Kevin Gausman Expected To Make Cubs Debut Against Royals On Friday Night
Kevin Gausman has been connected to the Chicago Cubs since the beginning of his career. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said the team had asked about his availability for years. When Chicago finally landed the right-hander in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, well, it wasn't much of a surprise. "When I told my wife it was the Cubs, she was like, Its about time," Gausman said. "Because just in Baltimore [with the Orioles] for years, it seemed like it was kind of always a link to here. ... Happy that Im here finally." Gausman was added to Chicago's active roster before Wednesday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Left-hander Antoine Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. The 35-year-old Gausman is expected to make his Cubs debut Friday night at the Kansas City Royals, joining a revamped rotation that also includes Clay Holmes. The Cubs also added reliever Ryan Zeferjahn and left-hander Braxton Garrett in two other deals ahead of Mondays trade deadline. "Being a part of a team when they can bring guys in, and you know that theyre going for it, its almost like a shot of adrenaline and can kind of breathe some life into the team," Gausman said. "It doesnt seem like this team needs it, to be honest, but still excited to be here." Gausman is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season. He was tagged for seven runs and seven hits in two innings in a 16-2 loss to the Cubs on June 19. But the durable Gausman brings a solid track record to Chicago. He pitched at least 174 2/3 innings and made at least 31 starts in each of the previous five years. He worked 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in Torontos 5-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Gausman also helped Toronto reach the 2025 World Series, going 2-3 with a 2.93 ERA in six postseason starts. The Blue Jays lost in the Fall Classic to the Dodgers, a possible playoff opponent for the Cubs this year. "Once youre there, all you want to do is get back," Gausman said of the World Series. "So Im really excited to hopefully get back there with this team." Chicago's deadline additions create some intriguing pitching decisions for manager Craig Counsell moving forward. The Cubs also have right-hander Edward Cabrera and relievers Daniel Palencia and Hoby Milner on rehab stints with Triple-A Iowa. Colin Rea is back in the bullpen for now after the Cubs decided to skip his next turn in the rotation. But more changes are likely on the way. "I think were going to have guys pitch at doing things they maybe havent done in the past as much, and that may be a little, you know, different for them," Counsell said, "and we may have to kind of be careful with how we manage them in those roles, but these things will figure themselves out. I also think that we have some competition kind of in the starting rotation right now, too." Reporting by The Associated Press.

Stephen Fleming approaches CSK legend for England batting coach role
After ending his long association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), England Test head coach Stephen Fleming has reportedly approached former CSK batter Michael Hussey about joining his coaching staff for England Test team.According to 7Cricket, Fleming has informally asked Hussey if he would be interested in becoming England's batting coach.Hussey had been part of CSK's coaching setup as batting coach since 2018. After Fleming left the IPL franchise to take charge of England's Test team, he reportedly reached out to his former teammate and colleague to explore the possibility of working together again at international level.Marcus Trescothick is currently England's Test batting coach and will continue as interim head coach during the three-Test series against Pakistan in August and September. However, his long-term role with the team remains uncertain.Hussey, who is coaching Welsh Fire in the ongoing Men's Hundred, has previously worked with England. He served as a consultant during the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and was part of the support staff when England won the title.Speaking during that tournament, Hussey had said: "The first time I pulled on the England shirt it was a little bit strange but after that you get to work with the players, enjoy developing those individual relationships, and forget about what youre wearing."The report added that although the England and Wales Cricket Board has not made a formal offer, Fleming's preferred choice for the batting coach's role is Hussey. If Hussey accepts the role, he would reunite with England during the Ashes, 14 years after his final appearance for Australia.Fleming and Hussey first played together for CSK in the inaugural IPL season in Chennai. Over the years, Fleming became CSK's head coach while Hussey played for the franchise before later joining the coaching staff. The pair worked together for 15 years.Fleming is set to officially begin his role as England's Test head coach during the team's tour of South Africa in December.Until then, Marcus Trescothick will continue as interim head coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan, which begins at Headingley on August 19.

