SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGiants get down to business on Day 1 Were getting ready for the gamesJohn Harbaugh | Getty ImagesWHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.VA. The New York Giants know they are definitely not in East Rutherford, N.J. anymore. They have noticed the beauty of their surroundings, nestled snugly into the Allegheny Mountains. They have noticed the comfort of their accommodations at the ritzy Greenbrier Performance Center. They know, though, that they are not in West Virginia to sightsee. They are not on vacation. They are on a business trip. The business of preparing to be the best football team they can be in 2026.New head coach John Harbaugh made that clear on Wednesday, the first day of training camp. He noted the beautiful setting and thanked everyone who made it happen. Harbaugh, though, quickly turned to the business at hand when asked what he was evaluating in the early practices. Were chasing execution, Harbaugh said. Were at a stage now, were getting ready for the games. I mean, thats what practice is for. Were not here to practice. Its not a training camp exercise. Were here to prepare for the games that were going to play. What plays we call, how we practice, all those things. Were not just running plays out here to run plays. Thats why we want to keep our plays to ourselves when were doing them out here. So, thats what were evaluating, is our execution. Here are some of the things we saw from the sidelines on the first day of training camp.Differences for DartIt is clear watching the Giants practice that there are some differences in what is being required of second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart. He acknowledged as much Wednesday by saying Theres reps of things that I havent really had a ton of experience doing. One of those differences is the amount of work Dart is being asked to do under center. Roughly half of his 11-on-11 work Wednesday came from under center.Theres a few things mechanically that are different, Dart said.Probably just like the biggest thing is a little bit of footwork, landmarks in the pocket, but weve repped the hell out of it.Im feeling really good with the track that were on, and Im feeling comfortable. Its not something out there when Im on the field that I have to think extra about when Im having a rep at a certain play. Its more obviously just about readingthe rep from a conceptual standpoint, getting on time with all the guys, so, its been something that weve really, you know, pushed and really got a ton of reps out of this offseason.Malik Nabers dayNabers did individual drills and ran a few pass routes on air at the beginning of practice. He played a few minutes of catch with Dart when practice ended.Dominic Zvada is humanThe placekicking competition, where undrafted free agent rookie Dominic Zvada was 13 of 13 in two practices witnessed by reporters and Ben Sauls struggled mightily, was a big story during the spring. Both kickers got opportunities on Wednesday.Sauls made 4 of 5 kicks from 33 to 51 yards, missing a 43-yarder. Sauls also missed a 61-yarder wide right, a ball that had plenty of distance. Zvada was 4 of 6 on the day, missing an extra point and a 43-yarder.Practice highlightsDart threw a beautiful short out to tight end Chris Manhertz, floating it nicely over a trailing Abdul Carter.Cornerback Tae Banks got his hands on two passes. He broke up a throw across the middle from quarterback Brandon Allen that was intended for Xavier Gipson. He also got a hand on an off-target sideline pass intended for rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields.Jameis Winston hit Braxton Berrios for a 40-ish-yard touchdown. Berrios was well behind Nic Jones, the closest defender.Kayvon Thibodeaux, working with the second unit, broke the line and batted down a Winston pass. During a two-minute end-of-game drill, Fields had a leaping 15-yard catch that put the offense into field goal position. The defense missed chances for two interceptions of Dart. Safety Jevon Holland dropped an overthrown ball across the middle. Paulson Adebo had a pass down the middle go right through his hands into the arms of tight end Isaiah Likely for a big play. The defense also missed an interception when linebacker Tremaine Edmunds batted a pass into the air, and Arvell Reese and ArDarius Washington collided trying to bring the ball in.Take me home, country roadsHere are a handful of quotes from players and coaches about their West Virginia home away from home:Dart:This is like old school. Its like what you see in the movies, so I was stoked just to come out here with the team, and its a cool experience because in the league, theres so many external factors a lot of guys have families and things that theyve got to take care of off the field,so I think that us just being able to come here for extended daysand just being with one another, growing our personal relationships, but also having great communication from the football