WNBA Reporter Details Weird Atmosphere Around Indiana Fever Game Amid Rally
Indiana Fever vs. Portland Fire - 2026 WNBA regular season Imagn ImagesSophie Cunninghams comments on transgender athletes have placed an even larger spotlight on the Indiana Fever. According to WNBA analyst Trysta Krick, the atmosphere surrounding Cunningham, her team, and her fans has taken on a different vibe.Writing a four-part post on Threads, Krick relayed her observations from the Fevers Friday night matchup against the Portland Fire, which took place at Moda Center.I went to the Fever game last night along with the pro Sophie anti trans women in sports rally. Heres how the vibe was. 1. Weird. Everyone around was tense and you could tell even though the coaches were prepped for the questions they were nervous and frustrated that this was going to be the main pre game topic. 2. Sophie was combative and when she left the 5 minute if that pregame media session she said sarcastically enjoy BASKETBALL tonight guys. Thank you for the BASKETBALL questions'View on ThreadsKrick added that Caitlin Clark was not available for both the pre-game and post-game media sessions, and that each Fever participant in these sessions was only allowed five minutes max to speak. In the final part of her Threads post, Krick described the crowd that gathered outside Moda Center. The crowd outside was media trained and a group of sports fans. They said they were the same group in Seattle that organized last game and will go to Minnesota. There was probably 2 dozen women that were part of this well funded group. They wore matching screen printed XX/XY tee shirts and had carbon copy signs that they all were holding. They told me they look the same because we made them all together.Fan rallies in support of Cunningham began earlier this week prior to the Fever-Storm game. Controversy ensued in Seattle when Storm owner Celeste Keaton allegedly berated two fans holding pro-Cunningham signs, leading the WNBA to suspend her from attending five home games.Everyone Has a Right to Peacefully Assemble: Cheryl Reeve Comments on Planned Fan Rally Ahead of Fever-Lynx GameReports suggest that another rally is planned ahead of the Fever-Lynx game on Sunday. During a media availability on Saturday, Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve was asked to give her thoughts on the matter.Reeve, whose team is at the top of the WNBA standings, said that the participants in these rallies are well within their rights to voice their views.I dont think we should feel like our safe space is being threatened. Thats what I enjoy about the WNBA, and I think we need to continue to safeguard that. I dont think these demonstrators are not peaceful. Not that Ive seen all of it, I havent heard everything thats happening. But everyone has a right to peacefully assemble. Thats whether you agree with them or not.Reeve added that, in her view, the narrative that transgender athletes are the biggest problem in womens sports is problematic.READ MORE:My Girl Was on That Seat Like Shes the Coach: Fever Fans Rave Over Caitlin Clarks Leadership as Bench Interaction Goes ViralFans Rally Behind Sophie Cunningham Holding Up L Sign to Silence Hostile Portland CrowdCollege Sports Network has you covered with the latest news, analysis, insights, and trending stories in college football, mens college basketball, womens college basketball, and college baseball!

Dodgers land Cy Young ace Tarik Skubal in a blockbuster deadline deal
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired the biggest prize on the trade deadline market, getting two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. The two-time defending World Series champions added another big piece to their-star high-priced roster that already big-name players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Mookie Betts. The Dodgers are in first place in the NL West and were already the favorites to become the first team to three-peat since the New York Yankees from 1998-2000 before adding Skubal. ESPN first reported the deal and said the Tigers would receive three minor league prospects in right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith and outfielder Zyhir Hope. The deal was agreed to during the Tigers win over the As on Saturday night that moved them within 2 1/2 games of the final wild-card spot in the American League. But it wasnt enough for them to keep Skubal. Skubal is eligible for free agency after the World Series. He has a $32 million salary, a record total in arbitration, after the team offered $19 million, and is expected to sign a massive contract in the offseason. The 29-year-old lefty said in July that it was his preference to finish the season with the Tigers to compete for a World Series championship, which has eluded the franchise since 1984.Detroit planned to contend again this season, bolstering the Skubal-led rotation by giving two-time All-Star pitcher Framber Valdez a $115 million, three-year contract in free agency and retaining three-time