SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSawyers puts heartbreak behind her to claim goldJazmin Sawyers has also competed for Great Britain in bobsleigh and heptathlon [Getty Images]England's Jazmin Sawyers was finally able to put previous disappointments at major championships behind her by winning the women's long jump at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 32-year-old bounced back from serious injury to celebrate a gold medal on a night when there was a silver for England's mixed 4x400m relay team and a bronze for pole vaulter Owen Heard.Sawyers finished just outside the medals in fourth place at the previous games in Birmingham four years ago, failed to qualify for the final of the 2023 World Championships and was then forced to miss the 2024 Olympics. She had to undergo surgery after rupturing her Achilles tendon on her take-off leg and so, rather than competing in Paris ended up commentating for the BBC.But the Stoke-on-Trent born athlete put all those setbacks behind her on a memorable evening at Scotstoun with her fourth jump of 6.93m proving to be enough to claim the gold medal ahead of Nigeria's Ruth Usoro (6.87m) and Brooke BuschKuehl of Australia (6.80m)."It hasn't properly hit me how this is the thing I've been telling myself all the horrible bits are for," she said."The feeling is overwhelming. I will do the horrible bits 100 times over, I'll do it and do it and do it. This is amazing."Sawyers will now turn her attention to competing for Great Britain at the European Championships in Birmingham, which start on 10 August, but is keen to hang on to the memories Glasgow has given her."Twelve years ago almost to the day, I won a silver here in Glasgow (2014 Commonwealth Games) at my first major championships. It was a shock silver and I've held Glasgow close to my heart ever since," she added."It was the start of my career and so sensational and I had the time of my life. I take that as one of the best moments of my entire career, but when you've done that there's only one thing to do which is to upgrade."Nielsen guides England to mixed relay silverEngland overhauled Nigeria to claim the mixed 4x400m relay silver medal [Getty Images]A superb anchor leg from Lina Nielsen helped England to a silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay in Glasgow. It looked as though England could miss out on the medals altogether as they completed the final changeover with Nigeria's Ella Onojuvwevwo well in front. But Onojuvwevwo finished third as she tired down the final 100m and was reeled back in by eventual gold medallists Jamaica and England's Nielsen."We knew the Nigerians and Jamiacans would be big threats," said Nielsen."The crowd got me going for the last 70 or 80 metres - my 400 metres have really improved this year and I trusted my training."Heard upgrades to a bronze medalOwen Heard will compete at the European Championships for Team GB this month [Getty Images]Owen Heard jumped just one centimetre short of his personal best to secure a bronze medal for England in the men's pole vault. The 24-year-old finished in fifth place on his Commonwealth Games debut in 2022 but showed an impressive level of improvement as he came third with an effort of 5.70m.Gold medallist Kurtis Marschall of Australia set a new games record with 5.85m while South Africa's Kyle Rademeyer took the silver, reaching the same 5.70m mark as Heard but finishing ahead of the Englishman on countback."I was in silver then bronze then nearly cleared a PB to go back up to silver," said Heard."It was a really good standard of competition, maybe even the best standard of Commonwealth pole vault ever. Me and the boys we put on a good show."He will now make his Great Britain debut at the European Championships.Commonwealth Games daily scheduleCommonwealth Games medal table and resultsWhat are the Commonwealth Games?0 Comments 0 Shares 38 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRocket Classic 2026: Davis Riley carries lead into final round after 63 on Moving DayCameron Young's birdie putt on the 18th hole at Detroit Golf Club turned left on him, leaving him outside the final grouping on Sunday at the Rocket Classic.Young, who carried a share of the 36-hole lead after tying the course record with a 61 on Friday, sits three shots back of leader Davis Riley in Motown.Riley, who hasn't been in contention in a final round since playing in the last grouping at the year's first tournament in Hawaii where he finished T-6, has a baby due at the end of August with his wife, Alexandra. "The Riley clan's adding one and I couldn't be more excited," he said."She's growing a human and trying to get ready for all that," he added. "I'm thankful for her to go through pregnancy and probably to deal with me on tough days on the golf course is."It will be Michael Brennan and Rasmus Hjgaard going off with Riley on Sunday's final grouping (the tee times have been bumped due to inclement weather). Brennan is one back, while Hjgaard is T-3 with Young after shooting 61 of his own to tie the course record on Moving Day.Riley, who has not bogeyed since Thursday's opening round, had an incredible birdie on the par-4 17th on his way to a 7-under 63. The last hole he bogeyed at? That same 17th hole."It's been a while since I've been in this position," he said referring to the Sony Open. "This week I've just tried to like, I was just telling myself to play golf, just get lost in the enjoyment of just hitting golf shots, cancel out the noise to the best of my ability," he added. "I guess to put it into detail is just be in the process with my caddie and just enjoy that process of hitting golf shots. ... that brings out the best of me."Asked if had