6 takeaways from first week of Commanders' training camp
The Washington Commanders began training camp last Wednesday and have three practices in the books before getting a day off on Sunday. When Washington returns to the practice field on Monday, players will be in pads for the first time this summer. Over the first few days of camp, we've sensed a common theme: the defense is ahead of the offense. That's not to say the offense has been bad, but the defense usually looks better in the early stages of camp. Remember, the Commanders have a new offensive coordinator (David Blough) and defensive coordinator (Daronte Jones) who are employing new schemes. So, with Washington having a day off on Sunday, it feels like the perfect time to look back at the first few days of training camp. Here are six takeaways from the Commanders' first week of camp. Defense throwing everything at Jayden DanielsEarly in camp, Jones is throwing a variety of looks at Jayden Daniels and Washington's offense. It has sometimes been a challenge, especially for the interior of the Commanders' offensive line. At times, Daniels has had to hold the ball too long, which would be a sack in a real game. However, Daniels has improved each day and hasn't had a bad practice yet. It's terrific practice for him. Remember, he's playing under center exclusively for the first time in a while, and in a new offensive scheme. Every rep for Daniels against multiple and varied looks is a win for the Commanders. Center position is a real concernOn the first day of practice, Nick Allegretti went down with an injury. Head coach Dan Quinn said Allegretti was dealing with a calf strain and would probably miss a week. In the meantime, Julian Good-Jones is the No. 1 center, with rookie sixth-round pick Matt Gulbin as the backup. It's led the coaches to have other players, such as Brandon Coleman and Trent Scott, take snaps. While having backups get some valuable snaps early in camp would normally be a good thing, it's very concerning. Allegretti, while a reliable veteran lineman, is no sure thing at center. He's mostly played guard in the NFL. He has played center at times, but has never established himself there. The problem here is that this is a new offense, and Daniels is adjusting to playing under center more consistently. When you throw all of that into a pot, you reach a worrisome conclusion. It doesn't matter how great the rest of the offensive line is; if Washington struggles at center, that's a huge problem. We've written multiple times this offseason that center was more of a concern than wide receiver. The Commanders chose not to add another veteran to compete with Allegretti. With all due respect to Good-Jones, Washington can't go into Week 1 where it's only one snap away from a catastrophe along the offensive line. Wide receiver uncertaintyNicki Jhabvala of The Athletic had people talking on Thursday when she made the following post on X. My assessment of the first two days of Commanders camp: pic.twitter.com/RtTE7ELg5H Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) July 30, 2026For those wondering, Jhabvala posted a GIF of free-agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs, indicating that Washington's receivers not named Terry McLaurin didn't have a huge start to training camp. It's not like they've been bad, but there have been issues creating separation. The depth is really good, at least compared to last year, but there is still a glaring need for a No. 2 opposite McLaurin. Diggs remains a free agent, too. GM Adam Peters could be waiting to see how Blough's scheme can create separation, or whether players like Treylon Burks, Antonio Williams, or Dyami Brown give him the confidence not to make a move. Odafe Oweh is the real dealRemember when some criticized the Commanders for giving Oweh a four-year, $100 million deal? In the early days of camp, Oweh has stood out in a big way. He's big, fast, twitchy, and while he's fast, it's not just straight-line speed. Oweh can move side to side with ease and made an impressive play against Daniels on the first day of camp. Oweh and fellow newcomer K'Lavon Chaisson should have an excellent year if they stay healthy. Oweh is coming off his two best seasons and could have a huge year in Jones' scheme in 2026. Nice to meet you, Rasul DouglasVeteran cornerback Rasul Douglas just signed with the Commanders last month. On Wednesday, he took to the podium and introduced himself. When asked what he brings to the defense, here's how Douglas responded: "Turnovers. That's what I do. I get turnovers, so I'm looking to add that to the squad."Not only did Douglas have an interception early in camp, but he's always around the ball. It's remarkable that a solid veteran cornerback who has played well in recent years was still available. He went from not having a team one month ago to likely being a key part of Washington's secondary in 2026. The cornerback room suddenly looks much better and deeper after the addition of Douglas. Terry McLaurin's impact goes beyond SundaysTerry McLaurin essentially missed all of training camp last summer due to contentious contract negotiations with the Commanders. McLaurin is a team-first guy who doesn't like to miss anything. The team felt his absence last year. It was even worse when he missed seven games with an injury. McLaurin is Washington's No. 1 receiver, but he's also the ultimate leader, teammate and mentor. Quinn couldn't contain his excitement in seeing McLaurin back on the practice fields and in the meeting rooms. The Commanders need McLaurin. The eight-year veteran is often spotted working with younger receivers after a play. It's something he enjoys. He has taken a particular interest in undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley. Last summer, even after coming off a surprising 12-5 season with high hopes, something felt off. McLaurin's absence was a big reason for those "vibes" being off. He's back. So is a healthy Daniels, and the roster has added several young and talented players this offseason. This summer, the vibes are all positive. You can see the happiness on McLaurin's face. Quinn and Daniels, too. McLaurin's impact on this franchise goes beyond the box score. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: 6 takeaways from first week of Commanders' training camp

