'Questions will be asked': Ex-India star's message for Gautam Gambhir before Sri Lanka Tests
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta believes head coach Gautam Gambhir will be under pressure when India begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15. India have lost Test series against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa under Gambhir, and will now look to bounce back against Sri Lanka.Dasgupta said the pressure will not only be on Gambhir but also on captain Shubman Gill and the rest of the Indian team."As we are saying, two out of three series have been lost. So, there will be pressure. It is also important to say that all the names we are taking, everyone knows how to play under pressure, and they also know how to handle it. But there will be pressure on Shubman, the Indian players, and it is very, very important," Deep Dasgupta told IANSWTC StandingsPosTeamPlayedWonLostDrawDeductionPointsPCT (%)1Australia871008487.502South Africa431003675.003New Zealand641105272.224Bangladesh421102858.335India944105248.156Sri Lanka411202041.677England13481143824.368West Indies1127223022.739Pakistan5140846.67"Because they are talking about transition, it is very important to see a direction in the transition period. The transition started, let's say, after the New Zealand Test series; then came the England series and all of that. It started from there onwards. Somewhere, I feel that it is important to see a direction, and I am a little confused as to which direction we are going," he concluded.Dasgupta added that questions are bound to be asked if India's struggles continue."One thing is fair: questions will be asked of him (Gambhir). When the team does not play properly, questions will be asked individually. Obviously, the team's coach, captain, and everyone involved with the team will be asked questions because, if you look at it, we lost at home. After 2011-12, we lost the series in New Zealand, and we kept losing continuously," Deep Dasgupta said.India's chances of reaching the WTC finalDasgupta also warned that India cannot afford to take any opposition lightly, especially with difficult away assignments coming up. The Sri Lanka series could play a key role in India's hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final. India have nine Tests left in the current WTC cycle - away series in Sri Lanka - 2 Tests, away series against New Zealand - 2 Tests, home series against Australia - 5 Tests).India tour of Sri Lanka: Full scheduleDateMatchTeamsVenueTime (IST)August 7, 2026 (Friday)3-day Warm-up MatchSri Lanka XI vs IndiaNondescripts Cricket Club Ground, Colombo10:00 AMAugust 15, 2026 (Saturday)1st TestSri Lanka vs IndiaGalle International Stadium, Galle10:00 AMAugust 23, 2026 (Sunday)2nd TestSri Lanka vs IndiaSinhalese Sports Club, Colombo10:00 AM"Well, firstly, there is no easy Test series, and especially right now, looking at the Indian Test side, which is going through a transition, there is not one easy Test match, no matter what happens.""Especially in Sri Lanka. Again, Sri Lanka has been a very difficult place to tour in the past, especially in these conditions right now. So, I think it's going to be interesting when looking at the WTC. I think there are nine Test matches left: five against Australia, two against Sri Lanka, and two against New Zealand. If I'm not wrong, roughly speaking, I think seven out of nine will have to be won to qualify for the WTC final. So, that in itself is a difficult task.""On top of that, you have Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka and New Zealand in New Zealand. These are difficult assignments. On top of that, if we look at it series by series, and if we don't count Afghanistan's one-off Test, then in the last three series, we have lost two, against New Zealand and South Africa. So, that is one thing. Obviously, that's why you can't take any series or opposition lightly at this time, in any condition," he said.

