Alban Gozo hadnt even thought to pray it was too elementary for me, he said but he asked his son if he would like to say the prayer. The young Zavier obliged.Still unable to find the wallet, they left the humanitarian center. But after leaving the parking lot, Alban Gozos phone rang. NEW YORK There are few things more demoralizing for Mets fans than facing the Atlanta Braves when the NL East foes are sitting in first place in the division. Having to play them right before the trade deadline feels like a cruel twist in what has already been a cruel season for the Mets, but this time, it was more like a plot twist.The Mets crushed the Braves Monday night in the series opener, then won the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, 3-2, to take the series.It was their first series win since before the All-Star break, when they beat the Kansas City Royals in two of three games, and their third straight win against top teams in the National League. The Mets (46-62) are feeling the pressure being eased off of them as they approach the deadline, knowing there is no longer a deadline to get back into the wild-card standings.I would say we are kind of like letting go, you know? said left-hander Sean Manaea. I think everyone kind of knows where were at, where we stand, but ultimately, at the end of the day, theres nothing us players can do about it. I guess were seeing that like that free and easy kind of level of baseball that ultimately is where we want to play.Carson Benge had the hero hit in the bottom of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 tie with an RBI double off left-hander Dylan Dodd (2-1). The rookie right fielder went 2 for 4 to snap an 0-for-6 streak at the plate.Left-hander Sean Manaea tossed five shutout innings before Drake Baldwin led off the top of the sixth with a double, and Matt Olson hit a game-tying, two-run homer. His last time out, he held the Los Angeles Dodgers to only one earned run over six innings.Its the first time hes recorded quality starts in consecutive games since 2024. Since moving back to the rotation, Manaea has posted a 3.88 ERA in nine games. In recent outings, his velocity has increased to 92-93 MPH. Its certainly helpful, but it might not be the biggest factor in his season turnaround.I just see confidence and conviction, interim manager Andy Green said. I see someone who is on the attack the entire time. Had that game spun a bit different, it would have been a situation where going seven or eight was entirely possible; I didnt see him tiring. He fell behind a couple of really good hitters and paid the price for it there, but the rest of the game, he was in total control.There were times when Manaea tried to nibble on the corners, but he was able to refocus to throw strikes. Hes no longer afraid to be beaten on his stuff in the zone.Its that conviction of throwing strikes, Manaea said. If I get quality strikes, its great, but at the end of the day, its just throwing strikes to the end, just having the confidence to attack.While Manaea might not be one of the Mets trade candidates, his second-half improvements bode well for the team for the rest of the season and into next. The team might have the third-worst record in the NL, but the priority remains winning games and building good habits. With so many young players on the team and more expected on the way after the deadline, the club doesnt want to create an environment where losing is simply accepted.Manaea has been a mentor to rising pitchers like Christian Scott and Zac Thornton. Even when he was struggling at the start of the season, he availed himself to anyone who asked, but the better he pitches, the more hell be able to help others.The Mets scored twice in the fifth to chase AJ Smith-Shawver from the game. The right-hander walked Tyrone Taylor to start the inning, then gave up a single to right by Brett Baty that allowed Taylor to go from first to third. A double by Francisco Alvarez scored Taylor and advanced Baty to third, where he was able to score easily on a sacrifice fly to center field by A.J. Several Big 12 teams, including the Colorado Buffaloes, will begin fall camp next week, making it the perfect time to predict how the conference will unfold in 2026.The Big 12 could be the most competitive conference in the country, especially after Texas Tech's quarterback fiasco. The Red Raiders are still the favorites, but BYU and Utah are close behind. We can't count out Arizona or Houston either, who have the contender ceiling but are firmly in the conference's second tier.After spring practices, we predicted each Big 12 program's 2026 record, with several teams hovering around bowl eligibility (six wins) and another group around 8-10 wins. Nearly three months later, has anything changed?We have gone a step further and predicted the final Big 12 standings a few days out from fall camp.Here are those standings from first all the way down to 16th, without a specific record prediction.Projected 2026 Big 12 football standings Texas Tech Red RaidersAnalysis: I am still saying the Red Raiders are the team to beat, despite losing Brendan Sorsby, but it is a whole lot closer.BYU CougarsAnalysis: The clear second-best team in the