SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan took the blame for the car crash that left him with a concussion and other injuries, saying he took his eyes off the road to reach for his fallen cell phone before hitting another vehicle.Shanahan crashed into a 21-year-old woman driving in the other direction in Palo Alto on July 14 and was left with a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose and broken left hand and stitches for a large cut above his right eye. Shanahan was briefly hospitalized following the crash and hasn't been able to coach the team at the start of training camp. The other driver suffered minor injuries and did not need to be hospitalized.Shanahan spoke to a small group of reporters on Tuesday for the first time since the crash to explain what happened from his vantage point.I was going 20 miles an hour, Shanahan said. I was not on my phone, but I dropped my phone, and it was stuck in my seats. It was on my lap, and it slid off, and I went down to look for it, and took my eyes off the road for two seconds, and as I was coming up, the air bags hit me in my face.Police filed no charges in the crash.Shanahan has been unable to run the team or practice since training camp started on Saturday with assistant Chris Foerster in charge with assistance from coordinators Raheem Morris, Klay Kubiak and Brant Boyer.Shanahan has come out for portions of the first two practices to watch alongside general manager John Lynch. He said he is not bothered by the sunlight but loud noises like the music at practice are still an issue.Shanahan said he has made considerable progress and expects to make a full recovery. The 49ers have said that Shanahan is going through a similar protocol to the one used for players after a concussion and will resume coaching when he is recovered. Shanahan is entering his 10th season as 49ers coach and is one of the most highly regarded coaches in the game for his offensive acumen. San Francisco has made two trips to the Super Bowl under his watch following the 2019 and 2023 seasons and made two additional appearances in the NFC title game in the 2021 and 22 seasons.Shanahan has a 91-72 record in the regular season and playoffs for the 49ers, ranking third in franchise history in wins behind George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).The team overcame significant injuries last season to finish 12-5 in the regular season and win a playoff game as Shanahan finished fifth in voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL

ACC media members aren't expecting a bounce-back season in 2026 for Bill Belichick and UNC football, picking the Tar Heels to finish among the bottom three teams in the conference.According to a poll of 185 media members, which was released Tuesday, July 28, by the ACC,Belichick's Tar Heelsare predicted to finish 15th in the conference standings among the 17 teams in the league. Picked to finish eight ahead of Belichick's debut season, UNC posted a 4-8 record in 2025 that included a 2-6 mark in league games. The Heels were among the bottom five teams in the standings.Miami, which competed in the championship game of the College Football Playoff last season, received 165 first-place votes as the favorite to win the league. The Hurricanes, who joined the ACC in 2004, have yet to win a conference championship. They play the Tar Heels at Kenan Stadium on Oct. 31.Clemson (7), SMU (6), Louisville (4), Florida State (3), Georgia Tech (2) and Stanford (1) were the other squads to pick up first-place votes. Duke, the reigning ACC champion, was picked to finish 10th and N.C. State was the highest Triangle team at No. 7 in the poll. Coming off a nine-win season, Wake Forest is predicted to finish 13th in the ACC.UNC had 70 newcomers on its 2025 roster and Belichick added 60 new players ahead of the 2026 season, including 40 freshmen. Despite the turnover, Belichick feels the Tar Heels are ahead of where they were at this point in his first season. CINCINNATI (AP) Kyle Manzardo hit a grand slam, Chase DeLauter scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning and the Cleveland Guardians snapped a five-game losing streak, rallying for a 6-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader.Jos Ramrez had two hits and stole two bases in the fifth inning before scoring the tying run.Sal Stewart drove in three runs, including a two-run double to give the Reds a 5-4 lead during a four-run fourth inning. Stewart also had a solo homer in the second inning off Guardians starter Slade Cecconi.With Stewart on first base and two out in the ninth, Cleveland right fielder Angel Martnez made a diving catch on a looping fly ball hit by JJ Bleday for the final out and give Cade Smith his major league-leading 30th save.Colin Holderman (6-2) worked a scoreless seventh inning to get the win.DeLauter, whose sacrifice fly in the fifth tied it at 5, got aboard with one out in the eighth with a base hit off Cincinnati's Sam Moll (1-7) to extend his on-base streak to 18 games. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have yet to finalize a contract extension, but ESPN insider Adam Schefter believes it's only a matter of time before an agreement is reached.Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Schefter said he expects the two sides to work out a new contract despite negotiations extending into training camp."The Buccaneers have been a team that typically has gotten deals done once camp is underway," Schefter said.Schefter added that he doesn't believe Tampa Bay and Mayfield will ultimately go their separate ways."I think they figure out a way to get a deal done with Baker Mayfield," Schefter said.As for what that contract could look like, Schefter projected a significant raise for the veteran quarterback."My projection would be it's around $50M a year," Schefter said.Mayfield enters the 2026 season in the final year of his current contract after helping lead the Buccaneers to multiple playoff appearances since arriving in Tampa Bay. While the two sides have discussed an extension throughout the offseason, recent reports have indicated that negotiations are progressing slowly, with the organization not feeling pressured to complete a deal before the season begins.If Schefter's projection proves accurate, Mayfield would join the growing middle tier of starting quarterbacks earning around $50 million annually. Such a contract would reflect both his importance to the Buccaneers and the continued rise of the quarterback market across the NFL.For now, all signs continue to point toward Mayfield opening the season as Tampa Bay's starting quarterback while negotiations remain ongoing.