side, theres not a ton of things to do around here,so it forces us to be together, and we love each other as a team,so Im really excited about it.GM Joe Schoen:Talked to several general managers and head coaches that have been here, and its everything they said it would be. I mean, its beautiful. I think it was 60 degrees this morning when we woke up and came over here. So yeah, its a beautiful setting and again, they were ready for us and Im thoroughly impressed with the facilities.Brian Burns:NOTE: A railroad train was chugging by during most of Burns press conference, making it virtually impossible to hear him. Or, be heard by him.Its peaceful, a lot of mountains, trees, wildlife. So, you know what Im saying, its a peaceful view, but theres a lot of chaos on the field its beautiful out here. Theres a couple cribs up there [in the mountains], its nice. I notice quite a bit of things, were trying to figure out something to do on the off day, maybe well go fishing or something. Its (not) a lot to do out here.Injury notesTight end Thomas Fidone and defensive tackle Sam Roberts, who were initially on the PUP list, passed their physicals on Tuesday. They were both removed from PUP and took part in Wednesdays workout.Remaining Greenbrier practice scheduleThe fans are coming! The next three practices will be open to the public. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSean Payton on Jonathon Cooper: We're staying the course with league protocolBroncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper didnt take part in the team's minicamp after being arrested twice on domestic violence charges, but he is back with the team and participated in their first practice of training camp on Wednesday. Head coach Sean Payton said on Wednesday that he, General Manager George Paton and team owner Greg Penner all met with Cooper after the arrests and that Cooper completed a counseling program that the team made part of his path to returning. Hes been fantastic working away from the building, and well continue to do that, and monitor it. Were supportive, and very much aware of the seriousness of these types of things.Cooper faces an August 31 arraignment on multiple charges, including second-degree count assault by strangulation. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSuper disappointing: Red Sox third baseman breaks wrist in first game with teamThe Curtis Mead experience has halted, just as it was getting started. The Red Sox traded for Mead Saturday night, adding a key infielder and right-handed bat to the lineup. In his debut Monday against the As, Mead took a 95-mph fastball to the wrist in his second at-bat for Boston.Super disappointing, you know, it kind of doesnt feel real that its the first game and you know, there will be a break in between the next one," Mead said to the media following the game.Initial X-rays were negative, and the Sox say he had a left wrist contusion. After Mondays game, Interim manager Chad Tracy gave this update.Hes sore; were just going to take it day to day and see how he feels coming in, Tracy said. But little sore, but at least right now it looks like we dodged a bullet, maybe.Turns out they did not dodge a bullet. The following night, the Sox announced Mead is heading to the injured list with a broken wrist. No, its challenging, definitely mentally challenging, Mead said. I came here to play and be with the group down the stretch. So yeah, its definitely disappointing, but Im hopeful I can be back soon.As of now, Mead will be sidelined until further notice. The earliest Boston can activate him is August sixth.Tough, especially for the kid, Tracy added. Got here, a player we like. You could tell he was excited to be here, you could tell the guys embraced him, and we were ready to kind of live life with him in the lineup. And then that happens to him, so more than anything you feel for him. When asked if hell play again this season, Mead added that he hopes so.Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW0 Comments 0 Shares 47 Views 0 Reviews

Zavier Gozo opens the door behind his mom, Esther Gozo, in their Eagle Mountain, Utah, home. For the past half hour, Esther and I have been speaking over Zoom about how her son became one of the most talked-about names in American soccer. Zavier, who is just 19, says hello to me before hugging his mother goodbye. He is about to leave for Texas to play in Real Salt Lakes game against FC Dallas the next day. But he couldnt leave without telling Esther goodbye. Esther Gozo wishes her son safe travels and asks if he has everything he needs. He does. Love you, bud, she says as he walks away. If life goes Zavier Gozos way, this type of scene could soon be playing out in Europe. The Utah-born phenom could be hugging his mother goodbye before heading off to play matches for his new Champions League team in stadiums double to quadruple the size of Real Salt Lakes America First Field and with the sports most prestigious players. At just 19, Gozo is the leading