All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres with a $22 million deal. The Tigers, though, got off to a rough start and slumped to 16 games under .500 with about 100 games remaining. They bounced back in June and most of July to get into playoff contention with Skubal leading a rotation and three All-Stars in the lineup: rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle, catcher Dillon Dingler and outfielder Riley Greene. With a chance to possibly persuade management to keep Skubal by improving its playoff positioning, Detroit lost ground by dropping four of its last five games at home, including Skubals last start that was made even more memorable by a late-inning collapse. The Tigers led Baltimore 7-0 after six innings Wednesday and lost 10-9 in 12 innings. Skubal started the game, recorded his 1,000th career strikeout and was cheered at every opportunity by a crowd of 34,406. Skubal is 7-5 this season with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings. He is 61-42 with a 3.04 ERA over seven seasons, all in Detroit. In two postseasons, Skubal is 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA in six starts.Skubal had a minimally invasive surgery on May 6 to remove a loose body from his pitching elbow and returned to pitch on June 13.The way the surgery went is exactly how it was supposed to go, he said in July. ___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Bayern Munich U-19 season preview: Friendlies, transfers, start of season, goals and more
29 May 2024, Bavaria, Munich: The FC Bayern Munich logo can be seen at the Sbener Strae office. FC Bayern is reportedly close to signing coach Vincent Kompany. Photo: Sven Hoppe/dpa (Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images)Last seasons Bayern Munich U-17s head coach Leonard Haas has moved up to the U-19s and brings most of the U-17s with him. This group of players will look to improve not only on their finish in the 2025/26 season, disappointingly ending the U-17 season in the Round of 16, but also hoping to improve on what the U-19s did in the 2025/26 season. The U-19s also got knocked out in the Round of 16, but furthermore were knocked out in the group stages of the UEFA Youth League (essentially, the youth Champions League) and the first round of the Youth Cup. When it comes to results, the season could not have gone much worse. Dante will lead the team into the Youth League, but Haas will be in charge to make sure the team does better in the other two competitions Bayerns official website provides a good look at what lies ahead, before the season even truly begin, starting with a review of the coaching staff:The new season brings somechanges to the coaching staff: The previous U17 coaching trio of head coach Leonhard Haas and assistants Stefan Meiner and Florian Mayer have moved up to the U19 team. The lads were really keen to get going again, Haas explained after the first two training sessions at the campus. The break had done the players good, allowing them to mentally unwind and gain some perspective. The past few weeks were also valuable for the coaching staff: After the season, its not just a chance to catch our breath, but also to reflect on the past months and identify what we need to work on. This sport is always about change.Preseason scheduleNaturally, preseason is filled with a lot of intensive training and multiple friendlies. The Bavarians have schedule 4 friendlies thus far, as well as two tournaments in the Bundesliga Cup and the Red&Gold Global Trophy tournament. They will, too, go through an intensive preseason before the season official begins on August 9th:July 4 : vs FC Augsburg U-19s (6-1 win)July 8: vs Bayern World Squad (2-1 win)July 11-12.: Bundesliga CupJuly 18: vs SpVgg Unterhaching U-19s July 25.: vs Slavia Prague U-19s (3-3 draw)August 2: Youth Cup Round 1 vs RSV Eintracht 1949 StahnsdorfAugust 4-6: Red&Gold Global Trophy tournamentAugust 9: Season startFirst phase group opponentsIf one is not familiar with the format of Germanys U-17 and U-19 leagues, one can read about it here. In short, though, there are three phases to each season. The first phase consists of 12 league matches in groups of 7, with Bayern set to play against 6 opponents twice. This season, the first phase starts on August 9 and ends on the weekend around December 6th.Bayern have been drawn into Group D with these other teams:FC Ingolstadt 04SGV Freiberg FuballSpVgg UnterhachingSSV Jahn RegensburgTSV 1859+1 MunichVfB StuttgartHaas has this to say about the opponents, via Bayerns website: With Stuttgart, we have an absolutely top team in the group, whom we already know from last season as German U17 champions weve also already played against Unterhaching. Overall, its a good group with many Bavarian opponents were especially looking forward to the city derby against 1860 Munich.Full squad list, promoted playersThe transfer window is now open and one external transfer has been made in Austrian phenom Matteo Maric. This is a list of all the players currently registered for