Whatever metaphor youd like to envision for sportswriter retires.I wont render any sort of positive or negative verdict on Souhan the person (of which I dont know enough) or Souhan the successful writer (every scribe will compose some columns we agree with and others we disagree withthat is the nature of the business). But Souhans retirement does make me reflect upon the ways in which I receive my baseball news have changed in just the 30 years Ive been intensely following the sport.There was a time in which newsprint truly was the gold standard of baseball info. For me, this took two forms:The Baseball Weekly subscription my parents would get me for my birthday every yearMy grandfather reliablysome might say metronomicallygetting me the daily Star Tribune while I spent the summer months at his cabin lake homeThis was of course supplemented by nightly baseball news on cable TV programs like SportsCenter or Baseball Tonight. But beyond reading a timed publication or watching a timed TV show, there was no instant baseball news at my fingertips.With all that in mind, columnists like Souhan told me what to think about the Minnesota Twins. On one hand: a helpful narrowing of the information portal (like a TV news anchor or a Blockbuster Video section with X number of titles). On the other hand: An un-democratic narrowing of the information portal in the sense that all opinions were being put through the Souhan filter (of which most professional journalists will try to avoid, but cannot of course do so entirely).This is where I might usually make some sort of value-judgement statement on the sports journalism situation, but I have no proclamation here. While the capital-I Internet gives everyone (including yours truly) a chance to pontificate on the National Pastime, it also makes it that much more difficult for the true professionals/experts to make a career of it.So, while the accuracy or personal enjoyment of Souhans scribbles will ultimately fade into the background with time, his retirement makes me contemplate the nature of sports journalism and how well likely never see an era like his again. When Patrick Reusse either absconds or goes gentle into that good night, it will really hit home.Of course, it wont take you until Monday morning to get the recap of this Minnesota Twins versus Seattle Mariners clash. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Rookie sensation Oliva Miles spearheaded an efficient offense with 28 points, Courtney Williams added 27 points, and the Minnesota Lynx won their 10th-straight game with a 108-100 win over the Indiana Fever on Sunday.There was a rally outside the Target Center that pitted those supporting Fever reserve Sophie Cunningham, who told ESPN last week she believed trans athletes should not play against girls, against those who oppose a ban. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeves wore a shirt that read, Trans kids belong, and had a pregame conversation with Cunningham, who was booed during the game.Minnesota had a 96-82 lead with 6:41 to play before the Fever, who had scored 100 in a record six-straight games, pulled within 100-98 with more than 2 1/2 minutes to go. Miles and Williams both came up with big baskets as the Lynx won their 10th straight for the first time since 2016.The leagues No. 1 offense definitely made life difficult for the leagues No. 2 defense, but the Fever, who played in Portland on Friday night, couldnt stop the Lynx on the offensive end. Both teams shot 57% with 11 3-pointers and went 11 of 15 from the foul line with a combined 55 assists. The big difference was Indiana had 12 turnovers to six for Minnesota, which had an 11-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Napheesa Collier had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lynx (25-6). Natasha Howard scored 13 points and Kayla McBride 10. COMSTOCK PARK - With the departure of Tarik Skubal and the injury of Jack Flaherty, the Detroit Tigers are in need of starting pitching.The good news is help is on the way.Jackson Jobe looked strong in his minor league rehab start with the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday, Aug. 2, at LMCU Ballpark, and is getting closer to a return to the majors."I feel great. It is good to be back (in West Michigan). It's obviously been a long process but I am just thankful, everything has gone well up to this point. I am just trying to keep it that way," Jobe said.Jobe pitched four innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. He struck out five and walked two, throwing 69 pitches, in a 7-5 Whitecaps loss against the Beloit Snappers in the first game of a doubleheader.He reached 100 mph a few times and was regularly in the high 90s. He was scheduled to have a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo, but it was moved to High-A West Michigan because of weather."I still feel like I am knocking off a little