a song or an artist he was going to listen on his way over to the course Sunday, Riley's response evoked some laughs from reporters."We know 7 Mile, Eminem," he gaffed, issuing a correction seconds later."8 Mile, OK, there you go," he said, smiling. "I love Eminem no lyrics I can think of off the top of my head, but yeah, I do love some Eminem. I may have to blare some Eminem on the way over to the course to kind of get the mojo going around here."0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEngland win four boxing golds in Glasgow[Getty Images]England finished with four boxing gold medals after super heavyweight Damar Thomas added to wins by Sacha Hickey, Patris Mughalzai and Isaac Okoh earlier on Saturday. It meant England finished second in the boxing medal table behind India, who won seven golds. They had already equaled their record medal haul of 10 for a Commonwealth Games, but missed out on the seven golds needed to make this their most successful games. Dimeji Shittu, Chantelle Reid and Ruby White lost their finals.Thomas signed off the event by confidently beating Narender Berwal in the final fight of the competition. It feels great, he said. Words can't explain it.Hickey beat Northern Ireland's Kaci Rock and then explained how she got into boxing by playing on an Nintendo Wii in her parents' living room."I felt I was in control of the fight," she said. "I sparred with Kaci a few weeks ago and she is an amazing person, advocate for women in sport and someone I look up to."Mughalzai, who was born in Russia but learned to box in London after moving to the UK as a toddler, beat Australia's Jacob Cassar. "As soon as draw came out, I saw I had it hard. I think I have boxed all of the best kids here," said Mughalzai."Skills pay the bills."Essex's Okoh, who like Hickey and Mughalzai won by unanimous decision, came through a tough tussle with Welshman Connor Williams and said he has "two eyes" fixed on winning an Olympic title in Los Angeles in 2028."It is the dream of all amateur boxers to win an Olympic medal," he said. "We are the right route to getting there. I feel I am more than capable of doing it."White, 19, who only progressed onto the senior Great Britain programme in May, came into the final on an eight-year unbeaten run stretching back to when she was 11 years old.She was well beaten by a bigger, more experienced opponent in Indias Sakshi Chaudhary, however. And though Reid is more experienced at 28, she was also comfortably beaten by Indias Arundhati Choudhary.Commonwealth Games daily scheduleCommonwealth Games medal table and resultsWhat are the Commonwealth Games?0 Comments 0 Shares 56 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOshoala revives Nigeria's Wafcon and World Cup bidFormer Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala (left) is a six-time African women's player of the year [Backpage Pix]Nigeria revived their hopes of reaching the 2027 Women's World Cup with a nervy 1-0 win over Zambia at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, despite having a player sent off late in the first half. This edition of the continental tournament in Morocco doubles up as a qualifier for next year's global showpiece, with all four Wafcon semi-finalists booking a ticket to Brazil and the losing quarter-finalists having a chance to enter inter-confederation play-offs.Nigeria headed into Saturday's Group C clash with the Copper Queens on the brink of an early exit after falling to a shock 3-2 defeat against debutants Malawi in their opener on Tuesday. The West Africans made a good start when forward Asisat Oshoala put them ahead in the eighth minute when the ball bobbled in off her right thigh after her initial attempt was saved by Zambia goalkeeper Hazel Nali. But the 10-time Wafcon winners and defending champions had Oluwatosin Demehin sent off five minutes before the break at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat following a video assistant referee review. The centre-back had hauled down Zambia striker Barbra Banda, and referee Josphine Wanjiku upgraded her initial yellow card after deciding Demehin was the last defender - even though replays showed Nigeria team-mate Rofiat Imuran appeared to be in a covering position.Zambia failed to made their numerical advantage pay, although Racheal Kundananji threatened when her long-range free-kick was tipped behind by Nigeria keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.Banda, once Africa's most expensive female player, was subdued after the break and Nigeria survived a late scare when Grace Chanda volleyed high over the bar deep in stoppage time. The Super Falcons have been ever-presents at the Women's World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals in 1999 and progressing to the last 16 at the past two editions, and are once again indebted to six-time African player of the year Oshoala.Nigeria move level with Zambia on three points in Group C with both sides trailing surprise package Malawi, who have maximum points after beating Egypt 3-1 earlier on Saturday. The Super Falcons face Egypt and Zambia take on Malawi in the final round of group matches on Wednesday.Elsewhere at Wafcon 2026, hosts Morocco have already booked their place in the last eight with a game to spare but South Africa are in danger of missing the Women's World Cup after picking up just one point from their opening two matches in Group B.The 2022 Wafcon champions, who have featured in the past two editions of the World Cup, must beat Burkina Faso and hope Ivory Coast defeat Tanzania in the final group matches on Tuesday to survive.'Every country wants to beat Nigeria' - Super Falcons hunt 11th Wafcon titleAll you need to know about Wafcon 