the U-19s. Of course, there is every chance new players/returning loanees will arrive over the course of preseason or even after the season has already started. Or a few of these players could be let go, loaned out or promoted to the U-23s over the course of the window. Furthermore, there are multiple players out injured that are listed as part of the squad yet cannot participate in any of the training sessions or games.Still, at the time of writing, here is the full squad list:GoalkeepersMatthias Ksters, Daniel Podar-Stiube, Luis Nadler, Jae-Won HeoDefendersRyan Moumouni, Richard Ajayi, Valentin Beckert, Jonas El Allali, Xaver Pucci, Jakob Horvath, Afrim Gashi, Adam El-Chaar, Konstantinos KarandrikasMidfielders:Erblin Osmani, Simon Schaff, Kuba Horozsczak, Matteo Maric, Leopold Schmid, Michael Matosevic, Paul Kerschberger, Roy Snip, Luca Babl, Aviel Hentcho-NsekeForwards:Chris Aaron Afanou, Philipp von Taube, Wisdom Imade, Aristide Hentcho Nseke, Frank EgwuatuAnalysisImmediately, the squad seems very balanced. There could be a need to add one more forward and move on one or two midfielders, but otherwise the squad looks strong heading into the season.FriendliesAt the time of writing, Haas men have played four friendlies.6-1 vs Augsburg2-1 vs Bayern World Squad6th place at Bundesliga Cup(I dunno what happened to the game against Unterhaching, it was not mentioned on the website).3-3 vs Sparta Prague Season goalsOf course, the main priority remains-as always-player development. But, if we look at the sporting goals for the seasonThe U-19s have lost in the first round of the Youth Cup in the last two seasons, an embarrassment for the club. Their goal is to go far and challenge for the trophy. Furthermore, the Bavarians will wish to compete for the U-19 Bundesliga title. The minimum goal is likely to reach the quarterfinals of the competition. Finally, the U-19s will lookmto qualify from the group stages of the Youth League and hopefully at least equal their best ever finish in the competition (quarterfinal exit in 2025).Join the conversation!Sign up for a user accountand get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreatecommunity postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

Arizona Cardinals 2026 opponent preview: San Francisco 49ers offseason
The Arizona Cardinals will face 14 different opponents in the 2026 regular season. They will face the San Francisco 49ers twice, as they do every year, being division rivals. They play them early in Week 3 on the road and then close out the season at home in Week 18. In the newest podcast episode, continuing with the opponent preview series, I was joined by Niners Wire lead writer Kyle Madson to chat about the 49ers. We talked about the crazy 2025 season in which the 49ers made the playoffs and won a playoff game despite surviving scores of injuries. We go into the departure of Robert Saleh to go be a head coach again and the addition of new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, and then discuss their work in free agency and the draft. Then, Madson tells me what sort of expectations the 49ers have in 2026. Arizona Cardinals OL battle has improvement in both players competing
One starting job battle that Arizona Cardinals fans are paying attention to is at right guard between third-year guard Isaiah Adams and rookie second-round pick Chase Bisontis. While most expect that Bisontis will eventually earn the job, Adams has thus far held him off.Head coach Mike LaFleur was asked about what he has seen in both. What he has seen is improvement, although both are in different stages. Adams has "been in this league for a few years now, had some ups, had some downs and some stuff in between."But what LaFleur has seen from Adams is consistency and improvement. "I just like his approach every single day in terms of trying to get better, trying to understand why, his combinations, hitting his sets," he said. "He's been a very consistent dude for us so far at right guard since OTA 1 (and) on. I think I said it the other day. I feel like I've just seen improvement every single day from him, and that's all you can ask for from these guys Like have great intent every time you come, have great play style and let's see improvement, not making those same mistakes twice."As for Bisontis, it went from disastrous to better. "In OTA one (practice No. 1), I don't know if he came off the snap count once at the right time," LaFleur said. "OTA two was probably 50%, and it's just continued to get better. That's okay. That's where he was on that day, and you can definitely see the talent. Ilove kind of hisapproach, his vibe. He's got a good look in his eyes. He's got that little Jersey passion to him, if you will, which I'vegotten to know pretty well in my two years over there."Bisontis is the greater talent. Adams has the edge early on. It is something to watch in games. As for LaFleur, "I'm pleased with where those guys are at."Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. Scouting the prospects traded to Detroit for Tarik Skubal
