It is all too easy to get caught up in the hype of first-round picks in the immediate aftermath of every NFL Draft, but history proves that the greatest impact is often made by players selected after Day 1. Case in point: The two best defensive rookies in the NFL last year Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Seattle Seahawks defensive back Nick Emmanwori were both Day 2 steals. The players listed below might not be the biggest names today, but they are clean schematic fits for their respective teams and appear to have a relatively clear path to playing time. It's why they're primed to make big contributions in 2026. And only a few of them were drafted in the first round. With training camp now underway, here are my AFC rookies to watch. AFC EAST The Bills projected starting inside linebackers Terrel Bernard and Dorian Williams have struggled with durability and consistency over their respective careers. Elarms-Orr has played in 47 games over the past four years and possesses elite speed. At minimum, he should prove a quality backup and special teams ace as a rookie, and I think his closing speed in coverage and as a blitzer could generate enough flashy plays that he winds up stealing a starting role sooner than later. With the Dolphins undergoing a significant rebuild, there should be multiple rookies making an immediate impact this year in Miami. With all due respect to new linebackers Jacob Rodriguez and Kyle Louis, the defender Im most excited about is Johnson, a polished cover corner who I think will prove to be Miamis best player in the secondary by the end of his rookie campaign. Full disclosure, Im much higher on Jacas than many, ranking him as the 32nd overall prospect of the 2026 class. As such, I think hell prove to be a steal at No. 55 overall especially given the talent New England will have around him. Jacas isnt as twitchy or bendy as some of the top-ranked edge rushers in this class, but he accelerates smoothly and forcefully. While not as tall, Jacas brawling style might remind some longtime Patriots fans of former franchise standout Chandler Jones. First the bad news: The Jets were awful last season and had plenty of holes to fill. The good news, however, is that GM Darren Mougey filled at least four of those holes with the club's top picks. Frankly, any of them could justifiably be listed here, but Im going with Ponds, who Im predicting to lead the Jets in interceptions as a rookie. AFC NORTH Young was the perfect draft-day response for anyone wondering if the Ravens would lose their rugged identity with Jesse Minter taking over as head coach for John Harbaugh. Young may not be the bendiest rusher of this class, but he plays with the passion and violence that has long personified this franchise. The Bengals gamble on traits as much as any team in the NFL, and the nearly 6-foot-4, 194-pound Davis offers a unique blend of size, length (33 3/8-inch arms) and speed (4.41 40). He projects as a future starter on the boundary for a Cincinnati squad whose current starters, Dax Hill and DJ Turner, are both scheduled for free agency after this season. I loved how the Browns played this draft and strongly considered wideouts KC Concepcion or Denzel Boston for this article. Ignoring Fano just to highlight others selected later doesnt give the Browns enough credit for accurately recognizing the much greater depth at receiver than tackle in this draft, and that it doesnt matter who will be catching the passes (or throwing the ball) if the blocking up front isnt up to par. Fano was the best pass protector of this class, and hell be forged by fire practicing daily against Jared Verse. Hell start immediately and soon prove to be a franchise cornerstone. I was tempted to list either right tackle Max Iheanachor or returner Kaden Wetjen here, but Bernard strikes me as the kind of savvy QB-friendly target that Aaron Rodgers is going to love. In fact, while I expect DK Metcalf and free-agent addition Michael Pittman to generate plenty of big plays on the outside, I wouldnt be surprised at all to see Bernard wind up leading the Steelers in receptions this season. AFC SOUTH McDonald was a first-round talent that fell to Day 2 because of perceived positional value. Still, given the Texans' elite edge combination of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, McDonald is ideally situated to splash. One could make a strong argument for linebacker CJ Allen (or fellow LB Bryce Boettcher) for this spot. But given the cover skills of the Colts starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward, Im especially intrigued by Haulcy in the deep middle of this secondary. Like free-agent addition Juanyeh Thomas, Haulcy is bigger than most safeties and his ferocious hits reinforce it. Hes also a proven ballhawk, which is why I think hell start as a rookie. With quality blocker Ezra Cleveland and pricey 2025 free-agent addition Patrick Mekari capably manning the guard positions in Jacksonville, Pregnon does not have an easy path to starting for the Jaguars as a rookie. However, he is talented, tough and experienced at both guard positions. Further, Cleveland is a pending free agent and Mekari struggled with both consistency and durability in his first year in town. While Cody Barton is a proven starting-caliber linebacker and Cedric Gray has flashed the skill set to be even better than that, Im excited to see how disruptive Hill can be in Robert Salehs defense. Hill was asked to play so many roles at Texas that he never had a chance to blossom. His range and rush skills could lead to big things for the Titans. AFC WEST Quick, agile and long-armed, I think Onyedim is going to develop into a better pass-rusher in the NFL than he ever was in college. Playing alongside Zach Allen and Nik Bonnito, he certainly was drafted into a defense that has the "horses" to aid in this development. Given the QB talent in the AFC West, adding edge rushers is always a good idea. Im particularly excited about Thomas speed in this division, however, as the opposing quarterbacks arent just quality passers, they are talented scramblers, as well. Thomas has the burst and closing speed to help corral them. Thomas may not start as a rookie, but dont be surprised if he plays a critical role as a designated pass-rusher right away. Needless to say, all focus on the Raiders rookies will start with No. 1 overall selection Fernando Mendoza. But after allowing Geno Smith to get sacked more than any other quarterback in the NFL in 2025, boosting the offensive line is just as important. Though Zuhn lined up at tackle and center with the Aggies, the Raiders announced him as a guard shortly after selecting him, and I think he has a shot at unseating free-agent addition Spencer Burford on the left side. As his experience at left tackle suggests, Zuhn is quite athletic, despite his hulking 6-foot-6, 319-pound frame, offering the pass protection and run blocking skills to help the investments in Mendoza (and Ashton Jeanty) pay off. Chargers fans are likely hoping that it is Jake Slaughter the blocker drafted two rounds earlier than Burke that makes the most immediate impact, and I think Slaughter has the toughness and girth to make the switch from center to guard effectively. But given the Chargers struggles with durability at tackle in recent years, Burke could prove to be more important. Hes surprisingly agile for his size, has experience at both tackle positions and plays with the surliness Jim Harbaugh requires up front.

Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino exited Mondays loss early with a sore right hand.Pasquantino was removed from the starting lineup in the ninth. He was replaced by Tyler Tolbert, who pinch-hit for him in the final inning. Just soreness, Royals manager Matt Quatraro said after Tuesdays game. Same spot, you know, in his hand where the surgery was. Just general soreness in his hand. Weve got to get in there and check it out and see how he feels later tonight and tomorrow. Pasquantino missed nearly a month with a right hamate fracture in the same hand. He underwent surgery and returned on July 9, just before the All-Star break.Royals starter Seth Lugo spun another solid start against the Twins, even if the Royals lost late.Lugo felt his pitches werent getting to the right locations at Target Field. So he dove into some research and came out with a different game plan Tuesday. And it worked, for the most part. Lugo allowed one run across six innings while relying on his defense. The Royals turned five double plays against an aggressive Twins lineup. I made a pretty significant adjustment to pitches I threw more than others today, Lugo said. You know, it worked out pretty good. The one exception might be the pitchers with expensive expiring deals such as Robbie Ray and Kevin Gausman. Pick up their entire contract and the prospect return wont hurt as much. The waiting game continues. The objective here is to get an early look at how the Eagles initial depth chart could play out. Well certainly update these projections throughout the summer to reflect meaningful developments from practices and preseason games.(For fun, take a look at my last 53-man roster projection from exactly one month ago.)OFFENSEQUARTERBACK: Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Cole Payton (3) [3]This feels like an especially important camp for Hurts as he adjusts to a new offense under Sean Mannion. Itll be really interesting to monitor his progress. McKee is the Eagles second-best quarterback. Hes shown promise in small sample sizes. Andy Dalton, who turns 39 in October, seemed to be QB2 in spring practices based on how the reps were divvied up but he just didnt look very good. At this point in time, I struggle to see how Dalton belongs on this roster meritoriously. Payton has enough potential to warrant a third quarterback role.RUNNING BACK: Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley (3) [6]If the Eagles offensive line is healthy, theres no reason Barkley shouldnt have another big year. Bigsby is simply too good to go underutilized but its not like the coaching staff is going to be eager to take touches away from Barkley. Shipley isnt a player that excites fans but hes going to have a role as a kick returner/special teams contributor/two-minute drill back/etc. Dameon Pierce and Elijah Mitchell are likely competing for a fourth running back spot but the Eagles can probably just keep at least one of them around on the practice squad.WIDE RECEIVER: DeVonta Smith, Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks, Hollywood Brown, Johnny Wilson, Darius Cooper(6) [12]DeVonta is going to have a huge year. How good do you feel about the receivers behind Smitty? The Eagles are counting on Lemon to make significant contributions as a rookie. Its possible hell be really good from the jump; well see if thats the case or not in camp. Nick Sirianni has framed Wicks as a top three receiver on this team and even compared aspects of his game to Keenan Allen. Brown is probably being slept on and its possible he could be WR3 but for now hes WR4. Wilson currently seems to have the inside track on being the dirty work wide receiver over Cooper. Dont forget that Cooper really came alive last summer, though, and he could do it again here. I do think DC might make sense as a trade candidate for more depth at a different position, something akin to the Thomas Booker for Jakorian Bennett deal last year. Elijah Moore is a name to watch here, though I tend to think he could stay around on the practice squad, which is where he finished the 2025 season as a member of the Denver Broncos. Britain Covey could begin the season on the practice squad as the Eagles primary punt returner. TIGHT END: Dallas Goedert, Johnny Mundt, Eli Stowers, Cameron Latu (4) [16]Goedert is the clear top tight end and he could see more volume than he did last year in the aftermath of A.J. Browns departure. The front office might prefer Stowers to play more than Mundt but the coaching staff could be inclined to better trust the latter. Stowers was a part-time player in college and could need more seasoning before hes ready to contribute in the NFL. Mundt is expected to at least be a good blocker. Latu could contribute as a fullback in addition to being a stud on special teams. OFFENSIVE LINE: Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, Fred Johnson, Markel Bell, Drew Kendall, Myles Hinton, Micah Morris (10) [26] The starting offensive line should be one of the best in the NFL if healthy. And thats a big if. Itll be very encouraging if Dickerson and Jurgens can make it through camp without any issues. Big Fred could be a surprise cut candidate if