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes set to join Arsenal in 80m deal
Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes set to join Arsenal in 80m dealNewcastle United have reached an agreement with Arsenal over the transfer of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in a deal worth up to 80 million, ESPN reports. The Premier League champions have agreed to pay an initial 70m, with a further 10m tied to performance-related bonuses. The move is expected to be completed once the final formalities are finalised, with Guimaraes set to sign a long-term contract with the North Londoners. The 29-year-old is also set to undergo a medical on Monday before the transfer is officially announced.Newcastle have been picked apart this summer, with Guimaraes the latest key figure on the way out of St. James Park in what has been a chaotic transfer window for the Magpies. They had already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur before manager Eddie Howes shocking departure was announced. With Guimaraes on his way out, Newcastle will need significant investment to rebuild an already depleted squad to boost their chances of competing at the top end of the table this season.Theyve already sorted out their managerial dilemma, with Matthias Jassle set to replace Howe.Guimaraes desire to join Arsenal reportedly played a huge role in helping the transfer move forward, while Newcastle were prepared to consider offers after missing out on Champions League football. The Brazilian has been a talismanic figure for Newcastle since joining from Olympique Lyon in January 2022 in a deal worth around 40m.Over the past few years, he has established himself as one of the teams leaders and a fan favourite.Hes also considered one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, which explains why Arsenal were ready to pay a premium fee to secure his services.Despite missing two months of last season through injury, the Brazilian still finished as Newcastles top Premier League goalscorer with nine goals.Hed become Arsenals third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Greek winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who joined on a free transfer after leaving Leeds United.

Dodgers scored Tarik Skubal because they win every mind game | Opinion
Crazy to say it, but Matt Beaty and Michael Busch have ruined baseball.Who are they, you might ask?Oh, just a couple dudes with pretty left-handed swings who found their way to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, benefited from their tutelage, and eventually were traded to the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs for a couple of much younger players in River Ryan and Zyhir Hope, respectively.Who are they, you might ask?Perhaps you know of Ryan and Hope by now, or, as they could call them in the Motor City, Ryans Hope. Ryan and Hope and a young man named Brady Smith were traded by the Dodgers to the Detroit Tigers late on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 1.In return, the Dodgers received the greatest left-handed pitcher since Clayton Kershaw.Tarik Skubal is a Dodger, and perhaps more significantly the avatar for All That Is Wrong With Baseball, he and his new team the whipping boys for a looming lockout whether or not L.A. wins a seemingly inevitable third consecutive World Series title. It almost doesnt matter, now. The odds just got increasingly longer that an Atlanta or Philly or Milwaukee will upset the Dodgers in the National League playoffs. As for the dozen-plus dregs that might emerge from the American League quagmire?Hah. Get over .500, and then maybe we can talk about a World Series.Yet whether or not the Dodgers hoist the piece of metal come October, the narrative is well-established, that the Dodgers are buying championships, that their methods are as potentially nefarious as those of their kingpin, that no one else stands a chance because of All That Money.Which simply isnt true. (Well, some of it is).The more accurate truth: The Dodgers are kicking everyones behinds in every facet of the game: Drafting, player development, scouting (which includes assessing internal talent) and providing a workplace players want to be.And they probably just got over on the Detroit Tigers, in the same manner they got over on the Cubs and Padres to acquire Hope and Ryan, who along with Smith stood on each others shoulders in a trenchcoat and convinced the Tigers that this was sufficiently equal to Tarik Skubal. Not to denigrate the players headed to Detroit. Ryan has roared back from Tommy John surgery in August 2024, more muscular and now eight starts into a strong stint at Class AAA Oklahoma City. He could impact the Tigers rotation next spring, if not sooner.Hope, 21, is built like a running back, as MLB Pipeline puts it, has 23 homers and an .899 OPS at AA Tulsa this year, but swing-and-miss concerns exist, as he has a 25% K rate. Smith, a third-round pick in 2023, just got promoted to high A; hes struck out 14.9 batters per nine in his brief minor league career. But its hard to believe Detroit couldnt have aimed higher. Its quite possible the Tigers rate Hope higher than other Dodgers outfield prospects; player evaluation is insanely subjective. Yet why not hold out for Josue DePaula (a consensus top four overall prospect) or Mike Sirota (top 15) instead of or in addition to Hope, who ranks closer to 25 or 30 overall.Particularly since they pulled the trigger nearly two days before the trade deadline. Let the Dodgers fester a bit and see how badly they want the great Skubal. The other problem for Detroit, to borrow a phrase that has been beaten to death by New Age baseball sorts: Will these young men become the best versions of themselves in Detroits system?Nothing against the Tigers, but probably not to the extent they would as Dodgers. Which brings us back to Beaty and Busch.Beaty was a 12th-round pick of the Dodgers out of Belmont College in 2015. He was a solid contributor on 2019 and 21 Dodgers teams, posting a .363 OBP in 120 games in 2021.And then the Dodgers traded him to San Diego for Ryan and Baty promptly batted .093.Buschs path was a little more normal 31st overall pick in 2019, brief