TULSA, OKLAHOMA - APRIL 19: Zyhir Hope #13 of the Tulsa Drillers swings the bat during a game against the Arkansas Travelers at ONEOK Field on April 19, 2026 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. (Photo by Brandon Sloter/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesOn Saturday night, just a little before midnight, Jeff Passan of ESPN broke the news that the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Dodgers were finalizing a trade for ace left-hander, Tarik Skubal. In return, the Tigers receive 21-year-old corner outfielder, Zyhir Hope, 28-year-old right-hander River Ryan, and 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Brady Smith.First reaction? This is a pretty good return, but the Dodgers managed to hold back their top couple of prospects. Thats alright, as they were loaded with top 100 prospects, but you cant call this a fleecing of their system by any means. Its just a good return in the range we expected. I wouldve preferred outfielder Mike Sirota instead of Hope, and I wouldve love to land right-handed pitching prospect Christian Zazueta rather than River Ryan or Brady Smith, but were splitting hairs to a degree. The Tigers got three talented players here, two of whom are comfortably top 100 caliber talents, with Smith as a fast-rising, but still young, pitching prospect. The main issue overall is that the two pitchers acquired have a lot to prove yet in terms of durability, and come with a lot of relief risk. Lets take a deeper look at all three players coming back to Detroit.RHP River RyanWell start with Ryan, because hes the one who can potentially help the Tigers this season. The 28-year-old was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball back in 2024, when he blew out his UCL and required Tommy John surgery. Ryan returned in 2026, but suffered a hamstring injury in April that cost him a month. He again injured the right hamstring in late June and is currently on the injured list but expected to return this season.Ryans fourseam fastball averaged 97.6 mph this season with average extension. His best fastball of the year topped out at 100.9 mph. The movement profile looks a bit pedestrian and may need some tweaking, but its been better in the past and as hes just returning from major arm surgery, he might just need some time to dial that back in. His most used secondary pitch is a power slider at 91-92 mph. He also uses a sinker, cutter, curveball, and will flash a quality changeup as well, though it isnt consistent. Ryan gets a lot of ground balls, rarely gives up homers at the Triple-A level, and throws plenty of strikes. His walk rates have been consistently solid, although its more control than high end command. The big issue, and the reason this is a particularly risky acquisition, is Ryans injury history and minimal pitching experience considering his age. A middle infielder and closer at UNC-Pembroke, the Padres drafted him in the 11th round back in 2021. The Padres scout who signed him came to work for the Dodgers, and convinced them to acquire Ryan in trade, which they quickly did. His development in the Dodgers organization was rapid as he became a notable prospect and a priority for the first time. He was quickly throwing three breaking balls that flashed plus as well as a developing changeup. However, the Dodgers were pretty careful with his in-game workload early on, and Ryan averaged about 100 innings in 2022 and 2023, with very good results. However, as they let him stretch out in his outings in 2024, Ryan had a little shoulder trouble. He made four starts for the Dodgers in 2024 with solid results, but ultimately blew out the UCL and didnt return until this spring. So, theres a ton of upside, but plenty of risk here as well. There are some who think Ryan would be better served as a closer. Others think the starting upside is high enough to stick with it. Well see how the Tigers handle him, but Ryan is undeniably quite talented. Were everything to finally break right for him, Ryan has ace potential. There are just way too many question marks to expect that much right now. OF Zyhir HopeThis 21-year-old, left-handed hitting outfielder has pretty huge secondary tools, but questions about the swing and miss have kept him in the 50 FV tier per most top public evaluators, though others like MLB Pipeline have a 55 FV on him, currently ranking him the 25th best prospect in baseball.Hope was drafted in the 11th round out of Colonial Forge High School in Virginia by the Chicago Cubs, getting roughly fifth round money to pass on his college commitment to North Carolina. The Dodgers acquired him in a trade for outfielder Michael Busch in the 2023-2024 offseason.Initially, Hope drew pretty average power grades but he quickly added a lot of muscle and batspeed, and currently draws 65-70 grades for his raw power, essentially double plus or very close to it. He has enough footspeed to play center field, but he profiles better in right field, where his strong left arm was enough to get him scouted