SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Its just too soon': Rob Key reveals why England overlooked Harry Brook for Test captaincyEngland men's team managing director Rob Key has said it would have been "too soon" to make Harry Brook the new Test captain, explaining why the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to bring back Joe Root instead.Root's return as full-time Test captain was confirmed on Thursday, along with the appointment of Stephen Fleming as England's new Test head coach after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket and Brendon McCullum stepped down from the role.Brook, who is England's white-ball captain, was made Test vice-captain before last year's Ashes and has been Stokes' deputy since then. However, he was not given the captaincy when Stokes missed the second Test against New Zealand earlier this summer, and has again missed out despite showing interest in the role.Key said he and Fleming had detailed discussions about the captaincy before the former New Zealand captain accepted the coaching job. Both felt Root was the right choice at this stage. In an ideal world, what you want is the coach has a say in a captain, Key explained. Coach first, then you work out the captain I explained that to anyone that had a chance of becoming England captain.During the process, you are obviously speaking to different coaches and [the captaincy] is one of the questions you start asking, getting a feel for where they are at. Stephen and I spoke a lot about who we felt the best person was."Key said Brook still needs more time before taking charge of the Test side, while Root is ready to lead again. Its just too soon for Harry Brook. This feels the right time for Joe Root. He has the chance to work with what I believe is the best coach that will complement him as well. Those two will be a great complementary pairing to take England forward. He is our best ever batter, and now has the chance to captain the side without any of the stuff he had to deal with last time. Im just so glad he gets that chance," Key said as quoted by The Independent.Root had earlier admitted that he developed an "unhealthy relationship" with the captaincy during his previous spell, which ended after England managed only one win in 17 Tests during a period affected by the Covid pandemic. The 35-year-old enjoyed working with McCullum during England's recent Test series against New Zealand and will now begin a new partnership with Fleming, who is widely respected for his leadership during his playing career.Even though Brook missed out this time, Key said the Yorkshire batter remains England's long-term captaincy option.I think he is still developing as a player and a person, really, the former Kent and England batter said of Brook. The Test match job is the biggest job in cricket in England. I think that it is perfect now with Joe where he can take this ship forward as the most senior player by a long way, and Harry can continue on the project he has done in the white-ball job, and continue learning to become an outstanding leader of a cricket team."Youve got the 2027 World Cup, all of those things. At some stage, Harry Brook will be an outstanding Test captain of England cricket. It just doesnt feel the time was right now.0 Comments 0 Shares 24 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYet another 59 carded in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, this time on Korn Ferry TourA third golfer on a third different PGA Tour-sanctioned circuit has posted a 59 in the last eight days. Chris Francoeur is the latest to turn the trick, shooting 11-under in Friday's second round of the Korn Ferry Tour's 2026 Utah Championship. He lit up the Ogden Golf & Country Club in Ogden, Utah, with a first-nine 29 (he started on No. 10) before going birdie-par-birdie-eagle-birdie on Nos. 1-5. He closed with four straight pars to shoot the mythical 59 but seemed oh-so-close to 58 or perhaps even 57.Francoeur had a 17-footer for birdie at No. 6 and a 10-footer for birdie at No. 7 but settled for par each time. On the eighth hole he had a 35-footer and at the last a 23-footer. Still, his 11-under round goes into the record books as the 16th sub-60 round on the KFT.The first 59 of the Korn Ferry Tour season!Massachusetts native Chris Francoeur joins the history books @UTChampionship. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMLB insider Ken Rosenthal pours water on one of the biggest pitching trade rumorsWith the MLB trade deadline just around the corner, Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene has been one of the most frequently discussed names in trade speculation. Given his electric stuff and front-of-the-rotation potential, it wasnt surprising that contending teams reportedly reached out to the Reds to gauge his availability. However, it now appears that one of the deadlines biggest rumored blockbusters is unlikely to happen. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal has cast significant doubt on the possibility of Greene being dealt, suggesting Cincinnati has little interest in moving its ace despite the growing number of inquiries from around the league.MORE: One player every MLB team will trade at the 2026 trade deadlineReds Appear Committed to Keeping GreeneFor weeks, rumors suggested the Reds could consider moving Greene if presented with the right offer. Those reports fueled speculation that several contenders were preparing blockbuster packages in hopes of landing one of baseballs premier young pitchers.Rosenthals latest comments paint a different picture. While he acknowledged that clubs have been calling Cincinnati about Greene, he indicated the Reds are not expected to trade the talented right-hander. That significantly changes the outlook for teams hoping to add an ace before the deadline.MORE: 5 MLB pitchers who will be traded before the trade deadlineHealth Remains the Biggest ConcernCincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene (21) delivers a pitch in the first inning of the MLB National League Wild Card Game 1 between the Cincinnati Reds and LA Dodgers, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.Rosenthal also pointed out the one issue that continues to follow Greene throughout his career: durability. When hes on the mound, Greene has proven he possesses some of the best stuff in Major League Baseball and can dominate opposing lineups. The problem has been staying healthy long enough to consistently provide that impact. This season has been another example, as Greene has already missed more than half of the year because of injuries. While his talent has never been questioned, his availability remains an important factor for both the Reds and any team that may have considered pursuing him.Contenders May Need to Look ElsewhereIn baseball, no player is ever completely untouchable, and a massive trade offer could always change an organizations thinking.Still, Rosenthals report suggests it would take an extraordinary package for Cincinnati to even consider parting with Greene. That likely means teams searching for frontline pitching will now shift their attention to other available starters as the deadline approaches. With one of the markets biggest rumored names seemingly off the table, the demand for the remaining top pitchers could increase even further. For now, it appears the Hunter Greene trade speculation has cooled considerably. Unless another club overwhelms the Reds with an offer they simply cant refuse, Cincinnatis ace is expected to remain exactly where he is.Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter0 Comments 0 Shares 25 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHezekiah Masses field intellect has him rising in training campLOUISVILLE, KY - NOVEMBER 08: California Golden Bears Defensive Back Hezekiah Masses (5) looks on during the college football game between the California Golden Bears and the Louisville Cardinals on November 8, 2025, at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Michael Allio/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesThe Las Vegas Raiders invested heavily in the secondary during the 2026 NFL draft. They drafted two cornerbacks and 2 safeties to help solidify the backend of the defense heading into this season. One of the players selected was Hezekiah Masses from the University of California. Masses was a playmaker for the Bears last season with four interceptions on the year. He excels in zone coverage and can make plays consistently, baiting quarterbacks with his understanding of concepts to help him play fast on the field. He has great ball skills, with 5 interceptions this past season. pic.twitter.com/XLW1jS7ymo Marcus Johnson (@TheMarcJohnNFL) April 5, 2026Masses started to heat up during OTA sessions, with him slowly eating into steps of presumed starter Darien Porter. Klint Kubiak challenged him to improve during summer break, and it appears the former California Bear answered the call. On the first two three of training camp, Massess was running with the first team, with one report saying he was the first one on the field during team sessions.#Raiders just wrapped up practice. It was a strong day for the offense. Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins were solid. Mendoza completed a 25-yard pass to Deven Thompkins and then made an impressive throw near the sideline to Brandon Johnson. Cousins avoided pressure from Ryan McFadden (@ryanmcfadden_) July 30, 2026If Massess can continue to excel during training camp, he could push his way into the starting lineup when the season starts in September. While the fall of Porter could cause another missed draft pick by the Silver and Black, the emergence of another draft pick could help ease the pain of Raiders fans.0 Comments 0 Shares 37 Views 0 Reviews