Smith hungry for more after new Wrexham deal
[Getty Images]Wrexham Sam Smith believes his best is still to come after signing a new contract through to 2029.The 28-year-old has agreed fresh terms with the Championship club after proving to be a huge success since joining from Reading in January 2025.Smith has scored 17 goals in 66 games and, after helping secure League One promotion in his first campaign, was a key part in Wrexham's push for the play-offs in 2025-26."I'm becoming a better and more experienced player," he said. "I know my role and what I can bring - I can't wait for the next three years."Smith was third in Wrexham's goal chart for the Championship last season with eight strikes, behind Kieffer Moore and Josh Windass on 11 and 16 respectively. The forward believes the club's progression under Phil Parkinson has helped him thrive."The quality of players that we brought in allows me to get better service and to have people to find the runs and create the chances," said Smith, who was already under contract to 2028."The higher I've gone up through the leagues, I've found that I've tended to do better."You want to be in a team of quality players, all pushing for the same thing, which is promotion."Latest Wrexham news, analysis and fan views

England beaten by Australia to netball bronze
England played Australia in a repeat of the 2018 gold-medal match won by the Roses [PA Media]England's netballers were beaten 68-50 by world number one side Australia in their quest to win bronze at the Commonwealth Games. The day after Saturday morning's frustrating semi-final loss to New Zealand, England tried to rally themselves to get on the podium but came up against a Diamonds team recovering from one of the biggest shocks in the tournament's history.Australia - who had previously been in every Commonwealth final and won the tournament four times - were stunned by Jamaica on Saturday afternoon, giving them less time to recover for the bronze-medal match than England. The crowd responded to a lively start as great pressure from Roses captain Fran Williams led to Australia shooter Kiera Austin missing a shot with the score at 5-5, and Liv Tchine neatly slotted the ball in to open up a lead at the other end.England worked hard to shut down the Diamonds' forward-passing options, forcing them to play sideways, but the team in green and gold found their rhythm with devastating consequences, overturning a 9-7 deficit to lead 19-11 in a bruising seven-minute first-quarter spell for the Roses.Anna Stembridge's side, who lost 66-47 to the same opponents in the pool stage, then lacked impetus in the second period, showing signs of tired legs against one of the world's most established shooting partnerships in Austin and Sophie Garbin.A loose pass from Williams sent the ball straight into Australia's hands, allowing Austin to calmly extend the gap to 28-16 and her side kept the margin steady, resulting in a half-time score of 35-24.With Australia leading by 16 points in the third quarter, England rolled the dice by bringing on shooter Eleanor Cardwell for Tchine, and her presence helped the Roses score five without reply to trail 45-34 and then 49-36 with 15 minutes left to play.Bronze is not a colour of medal that Australia ever imagined they would be playing for, but what seemed just as important to them was reminding the world what they are capable of and why they have been such feared opponents. In that respect, Stacey Marinkovich's Diamonds shone as ultimate professionals, and England again came up short against a top side, losing by one less point than the pool stage match between the teams.Jamaica - who have never won netball gold at the Games - will play two-time champions New Zealand in Sunday afternoon's gold-medal match (13:00).Commonwealth Games daily scheduleCommonwealth Games medal table and resultsWhat are the Commonwealth Games?

Dowman and Tzolis impress as Arsenal sweep aside Girona in preseason friendly
Dowman and Tzolis impress as Arsenal sweep aside Girona in preseason friendlyArsenal continued their pre-season schedule in style with an impressive 4-1 victory over Girona in Catalonia, as teenage sensation Max Dowman once again underlined why excitement around the youngster continues to grow.As reported by Sky Sports, the 16-year-old produced a goal and an assist in a superb individual display, while new summer signing Christos Tzolis also marked the occasion with a goal as Mikel Artetas side eased to victory.Dowman shines once againIt took Arsenal just 16 minutes to break the deadlock, and it was Dowman who created the opener with a moment of real quality. The teenager turned brilliantly to escape his marker before threading an inch-perfect through ball into the path of Kai Havertz, who calmly finished beyond Paulo Gazzaniga to give the Gunners the lead.Dowman continued to influence proceedings throughout the opening half and almost found the net himself before Tzolis doubled Arsenals advantage on 32 minutes. The Greek winger capped an encouraging second outing with a low effort that took a slight deflection on its way into the bottom corner.Arsenal.comArsenal quickly respond to Girona setbackGirona briefly threatened to make a contest of it shortly after the restart when Arnau Martinez headed home from a corner to reduce the deficit. However, Arsenals response was immediate.Just three minutes later, Dowman restored the two-goal cushion, cutting inside onto his favoured left foot before firing a powerful effort beyond the goalkeeper from outside the area. The Gunners then effectively ended the contest moments later when a defensive mix-up allowed Gabriel Jesus to pounce on a loose ball and calmly finish to make it 4-1.Another positive step in preparationArteta made numerous changes during the second half, with several academy players given valuable minutes as Arsenal comfortably saw out the closing stages. While pre-season results should always be viewed in context, there were plenty of positives to take from the evening. Dowman continues to look like one of the brightest young talents at the club, while Tzolis made an encouraging first impression with both his performance and his goal.Attention now turns to Arsenals next friendly against Real Betis in Dublin as preparations for the new campaign continue.Who impressed you most against Girona? Who is the Commanders' biggest training camp riser of all-time?