as a pitcher as well as an outfielder in high school.Hope is currently playing his first full season at the Double-A level for the Tulsa Drillers, where he has 23 home runs in 425 plate appearances, with 18 steals, a 10.6 percent walk rate, and a 24.9 percent strikeout rate. While the Texas League can elevate home run totals, the power here is extremely legit, and Hopes short-levered swing has some natural loft that helps him cash in on his power with a lot of regularity. His swinging strike rate is just a little bit on the high side, but nothing egregious, and he makes a solid amount of contact. Hope hangs in there pretty well against left-handed pitchers, and his quick hands allow him to square up balls in all parts of the zone. The Tigers will want him to be a little more selectively aggressive as he continues to face tougher pitching, but Hope has developed quite rapidly, so the development curve is decisively headed in the right direction. You could argue for Bryce Rainer, but Hope will draw plenty of consideration as the Tigers new top prospect once Max Clark officially graduates. RHP Brady Smith The 21-year-old Smith was the Dodgers third round pick in the 2023 draft out of Grainger HS in Tennessee. He immediately blew out his UCL after the draft, got Tommy John surgery, and didnt debut until 2025, when he threw 21 innings with some control issues. This season, he dominated Low-A ball with a 37.5 percent strikeout rate with solid but unspectacular walk and home run marks allowed. He was recently promoted to the High-A level.Currently, Smiths fastball sits 93-96 mph, topping out at 98 mph with quality riding action. His best pitch is a nasty mid-80s changeup that draws tons of whiffs in the low minors and will play even better if Smiths fastball command continues to improve on the track it has this season. The changeup really falls straight off the table, and he tunnels it beautifully off the riding fourseamer. Smith presents an athletic delivery with a quick arm, which bodes well both for developing command, but also for selling the changeup. He also has some physical projection remaining. His breaking stuff is still more of a work in progress. He has a high 70s curveball that works well as an occasional strike stealer. His high-80s slider and low 90s cutter both flash above average but will need to be more consistent. Theres a lot to like here. I wouldve preferred Christian Zazueta, partly just for major league proximity, but Smith has frontline starter upside if everything goes well. More likely, he develops into a mid-rotation starter who has the weapons to handle all types of hitter. Until he proves he can hold up to a starters workload, there is still a good amount of relief risk, however. He wasnt that highly ranked coming into the season after the Tommy John surgery, but hes been shooting up national rankings as a result of his performance this season. First take at the overall value of the deal for DetroitWe all have opinions. MLB teams have far more experience and information to go on than the big prospect sites around the internet. My first takeaway here is that the Tigers did fine. At no point did I think Josue de Paula or Edgar Quintero would be available, and while I hoped for Mike Sirota for a little older prospect with a bit more disciplined game, Hope is at least as talented, and probably more so. Its just up to the Tigers to develop his approach at the plate and sand some rough edges off his game. The pitcher I wanted was Christian Zazueta, but Brady Smith really isnt that far behind in terms of talent level. Hes just more unproven from a durability standpoint, and needs to prove he can handle a starters workload. Hes pretty nasty though, and really just getting started with his development this year as hes made 21 starts and should get to 100 innings for the first time. Thats fine progress for a 21-year-old pitcher drafted from the prep ranks. River Ryan is the real wild card here, and how much the Tigers can get from him will be a big factor in how this deal is viewed a few years down the road. Ryan is extremely nasty, and while the injury history is a little scary, he came to pro ball with really minimal experience. Well just have to hope hes a late bloomer. It would be a nice surprise if the Tigers could finally keep him healthy in a starting role. I tend to expect hell eventually move to the bullpen, but he seems on track to return in weeks, and will probably slot right into the rotation for now while the club is more careful easing Jackson Jobe back into the swing of major league ball following his own Tommy John rehab. Ultimately this is a fine return for arguably the best pitcher in baseballs final months before free agency. The Brewers may well regret not going all out to match this package of talent, much like the Yankees failure to acquire Justin Verlander in 2017. Im not blown away, but the Tigers future beyond 2026 certainly looks much better with two good arms and a potential monster corner outfielder in Zyhir Hope added to the mix.