Mike Evans remains sidelined at training camp as injury woes mount on offense for 49ers
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans remained sidelined from practice Wednesday with a quad strain that surfaced Monday. Not much about Evans' injury has been divulged since he surfaced on the injury report, but it's certainly concerning for a 49ers team that continues to struggle with injuries and depth in its passing game.Ricky Pearsall is out for the season with a PCL injury in his right knee. Deebo Samuel now projects as the No. 2 option behind Evans after reuniting with the franchise since Pearsalls injury surfaced.Free-agent signing Christian Kirk and rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling are also out. Kirks been sidelined since late July with a calf strain, and Stribling has a hamstring injury.Yahoo SportsPlay Yahoo's new College Fantasy Football game: Create or join a league now!Kirk signed as a depth piece and a potential No. 3 option for quarterback Brock Purdy. Stribling was San Franciscos second-round pick out of Mississippi.Soft-tissue injuries can linger; the 49ers will surely take the cautious route and not put Evans at risk of further injury unnecessarily. He was San Franciscos splash add in the offseason and is the clear No. 1 receiver on the depth chart. Don't expect Evans to return to practice until he's fully cleared. The same can be said for Kirk and Stribling. In the meantime, theyre all missing valuable time getting acclimated with a new quarterback and offense. And of course, theres George Kittle, whose timeline to return remains unclear. The All-Pro tight end sustained a torn Achilles tendon in the playoffs last season. While prognoses for Achilles tears have improved dramatically in recent years, its fair to wonder how effective Kittle will be upon his return from such a serious injury as he approaches 33 years old. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk, meanwhile, surfaced on the injury report Wednesday with a broken finger. Details regarding his injury are unclear. It all adds up to a concerning injury tally on offense for a team thats been ravaged by injuries in recent seasons. The 49ers are certainly hoping that its not a sign of things to come once the games are actually being played.

Kevin Durant's harsh Klay Thompson take draws aggressive response from former NBA forward
Kevin Durant's harsh Klay Thompson take draws aggressive response from former NBA forward originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Kevin Durant argued this week that the newly assembled Philadelphia 76ers roster featuring LeBron James is stronger on paper than the Golden State Warriors team he won back-to-back titles with in 2017 and 2018. In making that case, Durant directly called out his former teammate Klay Thompson by name, describing him as someone who was never an MVP candidate. The comments drew responses from multiple former teammates including Thompson himself, and prompted former NBA forward Evan Turner to come to Thompson's defense.Evan Turner pushes back against Kevin Durant dismissing Klay Thompsons MVP credentialsThe debate stems from LeBron James' decision to join a Philadelphia roster that already features Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey this offseason. Durant's Warriors teams, by comparison, were built around Stephen Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala before Durant joined in 2016.Durant initially made his case at a USA Basketball event over the weekend, noting the difference in scoring firepower between the two rosters."The last time they put three 20-point scorers on a team, they said it was unfair, which was the [Warriors] team I was on," Durant said. "[The 76ers] have got four 25-point scorers on this team."When a fan followed up in the Instagram comments asking whether Durant truly believed the 76ers were the better team on paper, he was direct."Ain't close lmao," he wrote. "Joel, MVP recently. Jaylen Brown, recent Finals MVP. Tyrese Maxey, All-Star the last 3 years. We all know what Bron does. Klay Thompson, never a MVP candidate in nothing, 22ppg. Draymond, 14ppg, 7 rebounds, 6 assists. Steph a MVP just like Joel was. I don't get how the Warriors team is better on paper."Former NBA forward Evan Turner was among those who responded on X, calling out Durant's specific phrasing around Thompson."'Was never an MVP in anything' is a tad bit aggressive, LOL," Turner wrote. Turner faced Thompson regularly during his playing days with Portland and Boston and has spoken before about how difficult those Warriors rosters were to game-plan against. As for Klay Thompson, now with the Dallas Mavericks, he saw Durants comment circulating and responded on his Instagram story tagging KD directly: "Aye man u good? What u using my full government for?""Aye man u good?"Klay Thompson clapped back at Kevin Durant on his IG story for saying that he was "never an MVP candidate in nothing" (via @KlayThompson) pic.twitter.com/5opS8HNJxQ ClutchPoints (@ClutchPoints) August 4, 2026Thompson is a four-time champion, a two-time All-NBA selection, and a five-time All-Star. Durant's point about MVP voting is technically accurate as Thompson received only one MVP vote in his career, finishing tied for 10th in 2015. But the characterization drew criticism with many pointing out that Thompson made five All-Star teams, the same total as Jaylen Brown, while operating as a third option within a system that asked him to sacrifice individual numbers for the team's success.Draymond Green delivers quippy remark targeting Kevin DurantDraymond Green also took issue with how Durant framed his former teammates' contributions. Green, who re-signed with Golden State this offseason, referenced Durant's past burner account controversy when he posted on Threads."Slim thought he was on his burner?" he wrote.Green then addressed the matter more substantively on his podcast, pushing back on the idea that the Warriors dynasty could be measured through the same lens Durant applied to the 76ers."You have to understand the way KD views basketball, the way KD views basketball is very Uncle Drew-ish, this game will and always will be about buckets. So he's going to mention the 25-point scorers. He also said the Sixers are better on paper than the 2016-17 Warriors. I don't know that I can agree with that, I don't really think it works," said Green.Green's broader argument was that the value of those championship teams went well beyond individual award credentials and that using MVP candidacy as a benchmark for a player like Thompson missed the point of what made those Warriors rosters function. The debate over whether the current 76ers can match that dynasty's accomplishments is one fans will be working through all season. Philadelphia has the star power on paper, but the Warriors teams Durant was part of have two championships to show for theirs.More NBA News:Draymond Green ties Victor Wembanyama's $51M pay cut to Jalen BrunsonKlay Thompson hits back at Kevin Durant over 'never an MVP candidate' digJaylen Brown reveals what excites him most about playing with LeBron JamesKevin Durant gets rare all-time nod from ex-teammate Devin Booker with Michael Jordan left outKevin Durant-Russell Westbrook Rockets reunion gets surprising endorsement

