SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPost-Test retirement blockbuster! Ben Stokes leaning towards BBL move as Sydney Sixers lead race for signaturePost-Test retirement blockbuster! Ben Stokes leaning towards BBL move as Sydney Sixers lead race for signature originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.KEY TAKEAWAYS:Ben Stokes reportedly leaning toward joining the BBL after his Test retirement announcement.Sydney Sixers emerge as favourites, boosted by coach Matthew Mott reunion.Overseas draft scrapped, allowing direct signings worth over $300,000 to clubs.Ben Stokes edges closer to BBL return with Sydney Sixers tipped as frontrunnersCricket Australia insiders are reportedly growing more confident that Ben Stokes could feature in this summer's Big Bash League, and rival franchises now see the Sydney Sixers as the club best placed to land him.Stokes walked away from Test cricket abruptly in late June and hasn't featured in the BBL since turning out for Melbourne Renegades more than ten years ago.Once Stokes stepped down from England's captaincy and cut ties with international duty altogether, his schedule suddenly had room for far more franchise commitments. Every BBL club naturally had him on their radar, though it remained uncertain whether he'd give up spending Christmas at home for an Australian stint, or instead hold off and wait for South Africa's SA20, which only gets underway in mid-January once England's Test tour of South Africa wraps up.Signings are technically frozen right now, with Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers' Association still locked in negotiations over revised list rules, but according to Code Sports, the signs are encouraging.MORE:Langer rubbishes rumours of holding talks with ECBSydney Sixers are the likeliest to land StokesSydney Sixers are understood to have moved ahead of the pack. Part of that edge comes down to their recent appointment of Matthew Mott, the former England white-ball coach, as their new BBL head coach.Mott and Stokes go back a long way, having combined to win the T20 World Cup together in late 2022, a connection that could work heavily in Sydney's favour.Cricket Tasmania chief executive Dom Baker revealed earlier this month that Hobart Hurricanes were also keen on bringing Stokes on board. Baker credited his club's track record of sticking with reliable overseas recruits as central to their success, and said they'd be quick to pursue Stokes if the chance arose, particularly given his drawing power at the turnstiles.MORE:'A fairytale Ashes Return!' McDonald claims Stokes' England story isn't overI think probably the key to our success has been our consistency, particularly with our overseas players and well look to be consistent again, Baker said. But if the opportunity comes up to grab someone like Ben Stokes, particularly from a way to fill stadiums, well be at the front of the queue having a crack.Whether he will play or not I think is still up in the air, with announcements of Bazball finally coming to an end, I think theres probably a lot of soul searching going on over there at the minute so lets see what happens."Hed be very welcome here, what a better place to be if you want to download after a couple of years as the English cricket captain.Stokes isn't the only marquee overseas talent generating buzz ahead of the coming season. New Zealand trio Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson are all said to be in demand, alongside England quick Jamie Overton.MORE:Men's Ashes 2027 schedule: Dates, start date, venues and full fixtures for ENG vs AUS TestsA coup that would lift the whole leagueIf Stokes really does turn out for the BBL this summer, it would be one of the biggest overseas signings the tournament has seen in years. His name alone sells tickets, and having just stepped away from the pressure of Test captaincy, a stint in Australia could genuinely offer him the kind of low-stakes cricket he hasn't enjoyed in a long time. The Sixers' connection through Mott gives them a real head start, but the scrapping of the overseas draft means this race could stay wide open until Stokes actually puts pen to paper. What's more interesting is the timing tension with England's Ashes preparations. If Fleming does try to lure Stokes back for the international game, as Andrew McDonald suspects, it raises an awkward question about how much England actually wants their biggest match-winner spending the off-season in Australia rather than resting up.For now, though, Stokes appears to be prioritising his own recovery and enjoyment of the game, and few would begrudge him that after years of carrying England's Test side on his shoulders. Whichever club eventually secures him, Australian cricket fans stand to be the biggest winners either way.For all the latest cricket news, opinion, and commentary and to share your voice, head to ourFacebook,Instagram, andX (Twitter)pages.0 Comments 0 Shares 34 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona consider increasing their initial offer for Atletico Madrid star through variablesBarcelona consider increasing their initial offer for Atletico Madrid star through