Who is the best training camp story in the history of the Washington Commanders? The Commanders date back all the way to 1932, so there have been plenty of feel-good stories over the years. Every year, fans attach themselves to one player. Whether it's because they read the hype from local beat reporters about a player making big plays in practice, or the player having a dominant preseason. More often than not, that story ends without the player making a significant impact. Colt Brennan, Marcus Mason, Jaret Patterson and Robert Davis are just some of the names that have captivated Washington fans over the years. ESPN recently named the best training camp/preseason riser for all 32 NFL teams over the years. For the Commanders, it was easy, as John Keim picked legendary offensive tackle Joe Jacoby. He was a late addition as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville in 1981 -- and he was so low on the roster that coach Joe Gibbs initially thought he was a defensive lineman. Jacoby was the last offensive lineman added in camp, but he eventually started 13 games as a rookie (eight at left tackle). He became a fixture at left tackle over the next eight seasons before moving to the right side for the majority of his final five seasons.Jacoby started 148 games, earned three first-team All-Pro honors and made the Pro Bowl four times. The organization has long felt he belongs in the Hall of Fame, calling him the best player on the fabled "Hogs" offensive line in the 1980s and early '90s.It doesn't get any better than Jacoby. From being an undrafted free agent to starting at left tackle during the greatest era in franchise history. For years, Jacoby lined up across from some of the best players of all-time, such as Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White. Taylor has shown his respect for Jacoby over the years. Yet, somehow, the Pro Football Hall of Fame refuses to induct Jacoby. We've made our case for him multiple times over the years. Jacoby was elite at left and right tackle in his career. He was the linchpin on one of the greatest offensive line units in NFL history: the Hogs. ESPN got this one right. Guardians experience 'anxious time' as MLB trade deadline approaches
CLEVELAND The tension the MLB trade deadline creates varies for each player, manager, coach and executive, but virtually every member of the 2026 Guardians is feeling it to some degree lately. The trade deadline is 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, and the Guardians have already struck a deal.More than 12 hours before they lost 12-8 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Progressive Field, the Guardians sent catcher Bo Naylorandrelief pitcher Codi Heuer to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for relief pitcher Craig Yohoandoutfielder Blake Perkins. The Guardians (56-56, tied for second in the AL Central Division) might not be done, either.A right-handed bat is on Cleveland's wish list. It's a very active time of year, Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said. We're having a lot of conversations, and our goal is to continue to try to find a way to improve the team.We have to always be open-minded to listening to what other teams have to say, and so that's the approach we generally take. We're never going to hang up the phone on someone when they call. Now, obviously there are some players that would be much more difficult for us to consider in trades than others, but we don't just hang up on people when they call with interest.Antonetti didnt hang up on teams when a number of them called last year about Guardians two-time All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan. Cleveland wound up keeping Kwan, though. So, how are Kwans nerves this time around? After last year and how that was all handled, which was really great by the front office and the communication was great, but I feel like after quote, unquote surviving that, everything feels a little desensitized to that, Kwan told the Beacon Journal. I think last year was definitely a little uneasy, uncertain.I didn't pay a lot of attention to it, and then it started getting really real at the end of it. I think this year is a little more it's not as intense, obviously. It's different. Yeah, it's definitely a factor, but I would say for me it's a little less than what it was last year.MLB news: Guardians explain trade netting Craig Yoho, Blake Perkins from BrewersLike Kwan, Guardians first baseman Rhys Hoskins has never been traded. However, he isnt immune to feeling antsy about the trade deadline. It's always, I think, an anxious time, whether it's good anxious because you're hopeful that reinforcements may be coming or not so good, right, because maybe we're not winning like we want to and some of the guys that you've been going to war with over the last couple months are no longer going to be here, Hoskins said. I think we're in a position where hopefully we're going to be adding, so that definitely makes it better. But when additions come, subtractions also have to be made. So, yeah, it's an interesting time.Switching teams in MLB can be akin to transferring to a different branch in the corporate world. There are connections on every roster. Kwan was aware about Naylor being dealt long before the public knew because theyre close friends. Hoskins previously had YohoandPerkins as teammates when he played for