Vea.It's time to usher them back into the conversations. We've ushered the Rams into the Seahawks, as reigning champs, into the Philadelphia Eagles, they always stay in those conversations," Acho said on his "Speakeasy" podcast."Because you got to think about what the Niners are buildingthis offseason. I would suggest the Niners have had quietly, maybe the best offseason in all of football. You bring Dre Greenlaw back.I love the Niners linebacking core greater than any otherlinebacking core now.Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw. You go get Oso Odighizuwa. I believe that he is perfectly situated now to start atdefensive tackle.Alfred Collins continuing to ascend. You forgot about Mykel Williams,first-round pick from last year because of the injury.Nick Bosa looks as good as ever. "Now, if you can get Vita Vea, now think about the depth. Now, you're rotating three defensive tackles... I think if you bring in Vita Vea,now, that run defense, which was so porous last year, instantly becomes a strong suit.I think the secondary has questions.Outside of D-Mo (Deommodore Lenoir), everybody's got questions about thatsecondary. Is it Ji'Ayir Brown? Is it (Malik) Mustapha? But if you get somebody as stout as Vita Veya up front, playing next to Alfred Collins with Oso Odighizuwa rotating in,plus Nick Bosa on the outside, plus you got Mykel Williamson the outside, plus you got Romello Height.I just think that is an incredible formidable frontin that front seven."Vea has been phenomenal in his eight years in the league, recording 256 tackles, 79 quarterback hits, 35 sacks, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He's also made two Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl in Tampa Bay.With Vea reportedly interested in playing for the Las Vegas Raiders or in his home state of California, the 49ers have a good shot to land him if they're interested. Plus, they have to keep him away from the Los Angeles Rams before they bring back Aaron Donald and have the scariest interior defensive line pairing ever.More 49ers: 49ers' rookie has already earned the trust of QB Brock PurdyThis article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Former NFL LB believes 1 move would put 49ers in Super Bowl discussion

Patriots' Kayshon Boutte is Forcing a New WR Plan
Patriots' Kayshon Boutte is Forcing a New WR Plan originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. All offseason, there's been this undercurrent that the New England Patriots will trade away wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.Boutte has shown up at training camp and made it seem like that could be a very bad idea. The talented wideout has been the best player on the field for the Pats early in camp.Admittedly, I had Kayshon Boutte off my 53-man projection this spring. Thought he might force a trade or not show up to camp ready to go.I was dead wrong. Boutte's been the team's best offensive player in camp. Just had another deep ball for a TD from Drake Maye. pic.twitter.com/TCvM1WDxp0 Chad Graff (@ChadGraff) July 28, 2026MORE:Is Tom Brady having a mid-life crisis? The thinking for the Patriots was that with A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs added to the roster, Boutte's talent could be converted into a solid player elsewhere on the field.Particularly given the fact that the Pats have a deep WR depth chart past Boutte, it made some sense. There's another option, though, and Boutte is pointing it out loud and clear with his July performance so far: Keep them all.If the Patriots have Boutte, and Brown, and Doubs -- that's a tough cover.I have an extremely bold and controversial take: the Patriots should not trade Kayshon Boutte, play him besides A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, and simply have a very good receiving room https://t.co/CBBKl6st92 Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) July 28, 2026That post, from ESPN's Ben Solak, really does sum things up nicely. Teams often try to overdo it when they actually have an opportunity to weaponize a strong group.Drake Maye would love to have one of the best pass-catching groups in football. As far as the QB is concerned, it probably doesn't make any sense to trade Boutte. It could still happen, but right now, Boutte is making the case that having the maximum talent on the perimeter could be the way to go for New England.More PatriotsLatest PatriotsnewsTom Brady's Patriots legacy: How legendary QB set new standardComplete history of Patriots championships
