Iowa saw a ton of top-tier talent depart the program this offseason across numerous positions. All three phases of the ball are undergoing significant changes this offseason as the Hawkeyes prepare for a new era. There's going to be a new quarterback under center, replacing the dependable Mark Gronowski. There will be three new offensive linemen to replace a trio that all got drafted into the NFL. And the special teams unit lost two All-Americans and its coordinator. Those position groups have a lot of work to do to maintain the high standard that was set a year ago. Even with all those changes, none of those groups are the most concerning area on the roster, according to head coach Kirk Ferentz.Ferentz spoke at Big Ten media days in Chicago on Tuesday. He broke down a myriad of topics, including which area of the roster concerns him most heading into the new season. His answer to that question was simple: the defensive line."Our biggest concern, area of focus, will be the defensive line," Ferentz said. "Seven of our top eight guys from a year ago are gone. Anxious to see how that goes. Saw a lot of growth in the spring and expect to see more in August. The one thing I will say, I can just forsee us probably rotating players on a more frequent basis than maybe we have the last couple of years. Don't envision anybody playing 500 snaps this season. We'll let all that shake out."The only guy with a ton of experience returning on the defensive line is Bryce Hawthorne. Outside of him, it's a lot of inexperienced players with high upside. Ferentz knows that he'll have to ease those young guys into the rotation, which is why he's planning to rotate up front more than usual.The talent is certainly there for Iowa's defensive line to be strong once again next season. The last time Kyle Harrison pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers was July 8 against St. Louis.The 24-year-old southpaw allowed three runs on four hits over four innings.Three days later, he was placed on the 15-day injured list with left forearm tightness.Harrison took what he hopes is his last step in getting back into the Brewers starting rotation with a rehab assignment on July 30 with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field.Harrison pitched 5 innings, blanking Lansing on one hit and three walks while striking out five in what was a 10-0 win over the Lugnuts.It felt good to get out there and attack the strike zone, Harrison said. A little more walks than Id like, but the stuff all felt good. The forearm feels good, felt nothing. Now Im just going to see where this takes me next.Harrison, who threw 68 pitches, was efficient with 46 strikes. He needed just nine pitches in both the first and fourth innings and in the lone inning where the Lugnuts got traffic on the bases, he used 14 pitches after allowing a double to Logan Sauve and a walk to Gunner Gouldsmith.Harrison, who is 8-2 with a 3.01 ERA over 17 games and 83 innings with the Brewers this season, felt he hit all the benchmarks he needed to hit to get back on the Brewers active roster.It was good to get out there today, he said. Involve the whole pitch mix. Throw with some intent behind it. Ultimately, get those game reps because those are hard to replicate.Harrison also had a nifty defensive play where he reached behind his back to snare a liner up the middle that he flipped over to Eric Bitonti to record the first out of the fifth inning.I definitely surprised myself with that one, he said. The Detroit Lions could activate defensive back Christian Izien off the nonfootball illness list this weekend.Lions coach Dan Campbell said before practice Friday, July 31, that the plan is to give Izien one more day to get better before returning to practice.Izien opened camp on NFI because of the flu. He worked out on a side field with trainers at Thursday's practice."We were hopeful today, man we just, hey, lets back this up one more day so hopefully after this day off Sunday hes able to go," Campbell said. "He had the flu, hes just still a little weak."Izien is expected to compete for a starting job at safety or slot cornerback to start the season.Regular safeties Brian Branch (Achilles) and Kerby Joseph (knee) are on the physically unable to perform list and not expected to be ready for the Lions' season opener against the New Orleans Saints, and veterans Chuck Clark and Avonte Maddox have taken first-team reps at the position through the first two days of camp.Roger McCreary has played primarily as the Lions' top slot cornerback."Really the plan was to start this going in, was that Izzy was going to, we were going to give him some of the base nickel stuff," Campbell said. "[We] set this whole thing up and thats kind of how it works and hes not able to go so we adjust. But hes really, I think lets give [him] the first shot of base reps, first-and-10s, second-and-6 or under, and let him play that. And hes done that before. Hes an active player around the box, obviously. And so thats on hold till he gets back, but hes really the first guy we think of [in that position]."The Lions also waived tight end Zach Horton and signed veteran tight end Anthony Firkser before practice Friday.
