SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAFC join UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA's World Cup planAFC join UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA's World Cup planThe Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has joined UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA's proposed sale of stakes in its competitions to private investors, piling further pressure on plans backed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino. In a statement released on Friday, the AFC said it "stands in solidarity" with UEFA and CONCACAF, warning the proposals could not "realistically achieve the necessary broad consensus and unity required to move forward"."The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of global football and derives its strength from the participation of all Confederations and the world's leading football nations," the AFC said. "Any proposal that risks undermining the unity and universal character of the competition must be reconsidered."The latest intervention leaves FIFA facing opposition from three of its six continental confederations, making it increasingly unlikely the proposal would secure the support needed if put to a vote. The AFC also criticised FIFA's handling of the process, saying member associations had not been properly consulted before the governing body set the "direction of travel" on such a significant initiative. It said the process had exposed "fundamental weaknesses" in FIFA's governance, with confederations, member associations and even the FIFA Council feeling "sidelined".The confederation called on FIFA to urgently review its decision-making framework to ensure future proposals are developed through "proper consultation, meaningful engagement and appropriate oversight".FIFA said on Thursday it respected the concerns raised by stakeholders and remained committed to an "open and democratic consultation process", while arguing that inaccurate media reports had disrupted its planned discussions with confederations and member associations.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCarragher Shares Thoughts On Potential Salah ReplacementCarragher Shares Thoughts On Potential Salah ReplacementLiverpool Transfer News: Bradley Barcola Move Could Reshape Salah Replacement PlansLiverpools latest transfer thinking appears to have turned towards Bradley Barcola, with the Paris Saint-Germain winger emerging as a major target as planning continues for life after Mohamed Salah. The idea is easy to understand on talent alone. Barcola is young, quick, refined in possession and already seasoned at elite level. Yet once the excitement settles, the shape of the move becomes more complicated.Liverpool are preparing an opening bid for the France international, who is valued by PSG at around 145 million. With performance-related clauses reportedly capable of taking the package to 150 million, this is the sort of deal that alters the landscape of a window. It would not be a speculative addition or a market opportunity seized on a whim. It would be a declaration, one that places Barcola at the centre of Liverpools attacking future. That is precisely why the positional debate matters so much. Salahs departure at the end of last season left a structural absence as much as an emotional one. Replacing his goals is one challenge, replacing his function another. Liverpool lost a right-sided forward who shaped the geometry of every game. The question now is whether Barcola answers that need, or whether he solves a different problem entirely.Barcola Quality Meets Squad Balance DebateThere is no dispute over the players ability. Jamie Carragher made that clear when discussing the move, saying: Hes a great player, theres no doubt about that Id love to get Barcola at Liverpool,. But his wider concern goes to the architecture of the squad. Liverpool, in his view, are better stocked on the left than they are on the right, which makes a huge investment in Barcola feel curious unless it is part of a broader redesign. That concern has substance. Cody Gakpo offers a reliable option from the left, Rio Ngumoha remains one of the clubs more intriguing younger attackers and Vctor Munoz has also been added. In isolation, signing another left-sided player of elite pedigree sounds attractive. In practical terms, though, elite squads still require a certain balance. Too much accumulation on one flank can create a shortage elsewhere, particularly when the outgoing player was as singular as Salah.Carraghers central point was direct: But hes a left winger for me. Liverpools big thing that stands out like a sore thumb right now is replacing Mo Salah, a right winger. And I dont think Liverpool have got anybody really in the squad who looks fully comfortable playing right wing. That is the tension at the heart of this pursuit. Barcola may be excellent, but excellent players still need to fit the puzzle.Rio Ngumoha Path Adds Further ComplexityTransfer strategy is rarely about one player alone. It is also about who might be affected by his arrival. In this case, Ngumohas development hovers over the conversation. Liverpool have spent the past year nurturing the sense that there is a serious talent emerging, one