conference, and they should once again give the Red Raiders a run for the top spot.Houston CougarsAnalysis: The Cougars were a surprise double-digit win team a year ago, and they should be right there once again.Arizona WildcatsAnalysis: Noah Fifita can be in the Heisman conversation if he builds on his breakout last year, and that makes the Wildcats a top-four Big 12 team.Utah UtesAnalysis: A step back is somewhat expected with the departure of head coach Kyle Whittingham, but the Utes should still win 8-9 games.TCU Horned FrogsAnalysis: Bringing in Jaden Craig at quarterback intrigues me greatly. Yes, he is coming from the FCS level, but I think he gives the Horned Frogs a chance to win at least 7 games.Oklahoma State CowboysAnalysis: One-year turnarounds are possible in college football, and OSU is out to test that theory with nearly an entirely new roster. They will be much better than a 1-11 team, but I see 6-7 wins rather than 8-10.Arizona State Sun DevilsAnalysis:Kansas State WildcatsAnalysis: I do think Collin Klein improves the team, but I still think Avery Johnson needs to take a massive step forward for the Wildcats to be considered a top-five team.Cincinnati BearcatsAnalysis: Here we start to get into the 6-6, 5-7 range of teams. I like the Bearcats, but don't see them much better than 6-6.Colorado BuffaloesAnalysis: Some people see another 3-9 season coming for the Buffs; I am not one. I see a 6-6 team with a ceiling of 8 wins.Baylor BearsAnalysis: I like DJ Lagway, and if Dave Aranda can fix his defense, which he was hired a few years ago to do, then maybe the Bears can do something.UCF KnightsAnalysis: I wasn't a fan of the Knights last year, and that was the right choice with UCF going 4-8. I see a one-or two-win improvement, but that is it.West Virginia MountaineersAnalysis: Rich Rodriguez is building something in Morgantown, but 2026 is too early, and they remain a 3-9 or 4-8 team.Iowa State CyclonesAnalysis: I think it is a race between Iowa State and Kansas to the bottom of the Big 12. The Cyclones "lose" the race because I think Jaylen Raynor is light-years better than whatever the quarterback situation is in Lawrence.Kansas JayhawksAnalysis: I don't think there will be a 1-11 team in the Big 12 this year, but if any team can be that team, it is the Kansas Jayhawks. San Francisco 49ers receiver Ricky Pearsall has been sidelined by a knee injury and there is no timeline for his return. The 49ers said Wednesday that Pearsall is dealing with swelling in the right knee that is related to the posterior cruciate ligament injury that forced him to miss eight games in the 2025 regular season. The team is concerned that the knee is still an issue after Pearsall participated in just two practices in training camp and is evaluating all options. Pearsall is one of several 49ers dealing with injuries early in training camp. Running back Jordan James is out with broken ribs suffered on Monday and safety Malik Mustapha is out with a hamstring strain. They join a list of injured players that also include receiver Christian Kirk (calf strain), swing tackle Vederian Lowe (high ankle sprain) and rookie defensive lineman Gracen Halton (bruised knee bone). The injury to Pearsall is potentially the most significant with him being counted on to play a big role in the passing game this season. Pearsall has flashed when he is healthy, but has struggled to stay on the field since being drafted in the first round in 2024. He missed most of training camp as a rookie with a shoulder injury and then was shot in a robbery attempt just before the start of that season. Pearsall returned to make 31 catches for 400 yards and three TDs in 11 games. Pearsall was slowed early last summer by a hamstring injury, but got off to a fast start to the season with 20 catches for 327 yards in his first four games before going down with a knee injury in Week 4. He missed the next six games and had only five catches for 20 yards in his first three games back. Pearsall then had six catches for 96 yards the following game against Tennessee before reaggravating the knee injury. He missed two of the final three regular-season games and the playoff opener before being a nonfactor in a divisional round loss to Seattle. Pearsall has 67 catches for 928 yards and three TDs in 20 games over two seasons. The injury to Pearsall opens opportunities for other receivers competing for the starting spot alongside Mike Evans. Rookie DeZhaun Stribling had another impressive practice on Wednesday with injured coach Kyle Shanahan once again watching for the final 50 minutes as he recovers from a recent car crash. Veteran Demarcus Robinson also made several catches during 11-on-11 drills Wednesday. "Its going to be fun to watch that room kind of become what it does over this next however many weeks of training camp," offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said before practice. "Its one of the positions where we have a lot of competition and Im excited to see where it goes." If the Clippers or National Basketball Players Association, representing Leonard, object to the league's findings or proposed punishments, the matter would go to an arbitrator jointly appointed by the league and union.
