Theres a lot going on right now in the NFL. The fun of training camp is the bustling enthusiasm of the coaches, the players and the media. But it also makes it difficult to cut away the fiction from fact. Its hope season and hype season. Its also the season for catastrophe and doom. A perfect example? A.J. Brown dropped a pass in his first practice as a New England Patriot. Brown and quarterback Drake Maye then proceeded to struggle for a few days and on Boston sports radio and social media, it was like The Citgo Sign was falling. Things turned around as soon as the pads came on. Brown and Maye have been beating up New Englands defense, even with superstar corner Christian Gonzalez in coverage. So you get it. Things were horrible until they were incredible. There was nothing in between. (And Ill have more on Brown, Maye and the Patriots.) Thats happening in all 32 NFL training camps. So lets do what we always do here with the Sound Smart column. Im here to spin it forward, dive deeper, think outside the box and read between the lines. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye recognized the pressure coming off the right side. It was cornerback Marcus Jones, one of the fastest players on the field. The play came in a red-zone drill 11 on 11 in full pads last week on the practice fields at Gillette Stadium. Whether or not Maye knew the blitz was coming before the snap, the QB knew exactly what to do with the ball when it hit his hands. He looked to his right to find A.J. Brown, whod createdjust enough separation on a slant route. Maye fired the ball at the star receiver, acquired in June in a trade that included a first-round pick. Brown managed a catch-and-run that put the Patriots inside the 5-yard line. I couldnt help but wonder: What might that play have looked like without Brown? It doesnt take that much imagination. It was a series of corner blitzes that devastated the Patriots in the Super Bowl, when they fell behind against the Seattle Seahawks. Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon finished with six blitzes, four pressures and one sack. One of the best cover corners in the league,Witherspoon made an effective albeit shocking pass-rusher. Maye never seemed to have an answer, not even deep into the game. But in camp, Maye did. And thats especially important because well, guess who the Patriots will see in Week 1. To open the NFL season. On a Wednesday. Yeah, its the Seahawks. Its also in Seattle, probably the least hospitable stadium in the league. The last time they saw each other, the Seahawks owned the Patriots. But New England has upgraded its roster sizably since then. Receiver Romeo Doubs is an upgrade at WR2. Defensive lineman DreMont Jones and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker arent flashy players, but they will be excellent starters at their respective positions. Brown is the biggest upgrade. Theres no way around it. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels can build a system that gives Maye answers, but somebody has to make a play. Brown is showing the Patriots they can trust him to do just that. "I want to say Im 90 percent [comfortable in the offense]," Brown said last week at Pats camp. Brown struggled to connect with Maye in the early practices at camp. But that just goes to show how difficult it is to make a real evaluation after just a few sessions. Because Maye and Brown were firing when the pads went on. I asked Brown if he had to change the way he played his position, depending upon his quarterback. "You have to. You have to do what your quarterback likes," Brown said. "As far as my game, my game will be my game. But as far as what he likes and what he needs, that's the thing that I got to get on the same page with him and continue to work on." Its surely no coincidence that, just 24 hours after delivering this quote, Brown caught a fade for a touchdown against Christian Gonzalez, the No. 1-rated cornerback in Madden 27. Brown gives the Patriots answers, especially against a defense as good as Seattles. New England is currently a 3.5-point underdog for the season-opener. Id say that underestimates the Patriots. This seemed at least to me to be a good year to pick the San Francisco 49ers to go to the Super Bowl. Their defense improved significantly over the offseason. Their offense got healthy and added veteran receiver Mike Evans. It just felt like this could be the year when they could make their own luck (or overcome their inevitable bad luck) and make a deep run. But San Francisco seems to have nothing but bad headlines. Most recently, there was the news about receiver Ricky Pearsall, whose PCL injury had not healed correctly and will need season-ending surgery after just a few practices. It seems like the 49ers have been preparing for this possibility