JENNERSTOWN A duo of Somerset County drivers earned wins, while two other competitors saw victory lane for the first time in years, Saturday, Aug. 1 at Jennerstown Speedway.The night kicked off with a dandy in the Somerset Trust Fast 4s. Bradley Marsh raced between the leaders and took the advantage at the green flag. He led the first five laps of the 15-lap feature, but Seth Nedrow dashed past Marsh for the lead with nine to go.The two battled, sometimes door-to-door, down the stretch. A week after suffering a bad crash right before taking the checkered flag, Nedrow exacted some revenge with his third win of the season. Burkholder finished second and Carley Awtey grabbed third.For the second straight week and fourth time this season, Boswell's Doug Glessner visited victory lane in the Stoystown Auto Wreckers Modified division.Gleasner passed Anthony Aiello just eight laps into the 20-lap, seven-car feature. Glessner has won four of the last five in the division, narrowing the points gap between him, Aiello and division leader, John Fama, who finished third.Mike Sweeney won for the second time this season in a thrilling Martella's Pharmacies Late Model 30-lap feature.Jenners driver Barry Awtey passed Will Hemminger two laps into the race and had a significant lead. In the latter stages of the race, things tightened in a hurry. Awtey, veteran Garry Wiltrout and Sweeney were three wide at the stripe with seven to go. Two laps later, Sweeney worked below Awtey and found himself leading the pack.Wiltrout and Awtey finished second and third, respectively.Defending Ron's Collison Center Street Stock champ, Casey Fleegle cruised to his third win of the season.The Friedens driver started on the front row and was no match for the six-car field. Fleegle has the most wins in the division, despite entering the night in fifth place.Rick Meehleib finished second and Teddy Gibala took third.In just his second One Stop Auto Sales Pro Stock feature of the season, Jeff Giles collected a win. Following an opening night crash in his modified, Giles has since moved back to the Pro Stock division, where he last won in during the 2023 season. Giles checked out from the field early and held a lead of five seconds before a competition caution was called with just seven laps remaining in the 20-lap feature. Giles once again put distance between himself and the challengers to notch the win.Todd Price and Kyle Burkholder took second and third, respectively.Bill Awtey Tribute Night is slated for Saturday, Aug. 8. During this time, the football team only missed making the playoff three of the 30 years.Under Godfreys leadership, Southwest DeKalb earned the 1995 1995 GHSA AAAA championship.Southwest DeKalb said Godfreys impact was felt on and off the field.His greatest gift was the character and integrity he instilled into men and women. He inspired us all!!Godfrey reflected on his career ahead of his induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.These Hall of Fame honors were not really a thought to me when I started coaching, he said. Jacob deGrom was not pleased Saturday with his outing, which lasted only 3 1/3 innings against the Astros. Houston beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 (Troy Taormina-Imagn Images).Jacob deGrom lasted only 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs in a 5-4 loss to the Astros, and the Texas Rangers have lost four straight games ahead of the trade deadline.HOUSTON On the day he reached 10 years of MLB service time, a benchmark all players strive to reach, Brandon Nimmo told his Texas Rangers teammates that hes playing for more.Not more seasons, though those will come, but more playoff opportunities, including the one that has somehow presented itself this season. Nimmo will celebrate 10 years later, he said, hopefully with champagne after the Rangers clinch a playoff spot.Of more immediate concern is winning ballgames and the trade deadline. Nimmo said he was worried about that, wondering how everything is going to shake out across the league and on his own team.He cant control what happens between now and Monday. He can control some of what happens on the field, and things arent going particularly well for the Rangers and his longtime baseball buddy Jacob deGrom.The same goes for Nathan Eovaldi, and that is trouble for the Rangers playoff hopes.A night after Eovaldi allowed six runs in a series-opening loss to the Astros, deGrom allowed five in only 3 2/3 innings in another loss, 5-4. The Rangers have lost four straight games to fall back below .500 and 1 1/2 games behind the Astros in the American League West.Rangers manager Skip Schumaker has said that neither starter is pitching at full strength. The trade deadline is at 5 p.m. Monday. The Rangers have already added to the bullpen via a Wednesday trade with the Angels, and they would like to add a right-handed hitting outfielder.If the Rangers suddenly feel like they cant rely on Eovaldi and deGrom to stay healthy and pitch effectively, a starting pitcher might be a consideration for the front office. Manager Skip Schumaker isnt there yet. I think there are guys that we have internally that will give us a shot, Schumaker said. I know its post-All-Star break, and I know its the trade deadline. I totally understand. Its August. There still a lot of games, though. If I hadnt seen this team make a run before, the I wouldnt think it could happen. But Ive seen it, and that was without some of our guys being fully healthy.No player is fully healthy at this time of the season. All active players are dealing with some kind of ailment that requires maintenance but isnt bad enough to land on the injured list. Eovaldi and