variablesBarcelonas quest to sign Julian Alvarez is likely to dominate the headlines in August, as the club patiently await an opportunity to pounce on.Atletico Madrid have been defiant so far and have shown no desire to sell their star player to a direct rival. But they are facing immense pressure, especially with Alvarez himself publicly announcing his desire to leave during the World Cup.Barcelona are ready to fork out 100 million on the Argentine international, but Atletico Madrid are having none of it and point towards his release clause worth 500 million.Barcelona consider increasing the offerWhat does the future hold for Alvarez? (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)According to Catalunya Radio, while Joan Laporta publicly stated that Barcelonas offer stood at 100 million, club officials have privately acknowledged the possibility of increasing that initial proposal through variables.Barcelona continue to view Alvarez as their primary target to strengthen Hansi Flicks attack this summer, even as Atleticos rigid position complicates matters considerably. The great hope among Barcelonas hierarchy is that Alvarez makes a second public gesture. The striker already made one during the World Cup by openly asking Atletico to sanction his sale, and the Catalans feel a repeat would be crucial. Without it, they consider it practically impossible to convince their fanbase. Alvarez is due to return from his holidays on August 10.Atletico file a complaintAtletico have no desire to sell Alvarez. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)The saga took another turn on Thursday, when the Spanish Football Federation notified Barcelona of a complaint lodged by Atletico. The Madrid club have accused Barcelona of negotiating with Alvarez, a player under contract with another club, prompting the opening of an information file. The move is the latest sign of the growing tension between the two clubs over the forwards future.Barcelona, however, remain relaxed about the matter. The club believe it will be very difficult to prove they are behind Alvarezs World Cup statements. For now, then, little has changed in Barcelonas pursuit despite the fresh developments. The club will continue to hold firm, hopeful that Alvarez forces the issue once more upon his return. Whether that gesture comes remains to be seen.0 Comments 0 Shares 36 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe next Takumi Minamino arrives at LiverpoolThe next Takumi Minamino arrives at LiverpoolThe next Takumi Minamino has arrived at Liverpool. Takumi Minamino may not have been a Liverpool superstar, but he became something almost just as valuable - a player who could always be relied on.The Japanese forward arrived at Anfield with a reputation for creativity, intelligence and a relentless work ethic, and while he never became a regular starter, he quickly earned the respect and affection of the Liverpool faithful. He understood his role perfectly and embraced every opportunity that came his way.Minamino was the definition of a reliable squad player.Whenever he was called upon, he brought energy, quality and a willingness to fight for the team. He was never the headline name, but he was the type of player every successful side needs - someone who could step in without disrupting the rhythm of the team and score important goals off the bench. His biggest contributions came in cup competitions.During Liverpool's successful runs in the FA Cup and League Cup, Minamino played a crucial role, scoring goals and helping the club navigate the early rounds. His performances gave Liverpool the depth required to compete on multiple fronts.Players like Minamino are often underrated, but they are essential.Since his departure, Liverpool have struggled to find someone who provides that same combination of reliability, professionalism and quality from the squad. He was not a star, but he was a winner - and Anfield loved him for that.In order to win league titles and compete on all fronts Liverpool need these kinds of players. It's what was missing from Arne Slot's previous squads. He didn't really make the best use of who was available in his first season which forced the fringe players to leave Liverpool for pastures new.Ultimately, that left Slot with very little depth in his second season and he rued that depth because ultimately it cost him his job.Andoni Iraola cannot make the same mistake and this summer's pre-season is a great opportunity for him to get acquainted with some of Liverpool's current fringe players. There's been a fair few impressive performances on the tour so far. Centre-backs Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye have both caught the eye.But arguably there is one player who might have gained the most from the pre-season campaign so far. IMAGO - Lewis Koumas Liverpool Right now there is a real gap in the attack. Hugo Ekitike is out injured, Federico Chiesa's future remains up in the air and Mohamed Salah has left the club. Who knows what will happen with Cody Gakpo who has attracted the attention of Tottenham.Liverpool have just Alexander Isak, Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz, who