drafting receiver DeZhaun Stribling in Round 2 and, immediately after the news broke about Pearsall, signing veteran receiver Deebo Samuel. But of course, Stribling is dealing with a hamstring injury. Then there was coach Kyle Shanahan's car accident. He crashed head-on into another car after taking his attention off the road by dropping his phone. He suffered three broken ribs, a broken left hand, a concussion and a head wound that required 40 stitches,per ESPN. Shanahan is participating on a limited basis at the training camp. Finally, theres receiver Brandon Aiyuk, whose behavior so far as we can see from social media is troubling. He has refused to report to the 49ers' facility since he suffered an injury, and his outbursts on social media have rendered him totally untradeable. This has gone on long enough that Aiyuk is no longer much of a distraction. But even on the back burner, its still there particularly as the team sorts through the drama at the receiver position. This isnt to say that the 49ers cant overcome this tumultuous patch. Were still over a month from a regular-season game. But in the competitive NFC West, a slow start feels like a bad start. By all accounts, the Cowboys' offense is humming in training camp. Best of all, theres no ho-humming. At this time last year, we were waiting for the tension to resolve between superstar Micah Parsons and team owner Jerry Jones. And it didnt with Jones trading Parsons in a massive blockbuster after the All-Pro edge rusher posted regularly on social media to provide updates around the failed contract talks with the Cowboys. It felt like history might repeat itself, with All-Pro receiver George Pickens set to play on the franchise tag. Pickens couldve fought for a new long-term deal and caused unrest in many of the same ways as Parsons. And Pickens would be justified in doing so. Instead, the receiver has been torching the Cowboys' defense alongside Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. And Pickens is remaining patient and confident that his agent and the Cowboys will get a deal done. The offense could be even better than it was last year. So if the defense is better and it should be, given the additions of safeties Jalen Thompson and Caleb Downs and edges Rashan Gary and Malachi Lawrence then the Cowboys could win their division. But Prescott has bigger plans. Hes thinking about the Super Bowl. He invited discussion by wearing a Super Bowl XXX shirt (when the Cowboys last won it all) to the team hotel to start camp. When he faced a question about it, Prescott spoke freely. "The tones been set," he said. "I knew you [reporters] would like it. Didnt know how many of the teammates would see it. Its just the manifesting thing. We want stuff in life a lot of times, but then when people start talking about it, you kind of hesitate. Should I say that if theyre going to hold me to it? Well, absolutely. Playing in this organization, being in it 10 years, going into Year 11, Im not going to shy away from it. "When you dont have it, it sucks. When you dont get to play for it, when youre watching other teams play in the playoffs, theres nothing worse than that. I said Id be the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys when I was 6 years old, and said Id be in the NFL, and I got here. A lot of things in my life, I said Id do and I did it. And so why shy away from that now? Why shy away from asking people to hold me to the same standard that I believe that I can accomplish and this team can accomplish? "I dont know if the T-shirt was [saying], This is it. It was an energy thing." The Chiefs will almost definitely start cornerback Mansoor Delane at CB1 after trading up to draft him in Round 1. But that move pushing draft pieces into one big acquisition might normally mean that a draft class is less likely to produce a handful of instant-impact players. Yet early in camp, the Chiefs are giving youngsters every opportunity to prove themselves. Edge R Mason Thomas appears to have a direct path to a starting spot, getting plenty of work with the first team. Its something of a surprise that a second-rounder has earned the trust of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo so quickly. But theres an even bigger surprise: rookie receiver Cyrus Allen. The Chiefs took Allen on Day 3 of the draft. And he has been sensational, according to reporters on the scene and the social-media video clips that have leaked out of camp. "The quarterbacks trust him," Andy Reid told reporters. Most importantly, Patrick Mahomes trusts Allen. Kansas City doesnt exactly have proven entities at receiver, even with Xavier Worthy having his first-round status and even with Rashee Rice producing when hes on the field. (Because Rice cant seem to stay on the field between his injuries and