Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia: I want to win the Champions League
Photo by Ryan Pierse - FIFA/FIFA via Getty ImagesFC Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia is ready for the next challenge.Ive been at Bara for a year. We won La Liga and the Super Cup, and this year I won the FIFA World Cup, so obviously the goal for the upcoming season is the UEFA Champions League. The World Cup is the ultimate title at the national team level, and the Champions League is the trophy that comes closest to it at the club level. That is the goal Im setting for this year, he said in a new interview. He was a backup for Spain as they won the World Cup in dominant fashion, but he was a starter at club level for both trophies, and is naturally expected to continue as the #1 for Bara.Despite his ambition, Garcia warned against becoming obsessed with any one competition. It has to be a middle ground. Obsessing isnt good because the negative impact can be huge if the goal isnt achieved, but we are very confident that we can do it.Last season, Barcelona failed to defeat Atltico de Madrid in the Champions League. In particular, a red card in the first leg made the job extremely hard.We are a very young team, Garcia, 25, reasoned. I think we have to learn from what happened to us last season. Luck wasnt on our side, but its something that should help us gain experience.Garcia arrived last season from crosstown rivals RCD Espanyol. A product of the Espanyol academy, he became a standout after reaching the first team. His maiden season with Barcelona was a success, despite dealing with injury struggles early on. He ended up winning the league trophy as the undisputed starter.

Islam Makhachev reacts to Conor McGregor blowing out his knee at UFC 329: I feel bad
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 15: Islam Makhachev of Russia reacts to the end of a round in the UFC welterweight championship fight during the UFC 322 event at Madison Square Garden on November 15, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Theres certainly no love lost between Islam Makhachevs team and Conor McGregor, but even the reigning UFC welterweight champion couldnt celebrate watching the Irish superstars long-awaited comeback end in such devastating fashion.Following a five-year long layoff due to a broken leg suffered in his previous outing in the UFC, McGregor was poised for one of the most anticipated return fights in the history of the sport at UFC 329 in June. Sadly, McGregor threw a jumping roundhouse kick to open the fight and he landed awkwardly, which blew out his knee and tore his ACL.McGregor tried to continue, but the injury just wouldnt allow it and the fight was stopped just 69 seconds into the opening round. For his part, Makhachev definitely believed Max Holloway was going to beat McGregor in that fight but even he was disappointed in how the whole ordeal played out.Honestly, I feel bad, Makhachev told Complex Sports. I know Max is going to beat him but not fast like this in the first minute.I wanted to see how he fights after the five years [off] and honestly, I felt bad when this happened.View this post on InstagramSince the injury, McGregor revealed that after surgery to repair the torn ACL in his knee, hes currently targeting International Fight Week 2027 for his next comeback.McGregor has openly stated that his next fight is the final bout on his current contract with the UFC, which seems to hint he plans on reaching free agency and potentially pursuing fights outside the promotion.Of course, McGregors rivalry with Makhachevs team is well documented after he engaged one of the nastiest buildups to a fight in UFC history when he was preparing for a showdown against Khabib Nurmagomedov back in 2018.The volatile rivalry culminated in Nurmagomedov defeating McGregor and then jumping over the cage to attack one of his coaches, who had also been talking trash leading up to the fight. As for Makhachev, hes in final preparations for his first title defense at 170 pounds as he headlines UFC 330 in Philadelphia when he faces another Irishman in Ian Machado Garry.

O'Connor wins NI's first gold medal in heptathlon
Kate O'Connor wins Northern Ireland's first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games [Getty Images]Kate O'Connor has won Northern Ireland's first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the heptathlon at Scotstoun Stadium.O'Connor, a world indoor and outdoor silver medallist, finished top of the standings with 6,569 points and is the first new heptathlon champion at the Games in eight years.England's Jade O'Dowda claimed silver while Australia's Tori West won the battle for bronze. It is O'Connor's first senior outdoor gold and her first gold at her third Games, after she finished eighth in 2018 and claimed silver in 2022.The 25-year-old becomes NI's 12th medal winner in Glasgow, claiming the country's first gold at the Games in athletics since 1986.Kerr and Wightman revel in Wednesday warm-up for mile finalThe athlete who has never held her Olympic medalO'Connor was favourite heading into the event after the late withdrawal of England's Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who beat her to gold in 2022, and she certainly lived up to the billing. The Newry-born athlete led after the first two events on Tuesday. She ran the 100m hurdles in 13.54 seconds and produced a season's best 1.82m in the high jump.In a rain-soaked evening session she dipped in the shot put, throwing just 12.85 in difficult conditions. While she said she was "gutted" with that performance, she rallied and she bounced back well to run the 200m in a season's best time of 24.14, which was just 0.07 off her personal best as she strolled to victory in her heat. She earned 3,731 points across the four events to top the standings heading into Wednesday's second day of the competition and, with a 49-point advantage over O'Dowda, looked to be in pole position for gold.O'Connor further increased that lead on Wednesday morning as she recorded a leap of 1.82m in the long jump and a season's best 52.85m in the javelin to move 258 points ahead. In the 800m, she finished first as she ran 2:10.45 to take home NI's first multi-class gold medal since Dame Mary Peters won the pentathlon in 1974.Her NI team-mate Anna McCauley finished eighth in the standings, despite being second-fastest in the 800m behind O'Connor.O'Connor will receive her gold medal on Thursday at 18:30 BST.