goal scorer for his hometown Major League Soccer club. His coach calls him the teams golden child who plays with an unwavering belief in himself. His acrobatic goals go viral. Some soccer pundits and fans demanded the uncapped teen represent the U.S. at next months World Cup, though he reportedly didnt make the cut. Hes been garnering the interest of Champions League teams. Real Salt Lakes Zavier Gozo smiles and fans cheer after he scored a goal as they and Club America play in the Leagues Cup Phase One at America First Field in Sandy on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News But Zavier Gozo believes hes much more than just a soccer player.I think first of all, Im a child of God and thats what Im here to be, the teenager told me while sitting in the east stands of America First Field after training earlier this month, still dressed in his gray training kit. And Im here to help people and share his light and share his word. I feel like my only love was soccer.Zavier GozoUpbringing and journey to Real Salt LakeZavier Gozo stands barefoot on the grass of one of Reals practice fields in Herriman, Utah. The fearless winger isnt playing, but he has a soccer ball at his feet as he watches teammates scrimmage. A whistle signals the end of training. Gozo still barefoot dribbles over and sends a shot into the empty goal. The relationship between Zavier Gozo and a soccer ball has always been magnetic. My dad was a coach, so he kind of groomed me to be a soccer player for sure, Gozo said. I feel like my only love was soccer. His middle name Didier pays homage to the Ivorian great Didier Drogba, whose Chelsea jersey Gozo used to sleep in. He started playing rec soccer in West Valley, Utah, at just 3 years old. At his first game, his oversized T-shirt/jersey went down to his knees. He was so happy to have his own little shin guards and cleats, Esther Gozo recalled. In that first game, Zavier scored all the goals, according to his father, Alban Gozo, who recalls asking the coach to take his son out of the game for a few minutes to give the other kids a chance. You could tell that there was something there.Andrew MayAt age 14, Zavier Gozo joined Real Salt Lake Academy, the MLS teams residential youth soccer development program. You could tell that there was something there, said his former academy head coach, Andrew May. He was very relentless in his training. The intrinsic motivation Gozo possessed was evident even at the academy, and May knew that the ceiling was going to be very high for him.In his first season, some of Gozos teammates were called up to play for the Real Monarchs, Real Salt Lakes reserve MLS NEXT Pro team. But Gozo was not.Lets not fast track this, May recalled being told. Lets be patient. Lets make sure that hes getting what he needs.Frustrated, the future RSL star met with May. He remembers his coach telling him to be patient and that it was whats best for me in the long run.I think if I had gone earlier, I feel like my development wouldnt have gone the way it did, Gozo said.He finished that first season with 16 regular-season goals and added another five in the MLS NEXT Cup tournament. It was after that first season that Gozo realized his dream of pursuing soccer professionally was possible. In December 2022, at 15, the Real Monarchs signed Gozo to a MLS NEXT Pro professional contract. He made his Real Salt Lake debut the following October and signed his homegrown contract with RSL in February 2024. Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo poses for a portrait at America First Field in Sandy after team practice on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News But as he transitioned to Reals first team, he realized what most young players realize in that situation he was no longer the best on his team. You get up there, and you think youre the best player, Gozo said. You get into practice, you become the worst player all of a sudden, and you have to climb the ranks. I think that was the biggest shock for me.Gozo earned his first start on April 29, 2025. Its a moment, the young star thinks of often.I feel like every game I play I want to be as hungry as I was then, he said.I feel like if Im right with my faith, I play well on the field and I am happier off the field.Zavier GozoAbout a month later on May 24, 2025, he scored his first goal, 50 seconds into the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Upon scoring the goal, Gozo didnt know what to do, so he ran to the corner nearest the goal and screamed. His family was seated in that corner section and ran down the stairs toward him. Were watching. It just goes in. We just start freaking out, his older brother Elijah Gozo said. I think none of us really knew what to do.That moment is Esther Gozos favorite from her sons Real Salt Lake career.Id never had such an adrenaline rush, she said. That first goal came in the middle of a special, whirlwind weekend for the then-18-year-old. Two days prior, he graduated high school, and the day after the goal, he baptized one of his former teammates and best friends into the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.God has a perfect plan for me Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo speaks as hes interviewed by the Deseret News at America First Field in Sandy after team practice on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News Zavier Gozo has built his life and his soccer career on the foundation of his faith. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gozo regularly attends the temple, a dedicated house of worship where church members participate in sacred ordinances. Gozo also studies the churchs Sunday School curriculum daily.I always say God has a perfect plan for me and whatever happens is whats supposed to happen, he said. So I think that helps me play free during the games and live my life. Whether good or bad happens, I feel like its whats meant for me. The morning before a Real Salt Lake match, youll find Gozo at what Latter-day Saints believe is the House of the Lord. Last year, he decided to include worshipping in the temple as part of his prematch routine. Inside the temple, hes reminded of what Im really here for and what life really means to me.I feel like a lot of times I get too hyped up, and when Im too hyped up, I dont play my best, Gozo said. So, I just like to be in a calm mindset and feel like the Lord is with me.Gozo believes that if he prioritizes his faith, it shows on the pitch.I feel like if Im right with my faith, I play well on the field and I am happier off the field, he said.Gozo didnt always prioritize God. But following some serious internal reflection roughly two years ago, he committed to changing that, he said.A quick scroll through Gozos Instagram reveals that he uses scripture verses as captions for the majority of his posts.Soccer is a tool that I can use to spread the light that God has given me and all the blessings that hes given me, Gozo said.Every match, he plays with a white, makeshift wristband with a scripture verse scrawled on it. He chooses a new verse every season. This year, its Jeremiah 1:8: Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Real Salt Lake forward Zavier Gozo (72) loses his cleat during a challenge by Seattle Sounders defender Yeimar Gmez (28) during the first half of the game at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026. | Rio Giancarlo, Deseret News Underneath the scripture, he writes Just be you and the names of his mother and girlfriend, Afton Perry, who plays soccer for BYU.I think its just a reminder every time I step on the pitch who Im playing for and what I should be, he said. His older brother has seen faith ground Gozo as the spotlight grows and pressure builds especially with Europe looming.I think the reason why hes been able to kind of stay grounded and stay humble and get through all those things is just being so centered in Christ and having that relationship with him, and having a good relationship with his family, Elijah Gozo said.Perry, who often attends the temple and studies scriptures with her boyfriend, said Gozo has relied on the Lord more as his life and career have gotten crazier.Alot of people try to find their confidence from awards or the fame or what other people have to say, Perry said. But I think he finds his confidence and true value, again, from his faith and what he believes.Whether I do good or do bad, I go home. I hug my mom. When Gozo was in elementary school, he and his father were at The Humanitarian Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where Alban Gozo volunteered as a teacher. The father and son were about to head to Burger King when Alban Gozo realized he had lost his wallet. Zavier Gozo suggested they pray to find it. Alban Gozo hadnt even thought to pray it was too elementary for me, he said but he asked his son if he would like to say the prayer. The young Zavier obliged.Still unable to find the wallet, they left the humanitarian center. But after leaving the parking lot, Alban Gozos phone rang. Someone had found the wallet, which meant Zaviers prayer was answered and he was able to get his burger after all.A safe space away from soccer Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo (72) gives fans a thumbs up as he exits the game as Real Salt lake and Portland Timbers play at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Real won 2-0. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Once Zavier has left the room, I ask his mother if she has time for a couple more questions. The first one brings her to tears.Whats one thing everyone should know about her son?Youre going to make me cry, she said. Hes got a great heart. Im so proud of him, and I think the gospel helped with that for sure, keeps him humble. But he really has a sweet heart. He treats me very well. He just really cherishes and works to have good relationships with his family and now with his girlfriend and her family.Esther and Alban Gozo separated when Zavier was 8 and divorced three years later. Though Alban is still very involved in all of their lives, Esther, Zavier and Elijah became a good tight unit following the separation. She considers her son one of her good friends. After two years living in the dorms at the academy, Gozo moved home at 16 and still lives with his mom in Eagle Mountain.Being able to come home after every training session and match helps the young star never get too low or too high.Whether I do good or do bad, I go home. I hug my mom, he said.Esther and her ex-husband worked to make their family a safe space for their son away from soccer, she tells me.It was never about being a pro to us, to me or his dad, Esther Gozo said. It was just do your best, and were always here no matter what happens, no matter what the result of the game is.Real Salt Lakes golden child Real Salt Lake forward Zavier Gozo (72) shoots past Inter Miami midfielder Telasco Segovia (8) during the second half of an MLS game at America First Field in Sandy on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. | Rio Giancarlo When Zavier Gozo isnt practicing or playing soccer, hes your typical teenager. He watches and attends as many of her BYU games as he can, including spring scrimmages, and he gets mad when his career prevents him from being there. He attends her siblings soccer games, where he is often recognized by young Real Salt Lake fans. My parents always think its crazy how one second theyre watching him on TV (doing) all these crazy things, and then the next second, hes just at our house just being himself and being a 19-year-old kid, Perry said. At practice, hes often smiling as he visits with his teammates. When he leaves the practice field, he greets Reals communications team with high-fives and fist bumps.Real Salt Lake head coach Pablo Mastroeni called Gozo one of the most wonderful, joyful, happy, smiling, pleasant players Ive ever met.I think hes ingratiated himself in a way where hes friends with everyone in the locker room, Mastroeni said. He gets on with everyone on the staff. Hes a model, a representative of this club and the state, and so hes really our golden child. The skys the limit Sporting Kansas City midfielder Nemanja Radoja (6) and Real Salt Lake forward Zavier Gozo (72) battle for a header during the first half of the game at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025. | Rio Giancarlo, Deseret News Gozos game is defined by creativity and confidence. While trying to break into Reals first team, Gozo learned to play with a sense of fearlessness. That came with some hiccups early on, as Mastroeni would talk with his young star about if he made the best decision on a play. Gozo made his share of mistakes, but Mastroeni said that hasnt stopped him noting the young stars recent goals with low percentage chances of success. His unwavering belief in himself is whats really setting himself apart because hes willing to go against conventional thought in certain plays, Mastroeni said. But he makes the play.Growing up, Zavier and Elijah would practice moves they saw on YouTube, including Zlatan Ibrahimovis legendary bicycle kicks, which they dreamed of scoring in a real game. That dream came to fruition last season when Zavier Gozo scored one for Real Salt Lake. Its his favorite moment of his career.Bicycle kick from Zavier Gozo!! pic.twitter.com/FEsE3FTDuh Major League Soccer (@MLS) September 18, 2025Mastroeni said Gozos defending has improved, and hes learned to preserve his energy through better defending and understanding of tactical concepts. His improvement has been through the roof, and if he keeps going at this pace, the skys the limit for Gozo, he said.To take his game to the next level, Mastroeni said Gozo just needs more games in an environment like we have here that is psychologically safe for the young players to make and learn from his mistakes, instead of at other clubs where you get yanked out of games for those same errors.Mastroeni said he sees the Utahn becoming a star on both the national team and eventually in Europe, home of the sports most prestigious teams and players. Hes the prototype of what you want from a modern soccer player, which is highly technical, goal-scoring threat, assist threat, Mastroeni said. Physically hes on par with some of the best players in the world, Id imagine, given that hes one of the top players in MLS. Zavier Gozos soccer future Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo takes a selfie with a fan as players sign autographs after a team practice at America First Field in Sandy on Friday, May 1, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News On Tuesday, at New York Citys South Street Seaports Pier 17, U.S. national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino will unveil his 26-player roster for the World Cup.Real Salt Lake hoped two of its players would be on it Gozo and Diego Luna. But The Athletic reported Friday that both players were informed they will not represent the U.S. at the World