SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOverdue IMSA endurance race at Road America ends in long-awaited victoryELKHART LAKE Road racing fans got their endurance race at Road America. Wayne Taylor Racing got its first overall victory in more than two years.Strategies changed frequently, The racing was every bit as competitive throughout the 6 hours of the Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix as it was in a race less than half as long a year ago. A little cleaner, too.I think if you want more action than this, this is crazy, co-winner Filipe Albuquerque said with a smile. Up to the last laps....I love it here. It makes sense to have a 6-hour race here. The crowd is incredible coming around. Again, IMSA never fails to put a show on. I think it's spot on.Let's just enjoy the moment.Six hours did seem right Aug. 2 on a day with temperatures in the 70s and intermittent sun that peaked out enough to make changing track conditions one more variable.Road America management brands the facility as Americans National Park of Speed and touts fans ability to move around the 640 acres. Six hours provided ample time for fans to do a 4-mile lap, even on foot, while the drivers did 151 of them in the longest major race in Road Americas 71 years.Although Road America does not announce numbers, management did say the crowd surpassed that for the NTT IndyCar Series event in June after running neck-and-neck in recent years.Albuquerque, who teamed with Ricky Taylor in the No. 10 Cadillac, took the lead through the timing of pit stops with 45 minutes to go. He was in when the caution flag flew and then held the spot for the final 36 laps.I think for all of us, it's a big relief, Taylor said. Obviously like since changing manufacturers [from Acura], we haven't performed at the level I think the expectations were.We just kept working harder and harder and harder, and the results weren't coming. So now to have a result, I feel like the way the race went, it wasn't a lucky one, the team did everything right. The duo also won at Road America in 2022.The race finished under caution after Kevin Estre in the No. 7 Penske Porsche and Jack Aitken in the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac tangled in Turn 1 on a restart with 10 minutes to go while battling for second. That gave second to the No. 5 JDC-Miller MotorSports of Laurin Heinrich, Tijmen van der Helm and Kaylen Frederick, while Albuquerques and Taylors teammates Jordan Taylor and Louis Deletraz claimed the final podium spot. Estre and Laurens Vanthoor were credited with 17th and Aitken and Earl Bamber were credited with 18th, although the results will remain unofficial until an in-depth investigation is complete. The Inter Europol Competition team of Jeremy Clarke, Bijoy Garg and Tom Dillman won in LMP2, overcoming a penalty early in the race and a botched pit stop and catching a break when the final caution erased doubt about remaining fuel.Pfaff Racing gave the new Laborghini Temerario its first IMSA victory with Andrea Caldarelli and Sandy Mitchell at the wheel of its GTD Pro No. 9 entry. The victory ended a 36-race winless steak for the team that dated to 2023 and was its third at Road America following 2019 and 21.Winward Racing won in GTD with Russell Ward, Phillip Ellis and Indy Dontje in the No. 57 Mercedes-AMG, its third class victory of the season and its second at Road America, following 2022.To say the 54-car race was action-packed and entertaining is not to say it was perfect. There is room to build.I think the first step would be to try to get a bit more green flag out of the 6 hours because it was quite a lot of yellows, Heinrich said.Seven caution periods consumed 42 laps, including 10 of the opening 20 and 10 of the final 15.We knew last year this place deserves an endurance race, Caldarelli said. It was bit of chaos last year with a lot of penalties and so on. Since then I feel that everything started to chill out a little bit more with the driving.IMSA announced the 2027 schedule already in March with a 6-hour race again at Road America on Aug. 1.Could it extend past dusk? IMSA and Road America had already kicked that idea around in general terms, and the idea was floated at the drivers meeting,How about 8 hours at some point?Maybe not, Caldarelli said: Six is enough. This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Overdue IMSA endurance race at Road America ends in long-awaited victory0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNordic Whitecaps upset HydraHeads to secure 1st Dragon Boat championship winAug. 