Late last week, a U.S District Court Judge ruled that all college athletes from the 2022 class who had completed their four years of eligibility would be given a fifth year under the new NCAA guidelines that give every player five years to participate. The ruling shook up the college sports world, giving another season to a long list of potential players. Kentucky football could be a beneficiary with word that former linebacker Alex Afari could be seeking a return to Lexington.On3's Pete Nakos reports that Afari is exploring a return to college football. Afari's brother is the source of that information, and not Afari himself.Afari spent all four of his college years at Kentucky, and quickly became one of their most important linebackers. Over the course of his career, he recorded 193 tackles, 26.5 tackles for a loss, 6 sacks, and 3 passes defended. He went unselected in this year's NFL draft, but did participate in the Green Bay Packers camp this summer.The Wildcats have some talent at linebacker, but their expected starters are young and lack experience. Afari would not only bring SEC and big game experience to the unit, but he is a playmaker who would make the whole defense better. Taysom Hill won't be back with the Saints in 2026, but the versatile tight end could wind up reuniting with a former coach. Broncos head coach Sean Payton told Steve Wyche and Cynthia Frelund of NFL Media that the team will explore bringing in Hill. Hill saw his first NFL action while playing for Payton in New Orleans in 2017 and would go on to see time as a tight end, quarterback, kick returner and various other offensive roles during their time together. Hill remained with the Saints after Payton left following the 2021 season, but said last week that "returning to New Orleans is not in the cards" this year. Given the history between Hill and Payton, the Broncos were seen as a possible next stop for Hill and that possibility feels a little more likely with the team set to consider the move.

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring right-handed reliever Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees in hopes of giving their struggling bullpen a boost.Pittsburgh is sending prospects Omar Alfonso, a catcher, and Luis Cruz, an outfielder, to New York for Doval, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person told the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official.The 29-year-old Doval, an All-Star in 2023 when he served as the closer for the San Francisco Giants, provides Pittsburgh with a much-needed experienced arm as the Pirates try to hang around in the crowded race for a National League wild-card spot.Pittsburgh's bullpen has been an issue all season. The club has blown 20 saves this season, perhaps the biggest reason the Pirates entered Saturday at 55-56 despite scoring the second-most runs in the majors. His career got off to a hot start, making second-team All Pro and winning a Super Bowl by his second season. But after four productive season with Tampa, things dried up relatively quickly. He signed with the Eagles in 2024, but never ended up playing a snap for them. Then he jumped to Houston for a half season and played a full 17 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last year. In 2025, he actually finished third in the NFL in tackles with 174just behind Detroits Jack Campbell. However, he has not traditionally graded out well by PFF grade. Hes never finished a season with a grade above 57.0, struggling both in the coverage and run defense departments.This is the second linebacker the Lions have added in the last week, signing Troy Reeder just at the start of training camp. During Fridays practice, rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder suffered a leg injury and did not return. At this time we dont know the severity of that injury. White will have a chance to compete for a primary reserve role with the starting jobs likely already taken by Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, and Malcolm Rodriguez. But with his experience and strong athletic profile, theres certainly a chance he can make a run at a situational role on defense.