As Late Comeback Not Enough in 8-6 Loss to Tigers
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 01: Henry Bolte #33 of the Athletics trots around the bases after hitting a three-run home run against the Detroit Tigers in the bottom of the eighth inning at Sutter Health Park on August 01, 2026 in Sacramento, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe Athletics took on the Detroit Tigers, looking to even the series and force a rubber game tomorrow afternoon. The As succumbed to their fourth straight defeat, 8-6, in another game where they had a chance to win with better pitching.Perkins Struggles EarlyDetroit jumped in front immediately against As pitcher Jack Perkins. The first batter of the game, Tigers third baseman Kevin McGonigle, hit his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. Three singles brought home the visitors second run of the first inning. As Waste Early OpportunitiesThe As attempted to rally in the bottom of the first. Facing Tigers starter Framber Valdez, left fielder Tyler Soderstrom and third baseman Tommy White hit back-to-back two-out singles, only for Valdez to retire Lawrence Butler and complete a scoreless first inning. As shortstop Alika Williams led off the bottom of the second with a single and then moved to second after Henry Bolte walked. Valdez escaped a jam for the second consecutive inning, getting a nice assist from his middle infield duo, which turned a nifty double play. ohhhhhhh myyyyyyyy @TorresGleyberpic.twitter.com/llHSJ3v3UN Detroit Tigers (@tigers) August 2, 2026As Get One BackIn the third, Jacob Wilson and White hit singles, giving Butler an RBI chance with two on and two out. This time, Butler came through, lining an RBI single to bring home Wilson and cut the Tigers lead in half. Valdez rebounded by striking out Williams to preserve his teams lead and strand two runners on base.Butler breaks through pic.twitter.com/hbe690DR8o Athletics on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) August 2, 2026Meanwhile, Perkins settled down, throwing three straight scoreless innings to keep his team within striking distance.Seeking to start a game-tying rally, Bolte led off the bottom of the fourth with a ground-rule double to right. The Athletics tied the game with some hustle. First, Jonathan Ornelas beat out a bunt single, and then Wilson beat out the double-play relay throw for an RBI force out, with Bolte scoring to tie the game at two.Tigers Re-Gain AdvantageThe next inning, the Tigers immediately retook the lead, courtesy of second baseman Gleyber Torres sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to right-center against Perkins. After all the work his offense did to tie the game, it was frustrating how quickly Perkins allowed more runs, erasing his teams momentum in the process. The home run troubles continued for Perkins in the sixth inning. In his second MLB game, Tigers center fielder Max Clark hit his first-career home run, a two-run shot to put the visitors up 6-2. The As starter allowed six runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. The good of his outing (nine strikeouts) was offset by the bad (three home runs allowed). If Perkins can put it all together and limit the home runs, he can become a good starter. However, his development is clearly still a work in progress. Tigers In ControlValdez continued his dominance over the As. The left-hander allowed two runs over seven innings, most importantly throwing three scoreless innings after his team regained the lead. He struck out six and used his trademark sinker to generate ten groundouts.Detroit scored its seventh run in the seventh inning, as first baseman Spencer Torkelson hit an RBI single against As reliever Scott Blewett. White should have made that play at third base to end the inning. They made it 8-2 in the eighth, scoring a second run off Blewett for their fourth consecutive inning with a run.Bolte Blast: As Late Comeback AttemptIn the bottom of the eighth, facing Detroit reliever Kyle Finnegan, Bolte collected his third hit of the evening, a three-run home run to center field. His fourth long ball of the season cut the Tigers lead to 8-5. White also got three hits today, an encouraging sign, although the As would like to see his power emerge at some point.Following that big swing, the hosts put two more runners on base, but new reliever Jacob Waguespack prevented the As from drawing any closer. Wilsons aggressive approach hurt his team again, as he struck out chasing a pitch below the strike zone for the second out of that inning.Bolte's third hit of the night is a BIG one pic.twitter.com/iRmdQTefvH Athletics on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) August 2, 2026The Tigers brought in closer Kenley Jansen for the save opportunity, looking to win the game and the series. Soderstrom, who hit a leadoff double, scored the As sixth run on Jeff McNeils two-out RBI bunt single. That was as close as the As got. Benches clear at the end of tonight's Athletics-Tigers game after Kenley Jansen takes issue with Jeff McNeil's late bunt single pic.twitter.com/QHSHUGSnEN Athletics on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) August 2, 2026The Green and Gold finished the game with 15 hits, yet went 5-for-19 with RISP, once again wasting countless opportunities to score runs in a hitter-friendly ballpark. Additionally, the As grounded into two more double plays, increasing the total to an MLB-leading 86 twin-killers this season. The late comeback was not enough as the stretch of unanswered runs the As pitching staff allowed proved too much to overcome. The Athletics still have not won a series since their successful week playing at their Triple-A affiliates ballpark and will now try to avoid a sweep tomorrow afternoon. The series and homestand finales pitching matchup will match As rookie left-hander Gage Jump against Tigers right-hander Keider Montero. Hope the As can avoid the sweep and at least enjoy a happier flight east, but with the way they have been playing, a Sunday victory is far from guaranteed.