deGrom, though, are the aces of a starting rotation that was supposed to be the Rangers strength.The Rangers lined up Eovaldi and deGrom for the Astros series, knowing its importance on the division race and potentially how the series might shape the front offices thinking on making further additions. It might have, just not in the way they were hoping.Instead, its not unreasonable for the Rangers to be concerned about Eovaldis left knee and deGroms left hip/glute. The Rangers will have difficulty clinching the division or advancing in the postseason if their aces arent sharp, leaving the front office to possibly add a starter or sit out the rest of the trading period. Neither deGrom nor Eovaldi used his malady as an excuse. Schumaker, pitching coach Jordan Tiegs and athletic trainer Matt Lucero visited deGrom in the third inning after his left foot twisted as he moved toward a ball in play, but he stay in the game. The problem, deGrom said, was that he couldnt throw his slider for a strike and was relegated to being a one-pitch pitcher. His fastball was clocked as fast as 101 mph, a sign that his mechanics were dialed in. He just didnt rise to the occasion.I didnt make pitches when I needed to, so it was just a bad job by me, deGrom said. Ive had to say that too many times this year. Thats on me. We lost this game because I wasnt able to go out there and execute and make pitches when I needed to.He expects to make his next start, Friday against the Orioles. As was the case before the All-Star break, deGrom said that the hip/glute issue is managable. He will continue to search for a fix to issue with executing pitches.He tossed a scoreless first inning before surrendering a run in the second. Wyatt Langford homered in the third to tie the game, but the Astros struck for two in there half of the inning. The Rangers again tied the game in the fourth on an Alejandro Osuna RBI single and a safety squeeze by Elias Diaz.But deGrom recorded only on more out and left after Christian Walkers grounder to first base was defected by a diving Joc Pederson for an infield hit. That made it 4-3, and the Astros added another on a close play at the plate after a Cole Winn wild pitch.Diaz homered in the sixth, but some missed chances earlier came back to haunt the Rangers. DeGrom is haunted by his outing, which included five walks.We needed to win todays game, he said. That was the bottom line, and I needed to come in and put us in a position to do that.The Rangers have already added ahead of the deadline, acquiring right-handed reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan OHoppe on Wednesday from the Angels. They want to add a right-handed-hitting outfielder, which they could have used Saturday night.If they are thinking about supplementing the rotation, the Rangers would likely have to part with multiple prospect and pony up on the financial end. President of baseball operations Chris Young said the Rangers are open to upgrading the team in a variety of ways.They are presumed to be out on Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, but Detroit might also part with right-hander Casey Mize. The Angels have right-hander Jose Soriano, who was scratched from his start Saturday, and left-hander Reid Detmers. They would both come with contractual control.Mets righty Freddy Peralta is a high-end rental, something that might turn off the Rangers.The players cant control what the front office does before the trade deadline. They can control what happens on the field, and Eovaldi and deGrom need to be better.Just a terrible job by me, deGrom said. Entering Saturday, only one owned a lower mark since that date, a stretch in which the Astros were tied for the best record in the American League.Extending their newfound lead in the AL West hinged on that unit again Saturday evening. Five relievers combined to throw 4 innings of one-run ball as the Astros secured a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers, moved 1 games up in the division and ensured they will finish this series between in-state rivals alone in first place.Houston has won 10 of its last 11 games and is 57-55, a timely push two days before the trade deadline. Outfield offense and pitching are its two priorities, in that order. Contributions from those areas on the current roster buoyed a fifth consecutive victory Saturday, matching the club's longest winning streak of the season.CARLOS CORREA:Third baseman won't rule out a return this seasonLaMonte Wade Jr. and Taylor Trammell, two of the Astros' left-handed hitting outfielders, drove in three of the five runs they scored against Rangers starter Jacob deGrom. With a 5-3 lead, the Astros turned to their bullpen with two outs in the fifth inning, lifting starter Ronel Blanco with a runner on and starting a series of maneuvers.Bennett Sousa notched one out, finishing the fifth. Enyel De Los Santos recorded two around allowing a home run to Elias Daz that pared the Astros' lead to one. Four left-handed hitters occupied the top five spots in Texas' order. As that lineup turned over, the Astros deployed left-hander Steven Okert with two outs in the sixth.Texas lifted leadoff man Joc Pederson, its home run leader, for right-handed Jake Burger. Okert won the matchup, inducing a flyout, and returned for a scoreless seventh, working around a two-out single from Brandon Nimmo. Okert owns a 2.14 ERA in a team-high 54 appearances, a critical piece in the bullpen's resurgence.Bryan Abreu drew the eighth and the 6-7-8 spots in the lineup. He retired them in order, another step in the right-hander's return to leverage usage. The Astros drove up his pitch count with determined at-bats. In his 3 1/3 