capable of demanding meaningful minutes before long.Carragher acknowledged that tension, saying: That is a thought. Rios a young lad, hes really good. I think hes going to kick on from where he did last season. His argument is not that Ngumoha should prevent Liverpool from buying top-class footballers. It is that spending such a vast fee on a player of similar age profile and preferred position naturally invites scrutiny. That scrutiny becomes sharper because Liverpools previous messaging suggested caution around blocking Ngumohas route. If the club were once reluctant to crowd the left side, a move of this scale for Barcola represents a noticeable shift in thinking. Whether that means the youngster is now seen differently, or whether Liverpool believe he can develop across the front line, remains to be seen.Salah Replacement Still Defines WindowThe broader issue is that succession planning after Salah must be coherent. Liverpool may yet sign Barcola and a right winger, in which case this starts to look less like a contradiction and more like a comprehensive rebuild of the wide positions. That possibility was reflected in Carraghers verdict: But if youre saying to me, do I want Barcola to come and Liverpool are going to sign a right winger as well? Ill be absolutely delighted because players would have to move on.If that is the plan, the logic becomes clearer. Barcola would elevate the squad, increase the quality of Liverpools one-against-one threat and give the new head coach another dynamic attacker around whom to build. Yet if he arrives as the principal response to Salahs exit, the debate will persist. Liverpool do need great players. They also need the right players in the right places. For now, Barcola stands as both an alluring target and an intriguing test of Liverpools transfer logic. In pure football terms, the attraction is obvious. In tactical terms, the next step matters just as much as the first.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFIFA Set To Lose Vote Over Controversial Private Investment Plan After Europe, Asia & Americas Reject ProposalUPDATED with the latest: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has become the latest to reject FIFAs proposal to sell stakes in tournaments to private investors. The AFC has joined with the European and Americas football bodies meaning that it is now likely that more than half of FIFAs overall membership would reject the plan if it were put to a vote. More from DeadlineTrump Booed During World Cup Final TelecastFIFA World Cup 2026 Final In Photos: Closing Ceremony, Halftime Show, Donald Trump & MoreABC Says Comments Overwhelmingly Favor License Renewals Despite FCC's "Ongoing Retaliation Campaign" To Punish Network Over Trump CoverageThe AFC said FIFAs plan could not realistically achieve the necessary broad consensus and unity required to move forward. The number of countries comprising the three soccer federations is equal to more than 140, which is well above the majority needed to reject the plan. PREVIOUS: The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf), one of FIFAs six continental confederations that represents North America, Central America and the Caribbean, today flatly rejected a controversial plan to sell a 20% stake in the tournament to private investors.Concacafs 41 member associations issued a statement expressing deep concerns about the lack of due process surrounding the proposal, the artificially short deadline imposed, and the absence of any review or approval by the relevant FIFA governance bodies. Further, the statement questioned the need for private equity investment to fund new and existing FIFA Forward programs following the most profitable FIFA World Cup in history.Indeed, The Guardian reported that the 2026 World Cup generated a record $15B in revenue, blasting through all expectations. The proposed minority stakes would reportedly raise $4.6B for the non-profit FIFA.Concacaf directed their FIFA council members with engaging FIFA to determine how existing vast FIFA reserves could be used to increase FIFA Forward funding for football development across our region. While the North, Central America and Caribbean confederation is important to the tournament especially as a market for advertisers it pales competitively to the leverage the European countries hold.Of the eight quarter finalists at this years World Cup, six were UEFA members, and Spain won the tournament. There were similar statistics in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, and a World Cup without European participation would be a huge commercial and political hit to FIFA. Whats more, the next World Cup is due to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with other games held in South America.PREVIOUS: The governing body for European soccer has said all 55 of its member states will boycott the World Cup if FIFA pushes on with its controversial plan to sell stakes in the tournament to private investors.UEFAs member associations Thursday voted to approve the boycott at an emergency meeting. The decision throws the world of soccer into chaos and has echoes of the controversial 2021 European Super League proposal, which was abandoned after 48 hours. We unanimously