Walter Nolen named to All-Under-25 team
The Arizona Cardinals have high hopes for second-year defensive tackle Walter Nolen. His rookie season was limited to only six games because of injury, but he was impactful in those six games. That limited play was enough to land him on NFL.com's "All-Under-25 Team" by Nick Shook. He was paired with Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Byron Murphy II. This selection requires a bit of projection, but I'm confident it will pan out because what I saw from Nolen in just six games tells me all I need to know. Nolen was a disruptive force and an instant, significant upgrade for Arizona's defensive line as soon as he returned from injury, recording a sack and four tackles in his very first game. Nolen only appeared in six contests before his health-hampered season ended due to injury, robbing us of a true evaluation of his debut campaign, but if he can stay on the field in 2026, this selection will make much more sense to the average fan. Trust me: He's a stud. This seems to be the consensus. Multiple coaches on the Cardinals' staff have gushed about Nolen's ability. It feels like the only thing that could get in the way of a dominant career is injuries. Sadly, he left practice on Friday with what appeared to be a left knee injury. We will see if it is something that keeps him out days or weeks. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. What happened to star signings your club never made?
Striker Gift Orban was regarded as one of the hottest young talents when he was linked with a move to Tottenham in 2023 [Getty Images]Fans always get excited when the transfer window comes around.Your team is linked with a big-name signing and you start to dream they could be the ones to lead your club to glory.Tottenham fans might have felt this way a few years ago when they were strongly linked with a young, prolific striker from Nigeria by the name of Gift Orban. They had every reason, on paper at least, to be excited. In the summer of 2023, Orban, then 21, was regarded as one of the hottest prospects in the game. After scoring 16 goals in 22 games for Norwegian top-flight side Stabaek, he moved to Belgian side Gent and continued his impressive goalscoring record, netting 20 times in 22 matches. In a wild four-day period in March 2023, he scored seven goals in two matches. He got four in a 62 away league win over Zulte Waregem, becoming the first Gent player with a four-goal haul in one game in the 21st Century. He then followed up with a quick-fire hat-trick in a 41 away victory over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Conference League last 16. That hat-trick was completed within three minutes and 25 seconds, at the time a record in Uefa club competitions.Gift Orban was on loan at Verona last season and has now moved on another loan deal, this time to Turkish club Amedspor [Getty Images]With England captain Harry Kane set to join Bayern Munich later that summer, Tottenham needed a striker. Orban was even touted in the BBC Gossip Column as the club's Kane replacement. The headline of a follow-up story read: "Could Orban be a global star?"However, Spurs, with new boss Ange Postecoglou recently appointed, stalled at the 25m fee and the move collapsed. In the three years since, Orban has had four clubs, most recently joining newly-promoted Turkish top-flight side Amedspor on loan last week.He has struggled to regain his form with only three goals for Gent in 2023-24, three for French side Lyon and four for Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim, although he scored seven times in Serie A on loan at Verona last season. While his career is yet to reach the heights it once promised, other missed transfer targets have had rather different outcomes...Kaka to Manchester CityKaka collected the Ballon d'Or trophy for being the best player in the world in December 2007 [Getty Images]In January 2009, newly-rich Manchester City were looking to spend a bit of their bulging bank balance to sign Brazilian playmaker Kaka.AC Milan and Kaka's heads were turned by City's staggering 108m offer, which would have been more than double the world record transfer at the time. One City fan was so sure the deal would be done that he apparently got the playmaker's name tattooed on his chest. However, in the end, the 2007 Ballon d'Or winner decided the timing wasn't right and turned down the chance to move to Manchester.Kaka did make a world-record move later in 2009, joining Real Madrid for 56m six months later. He won the Spanish Cup in 2011 and La Liga the following year before one season back at AC Milan. He then spent three years at Major League Soccer side Orlando City before ending his playing career back in his homeland with Sao Paulo.Rivaldo to BoltonRivaldo played against Liverpool in the Champions League in 2004-05, but would have faced them in the Premier League if he had joined Bolton [Getty Images]In 2004, Bolton Wanderers were flying