innings, deGrom allowed seven hits and five walks. His defense also played a role in the five runs charged to him.Four batters saw 22 pitches from deGrom in a scoreless first inning. He threw another 22 in the second, when a walk and two-out singles by Cam Smith and Wade, hitting in the bottom two spots in Houston's order, produced the game's first run.Alvarez led off the third with a double. DeGrom issued a one-out walk to Christian Walker but induced a popup from Yainer Diaz with a sinker, his least-used pitch. A trainer jogged to the mound to see deGrom after the at-bat. He was reportedly limited earlier this month by a hip issue.ROTATION:How Astros' set pitching for finaleDeGrom stayed in the game. Jose Altuve, who had drawn his first walk since July 5 in the second inning, worked another in an eight-pitch battle, in which deGrom hit 100.5 mph, matching his fastest pitch this season. Trammell then chopped a first-pitch slider into left field for a two-run single.Texas forged a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth. DeGrom could not preserve it. Jeremy Pea struck a one-out double, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. The Rangers walked Alvarez intentionally and Isaac Paredes drew a walk to load the bases. Walker, after falling behind 1-2, poked the seventh pitch of his at-bat toward first base.Joc Pederson, stashed there so Texas could stack left-handed hitters, dived for the ball, knocked it down but could not recover it. Walker's infield hit scored a run and chased deGrom after 91 pitches. Alvarez's scoring on a wild pitch by Cole Winn charged a final run to deGrom's ledger.How Ronel Blanco faredThree starts into his return from Tommy John surgery, it appears Blanco is still somewhat limited, or the Astros still have a quick hook for him later in outings. Blanco has not surpassed 86 pitches in an outing since his return. He threw 82 pitches over his 4 2/3 innings on Saturday and, with a 5-3 lead, the Astros already had a reliever up as he started the fifth.Blanco was efficient early. He navigated two singles a scoreless first inning and struck out two batters in the second. Langford lined a full-count slider into the first row of the Crawford Boxes in the third inning for the Rangers' first run. It was the fifth home run Blanco has allowed in three starts. He finished the inning at just 46 pitches.After the Astros staked him a 3-1 lead, however, Blanco could not deliver a shutdown fourth. Brandon Nimmo struck a leadoff single. Blanco then walked Evan Carter. Both runners would score. Alejandro Osuna pulled a one-out RBI single through the right side of the infield. Elias Daz dropped a squeeze bunt to Blanco, who secured the out at first.Blanco retired his first two batters in the fifth. But a walk to Corey Seager, starting a run of left-handed hitters, ended his evening. Sousa replaced Blanco and issued two walks, loading the bases, before he struck out Ezequiel Duran to preserve a two-run lead. Blanco allowed five hits and an 83.4 mph average exit velocity on 15 balls in play. His ERA in three starts is 7.36.How Yordan Alvarez faredAlvarez, who entered the day leading the American League in all three Triple Crown categories, reached base three times in five plate appearances, via a double and two intentional walks.Alvarez has been walked intentionally 22 times this season, most in the majors. The Seattle Mariners dealt right-hander Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox for a three-player package including reliever Seranthony Dominguez, the club announced Saturday night.Seattle pulled from its deep pool of starting pitching to acquire bullpen help, along with outfielder Nolan Jones and catching prospect Boston Smith. ESPNs Jeff Passan was first with the news.Castillo was Seattles prized trade deadline acquisition in 2022, helping push the Mariners into their first postseason since 2001. In 126 career appearances with Seattle, the three-time All-Star went 43-40 with a 3.69 earned run average, striking out 719 batters across 718 innings.In 2026, he was just 3-9 with a 5.06 earned run average across 20 appearances.The Rock has been an integral part of this era of our organizations history, Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said. His arrival, and subsequent performance in 2022 set the tone for what has been a fantastic run as a Mariner.We all appreciate everything he has done in Seattle and wish him continued success in all he does.The White Sox will absorb all the remaining money on Castillos existing deal, per ESPN, which pays him a pro-rated portion of this years $22.75 million deal and $22.75 million in 2027. CINCINNATI (AP) Braxton Ashcraft gave up two hits over five innings, while a pair of bases-loaded walks during a three-run third helped the Pittsburgh Pirates snap a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. Steady rain was falling in the third inning when Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott issued four walks including two with the bases loaded to Brandon Lowe and Esmerlyn Valdez to help the Pirates take a 2-0 lead.The game was delayed one hour and 46 minutes by rain during the sixth inning. Abbott threw 43 pitches in the third. Following his walk to Reynolds, Abbott had the grounds crew apply drying compound to the mound. His foot slipped on two of his deliveries to Valdez. Abbott (5-7) allowed three earned runs on three hits with five walks and one strikeout on 98 pitches. Ashcraft (11-4) retired the first eight batters and didn't allow a hit until Nathaniel Lowe's single with one out in the fourth. Reds catcher Jose Trevino hit his fourth home run of the season to make the score 3-1 in the fifth.