major league debut in 2023. Yet he was expendable because the Dodgers signed Freddie Freeman for relative pennies on the dollar once Atlanta deemed him replaceable. So Busch was traded for Hope and pitcher Jackson Ferris in 2024. And Busch has been pretty good as a Cub, smacking 34 homers last year, though hes only slightly better than a league average hitter this year.Point is, the Dodgers got him at the back of the first round, developed him into a consensus top 50 prospect and used him to plant a trade tree that eventually branched out to Skubal. Not to bum the Tigers out, but in the Andrew Friedman era, the Dodgers tend not to get burned with their deadline deals.Exactly 24 hours before the Dodgers acquired Skubal, the Baltimore Orioles quietly traded Dean Kremer and his 6.50 ERA to the Minnesota Twins. That closed the book on a 2018 deal in which the Dodgers got Manny Machado and a trip to the World Series and the Orioles got Rylan Bannon, Yusniel Diaz, Breyvic Valera, Zach Pop and Kremer the lone playable asset from that deal.Perhaps you remember Willie Calhoun? Dealt in 2017 to acquire Yu Darvish, who helped them to the World Series.Youd think dealing for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner in their prime might help your trading partner reboot its entire organization. Yet the Washington Nationals received adequate catcher Keibert Ruiz (ranked higher as a prospect than another catcher named Will Smith) and oft-injured pitcher Josiah Gray.Sure, the Dodgers arent perfect, and not necessarily out to destroy the trading partner.Miguel Vargas has developed into an All-Star third baseman after he was acquired in a deal for Tommy Edman in 2024. Yordan Alvarez (for Josh Fields) and Oneil Cruz (for Tony Watson) were massive misses, though both were teenagers at the time of the deals.None of this augurs well for the Tigers, and before you insist that they simply had no choice, keep in mind that by the end of this weekend, the Tigers will likely be within two games of a playoff berth.Dont let the talk of controllable assets and the need to reboot the system fool you: The Tigers simply forfeited a chance at a playoff berth and possible World Series.Sure, its possible they get there anyway. The AL is that bad, and the Central eminently winnable. But holding Skubal would have obviously enhanced those chances significantly. Now, Skubal is a Dodger, not because they lavished money on him, but because the Tigers chose to send him there, and they believed they had the most to offer in return.Funny how it always seems to work out that way. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Dodgers scored Tarik Skubal because they win every mind game | Opinion

Kelsey Plum traded to Mercury by Sparks: Trade details, what we know
The Los Angeles Sparks touted the acquisition of Kelsey Plum as the dawn of a fresh competitive start. Seventeen months later, the franchise is starting over.Los Angeles reportedly agreed to trade the five-time All-Star and two-time champion to the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday night. The move comes shortly before the WNBA trade deadline.ESPN reportedthe deal yielded the Sparks guard Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round draft pick and a 2028 second-rounder in exchange for Plum. This comes after Plum requested to be moved from the Las Vegas Aces after the 2024 season, leading to ablockbuster three-team tradeincluding the Seattle Storm that saw the Sparks deal the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft to secure Plum.First-year Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts committed to a "winning season" when Plum was formally introduced in Los Angeles. The team finished the 2025 WNBA season with a 2123 record, placing 6th in the Western Conference and missing the playoffs as Plum averaged 19.3 points per game. The Sparksare 10-17 so far this season and fired general manager Raegan Pebleyon July 12. Since then, the Sparks have lost six in a row.Plum had not appeared in a game for the Sparks since June 21, when the Sparks beat New York 98-97 at Crypto.com Arena. The team announced that she sustained a lower left leg injury. She also suffered a right ankle sprain in late May that sidelined her for three games. Plumwas asked Thursday about the possibility of being traded, and instead pointed to the fact that she planned to play again when the Sparks visitedPortland Sunday afternoon. Tip-off for that game was scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PT at Moda Center, and the trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 2."I'm not taking anything personal. I'm gonna be where my feet are. I play for the Sparks. So on Sunday, I'm gonna suit up," Plum said.Instead, Plum will be preparing to suit up for a new team. The Phoenix Mercury, which lost to the Aces in the Finals last season, have also failed to meet expectations so far this year. They have an 11-18 record, placing them 5th in the Western Conference. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY Sports: Kelsey Plum traded to Mercury by Sparks: Trade details, what we know

It comes right as speculation swirls around his MI future and his international comeback hangs in the balance. The image feels symbolic of someone stripping things back and starting fresh, whether that's intentional or not. What's clear is that Pandya finds himself at a genuine crossroads. His fitness has been a persistent concern for over a year now, and missing an extended stretch of international cricket only adds pressure heading into his return.Meanwhile, MI's insistence that no trades are happening doesn't erase the fact that reports keep surfacing from multiple credible sources, suggesting there's at least some truth to the smoke even if there's no fire yet.For a player who has spent years as one of Indian cricket's most valuable assets, both as a finisher and an all-rounder, this period feels less about optics and more about proving his body can hold up again. Whether he stays at MI or moves elsewhere matters far less right now than whether he can actually get back on the field consistently. For all the latest cricket news, opinion, and commentary and to share your voice, head to ourFacebook,Instagram, andX (Twitter)pages.