high, with dreams of Europe. Manager Sam Allardyce went big, with an enquiry for 32-year-old Brazilian World Cup winner Rivaldo, who had been frozen out at AC Milan.Rivaldo himself made a statement, saying: "I want the challenge of trying to get Bolton into Europe for the first time in their history. It is an exciting time."In the end, he had a change of heart and went to Greek side Olympiakos instead, where he stayed for three seasons.Bolton finished that 2004-05 campaign in sixth - tied on points with Liverpool and just three points off the top four. That earned them a place in Uefa Cup qualifying, and they went on to reach the last 32.After Olympiakos, Rivaldo had spells with AEK Athens, then in Uzbekistan and Angola before returning to Brazil.Zidane to BlackburnZinedine Zidane was already a France international by the time Blackburn wanted to sign him in 1995 [Getty Images]In 1995, Blackburn Rovers had just won the Premier League title and turned down the chance to sign a young French midfielder, Zinedine Zidane from Bordeaux. Club management urged owner Jack Walker to buy Zidane and France forward Christophe Dugarry, but Walker famously replied: "Why do we need Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?"Sherwood had lifted the Premier League trophy a few months earlier and both Zidane and Dugarry had flown to England to talk to the club but no deal was completed.Zidane and Dugarry went on to win the World Cup with France in 1998 and the European Championship two years later, with Zidane lifting two Italian titles with Juventus and then La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid.Dugarry had spells at AC Milan, Barcelona, Marseille and back at Bordeaux, although he did end his career in England with two seasons at Birmingham City.Gerrard to ChelseaSteven Gerrard helped Liverpool past Jose Mourinho's Chelsea on their way to the 2005 Champions League title [Getty Images]In 2005, just off the back of a sensational Champions League win when Liverpool fought back from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan before winning on penalties, Steven Gerrard upset the red half of Merseyside. He handed in a transfer request.Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was interested in acquiring the England midfielder's services in a potential 32m move, with Gerrard refusing to sign a new contract.Eventually Gerrard decided to stay with Liverpool, citing "family reasons". Gerrard would go on to make more than 700 appearances for the Reds and guide them to the 2007 Champions League final, although AC Milan would get their revenge.Ten years later, Mourinho said his failure to sign Gerrard was one of his greatest transfer disappointments.Mbappe to LiverpoolKylian Mbappe cost Paris St-Germain 166m when he moved from Monaco [Getty Images]France striker Kylian Mbappe is the record goalscorer in World Cups, helping his country win the 2018 competition and then scoring a hat-trick in the 2022 final as Les Bleus lost on penalties to Argentina. However, he could have been a Liverpool player in 2017 as he had talks with the Reds when still at Monaco."I talked to Liverpool because it's the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool," said Mbappe.Then-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently revealed how the club laid on a private jet and food for Mbappe and his family. However, despite his mother's favourite club being the Reds, Mbappe joined Paris St-Germain, where he won six successive Ligue 1 titles before joining Real Madrid in 2024.Griezmann to FulhamAntoine Griezmann scored 205 La Liga goals before moving to Orlando City earlier this year [Getty Images]France striker Antoine Griezmann has had a great career, but never played in the Premier League. But he nearly did, with Fulham making an unlikely 12m bid for him in January 2014 when the Cottagers were fighting to stay in the Premier League.Fulham enquired about Griezmann to his club Real Sociedad and were quoted a price of 12m. In the end, the west London side spent that figure on Olympiakos striker Kostas Mitroglou, who only played three Premier League matches, scoring no goals, before the Cottagers were relegated.Mitroglou then had loan spells back at Olympiakos and then Benfica, who he joined permanently in 2016-17.Griezmann stayed in Spain with nine seasons over two spells at Atletico Madrid and two years at Barcelona. He helped France win the World Cup in 2018.Get news, insight and fan views on your Premier League teamAll your football quizzes in one placePremier League indexPremier League tablePremier League fixtures

Most importantly, the counterpress is effective and that's thanks to the distances ACHRAF (@LamdarhriAchraf) August 1, 2026He should be going nowhere.Endrick: Touch to set himself up + finish was great. Incredible strength carrying the ball in transition. I'll tell you one thing that impresses me about him: he gives a shit. I mean that in a very complimentary way.
