Ajinkya Rahane's career will always leave Indian cricket wondering what might have been.On paper, his numbers are respectable rather than extraordinary: an average of 38.46 across 85 Tests, 5,077 runs, twelve hundreds, twenty-six fifties. For most cricketers that would count as an outstanding career. For Rahane it somehow feels short of the mark. The figures don't capture the quality of the batting, the weight the runs carried, or the moments they arrived in. They suggest a good Test cricketer. Anyone who actually watched him knows he was capable of far more. It's the strangest statistical injustice of his career that he finishes outside the small club of Indian batters averaging above 40.India has capped 319 Test cricketers. Only 36 have finished with an average north of 40. For nearly two-thirds of his career, Rahane sat comfortably in that group. After his first 29 Tests he averaged 51.37, the best mark among all active Indian batters at the time, and this despite playing 21 of those matches away from home. The question then wasn't whether he'd finish above 40, but whether he'd push into the mid-40s. Then the final act rewrote everything. Across his remaining 56 Tests his average dropped by close to 13 runs per dismissal, settling at 38.46, one of the sharpest declines an established Indian batter has suffered, and about as clear an example as you'll find of a bad ending reshaping how a whole career gets remembered.That collapse tells one story. The rest of Rahane's career tells a different one.This isn't the story of India's most prolific batter.Numbers tend to struggle with impact, and Rahane's career keeps testing them. He carried drinks for 16 Tests before his debut. Only 32 of his 85 caps came at home. He captained India only when Kohli wasn't around. He was rarely the focal point of the batting order, yet time and again he was the man India leaned on when conditions turned nasty.Look at home versus away and the pattern jumps out. Few specialist batters in Test history have averaged more overseas than at home across a long career, and Rahane belongs on that short list. Where most Indian batters built fortress-like home records and just tried to survive abroad, he did close to the opposite. Eight of his 12 Test hundreds came away from home: Wellington, Lord's, Melbourne, Colombo, Kingston. The harder the conditions, generally, the better he played.That made him one of the most valuable overseas batters India had during its best travelling era.The strongest evidence sits in India's away wins. Rahane featured in 20 overseas Test victories, scoring 1,517 runs at 47.40 with five centuries and seven fifties. Among Indian batters with at least 10 overseas wins in this period, nobody else averaged above 43. Kohli managed 40.56. Pujara, 43.57. Rohit Sharma averaged 46.31, but from only nine such Tests. Whenever India won away from home, Rahane was very often one of the main reasons why.Yet this is also where Rahane's numbers begin to explain why he never crossed into the game's elite. Great batters usually own at least one or two series where everything clicks and the runs pile up. Rahane never quite had that. His best return came in Australia in 2014-15, when he scored 399 runs in four Tests at 57.00. Even then, he finished only sixth among the leading run-scorers in the series. He never crossed 400 runs in a Test series. That was perhaps the difference. Rahane produced some unforgettable innings, but rarely sustained them over an entire series.His centuries rarely came in comfortable spells either. Lord's, 2014: India were 145 for seven on a green top with James Anderson bowling as well as he ever has. Rahane's 103 turned a possible collapse into a defendable total, and Ishant Sharma's spell finished the job, India's first win at Lord's in 28 years. Months later he walked out at Melbourne against Mitchell Johnson at his most terrifying and made 147.Then Melbourne again, 2020. India had just been bowled out for 36 in Adelaide. Kohli had flown home. Rahane took over the captaincy of a dressing room with its confidence shot, and answered with an unbeaten 112, arguably the defining overseas century by an Indian captain. The series was levelled, and India went on to complete one of the great comebacks in Test history at the Gabba.Context is hard to put a number on. Rahane's career keeps asking you to try anyway.Here's a statistic worth sitting with: Rahane scored 15 international centuries across Tests and ODIs. India did not lose a single one of those matches. Every hundred he made ended in a win or a draw. Not many batters can say their individual milestones converted so consistently into team results.His year-by-year record makes for an equally fascinating graph. For the first four calendar years of his Test career, Rahane averaged above 40 every season, remarkable consistency for someone who spent most of that period playing overseas. The first signs of decline appeared in 2017, when his average dipped to 34.62, before falling further to 30.66 in 2018. Yet those numbers don't fully capture his contribution.During India's tour of South Africa in 2018, Rahane was left out for the Tests in Cape Town and Centurion, both of which India lost. Recalled for the third Test in Johannesburg on a pitch later rated "poor" by the ICC, he scored a vital 48 and stitched together a match-defining partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar to help India secure their only win of the series. Later that year, his 81 at Trent Bridge laid the foundation for India's only victory in England, adding 