bit of rust but all things considered, I feel pretty good," Jobe said. "Not much to complain about. I just could have a little better executing if I were to nit-pick. But I am pretty happy with how it went. Two-strike executing (is what I was focused on today). I felt like I am in the zone a good bit. Being able to tighten up my command with two strikes - I feel like I did a better job today than my last start. Still have a little bit to go."Jobe gave up a single to right on the first pitch of the game but settled in quickly. His last pitch of the first inning was 100 mph.He loaded the bases with a single and two walks in the second inning put induced a groundout to short to end the inning unscathed in his first 36 pitches.It was his fifth rehab start. He threw 54 pitches for Double-A Erie on July 25. He is well into his recovery from an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery in June of 2025."I trust the plan they have for me," he said. "Change-up is the last thing that needs to come along, just as far as execution goes. Definitely getting eager. I am trying not to play GM as they say. I am ready to go. I will be ready for anything they ask me to do," Jobe said. "The toughest part has been not being able to play with the team, especially times we were struggling. I want to be out there to help the team. I have tried my best to be patient and not rush. We have been really smart about it. I will be ready to go."Pacheco powerIsaac Pacheco was also on rehab assignment. (Jason Fochtman/Houston Chronicle)\n \n\n\nThe Houston Astros do not want to deal from their major-league roster in their pursuit of help ahead of Monday's trade deadline, general manager Dana Brown told the team's pregame radio show Sunday.\nBrown has said the Astros want to add offense, specifically in their outfield, and possibly pitching before the deadline arrives at 5 p.m. CT on Monday. The club's capacity to make multiple significant additions is not clear, though, between trade capital and payroll considerations.\nOne way to mitigate both might be for Houston to trade from its major-league roster to off-set both the prospect cost and additional payroll created by any acquisitions. The Astros entered Sunday roughly $11 million below the first CBT threshold, per Cot's Contracts.\nBrown, however, told the pregame radio show: "We do not want to pull from our major-league team. We have a good core, we've got a good group going right now and the team's playing very well, everyone's settling into their role. So we'd like to keep it like that and not pull from our major-league team."\nIf that stance holds, it suggests the Astros will need to pursue trades by offering prospects from a farm system widely ranked among the sport's thinnest by outside evaluators. Brown acknowledged as much during his radio appearance.\n"The tough part is sometimes in order to get something you have to give up something, and that sometimes means your prospects," Brown said.\nHouston's farm system was ranked 26th of 30 teams in the most recent rankings from Baseball America, which has 2025 first-round pick Xavier Neyens as the club's only top-100 overall prospect. MLB Pipeline ranks Neyens and outfielder Kevin Alvarez among its top-100 overall prospects.\nBrown did not offer specifics about the Astros' trade discussions with about 30 hours until the deadline but said "calls have definitely started to heat up starting yesterday" and the team is "very hopeful" and "locking into a few things."\nBrown also said he believes "we definitely have the prospect capital" required to consummate a trade. Brown did his interview remotely from what he described as a "war room," which he said included the team's assistant general managers, director-level staff and "of course" senior advisor to ownership and baseball operations Jeff Bagwell. But Taillon struggled mightily this year, going 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA. He missed almost six weeks with a hamstring injury and got lit up in his first two starts back. That led the Cubs to move on and designated him for assignment.It should be noted that Taillon was universally liked as a teammate, with many Cubs saying he was a terrific friend to everyone and a mentor to younger players. That should help a Blue Jays clubhouse that at least one player has claimed is lacking in chemistry. Taillon goes to the Blue Jays, who are having a nightmarish season after coming within two outs of a World Series title last year. The Cubs have a makeup game with the Blue Jays at Wrigley on Thursday. Its very possible that Taillon makes his Blue Jays debut in that game.

That thinking was understandable after Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo all made meaningful contributions under Michael Carrick, helping stabilise the attack after his arrival in place of Ruben Amorim.Yet transfer windows rarely move in straight lines.
