Veteran starting pitcher Kevin Gausman will head to a new team for the final months of his current deal. The Toronto Blue Jays have traded Gausman to the Chicago Cubs, providing his new team with a dependable arm in their chase for the postseason, according to FOX Sports and The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. The Blue Jays will receive outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene, The Athletic reported. Gausman is in the final months of the five-year, $110 million deal he signed with Toronto in 2021. He'll be a free agent at the end of this season. Over 22 starts this season, the 35-year-old right-handed pitcher has thrown 127 innings, going 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA. He has struck out 127 and walked 36. Gausman was a key contributor to the Blue Jays' AL pennant season in 2025. He finished the regular season with a 1011 record, 3.59 ERA, and 189 strikeouts in 193 innings pitched. He made five postseason starts, going 23 with a 2.93 ERA as Toronto reached the World Series for the first time since 1993.

Kevin Gausman was absolutely on the list of pitchers available at the trade deadline despite having a down year by the starting hurler's standards, but with the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East cellar, it was almost certain he'd be dealt by Monday.And he was. The veteran starting pitcher is off to the Chicago Cubs, who could definitely use an upgrade to their rotation. The return? A couple of prospects outside their top-10 farmhands. So who won this deal? And what are the details? As always, we've got all of that information for you including grades to hand out for both sides. Let's discuss.Cubs and Blue Jays trade details Cubs get: RHP Kevin GausmanBlue Jays get: SS Ty Southisene and OF Brett BatemanCubs trade gradeYou knew they were likely going to fall short on acquiring Tarik Skubal. The Tampa Bay Raysended up with Freddy Peralta. Getting Gausman for a couple of prospects isn't the flashiest move of the bunch, but maybe it'll pay off. Gausman had a 3.68 ERA last year, but the 35-year-old has a 4.81 ERA in 2026. The hope is a change of scenery helps and that pitching for a contender motivates him. The price is low and the upside is there, so that's something. GRADE: BBlue Jays trade grade Gausman was past his prime and will face free agency, so the return wasn't going to be a ton. Bateman is the 21st-ranked prospect -- per MLB.com -- in the Cubs' system and is a solid hitter who doesn't have a ton of power. Southisene was their 13th-best prospect (he's got some speed to his game). This is Toronto getting something when it might have lost Gausman for nothing in the offseason. Sure! Connecticut finished a six-game road trip with five losses. They were without leading scorer Brittney Griner, who missed her fourth straight game with a left knee issue and has missed 14 games overall. The Sun are 1-13 without Griner. Another top scorer, Aneesah Morrow, was traded to Toronto on Friday.Without Griner, the Sun were outscored 46-24 in the paint. They shot 9 of 23 (39%) from 3-point range and 14 of 44 (32%) inside the arc.Dallas led 48-37 at the half. Three bus loads of fans from Houston attended the game.