159 runs with Virat Kohli. Then came another fighting 70 at Adelaide in India's famous win in Australia. It became a familiar pattern. Even during his leanest phases, Rahane continued to produce innings of immense value. The problem was that they were surrounded by too many low scores.Just as the questions around his place grew louder, Rahane answered them. In 2019, he enjoyed the best batting year of his Test career, averaging 71.33. It seemed as though he had arrested the slide. Instead, the sharp decline arrived almost immediately. He averaged 38.85 across four Tests in 2020 before enduring his toughest year in 2021, managing just 20.82 with only two fifties in 23 innings. By 2022, he featured in only two Tests, averaging 17 despite registering a half-century. Those final years inflicted more damage on his career average than everything that had come before, dragging him out of the 40-plus club and ultimately shaping the statistical perception of his career.None of that happened in a vacuum, though. Between 2020 and 2022, India's celebrated middle order went through its worst collective spell. Kohli averaged 19.33 in 2020, 28.21 in 2021, 26.50 in 2022. Pujara averaged 20.37 in 2020 and 28.08 in 2021. Rahane's slump became the headline story because he was dropped first, but the downturn hit almost every senior batter in the side.There were cricketing reasons behind it too. The World Test Championship arrived around the same time India started preparing more result-oriented home pitches, and matches began finishing inside three days routinely, spinners dominating from the first session, even part-timers like Joe Root picking up five-fors on Indian tracks. Good for winning matches. Not much use to a batter trying to find rhythm. England, Australia, even Pakistan were producing noticeably flatter surfaces across the same stretch, where long innings stayed possible. None of that excuses the drop in form, but it goes some way to explaining why so much of India's middle order struggled at once. 132791316By early 2022 the selectors had seen enough. Rahane went back to domestic cricket and did what he tends to do, scoring 634 runs at 57.64 in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy. Then came another reinvention, this time in the IPL. Plenty had written him off as too slow for T20, but Chennai Super Kings found an aggressive gear in him nobody expected: 326 runs at a strike rate of 172.48, a decisive 27 off 13 balls in the final, his first IPL title.The form earned him a recall for the World Test Championship final, and he backed it up immediately, top-scoring for India in both innings with 89 and 46 against Australia's pace attack. A quiet series in the West Indies followed, and that was the end of his Test career.Go purely by career aggregates and Rahane sits among India's good Test batters. Dig a little and a different picture forms. After 29 Tests he averaged 51.37. He made more overseas centuries than home ones. He averaged 47.40 in India's overseas wins. Every one of his 15 international hundreds came without a defeat attached. He remains one of only 12 Indians with centuries in Tests, ODIs and the IPL.Perhaps that is why Ajinkya Rahane will always remain one of Indian cricket's greatest statistical paradoxes. His overall numbers fall just short of greatness. Almost every meaningful split, however, points towards a batter whose greatest contributions came when India needed them most. Sometimes the most revealing statistic is not the one at the top of the scorecard.

It's assumed the impending free agent will be traded away as Detroit, where the 29-year-old made his debut in 2020 and has won back-to-back Cy Young awards, has floundered after two promising playoff seasons. Skubal recorded his 1,000th career strikeout July 29 and was given a rousing ovation when he left as fans assumed that would be the last time he pitched in a Tigers uniform.The Rays could use a top-of-the-line starting pitcher, especially after Shane McClanahan was placed on the injured list with a recurring back injury July 31. Manager Kevin Cash still has ace Drew Rasmussen and Nick Martinez, who at 35 years old is in the midst of a career season. But adding Skubal would cement Tampa as the surefire favorite to represent the AL in the World Series, according to ESPN insider Jeff Passan, and potentially set them up for their first championship.But there are a lot of other teams vying for Skubal's services, namely the Los Angeles Dodgers, the two-time reigning champions and favorites to land every big-name player over the past decade. And the Tigers' asking price is somewhere between "enormous" and "astronomical," which traditionally has left the small-market Rays in the cold. But could Patrick Zalupski and the new ownership group change things up in Tampa? Here's what we know.Is Tarik Skubal getting traded?The Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers, owners of the best records in MLB entering August, were considered the favorites to land Skubal. Along with the Rays, other teams seen as contenders for Skubal are the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. For Tampa, their example was Ian Seymour, who has two more years before he is due for arbitration.Tampa's supply of minor-league talent might not be enough for Detroit, however, especially if, as ESPN's Jeff Passan says, the Rays are unwilling to deal 20-year-old center-field prospect Theo Gillen. "Tampa Bay isn't fundamentally opposed to trading Gillen, but doing so for a player who will be there for months as opposed to years is