the Eagles feel like Bell is ready to be the swing tackle as a rookie but I tend to think theyll lean towards keeping him. Kendall is unproven but the Eagles are seemingly counting on him to be the top interior option, just like Brett Toth was last season. Hinton is training at left guard after spending his rookie season at tackle; demonstrating versatility could help him make the roster. The Eagles might not want to cut Morris as a rookie. Cameron Williams and Willie Lampkin are tough cuts here but the Eagles might be able to stash them on injured reserve or something. Veteran journeyman Michael Jordan could also push for a roster spot.DEFENSEEDGE DEFENDER: Jonathan Greenard, Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Arnold Ebiketie, A.J. Epenesa (5) [31]Mark my words: barring injury, Greenard will get back to being a double-digit sacker this season. Hes going to be a real nice addition to this defense. Itll be interesting to see how the Eagles split snaps between Smith and Hunt. Its easier to be bullish about the latter at this point in time but I think some are forgetting just how good Smith was for a large portion of the Eagles Super Bowl LIX-winning season. The 2023 first-round pick could bounce back after a lost year in 2025. Ebiketie is a fine fit as a fourth or fifth edge rusher. Epenesas medical situation bears monitoring after he failed a physical earlier this year but he should be able to make the roster if hes healthy. Brandon Graham can still play but it doesnt seem like the Eagles are rushing to bring him back for one last ride. And BG said he would like to have a camp under his belt if hes going to come back for 2026.DEFENSIVE TACKLE: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Byron Young, Gabe Hall (5) [36]Carter wont be holding out nor holding in after receiving a big-time contract extension. The Eagles are counting on him to be healthier and much more effective this season. If Carter lives up to his potential, he can be the engine of the NFLs very best defense. The Eagles also paid big money to Davis because they believe his best football is ahead of him. Ojomo is on the Milton Williams path to have a big contract year before getting handsomely rewarded by a new team in free agency. Vic Fangio clearly likes BY, so, hes DT4. Hall was lining up next to Young on the second-team defensive line in the spring. Hes also just about four months older than Ty Robinson, who really struggled as a rookie. The Eagles probably dont want to risk exposing Uar Bernard to waivers but hes clearly not ready to play at all in 2026. They might be able to stash him away.LINEBACKER: Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Smael Mondon Jr. (4) [40]Baun is a stud. Campbell has flashed serious potential. One would hope hell be full go in camp after he missed spring practices due to his shoulder recovery. Trot Jr. isnt realistically going to beat out Campbell but hes going to try his hardest to make it close; Trots a good player. Mondon Jr. has showed enough potential on defense in addition to being a special teams guy. The Eagles could feasibly keep five at this position with Chance Campbell making the team. He could force the teams hand by having a strong summer. CORNERBACK: Quinyon Mitchell, Riq Woolen, Cooper DeJean, Jonathan Jones, Kelee Ringo (5) [45]No one will be surprised when Q has another All-Pro season. Would be nice to see him get his first career regular season interception in 2026. There might be some volatility with Woolen but Im bullish on the good outweighing the bad with him. DeJean is an elite slot defender who will also be playing at safety in the Eagles base defense. Jones is an experienced starter who has inside-out versatility; seems like a good backup option to keep around. Ringo has struggled as a defender but he can help on special teams. Mac McWilliams, Jakorian Bennett, and Shaun Wade could be competing for a sixth spot. SAFETY: Andrew Mukuba, Marcus Epps, Michael Carter II, Cole Wisniewski, Kapena Gushiken (5) [50]Mukuba got better as the 2025 season went along before he got hurt. The Eagles really need him to make a leap from Year 1 to Year 2. Fangio said the Eagles will be fine if Epps ends up starting and I agree with him. Epps is a cromulent NFL starting safety who wont even be taking 100% of the defensive snaps since DeJean will be playing over him in the Eagles base defense. Carter could push for a starting role but hell at least be the Eagles dime defender who provides depth at both safety and slot corner. Perhaps keeping both Wisniewski and Gushiken is too much youth; Ive previously had special teams standout J.T. Gray making the roster. But maybe Gray can be kept on the practice squad to help prevent the rookie defensive backs from being exposed to waivers.SPECIAL TEAMSKICKER: Jake Elliott (1)[51]The Eagles probably shouldve brought in some competition for Elliott, who is coming off two straight down years. But they didnt, so, hes the kicker. PUNTER: Braden Mann (1)[52]Mann is a solid punter.LONG SNAPPER: Rocco Underwood (1) [53]The Eagles didnt bring competition in for Underwood but the undrafted rookie will be competing against long snappers elsewhere in the NFL.
