SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat has just happened on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2017 after Michael Thorbjornsens winPhoto by Raj Mehta/Getty ImagesMichael Thorbjornsen won on the PGA Tour for the first time in his career on Sunday.Thorbjornsen, 24, triumphed at the Rocket Classic after shooting a superb final-round 63.He has been knocking on the door for pretty much two years now, but he finally managed to get the job done in Detroit. With his win at the Rocket Classic, Michael Thorbjornsen proved that hes now ready to take a step up to the next level. The 24-year-old is a PGA Tour superstar in the making, and that star quality in young players is exactly what is needed right now.Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesBy the time The Masters rolls around next year, there will not be a single major champion under the age of 30.That has to change, and as things stand, there have been some really encouraging signs in that regard recently. What has happened on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2017 after Michael Thorbjornsens winThorbjornsens win at the Rocket Classic one week after Jackson Koivun romped to victory at the 3M Open. The future is very bright for the PGA Tour right now, with so many talented players proving that they are ready to win.And Thorbjornsen and Koivun winning in back-to-back weeks was exactly what the PGA Tour needed. The last time that two players aged 24 or under won tournaments in consecutive weeks was nine years ago.Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau triumphed at the Greenbrier Classic and the John Deere Classic respectively back in July 2017.Those two players have gone on to enjoy exceptional careers, winning 29 tournaments between them, including two major championships each. The challenge now for Thorbjornsen and Koivun will be to go on and match the careers of players like Schauffele and DeChambeau.Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesThey have already shown us that theyre capable of doing that, but nothing is guaranteed in professional golf. You only need to look at what has happened to Matt Wolff over the past few years as a prime example of that.Michael Thorbjornsen and Jackson Koivun are not guaranteed successBack in 2019, Wolff won the 3M Open in what was just his third start as a professional on the PGA Tour when he was just 20 years old.He then contended to win two majors in 2020, but came up just short at the PGA Championship and the US Open after he was beaten to the trophies by Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau. However, Wolff has been on a slow decline since then, and the 27-year-olds career trajectory should serve as a precautionary tale to the likes of Thorbjornsen and Koivun.Since joining LIV Golf in 2022, Wolff has experienced all sorts of problems, recording just five top-10 finishes over the past four years. He has suffered with numerous injuries, but worryingly, his attitude and application has been called into question on numerous occasions, notably by Brooks Koepka back in 2023.I mean, when you quit on your round, you give up and stuff like that, thats not competing,Koepka told Sports Illustrated.Im not a big fan of that. You dont work hard. Its very tough. Its very tough to have even like a team dynamic when youve got one guy that wont work, one guy is not going to give any effort, hes going to quit on the course, break clubs, gets down, bad body language, its very tough.Ive basically given up on him. A lot of talent, but I mean the talents wasted.Michael Thorbjornsen and Jackson Koivun will surely not follow in Wolffs footsteps, but they must be aware of the potential pitfalls that lie in wait for them if they are not 100 percent focused and committed on improving at all times.0 Comments 0 Shares 27 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Energizer Bunny;' Tez Johnson shining with Buccaneers in training campFrail size and a disappointing showing at the NFL Combine caused Tez Johnson to slip to the seventh round in the 2025 NFL Draft, but so far, nothing has been able to slow the speedster down."I think a lot of people are shocked by how fast I am when I'm playing football, because it may not seem like that from the combine," Johnson said after Sunday's practice. "I definitely use my speed to my advantage, for sure."Heading into his second season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former Oregon Ducks wideout is only gaining confidence while putting together an impressive training camp. As a rookie, Johnson saw the field in spurts, but still wound up second on the team with five touchdowns. He may not have been ready last year for a sizable role offensively, but everything has changed this offseason.Johnson has already hauled in multiple touchdowns early in camp from both starting quarterback Baker Mayfield and backup (and former Washington Husky) Jake Browning. The Buccaneers have trusted Johnson's game-breaking speed that he showed with the Ducks, and it's led to massive plays for the offense in camp."I think my confidence is just higher than last year," Johnson said. Last year, I was just trying to feel it out and I got kind of thrown in the fire a little earlier than what I expected. (I'm) coming back with the confidence. Having that playing time from last year, it just gave me the confidence that I needed."TEZ JOHNSON TD! WHAT A CATCH AND WHAT A FLIPSFvsTB on CBS/Paramount+https://t.co/HkKw7uXVntpic.twitter.com/UtKZZW6YXw NFL (@NFL) October 12, 2025Johnson spent two seasons at Oregon, playing one with his adopted brother Bo Nix and the other with Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel. He holds the record for most catches in a season by a Duck with 86 in 2023, and the second-most as well with 83 catches the following season. He also posted 1,123 yards in 2023, good for the third-most in a single season by an Oregon receiver, trailing only Dillon Mitchell and Troy Franklin. The doubts that surrounded Johnson's career after he left Oregon have been silenced. His 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame may leave him underestimated, but he made defense pay for that mentality with long catches last season, winding up with 28 grabs for 322 yards as a rookie. With veteran Mike Evans now out of the building, Johnson still has several names in front of him on the depth chart, but a regular role in the offense is quickly opening up with his work in training camp, thanks to his experience being tossed into the mix last season. On Thursday, Johnson hauled in a long touchdown pass from Browning over a defender and did his signature acrobatics in the end zone, landing a backflip to wow the training camp audience.Tez Johnson backflips are officially back pic.twitter.com/tFcR7KozjK Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) July 30, 2026"I think it's kind of just how I've been my whole life, the Energizer Bunny," he said. "I love playing football and the game. I always tell people all the time that if they took all the money away, I would still play football. I just love the game."That's the attitude that can earn a player a roster spot, or even a bigger role on offense. Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles isn't worried about the injury risk of the backflips, as long as Johnson continues making plays and keeps the vibes high."He brings energy every day," Bowles said. "He's the energizer of the bunch. Whether he's doing backflips, whether it's singing, whether it's just being exciting, whether it's his cleats or anything else, he brings a lot of flair out here and keeps everybody on their toes."Bowles noted how Johnson's understanding of the offense has progressed moving into his second campaign. While he remains a vertical threat because of his speed, there could be some opportunities for Johnson to shine when the field shrinks as well.On Sunday, Johnson scored on a shallow crosser in the red area, connecting with Mayfield over the middle for the score. Mayfield and Johnson have developed chemistry in camp, but he's made himself a go-to target in camp by watching Mayfield and Browning operate and adapting, much like he did at Oregon with Nix and Gabriel in the gun."As a receiver, you just need to be in the right spot and be friendly to the quarterback," Johnson said. "Just gain trust every time you catch the ball. Every time I catch the ball from each one of those guys, the trust in me for them goes up. I try to do that every single day and just be friendly to them and thank God they trust me to catch the ball for them."Any great offense in the NFL needs speed on the outside, and Johnson certainly brings it to Tampa Bay as one of, if not the fastest option on the team. No, Johnson likely won't eclipse the 1,000-yard mark this season or be the focal point in the offense like he was in Eugene. But with plenty of quickness and a knack for being a quarterback's best friend, Johnson could take a sophomore leap with the Buccaneers in 2026.Contact/Follow@Ducks_Wireon X (formerly Twitter) and like our page onFacebookto follow ongoing coverage of Oregon Ducks news, notes, and opinions. This article originally appeared on Ducks Wire: 'Energizer Bunny;' Tez Johnson shining with Buccaneers in training camp0 Comments 0 Shares 33 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLatest updates on Mets trade deadline rumors: Who will go next?NEW YORK After the Mets traded Freddy Peralta on Sunday afternoon, Clay Holmes could be next. The Mets shipped Peralta to the Rays in exchange for three prospects during their loss to the Marlins at Citi Field on Sunday. While other Mets on expiring deals like lefty reliever Brooks Raley are expected to get traded before Mondays 6 p.m. ET deadline, Holmes could be one of the Mets biggest pieces.ITS FREE: JOIN OUR METS COMMUNITY ON YOUTUBE!Tarik Skubal, widely regarded as the best pitcher available, was traded to the Dodgers late Saturday night. The Blue Jays then traded Kevin Gausman to the pitching-starved Cubs on Sunday evening. That leaves Holmes as one of the best options still available. Earlier this summer, there was still a chance that Holmes would stick with the Mets beyond the deadline. The right-hander was open to an extension, but those talks fizzled as the Mets solidified their status as sellers. Now all signs point toward a trade. The Mets are operating as if Holmes is on an expiring deal because of his $12 million player option, which he will likely reject. With his track record, the way he was pitching before he got hurt in May (a 2.39 ERA), and a weak free-agent class, Holmes stands to benefit from testing the open market.Holmes is still on the injured list, but hes done more than enough to give other teams confidence that hes ready to pitch on a big-league mound again. Even with rumors swirling, the Mets let Holmes make a third rehab assignment start on Sunday. He tossed 5 1/3 innings with High-A Brooklyn, giving up four runs (three earned) while throwing 73 pitches. That puts Holmes in a position to make a start against MLB hitters in his next turn this week. If the package of prospects the Mets got back from Tampa Bay is any indication, they are poised to acquire a handful of talented pieces for Holmes. For Peralta, the Mets added three of the Rays top-30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. All three players outfielder Aidan Smith, right-hander Gary Gill Hill and infielder Emilien Pitre are now positioned within the Mets top-17 prospects, per MLB Pipelines updated rankings.Because of Holmes most recent success, the return for him should be better than it was for Peralta. It also helps the Mets that there are contenders desperate for starting-pitching reinforcements.Raley, similarly, should bring the Mets a better return than they received for fellow lefty rental A.J. Minter when he was traded to the Twins a few days ago. Its a different conversation from what the Mets got back overnight from the White Sox in exchange for Huascar Brazobn (right-handers Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin). Brazobn is under team control for three more years after this one. New York could acquire even more prospect capital if theyre comfortable moving set-up man Luke Weaver, who wont be a free agent until after next season. Brazobn, Raley and Weaver each pitched a scoreless frame in relief for the Mets on Sunday, a microcosm of New Yorks season in which the bullpen did the job and the lineup didnt. New York was 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, getting shut out for the 11th time in 2026. Outfielders Tyrone Taylor and Luis Robert Jr. are also expected to be dealt before Monday night. MORE BY MAX GOODMANMets make another trade, send reliever to AL contenderAug. 3, 2026, 5:00 a.m.Who Mets got back in Freddy Peralta trade with RaysAug. 2, 2026, 10:58 p.m.Taylor is a traditional rental bat who will be a free agent at the end of this season. Contenders in need of a fourth outfielder and a right-handed presence on their bench will be enticed by Taylors recent hot streak at the plate along with his defensive track record. The veteran outfielder is batting .341 with a 1.389 OPS and seven home runs in his last 41 at-bats dating back to July 4.Roberts numbers, on the other hand, arent as attractive. Since returning from another lengthy stint on the injured list earlier this summer, Robert has shown flashes of his prodigious power and offensive upside, but hes batting .135 (5-for-37) in 11 games with two homers. It doesnt make sense for the Mets to keep Robert since their outfield will include Juan Soto, Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing. Robert has a club option for next year at $20 million, so another team that trades for him has the flexibility to cut ties at the end of the year or bet on his upside for 2027 if it is open to paying his contract. Its also possible that the Mets eat some of Roberts salary to make that type of trade more likely. Read the original article on NJ.com.