20260 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCardinals place DT Mustipher on IR, make claimCHARLOTTE, NC - AUGUST 25: Detroit Lions defensive lineman Brodric Martin (98) during a preseason NFL football game between the Detroit Lions and the Carolina Panthers on August 25, 2023, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. (Photo by John Byrum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesThe Arizona Cardinals placed another player on IR on Saturday, the second player in two days. The day before, CB Jaden Davis landed on the list. Another defensive player, DT P.J. Mustipher, was placed on IR after a severe foot injury during the Cardinals first padded practice of training camp. Because of the timing of the transaction, Mustipher will completely miss the regular season. RELATED: TRAINING CAMP DT OUTLOOKIn a corresponding move, the team announced they signed former Detroit Lions DT Brodric Martin (6-5, 330 pounds).Martin was selected in Round 3 of the 2023 NFL draft after a very good career at Western Kentucky. In two seasons, he played in 28 games with 62 total tackles, 4 sacks, 6 tackles for loss, 3 batted passes, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 forced fumble. Originally, he began his college career at Northern Alabama, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic before transferring to Western Kentucky. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexans have a scary moment at practice with hit on DB Derek Stingley Jr.A scary situation turned out to be nothing more than just a quiet moment for the Houston Texans on Saturday afternoon. With fans in attendance for the first time this training camp, All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley took a hit during team drills after colliding with linebacker Henry To'oTo'o. Stingley lay on the ground for several seconds while being attended by trainers for help. Eventually, he was able to walk off on his own power."Yeah, 'Sting' is fine," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said after practice.Houston could survive without Stingley for a game or two, largely because of the development of Pro Bowler Kamari Lassiter. In two seasons, Lassiter has gone from being an overthought draft prospect to perhaps the best No. 2 cornerback in the league, with some believing his ceiling is among All-Pro potential. Big collision sent Derek Stingley to the groundLooked brutal but he got up & walked off after about 30 seconds pic.twitter.com/GSZxdNmEdM Nico (@elitetakes_) August 1, 2026He comes in every single day. He's the same person," defensive back Calen Bullock said Saturday. "Very consistent. Year in, year out, he shows why he's one of the best corners. And he shows it by his game."Of course, what made the Texans' secondary among the league's best last season was the consistent play of both Stingley and Lassiter. Over his career dating back to LSU, the two-time All-Pro has dealt with injuries that sidelined him for multiple series or games. The good news is Stingley returned to the field before the end of practice and should be cleared for full contact down the line. Hopefully, Saturday is nothing more than just a quiet mishap as the Texans look to avoid injuries early in the season.Houston returns to practice on Monday. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBills avoid huge injury scare after safety was carted off fieldBills avoid huge injury scare after safety was carted off field originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Like many teams in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills are currently holding their training camp so that players can get reacclimated to playing, learn new playbooks, and just gel with their teammates ahead of the pre-season slate and regular season course of games roll around. But the team would face quite the scare on Saturday afternoon, when their safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson had been carted off the training field due to a leg injury. This injury could have some major implications for the Bills' defensive structure, given that Gardner-Johnson is one of three safeties, with the other two being Cole Bishop and the recently acquired UFL star D.J. Miller, but it's safe to say the aforementioned Super Bowl champion has the most experience, having made 87 career appearances over his seven-year career. But luckily enough for Buffalo, it appears that their veteran defender missed out on anything too damaging.Gardner-Johnson avoids any major damageTests revealed that Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was carted to the locker room during Saturdays practice, suffered a lower calf strain, per source. pic.twitter.com/oJIwjdZFBS Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 1, 2026As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gardner-Johnson appeared to have suffered from a lower calf strain, with the result coming after tests were run on the 28-year-old. While some strains can come in differing grades, which can address the severity of the injury, there doesn't appear to be any further information at this time.If there's one thing to consider about the timing of the injury, the Bills' regular season kicks off in over a month, with their season-opener against the Houston Texans falling on September 13, meaning Gardner-Johnson will have some significant time to recover from his injury suffered on Saturday afternoon. It will certainly be a bump in the road for Buffalo's chapter in the 28-year-old's career, having signed with the team on a one-year contract earlier in the offseason. It will definitely be a storyline to keep an eye on as the Bills' preseason continues.More NFL news:A.J.