Reds promote 2025 1st round pick Steele Hall to Class-A Daytona Tortugas
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - MARCH 19: Steele Hall #3 of the Cincinnati Reds turns a double play during the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants at Scottsdale Stadium on Thursday, March 19, 2026 in Scottsdale, Arizona. (Photo by Rob Leiter/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty ImagesThe Cincinnati Reds used the 9th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft on shortstop Steele Hall, then just 17 years of age, out of Hewitt-Trussville High School in Alabama. Hall had just recently reclassified to be a high school senior and therefore draft eligible, but the Reds had been scouting him as a potential #1 overall pick in the 2026 draft even before that.Safe to say, the Reds have long been high on this kid, and his first taste of pro ball in 2026 has shown precisely why.In 58 games for the Reds in Arizona Complex League play, Hall hit .288/.387/.518 (.904 OPS) with 10 homers and 24 steals, flashing both a patience at the plate and developing power while doing almost all of that at just 18 years of age. He turned 19 at the end of last week, and it turns out the Reds had a nice little present waiting for him.According to Sam Dykstra of MLB Pipeline, the Reds have promoted Hall up to Class-A Daytona, and hes expected to finish out the season with the Tortugas in Florida State League play. Thanks to both his elite play and promotions elsewhere, Hall has risen to the #2 spot in MLB Pipelines rankings of the top prospects in the Cincinnati system (behind only Alfredo Duno), and they currently rank him as the #47 prospect in the game overall.

Tottenham Hotspur Are In The Mix To Land This Talented Keeper: Should De Zerbi Get Him On Board?
Tottenham Hotspur Are In The Mix To Land This Talented Keeper: Should De Zerbi Get Him On Board? In a recent post on X, Calciomercato journalist Alessio Lento claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in the mix to land Benfica keeper Anatoliy Trubin this summer. It has been mentioned that Spurs would have to compete with Aston Villa and Juventus in the race to sign the Ukraine international.Trubins Solid Campaign In Portuguese FootballTrubin enjoyed a good run of form at the Portuguese club in the previous campaign as he was responsible for putting in a series of solid performances in goal for them in Liga Portugal. The 24-year-old conceded 43 goals and kept 21 clean sheets in 50 matches for Benfica last season across all fronts. The Ukrainian talent is currently among the most talented keepers in Liga Portugal. Hence, it is no wonder that Spurs are in the running to recruit him this off-season.His current contract at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2028, which could make it tough for Tottenham to sign him on a cut-price deal later this year.LISBON, PORTUGAL JANUARY 28: Anatoliy Trubin of Benfica celebrates scoring his teams fourth goal with teammates during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD8 match between SL Benfica and Real Madrid C.F. at Estadio do SL Benfica on January 28, 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal. (Photo by Jose Manuel Alvarez Rey/Getty Images)Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Roberto De Zerbi Get Trubin On Board?Trubin can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing with confidence ont he pitch. He is a solid handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make a few top saves at the back for his team.Standing at 1.99m, the Ukraine international is a commanding presence inside his penalty box and doesnt mind coming out of his lines to clear the danger when needed. Trubin has proven himself to be a consistent performer in Liga Portugal. However, the jury is out on whether he can replicate his good form in the Premier League if Spurs manage to sign him this off-season.We can expect Trubin to improve the quality of Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbis first XI. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the North London club next season.Furthermore, Trubin would serve as a good replacement for Guglielmo Vicario, who struggled to find consistency for Tottenham last season. All in all, De Zerbi would be wise to get him on board later this year.