2BEMIDJI The 20th Annual Lake BemidjiDragon Boat Festivalsaw the Nordic Whitecaps take home the championship race after upsetting a local rowing dynasty. The rhythmic drumming of the dragon boats filled the air along the shores of Lake Bemidji on Saturday, as a large crowd watched the 11-time champion-winning team, the HydraHeads, finish second to the team they help train in the off-season.After a day of racing, complete with 11 morning qualifying heats, followed by another 11 in the afternoon, each team's racing times were combined to determine the top finishes of the day deciding who would race in the division finals for the bronze, silver, gold and championship cups.As the championship race got underway, the Nordic Whitecaps were in the lead, but with only a few yards left between their boat and the finish line, the HydraHeads began to quickly close the gap between the two teams, leaving the crowd in suspense. As the boats crossed the final buoys, it was a photo finish, but eventually the final times showed the Whitecaps led with a time of 2:03.17 while the HydraHeads came in at 2:03.33 after their late push. The close finish locked in the Nordic Whitecaps' first-ever championship win in the annual event."It's kind of amazing. We came out of nowhere; we weren't expecting first place. We were hoping to battle for second," said Jack Galloway, one of the team captains for the Nordic Whitecaps. "I'm really happy with the team. We worked really hard out there, and we dug deep."Made up primarily of members of the Bemidji High School Nordic Ski Team, the boat's participants trended younger than many of the other 33 teams participating in the races on Saturday."I feel like we just really stuck together and watched the whole race," Galloway continued. "Making sure we were in line, in time. There were obviously moments where we were starting to get off, and at the very end we were all tired, but we really stuck together, which is the main thing."This was Galloway's first year rowing with the Nordic Whitecaps, as he participated with another team last year. The irony of the high school team locking in their win is that they are coached by many members of the HydraHeads team during their ski season downtime."Honestly, it was very exciting," Whitecaps captain Riley Story said of beating their coaches. "It's kind of surprising; we felt our time was quite a bit slower than theirs, but it was very exciting when we crossed the finish line and saw that we won."Story said she has been racing with the Whitecaps for three years."We tried a few new things, but we mostly just really dug deep," Story said about their training. "There are quite a few people that are returning to our team, but there's a lot of new people, too."The reigning champion HydraHeads, representing the Headwaters Canoe and Kayak Club, were just as excited for the Whitecaps, realizing most coaches' dreams when the pupil finally beats the teacher."Well, as I see it, if we were going to get beat by a team, it might as well be the kids we train," saidHydraHeads Captain Mark Walters, whostepped down as head coachof the BHS Nordic ski team in 2025 after 22 years at the helm. "We work with them on Tuesdays with our own dragon boats. We've been doing this for years."They've been on the hunt for us six, seven years in a row, in and out of the gold and the championship divisions. So to me, that was a pretty sweet second place. A little bit of a win-win."Other teams participating in the championship division race were Island City Dragon Boat Club's Wake My Day, who finished in third place, and the Otter Tail Power Company Kilowatter Otters, who made their Dragon Boat Festival debut and landed in fourth place.More notable finishes for the day included the Kilohaha-Superior Paddlers team winning their first gold medal with a time of 2:05.53. For the first time in the 20-year event, Sanford Health's Paging Dr. Paddle became the first-ever back-to-back silver medal champions.Among the special awards, Sanford Dermatology's team You're DERM Right won best team look, the Kilowatter Otters won most creative team name and the Bixby Paddlers won best team village."There was excellent weather Friday and Saturday this year, which can make or break a festival," said Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce President Scott Turn, a main organizer of the festival. "There are new winners this year, which is also great, so it's hard to complain about anything. It has been pretty full out here, a lot of family events, so it has been a good festival."The Gold Division race saw the Kilohaha-Superior Paddlers take down the Paul Bunyan Communications team The Need for Giga-Speed, who finished in second place, the Misfit Paddlers in third place, and Paddle for Paul! in fourth place.Another close race in the Silver Division saw Paging Dr. Paddle pull away in the end. Finishing in second place was the Minnesota Dragon Boat Club's Emerald Dragons, closely followed by another Paul Bunyan Communications team, the Giga Paddlers, in third place, and Sanford Health's Knot on Call in fourth place. The Dragon Divas took home the bronze cup while the race for the rest of the race's placing was extremely close. Affinity Plus Purple Paddlers just finished in front of Lakeland PBS Paddlers for second place. Rounding out the bronze cup was the Fast and Floorious, taking home fourth place.Championship1.
