Late Friday evening, a judge in Colorado made a decision that could bring significant change to college athletics, especially college football, ahead of the 2026 season.College athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and just exhausted their college eligibility this past year have been granted a class-wide preliminary injunction to play a fifth season.The ruling came from Judge Charlotte Sweeney of the U.S. Distrct Court of Colorado on Friday, July 31.With the new ruling in place, at least temporarily, a few Colorado football players from the Buffaloes' 2025 roster would be eligible to play the 2026 season. Those players are edge rusher Keaten Wade, placekicker Alejandro Mata and kickoff specialist Buck Buchanan.Adding any of those three likely would not change much with Coloroso's 2026 roster, and CU currently has only one roster spot open. Mata, however, did respond to the ruling on social media, hinting he would be interested in a return.Colorado's number one priority remains adding an experienced defensive tackle, with the program holding out hope that New Mexico State transfer Ezra Christensen wins his eligibility case.The timing of the ruling likely won't affect college football too much, considering rosters are mostly set with the season a month away. Pearsall missed time last season with a PCL injury in the same knee.Veteran receiver Christian Kirk, meanwhile, is dealing with a calf strain.That left San Francisco without much depth behind newly signed Mike Evans and second-round pick DeZhaun Stribling.Olave paydayChris Olave became the latest receiver to haul in a mega-deal, reportedly reaching a four-year extension worth up to $132 million with the New Orleans Saints.Olave has dealt with health issues including concussions and, at the end of last season, a blood clot.But the 26-year-old is coming off of a career-best season in which he totaled 100 catches, 1,163 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.Olave had been due for free agency after the season.He is one of several big-name players to agree to a big-money extension since the start of camp, with Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter (four years, $152 million) among the others.Rodgers retirementAaron Rodgers is leaving little doubt.There is zero debate that the 2026 season will be his last, the 42-year-old quarterback said after reporting to Pittsburgh Steelers camp.I thought last year might be it, Rodgers said. And then [head coach] Mike [McCarthy] got hired, and I talked to the wife and she said, You can do one more year. I said, Well, well see if it works out. And it kind of all came together.Rodgers is entering his second season with the Steelers and his 22nd overall.He spent his first 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers including 13 with McCarthy as head coach and two more with the Jets.A four-time NFL MVP, Rodgers passed for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns with seven interceptions last year, leading the Steelers to an AFC North title.

Liverpool want dramatic u-turn, new deal is on the tableLiverpool are eyeing a dramatic u-turn. A brand new contract is on the table - if the player wants it.Liverpool aren't entirely sure what their squad will look like for the season. That's a bit of a problem as we're actually only a few weeks away from it all kicking off.But things have been slow, there's no denying it. Mohamed Salah formally left at the start of the month but still hasn't been replaced, with the Reds now lacking a lot of attacking output as a result.The defence looks shaky, too. Ibrahima Konate also left the club on a free transfer and hasn't been replaced. Jeremy Jacquet will likely now start alongside Virgil van Dijk but he's still an unknown quantity.It's also undeniable that he was signed on the understand that Konate would still be at Anfield. The other experienced option, Joe Gomez, has yet again been struck by injury issues and will miss the start of the season.So will there be a new defender? A new forward? Midfield isn't any better, either, as we all wait and see what happens with Curtis Jones.Inter want to sign him and by all accounts, he's willing to move there. Jones has just one year remaining on his contract and the only reason he's still at the club is because Inter are yet to offer 40m.That's according to the Athletic, who suggest that the latest offer was 35m. Just shy of Liverpool's valuation, then, and it's holding up the deal.At the same time, Liverpool do hope things turn around. While there aren't any contract talks with Jones, the report claims that the club want to re-open them and re-sign the Scouser to a long-term contract.They'd need willingness on Jones's part for that, though, and he's been at odds with the club over a new deal. It's another frustrating situation, then, and one that doesn't have a clear answer.But it's certainly not unique in that.

They have some players of note who could be dealt, with Kevin Gausman being one of the most important.But what are the odds of Gausman actually being traded? ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan revealed the updated odds of a Gausman trade, which were fairly high at 75%.Blue Jays odds to trade Kevin Gausman revealed by ESPN"13. If it was his final outing, it wasn't a bad one.Gausman went 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, but only one run while striking out four. "Shocking. Terrible. Totally robbed," said former champion Richie Woodhall.England's Dimeji Shittu had to settle for silver at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday after a controversial defeat by India's Ankush Panghal.Shittu, 24, was docked a point in both the second and third rounds but even without that, he would not have won after more controversial decision-making."The referee has cost Shittu the contest," Woodhall said on TNT Sports. "He has been robbed. I really feel for him."It meant one of boxing's oldest talking points - how it is officiated - reared its head again. Would judging run or supported by artificial intelligence help solve this problem?What happened to Shittu?Shittu was well-placed in his final after winning the round on all five of the judges' scorecards. One punch resulted in Ankush receiving a standing count. The contest swung in the second round, however. Despite Shittu appearing to land the majority of the blows, three of the judges gave the round to Ankush. It meant when a point was harshly deducted for dipping his head low, the Englishman was trailing overall.Then when Shittu was punished for the same offence again despite hurting Ankush through the final round, the contest was effectively decided. "Do me a favour, referee," said Woodhall as the second penalty was given. "That is dreadful, absolutely dreadful," said TNT commentator Dave Farrar.Remarkably, four of the judges still gave the final round to Ankush which meant the point deductions did not even matter. NBA Todays Kendrick Perkins believes Curry should consider moving on and pursuing another opportunity.Steph needs to be planning his exit strategy from the Golden State Warriors," said Perkins on 'NBA Today'. "Think about it, over the last four years, the Warriors have been in the play-in tournament. And this year, the way that the West is stacked up, they're gonna be a play-in tournament team again. U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney granted a class-wide injunction, ruling that all high school class of 2022 athletes who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season this school year. The ruling from Sweeney, a Colorado-based judge, will be appealed by the NCAA, as it undercuts the Age-Based Eligibility Model, the so-called "five for five" rule, which was instated in June 2026 with the intention of starting with athletes who enroll in college in fall 2027. While the NCAA builds its appeal, the transfer portal will be opened in college basketball from August 3-10 for newly eligible athletes. Sweeney's ruling also has the potential to wreak havoc on rosters across the country for instance, opening the possibility that an undrafted player in an NFL training camp or NBA summer league team could decide to try to head back to college for a fifth year this upcoming season. In granting the preliminary injunction, Sweeney said the players "will suffer irreparable harm without" it. She did not sign onto the governing bodys argument that applying the new rule retroactively would create "roster chaos." But NCAA President Charlie Baker said it would in responding to the rulings while referencing a bill in Congress designed to provide the NCAA antitrust protection on the eligibility issues. "Today's rulings and the chaos they bring to college sports are exactly why it's time to pass this bill," Baker said. The Colorado ruling came hours after a Tennessee court granted Jalen Washington, who most recently played at Vanderbilt, and 18 other basketball players a fifth season of eligibility. In addition to Washington, athletes such as Donovan Dent, Cade Tyson, Xaivian Lee, and more, have entered the transfer portal with the hope this ruling sticks. In June, the NCAA approved its new eligibility model for Division I athletes that will allow five seasons of competition over a five-year period that begins with their full-time enrollment or the academic year following their 19th birthday, whichever occurs first. While the ruling in Tennessee applied to those 19 basketball players, the one in Colorado cast a wider net, granting the class certification the plaintiffs sought. It means the ruling applies to all Division I players who started their college careers in the 2022-23 season, not just a select list. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