Pro Bowl LB Azeez Al-Shaair says the sky is the limit with Texans' defense
When fourth-year head coach DeMeco Ryans first came to the Houston Texans, they had one of the worst defenses in the league. But in 2025, the Texans had one of the most dominant defenses in the NFL.Last season is in the rearview mirror. With the additions Houston made in the offseason, including signing defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and defensive lineman Logan Hall, it should be even better this year. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair said the defense is not having that attitude. Instead, they have to climb up the mountain and put in the work just like last year.Azeez Al-Shaair has a ton of respect for how Keylan Rutledge plays the game:That boy is Conference USA all the way. He plays that way too, plays with a chip on his shoulder. Plays the game the right way, works hard. At that position, it doesnt take a whole lot of talent, pic.twitter.com/z60Qds06DX Houston Stressans (@TexansCommenter) August 4, 2026We go as far as we work," Al-Shaair said. "Its a lot of favor and just guys staying healthy along the way. When you have all the pieces that we already had and then you add guys to it, obviously the skys the limit. Its just about the work we put in every day. You cant climb that mountain on day one, but you also cant look back either. Its just taking it one day at a time, one step at a time and were on the right track.I dont think theres a problem later more pumped for a padded practice than #Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair. Dude was the first player on the field bland hasnt stopped bouncing since he took it. pic.twitter.com/Ne7Wiolpf4 Cole Thompson (@MrColeThompson) August 1, 2026So far, they are headed in the right direction in training camp. The defense has been physical throughout training camp, including getting some takeaways. If the Texans defense performs this way during the season, there is no limit to how far this defense could take them. This article originally appeared on Texans Wire: Pro Bowl LB Azeez Al-Shaair says the sky is the limit with Texans' defense

How Josh Downs' role in Colts' offense could change in 2026
The expectation is that Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Josh Downs will see more opportunities come his way this season. But how he's utilized within Shane Steichen's offense could differ as well. Downs has primarily lined up in the slot during his first three NFL seasons, but with the uncertainty around the WR3 role for the Colts and the team's usage of two-tight-end sets, that sets the stage for Downs to see more snaps lined up outside in 2026."I'd wager we see Downs' slot rate fall from near league leading to the realm of Ladd McConkey (62.9%) orWan'Dale Robinson(63.9%), as Steichen experiments with more bunch and stack sets to get Downs free releases off the line scrimmage from outside alignments," wrote ESPN's Ben Solak.Solak added that in Downs' career, he's never had an average air yard per target above 8.0, but this year he expects the Colts' wide receiver to get closer to the 9.0 mark.Earlier this offseason, Steichen acknowledged that getting Downs more reps outside during OTAs and training camp was going to be a priority. The team believes that's a role he can fill. And with more snaps outside, that means additional ways for Downs to impact the game, specifically running more intermediate and downfield routes. No one player on the Colts roster is tasked with replacing Michael Pittman's production this season, but Downs, along with Alec Pierce and Tyler Warren, will shoulder that workload. For Downs, that not only means more targets, but the chance to showcase a more well-rounded skill set."I think getting lost in this a little bit is ... Josh Downs," GM Chris Ballard said earlier this offseason, viaESPN's Stephen Holder. "I think Josh Downs is freaking good. I do. I've always thought he's good. I think allowing him some more opportunities, we're going to see some of the special stuff you've seen in the past, but more."This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: How Josh Downs' role in Colts' offense could change in 2026