Cup.On Monday, Gozo told The Guardian, who published the entire U.S. roster Saturday, that he and Luna both received an email Friday after training, informing them that they had not made the roster.I thought I would be less disappointed than I was, he said. Obviously, it wasnt like I was supposed to go. I feel like I was disappointed, but I also think it just gave me so much more motivation to be able to make the first team, whenever that is.Prior to the news, Gozo had told me he was extremely flattered to be in that conversation.I feel like you dont grow when youre comfortable.Zavier GozoJust to be in consideration for one of the 26 roster spots is significant for a 19-year-old who has never been called up to the senior national team. To represent the senior team in the World Cup would be my biggest dream probably, Gozo said. I think the World Cup is the pinnacle of all soccer, so I think representing my country that Ive grown up in and thats given me so much, I feel like is my dream. His other dream is to play in Europe. In April, Gozo appeared on MLS Countdown and was asked about his dream scenario with some big-time clubs in Europe sniffing around Zavier Gozo.In the summer window, obviously, Id like to go to Europe, he said. Thats been my dream for as long as I could remember. I think thats the perfect time for me to take the next step. And if I have that opportunity, I 100% want to take it."In the summer window I'd like to go to Europe." Zavier Gozo talked to the MLS Countdown Crew about his club future and USMNT hopes. pic.twitter.com/ZeSjZdKN7c MLS on Air (@MLSonAir) April 28, 2026Gozo reiterated that hope in our recent conversation.I want to play in Europe, he said. I want to play in Champions League. I want to play in the biggest competitions and play for the best leagues. I feel like Im developing at a fast pace, and I think going over there, I would be able to adapt quick at the stage that I am.But Gozo cant just leave for Europe on his own volition. He is still under contract with Real through 2027 and with club options through 2029, suitors for his services will have to make a handsome offer to Real Salt Lake to buy his rights.Whenever Gozo leaves for Europe, it will be quite the change both personally and professionally after spending his entire life and career in Utah, but his family supports his decision. His parents may even take turns staying in Europe while he adjusts to his new life and environment.New tests await the young star as hell have to climb the ranks of his new team, much like he first did with Real. But hes at peace with the challenge. It will be hard I think, for sure, but I feel like you dont grow when youre comfortable, Gozo said. I think thisis the place where Im comfortable. So I think given that, I think I need to get out of my comfort zone. Real Salt Lake midfielder Zavier Gozo (72) looks over at fans as he exits the game as Real Salt lake and Portland Timbers play at America First Field in Sandy on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Real won 2-0. | Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Its his relationship with God thats given him that peace, and much like the scripture on his wristband says, he wont be alone. Wherever Gozo ends up and whatever life throws his way, hell always have his family and his faith to anchor and guide him.The Lords given me peace in my heart that this is the right time for me to go, and thats my biggest pushing factor, he said. Thats why I feel so good about it.0 Comments 0 Shares 43 Views 0 Reviews

The Gunners will be hopeful that their project and ambitions can convince the defender to choose a move to North London this summer._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow. You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMShould Manchester City stand their ground when dealing with Real Madrid?Should Manchester City stand their ground when dealing with Real Madrid?Rodri underwent back surgery on Monday to help alleviate a minor back issue. The Manchester City midfielder will undergo a short period of rehabilitation while also enjoying his time off after Spains successful 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. While Rodri is currently on holiday, Real Madrid are pushing to sign the Ballon dOr-winning midfielder this summer. A new report has indicated what La Liga giants are prepared to pay to sign Manchester Citys midfield general. However, what Real Madrid looks to be willing to pay to sign Rodri looks to be woefully inadequate. In this instance, is it time for Manchester City to stand up to Real Madrid? It could well be as the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners are attempting to sign an integral member of Enzo Marescas squad.Real Madrid are reportedly to bid over 50 million to sign Rodri.Fabrizio Romano has reported that Real Madrid have approached Manchester City over the possibility of signing Rodri. Furthermore, Romano reports that verbal negotiations have taken place between the two clubs. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has given his approval to move for Rodri and the La Liga giants are reportedly set to bid over 50 million to sign Manchester Citys midfield general.Manchester City have to stand their ground and only sell Rodri on their terms if they do at all.On first glance, an offer of 50 million, or just over from Real Madrid for Rodri would be woefully inadequate. Yes, Rodri is 30 years old, and only has 12 months remaining on his current contract. Also, he has only just returned to full fitness, after an injury-plagued past two seasons. However, Rodri is crucial to Manchester City. He remains one of their most important players and he is a leader and inspirational figure for his team. Real Madrids reported offer of around, or above, 50 million does seem to be unacceptable for who they are trying to sign.In this instance, Manchester City must stand their ground despite Rodris wish to return to Spain and Real Madrids interest in signing him. If City have a price that they will sell Rodri for, Real Madrid have to meet it. There is no middle ground to be found in this scenario. Or, City can hold Rodri to the final 12 months of his contract. This is a valid option also given how integral he is to Enzo Marescas side.Whatever happens in terms of Real Madrids bid to sign Rodri, you sense that Manchester City simply must stand their ground. They cannot afford to allow Rodri to leave for below whatever price tag they have placed on him. That is counter-productive and it is up to Real Madrid to satisfy Manchester Citys demands. It isnt on City to cater to them or Rodris wishes in this scenario.0 Comments 0 Shares 37 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCarson Benge helps Mets take series from Braves with Game 1 doubleheader winNEW YORK There are few things more demoralizing for Mets fans than facing the Atlanta Braves when the NL East foes are sitting in first place in the division. Having to play them right before the trade deadline feels like a cruel twist in what has already been a cruel season for the Mets, but this time, it was more like a plot twist. The Mets crushed the Braves Monday night in the series opener, then won the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, 3-2, to take the series. It was their first series win since before the All-Star break, when they beat the Kansas City Royals in two of three games, and their third straight win against top teams in the National League. The Mets (46-62) are feeling the pressure being eased off of them as they approach the deadline, knowing there is no longer a deadline to get back into the wild-card standings.I would say we are kind of like letting go, you know? said left-hander Sean Manaea. I think everyone kind of knows where were at, where we stand, but ultimately, at the end of the day, theres nothing us players can do about it. I guess were seeing that like that free and easy kind of level of baseball that ultimately is where we want to play.Carson Benge had the hero hit in the bottom of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 tie with an RBI double off left-hander Dylan Dodd (2-1). The rookie right fielder went 2 for 4 to snap an 0-for-6 streak at the plate.Left-hander Sean Manaea tossed five shutout innings before Drake Baldwin led off the top of the sixth with a double, and Matt Olson hit a game-tying, two-run homer. It was a solid start for Manaea otherwise, his second straight, with the veteran holding the Braves to two earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out four. His last time out, he held the Los Angeles Dodgers to only one earned run over six innings. Its the first time hes recorded quality starts in consecutive games since 2024. Since moving back to the rotation, Manaea has posted a 3.88 ERA in nine games. In recent outings, his velocity has increased to 92-93 MPH. Its certainly helpful, but it might not be the biggest factor in his season turnaround.I just see confidence and conviction, interim manager Andy Green said. I see someone who is on the attack the entire time. Had that game spun a bit different, it would have been a situation where going seven or eight was entirely possible; I didnt see him tiring. He fell behind a couple of really good hitters and paid the price for it there, but the rest of the game, he was in total control. There were times when Manaea tried to nibble on the corners, but he was able to refocus to throw strikes. Hes no longer afraid to be beaten on his stuff in the zone. Its that conviction of throwing strikes, Manaea said. If I get quality strikes, its great, but at the end of the day, its just throwing strikes to the end, just having the confidence to attack. While Manaea might not be one of the Mets trade candidates, his second-half improvements bode well for the team for the rest of the season and into next. The team might have the third-worst record in the NL, but the priority remains winning games and building good habits. With so many young