are guaranteed to be involved in the opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle United. This has given the opportunity for Liverpool's fringe attackers to step-up and among them the one who has impressed the most has been Lewis Koumas. The 20-year-old Welsh attacker has grabbed his chance with both hands scoring in Iraola's first game against Sunderland and putting in another great performance in the Spaniard's second game against Wrexham.Koumas is a real handful. He presses the opposition really well and he makes really smart runs in behind the defence. He's able to find himself in space a lot of the times and cause problems with his movement while his team are in or out of possession. His relentless energy makes him perfectly suited to Iraola's style of play and given everything he has shown in pre-season it looks like he could just be the perfect back-up for Liverpool next season. In our opinion, in Koumas the next Minamino has arrived at Liverpool, and he could be just as valuable as the Japanese cult hero once was.0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNewcastle set to pay Lukas Horniceks release clauseNewcastle set to pay Lukas Horniceks release clauseNewcastle United are now expected to press ahead with a move for Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.According to journalist Craig Hope, the Magpies will trigger the Czech internationals release clause if negotiations continue in the right direction. While there are still agreements to be finalised before any transfer is completed, confidence is growing in the Newcastle quarters that a deal can be reached.Hornicek has a 30 million release clause in his contract and has emerged as one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in Portuguese football following an outstanding campaign. The Newcastle target enjoyed an excellent 2025/26 season, keeping 24 clean sheets in 55 appearances across all competitions. His performances on the European stage were particularly impressive, with seven shut-outs in 14 Europa League outings. He has also carried that form into the new season.Hornicek delivered another commanding display as they claimed a 1-0 victory over Zeleznicar Pancevo in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.Newcastle are not the only side to have shown an interest. He reportedly turned down a move to newly-promoted Hull City earlier this summer despite the Championship club activating his release clause.Portuguese heavyweights Benfica have also made enquiries over his availability in recent days. The Magpies have already strengthened their goalkeeping options this summer with the 18 million arrival of Ewen Jaouen. However, the youngster endured a difficult pre-season outing against Bristol City and is viewed as one for the future rather than an immediate first-choice option.Horniceks experience, consistency and impressive record in European competition make him an attractive target for incoming Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle.Magpies boss Eddie Howe left his role abruptly, and the German tactician faces an uphill task next season.A task that wont be helped by the fact that Newcastle keep missing out on top targets and captain Bruno Guimaraes is set to leave St. James Park.0 Comments 0 Shares 47 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChristoph Freund believes Tom Bischof is ready for a more important role at Bayern MunichCINCINNATI, OHIO - JUNE 15: (L to R) Christoph Freund, Sporting Director of FC Bayern Munchen, speaks with Tom Bischof #20 of FC Bayern Munchen inspect the pitch prior to prior to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group C match between FC Bayern Mnchen and Auckland City FC at TQL Stadium on June 15, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images) | FC Bayern via Getty ImagesTom Bischof experienced a unique first season at Bayern Munich. Despite being a midfielder by trade, the 21-year-old earned most of his playing time at left-back in Vincent Kompanys side. While Bischof did a stellar job on the left of Bayerns defence, it was his cameos in midfield that really impressed. After Leon Goretzkas departure and the signing of German left-back Nathaniel Brown, Bischof looks set to return to his natural position in the heart of the pitch. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund is a firm believer in Bischofs abilities and believes the former TSG Hoffenheim man is ready to take on an expanded role. His role will become even more important, said Freund in an interview with Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). We have big hopes and complete confidence in him. He is a truly outstanding player and will take on even more responsibility while earning more playing time. Im convinced hes ready for that.Goretzkas departure will leave plenty of minutes for Bischof who spent last season behind the 31-year-old in the midfield pecking order. He may even look to relegate Aleksandar Pavlovi to the bench following a string of shaky performances at the World Cup. Regardless, one thing is certain: Bayern fans will be seeing a lot more of one of the clubs brightest talents this season.
