FIFA President Gianni Infantinos Future in Question as World Cup Investment Plan Scrapped
Matt Rourke/AP PhotoFIFA has officially scrapped a controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors as some experts say anger at the proposal could hinder FIFA President Gianni Infantinos hopes for a fourth term.Infantino, 56, who took over FIFA in 2016 from the disgraced Sepp Blatter, just wrapped up a World Cup which brought in $15 billion in revenue. But his push to bring in $20 billion with a proposal to involve private investors in the tournament including Josh Kushner, brother of President Donald Trumps son-in-law Jared Kushner angered many.Infantino had been expected to coast to victory for a new term, which would last from 2027 to 2031.Its hard to think of a situation where a persons political fortunes changed so rapidly, Victor Matheson, a sports business expert at the College of the Holy Cross, told Reuters.Again, as close as two weeks ago, hes riding, you know, on top of the world, the most successful sports mega event in the history of this planet, he said, adding, And just two weeks later, hes fighting for his political life. The backlash isnt the first time Infantino has irked FIFAs member associations.Hes obviously been kind of egomaniacal in everything that hes done. I know that hes rubbed many of the member associations the wrong way with some of his decisions, sports marketing analyst Bob Dorfman, a sports marketing analyst told the outlet. Some of the countries that have been awarded World Cups have been kind of questionable. Politics has gotten involved in this a little too much. The plan, which Infantino made public earlier this week, calls for the creation of a new body, FIFA Forward Enterprises or FFE, which would give investors influence over future World Cups and was expected to be bankrolled by Josh Kushner, according to reports. The plan was so controversial it prompted Carlos Cordeiro, FIFAs White House representative for the World Cup, to quit.Cordeiro slammed the private investment plan in a statement Friday announcing his resignation. The proposed deal had sparked rebellion in the global soccer community, with more than 100 countries rejecting the deal.I cannot stand by while FIFA considers selling a stake in the World Cup, Cordeiro said in his statement.Let me be clear. I had no involvement in this proposal, and I oppose it unequivocally, he said, calling it a bad deal for football and asking, Why now? Who benefits? The post FIFA President Gianni Infantinos Future in Question as World Cup Investment Plan Scrapped first appeared on Mediaite.

Arsenal close in on Newcastle United signing
Arsenal close in on Newcastle United signingArsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, which would be one of three signings the Gunners still want to make this summer.Photo by Stu Forster/Getty ImagesFollowing reports from France that Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for the signing of Bruno Guimaraes, The Athletic have weighed in on the situation. In an article largely about the ongoing pursuit of Vinicius Junior, Mario Cortegana, James McNicholas, and David Ornstein report that Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Guimaraes.Though they dont confirm LEquipes claim of an agreement in principle, it certainly seems as though things are moving in that direction.Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty ImagesThe Athletic claim that following the signings of Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis (and the permanent transfer of Piero Hincapie after his loan), Arsenal are looking to make three more additions this summer. One is a midfielder, likely to be Guimaraes if all goes well. One is a winger, with Arsenal hotly pursuing Vinicius, but waiting on the outcome of his contract negotiations with Real Madrid. The third is a centre-back to cover William Saliba during his injury absence.Theres no obvious frontrunner for a defensive addition, despite talk earlier this week that Arsenal might be closing in on one. Reported targets like Ezri Konsa, John Stones, and Jacobo Ramon all seem to be off the table right now.Photo by Mark Thompson/Getty ImagesUnless news suddenly breaks on the defensive front, it looks like Guimaraes might be the most doable deal at this stage.Though Newcastle sources continue to issue repeated denials, even they have conceded that Eddie Howes recent departure was in part due to the expectation of Guimaraes sale. Its not done yet, but with the player set to link up with Newcastle for pre-season this weekend, Arsenal will want to get the deal over the line sooner rather than later.Photo by JUSTIN TALLIS/AFP via Getty Images