the Brewers the past two years.Still, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt explained the cold, hard business of baseball has not made him numb to its transactional nature. Vogt pointed out he called Naylor and Heuer to thank them for their time with Clevelands organization. During his playing days, Vogt was traded. You don't get used to the business side of this game, Vogt said. It hurts every time [when someone is traded]. It's all about the human element. And, yeah, business is business, and personal is personal. Business isn't personal, but it doesn't always feel that way. So, we talk with our guys. We wish Bo and Codi really well. We hope that their careers take off. But, yeah, it's all about the people. It's all about the players.Kwan said he is happy for Naylor, whom the Guardians optioned to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers on May 9 when they acquired catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Fransico Giants. He obviously deserves a chance somewhere else, Kwan said. I think a fresh start could be really good. I think it's a good thing. It's always good to be wanted by other people. So, I know he's going to do really well there. I think the Brewers could use someone like him, so it's really, really exciting for him to go.MLB news: Guardians score vs. Diamondbacks. How Cleveland rallied yet lostOn the other hand, Hoskins sees potential in the players he will welcome into the Guardians clubhouse.Yoho's got the outlier changeup that's really nasty, Hoskins said. And I kind of feel the same way about here that I do Milwaukee that anytime I think our guys here in the front office see something in someone, it's usually a good thing. I usually feel like they can help us in some way. So, I'm excited for him. Obviously, he's wanted here. Not that he wasn't wanted in Milwaukee, but it's always nice to go somewhere where youre really wanted, and [he can] lean on the pitching staff here to help him be effective for us down the stretch.Antonetti said Perkins will begin his tenure with Clevelands organization in Triple-A Columbus.[Perkins is] willing to do whatever the team needs him to do, and that has covered a multitude of different roles in my time with him, Hoskins said. Unbelievable athlete. Hes so exciting to watch in center field, and I think he's really just learning who he is at the plate. He can help, I think, any team being a switch hitter. He's got some speed. He's the kind of guy that you throw out there, and you don't really ever have to worry about. He'll fit right in here with the style we play. I'm just excited for him, and hopefully he gets some opportunities here.No matter what happens in the next couple of days, Kwan, Hoskins and Vogt agreed they will feel a sense of relief when the trade deadline passes. It's always a huge outside distraction. Everybody else always wants to talk about it and rightfully so, Hoskins said. But, yeah, as soon as it passes, it's like, OK, now we have eight weeks to sprint towards our goal. So, to me, that's the most important thing, and getting past the deadline kind of, I think, lets us have our full focus on that.Nate Ulrich is the sports columnist of the Akron Beacon Journal and a sports features writer. 'We're very aligned': Joe Root reveals why Stephen Fleming won him over instantly
Joe Root has hailed incoming England Test coach Stephen Fleming as a major reason behind his enthusiasm for leading the side again, saying the former New Zealand captain's vision has left him excited about the team's future.England confirmed Fleming as their new Test coach earlier this week after parting ways with Brendon McCullum last month. The 53-year-old will officially begin his tenure later this year.Root returned as England captain during the second Test against New Zealand in June after Ben Stokes was removed from the role following a nightclub brawl incident after the series opener. Although Stokes was later cleared and returned to play his final Test, Root retained the captaincy, marking his second stint as England's Test skipper.Speaking about his first interactions with Fleming, Root said the conversations immediately convinced him that the pair shared a similar outlook."I've admired him from afar, first as a player and recently as a coach. To get the chance to work together is going to be great fun. Once I'd spoken to Stephen about it and saw his energy and excitement for it, and saw we're very aligned on it, I got excited very quickly. Hopefully, we can work and build on a lot of the good things that have happened over the last four years," Root told BBC Sport.Root also paid tribute to McCullum and Stokes, crediting the former leadership duo for transforming England's Test setup and changing his own perspective on the game."I think Brendon and Ben did a brilliant job, in many ways, of turning things around and getting us in a position where hopefully now we can carry that forward in a slightly different way. Hopefully, we can work and build on a lot of the good things that have happened over the last four years."The last four years have been the most fun I've had in professional cricket, and a big part of that was down to the way they [McCullum and Stokes] got me to see the game."Clearly, the last little while is probably what's fresh in everyone's mind, but you're looking at a four-year period where we did a lot of amazing things.