Milan boss Ruben Amorim keen on Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg, desperate for signing
Milan boss Ruben Amorim keen on Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg, desperate for signingNew Milan boss Ruben Amorim needs reinforcements amid preparations for his first campaign in Serie A.While he fielded his beloved 3-4-2-1 formation against Celtic is the Rossoneris first friendly of pre-season, a 22 draw indicates theres a long way to go before the team even project confidence ahead of next season.Midfield remains a key area of concern, especially given Amorims tactical preferences. To that end, theres one veteran operator Amorim is keen to bring to San Siro.As reported by Calciomercato, Amorim is keen on Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg. Valued by Transfermarkt at 15 million. The 30-year-old Dane has been one of Ligue 1s most reliable deep-lying midfielder since moving to Marseille from Spurs two summers ago. Before Milan can make a move for him, though, they need to make some sales in the middle of the park. SamueleRicci and Youssouf Fofana are players heavily linked with an exit from the club.Hjbjergs contract at Marseille, fetching him a gross annual salary of 6.36 million per year, is set to run until June 2028.A safe betHjbjerg has experience and form on his side going into the new season. Given his market valuation, hed make for a safe bet for Amorims setup at Milan.Even before his stint at OM, Hjbjerg has been widely regarded as a player who can be relied upon for consistent performances deep in midfield. His intensity and engine would further help Amorim sustain performances with his tactical setup.Milan may need to sell midfielders before they can go for him, but if they can make a move happen here, they absolutely should go for it.Anshuman Joshi- GIFN

Huge breakthrough! Liverpool target now asks to leave club as move edges closer
Huge breakthrough! Liverpool target now asks to leave club as move edges closerOne key Liverpool target has asked to leave his club in a major breakthrough. It's fair to say this hasn't been the transfer window Liverpool fans were hoping for. With the new season edging ever closer, there is still plenty of work to do and not much to show for it.The expectation was that this summer would mark the beginning of a new era under Andoni Iraola. After a disappointing campaign, supporters expected Liverpool to move quickly in the market, strengthen the squad and give the new head coach everything he needed to hit the ground running.Instead, it's been a painfully slow process. To be fair to Iraola, he hasn't tried to hide the situation.During his first press conference, he openly admitted that Liverpool still need more signings and confirmed that the club are working hard behind the scenes to get deals over the line. That was reassuring to hear, but words only go so far. Fans are now waiting for those promises to be backed up with action. As things stand, Victor Munoz is still the only major arrival of the summer. He's an exciting young player with plenty of potential, but expecting one signing to transform a squad with several obvious weaknesses is unrealistic. If anything, the headlines have been dominated by setbacks rather than success stories. The biggest blow came when Yan Diomande slipped through Liverpool's fingers. The Reds were heavily linked with the talented winger for months and he looked like the ideal long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.Instead, he chose to reject a move to Anfield before eventually completing a transfer to Real Madrid. Missing out on one of the club's priority targets was a difficult one to take, especially given how perfectly he seemed to fit what Iraola wants from his wide players. Then there has been the uncertainty off the pitch. Michael Edwards' resignation has raised fresh questions about Liverpool's recruitment department at a time when stability is needed more than ever. The club are trying to rebuild under a new manager, yet the people responsible for shaping that rebuild are changing as well. That is hardly the perfect recipe for a smooth transfer window.Fortunately, there are finally signs that things might be picking up.Liverpool's attention has now shifted towards Bradley Barcola, who has quickly emerged as the leading alternative to Diomande. He's quick, direct, fearless in one-on-one situations and exactly the type of winger this squad has been crying out for.Whether Liverpool can get a deal over the line remains to be seen, but after weeks of frustration, fans will simply be hoping this is the moment the club's transfer window finally comes to life.Things are thankfully moving on more than just the Barcola front, too. Liverpool may end up needing to sign more than one attacker depending on what the future holds for Cody Gakpo, which is still up in the air.Barcola is a key target but he is not the only one.Liverpool are also after Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who is very highly rated and who has been tracked by the club for several years, including when he was first starting out at Gent. Now playing his football at Lille, Fernandez-Pardo has reportedly made a huge decision and given Liverpool a massive breakthrough in a deal to bring him to Anfield.L'Equipe report that Fernandez-Pardo has asked to leave Lille this summer in a huge update that means a move away from the French side now must be edging closer.Liverpool are not the only team in the running for his signature. However, given his versatility and ability to play across the front three a move to play under Iraola would make a lot of sense.Fernandez-Pardo could play anywhere in the Spaniard's system and even if Liverpool sign Barcola, there will definitely be room for another addition alongside Munoz, and the Reds' other attackers.