where aggressiveness turns into recklessness," Passan wrote.Tarik Skubal Dodgers rumorsPassan said LA was the "heavy favorite" to land Skubal, much to the chagrin of all other fanbases. Seeing as the Dodgers have added Blake Snell, Kyle Tucker, Teoscar Hernandez, Edwin Diaz, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and of course Shohei Ohtani over the past few years, it's not surprising to see them atop the list of teams rumored to be in the market for Skubal. But the Dodgers have been hesitant in declaring their level of interest considering last year's World Series-winning rotation of Yamamoto, Snell, Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow are still on the roster. On the other hand, injuries to Snell and Glasnow, not to mention Ohtani being removed from pitching duties with injury concerns of his own, lead to a potential need for a starter.Tarik Skubal Brewers rumorsThe most intriguing option for a Skubal trade, Ken Rosenthal said, was Milwaukee, which has been the National League equivalent of the Rays the past decade or so. The move would harken back to 2008, when the Brewers traded for CC Sabathia, who nearly won the NL Cy Young despite pitching in just 17 games for them.Skubal would join NL Cy Young favorite Jacob Misiorowski to form perhaps the most terrifying starting duo in the majors. Successfully stopping Gianni Infantinos FIFA plan to sell World Cup profits to private investors was the first half of a high-stakes game in global soccer politics.The second half kicked off Saturday with what seemed a clear aim of ending Infantinos decade-long presidency.No option should be off the table, said European soccer body UEFA, whose president Aleksander eferin has led the fight against Infantino in a seismic week for FIFA.The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFAs confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.Later Saturday, the governing body for North and Central American and Caribbean soccer (CONCACAF) called for accountability, saying: A (World Cup) proposal of this magnitude does not reach that stage by accident. It is a symptom of leadership that has stopped putting football first. This recent unilateral and egregious act of poor governance and leadership follows a pattern of missteps and similar behavior. A full review of this leadership must now take place.Infantino had proposed creating a $20 billion company to run the World Cup with private investors but drew backlash that grew every day since Tuesdays announcement.Infantino was forced to scrap the plan early Saturday after his senior adviser who sat on a White House panel resigned and Asias soccer body joined Europe and North America in opposing it.UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, issued its blistering statement hours after FIFA announced it was withdrawing its private equity plan.We cannot keep going on like this with secret schemes on fast-track timescales, cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game, UEFA said. Not only must this project not go ahead but the time has now come for football political leaders to ask themselves the right questions and make the right decisions.Infantino had proposed spinning off FIFAs commercial businesses including World Cups and Club World Cups for men and women into a $20 billion subsidiary with 20% owned by private investors.The anchor investor, described by FIFA, is a New York-based investment firm launched by Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of U.S. President Donald Trumps son-in-law, Jared Kushner.This is not Infantinos first big plan to flopA tumultuous week in international soccer is at least the third time Infantino has rocked it with an ambitious plan many in the sport saw as reckless.But the fallout from FIFAs Kushner-backed plan is the first time UEFA has acted quickly to create momentum for removing the man who was its former long-time employee.In 2018, Infantino pushed a secretive offer of $25 billion from Japans SoftBank to create new competitions, that posed a long-term risk to continental events for clubs and national teams.In 2021, Infantino proposed playing World Cups every two years instead of four an idea that also angered the International Olympic Committee where he is an elected member.Both plans created big rifts in the sport and were eventually dropped by FIFA.Despite the turmoil, Infantino was re-elected unopposed in 2019 and 2023.The third time shapes to be different.Here is the calendar for the FIFA presidencyNov. 18 is the deadline for candidates to enter the next presidential contest, exactly four months ahead of the vote in Rabat, Morocco, where FIFA has its African headquarters.FIFA statutes allow Infantino one more four-year term in office. The failed spinoff venture seemed like a way to create a commissioner-like role for Infantino beyond 2031, likely paying much more than his current annual salary and a bonus deal of more than $6 million.It would take 106 votes to ensure a majority in a contested election. Continents surely do not vote uniformly en bloc, but most of Europes 55, plus Asias 46 and CONCACAFs 35 FIFA members would be a solid base.The Qatar FA issued a statement in support of Infantino on Saturday.Its president, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, said: We welcome FIFA President Gianni Infantinos decision to withdraw the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal in the interest of the global football community.While the proposal had merit, we applaud the wisdom behind prioritizing unity among Member Associations.