and unequivocally reject Fifas proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other Fifa competitions to private investors, said a UEFA statement. The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of footballs greatest sporting legacies. It has been built over generations by players, national teams and supporters across every continent. No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.PREVIOUS: Controversial plans to sell stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private investors have sparked a furious response from football authorities and politicians.UEFA, the body that governs European football, took the unprecedented step of releasing a statement condemning FIFAs plan, which involves creating a new entity that would house the commercial rights to its mens and womens tournaments. The World Cup is not FIFAs to sell, said UEFA.JP Morgan Chase, the bank that financed the failed breakaway European Super League in 2021, is working with FIFA to create the business, which is being valued at around $20 billion, per various reports. Though the World Cup is not a commercial enterprise, the formation of FIFA Forward Enterprise would allow it to be exploited by private investors.FIFA confirmed the plan to create FFE and said it would be the controlling shareholder, but the controversial governing body hopes to raise $4.2B by carefully selecting long-term investors who will purchase minority, non-controlling interests.Thrive Capital, an investment firm led by Joshua Kushner, the brother of President Donald Trumps son-in-law Jared Kushner, has been approached about investing, it is reported. We have contacted Thrive for comment.Investigations in the Financial Times and The Times newspapers first revealed the FFE plan, which comes on the back of the recent World Cup.New UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham was among notable names slamming FFE, writing that the World Cup is not a product, and that once you have sold a piece of it, you have sold out. Even Sepp Blatter, the disgraced predecessor of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, wrote on social media: The close relationship between the FIFA President and the US President has reached a financial dimension that is deeply damaging football. No one has the right to sell our game.Under-fire FIFA President Infantino stands to personally make millions from the deal by becoming its commissioner after his expected third term at footballs governing body expires in 2031, the Times reported. We have contacted FIFA for comment.Infantino said FFE would see the commercial side of the game [operate] as a focused, dedicated business, with its value shared more and better all around the world, with FIFA claiming more than $10B would be redistributed back to its 211 member associations following the deals. The recent World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico was heavily criticized in some quarters for the implementation of mandatory hydration breaks, which effectively divided matches into quarters rather than the traditional halves. Also raising ire were Trumps intervention into the suspension of USMNT player Folarin Balogun and the extended half-time break in the Final to allow for musical performances. UEFA President Aleksander eferin boycotted that match in response to the various issues.FIFA made record revenues from the tournament, which it has touted publicly. Critics say finances are being put before the best interests of the game.UEFA considers World Cup boycottIt has been reported today that UEFA members are meeting to discuss their response to FIFAs plan, with a boycott of the World Cup one serious option on the table. While UEFA cannot stop it moving ahead, it is the strongest continental body in football with many of the worlds top international teams hailing from the continent. Of the eight quarter finalists at the World Cup, six were UEFA members, and Spain won the tournament. There were similar statistics in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, and a World Cup without European participation would be a huge commercial and political hit to FIFA. The next World Cup is due to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with other games held in South America. In its statement in response to FFE, UEFA said: This crosses a line that footballs governing institutions should never cross. UEFA takes it extremely seriously. The soul and governance of football are not assets to trade especially with zero transparency as to who gains financially. None of us are the owners of football. It is not FIFAs to sell.European dominance of world football has been a sore point for many years, and the Swiss-born Infantino has consolidated his power base by redirecting more funding and support to Africa, the Americas and Asia. It is expected that FFE would need to be ratified by a majority of FIFA members, though theres no word on when or how the vote will take shape.Tom Tapp contributed to this report.Best of DeadlineEverything We Know About The Film Adaptation Of Emily Henrys Beach Read So FarEverything We Know About The Pitt Season 3 So FarEverything We Know About Netflixs East of Eden Series So FarSign up for Deadline's Newsletter.