players on the team and more expected on the way after the deadline, the club doesnt want to create an environment where losing is simply accepted.Manaea has been a mentor to rising pitchers like Christian Scott and Zac Thornton. Even when he was struggling at the start of the season, he availed himself to anyone who asked, but the better he pitches, the more hell be able to help others. The Mets scored twice in the fifth to chase AJ Smith-Shawver from the game. The right-hander walked Tyrone Taylor to start the inning, then gave up a single to right by Brett Baty that allowed Taylor to go from first to third. A double by Francisco Alvarez scored Taylor and advanced Baty to third, where he was able to score easily on a sacrifice fly to center field by A.J. Ewing.Devin Williams got the save (15), pitching around a two-out single. Pinch-runner Jorge Mateo made it interesting by stealing second base with two outs. He was initially called out, but the call was overturned after a review. Austin Riley struck out to end the game.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBig 12 football final standings projection for the 2026 seasonSeveral Big 12 teams, including the Colorado Buffaloes, will begin fall camp next week, making it the perfect time to predict how the conference will unfold in 2026.The Big 12 could be the most competitive conference in the country, especially after Texas Tech's quarterback fiasco. The Red Raiders are still the favorites, but BYU and Utah are close behind. We can't count out Arizona or Houston either, who have the contender ceiling but are firmly in the conference's second tier. After spring practices, we predicted each Big 12 program's 2026 record, with several teams hovering around bowl eligibility (six wins) and another group around 8-10 wins. Nearly three months later, has anything changed? We have gone a step further and predicted the final Big 12 standings a few days out from fall camp. Here are those standings from first all the way down to 16th, without a specific record prediction.Projected 2026 Big 12 football standings Texas Tech Red RaidersAnalysis: I am still saying the Red Raiders are the team to beat, despite losing Brendan Sorsby, but it is a whole lot closer.BYU CougarsAnalysis: The clear second-best team in the conference, and they should once again give the Red Raiders a run for the top spot.Houston CougarsAnalysis: The Cougars were a surprise double-digit win team a year ago, and they should be right there once again.Arizona WildcatsAnalysis: Noah Fifita can be in the Heisman conversation if he builds on his breakout last year, and that makes the Wildcats a top-four Big 12 team.Utah UtesAnalysis: A step back is somewhat expected with the departure of head coach Kyle Whittingham, but the Utes should still win 8-9 games.TCU Horned FrogsAnalysis: Bringing in Jaden Craig at quarterback intrigues me greatly. Yes, he is coming from the FCS level, but I think he gives the Horned Frogs a chance to win at least 7 games.Oklahoma State CowboysAnalysis: One-year turnarounds are possible in college football, and OSU is out to test that theory with nearly an entirely new roster. They will be much better than a 1-11 team, but I see 6-7 wins rather than 8-10.Arizona State Sun DevilsAnalysis:Kansas State WildcatsAnalysis: I do think Collin Klein improves the team, but I still think Avery Johnson needs to take a massive step forward for the Wildcats to be considered a top-five team.Cincinnati BearcatsAnalysis: Here we start to get into the 6-6, 5-7 range of teams. I like the Bearcats, but don't see them much better than 6-6.Colorado BuffaloesAnalysis: Some people see another 3-9 season coming for the Buffs; I am not one. I see a 6-6 team with a ceiling of 8 wins.Baylor BearsAnalysis: I like DJ Lagway, and if Dave Aranda can fix his defense, which he was hired a few years ago to do, then maybe the Bears can do something.UCF KnightsAnalysis: I wasn't a fan of the Knights last year, and that was the right choice with UCF going 4-8. I see a one-or two-win improvement, but that is it.West Virginia MountaineersAnalysis: Rich Rodriguez is building something in Morgantown, but 2026 is too early, and they remain a 3-9 or 4-8 team.Iowa State CyclonesAnalysis: I think it is a race between Iowa State and Kansas to the bottom of the Big 12. The Cyclones "lose" the race because I think Jaylen Raynor is light-years better than whatever the quarterback situation is in Lawrence.Kansas JayhawksAnalysis: I don't think there will be a 1-11 team in the Big 12 this year, but if any team can be that team, it is the Kansas Jayhawks. Lance Leipold is a more-than-solid coach, so he prevents it from happening.Follow Charlie StrellaonX,ThreadsandInstagram.Contact/Follow us@BuffaloesWireon X (formerly Twitter) and like our page onFacebookfor ongoing coverage ofColoradonews, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Buffaloes Wire: Big 12 football final standings projection for the 2026 season0 Comments 0 Shares 55 Views 0 Reviews