his suspension.) Its early. But Allen is making a surprising push to get a real workload and target share. And then there are other names popping into the starting lineup, per The Athletics Jesse Newell. The Chiefs are experimenting with tackle Kahlil Benson and receiver Andrew Armstrong, among others. Its likely that the Chiefs are thinking about the long haul of the season. That probably means the rookie work is to 1) rest veterans and 2) give young players exposure in the event of an injury. But given the way GM Brett Veach has a tendency to find draft gems beyond the first round, its likely that well see the Chiefs get major contributions from rookies, perhaps even relatively unknown ones. For all you fantasy football owners out there, Allen might just be one of those guys to monitor and draft. When it comes to the 2025 quarterback draft class, Jayden Daniels has turned into the forgotten man. Theres all this hype about Drake Maye, who is fresh off a Super Bowl appearance. Theres all this hype about Bears QB Caleb Williams, appearing on the Madden cover after nearly taking down the Rams in overtime. Theres hype for Bo Nix, whose ankle injury left us wondering "what if" as the Broncos mightve been capable of winning the AFC Championship if theyd only had their QB. Even J.J. McCarthy is holding up against Kyler Murray in a QB competition in Minnesota. And McCarthy as rough as he was last year is stirring national conversation. Daniels who missed 10 games in 2025 due to a dislocated left elbow, a knee sprain and a hamstring strain isnt really making headlines. Expectations are low for him and his Commanders. Im not here to say that Washington is going to shock people this year, but I do wonder what Daniels can do for this offense under new OC David Blough. Daniels doesnt have a proven weapon on offense other than two-time Pro Bowl receiver Terry McLaurin. How much can Daniels do? The good news is that Washington's defense looks totally rebuilt and with legitimate starters. So Id at least hope the Commanders can be pesky, in part because of their rebuilt defense but also because their young QB will have reinserted himself into the discussion as one of the league elite signal callers, like he did at the end of the 2024 season (and playoffs).

With the Phillies latest trade-deadline splash, Bryce Harper is likely to be playing a different position down the stretch. According to MLB.com, Harper will likely move from first base to the outfield the rest of the season for Philadelphia. That is because the Phillies added an impact bat at first base early on Monday morning. The Phillies acquired infielder Luis Arraez, a three-time batting champion, on Monday. Arraez has played primarily first and second base in his career, and he is expected to man first in Philadelphia. Bryson Stott will move from second base to third, while Alec Bohm will move from third base to first. That creates an opening for Arraez at second base, which is where he has played most of this season for the Giants. All of that means Harper will likely go back to his roots as an outfielder. He brought his outfield glove on the Phillies last road trip, indicating he was ready to make the move. It sounds like it will now become a reality. Harper underwent Tommy John surgery before the 2023 season. Since then, he has not played in the outfield. He also had elbow surgery in 2022, so he was mostly a designated hitter when healthy that year. Harper has played 947 games in right field in his career, more than any other position in the big leagues. He has played 415 times at first base and 207 games as a designated hitter. At the plate this season, Harper has remained a consistent contributor, even though his batting average has continued to dip. Hes hitting .255, which would be his lowest number since 2018, but his .858 OPS entering play on Monday is still quite respectable. The Phillies have started the second half slowly at 5-10, and theyre now 8.0 games behind the Braves for first place in the National League East. Philadelphia has a one-game lead over the Padres for the third and final NL wild-card spot entering play on Monday.

But after a few years of cobbling together winning teams, here are a few Dos and Don'ts to simplify things when trying to build a squad.It's More About Profiles...Not NamesAdmittedly, disregarding a players name and focusing on their production sounds exactly like something a nerd like myself would suggest. Puka Nacua and Colston Loveland (featured in the top-10 plays) are two of the best at their position. We should value them accordingly. But the other side of that coin is the notion their production (not talent) is unique. In turn, if you dont draft that particular player, youve fallen behind. However, you can find similar levels of opportunity elsewhere.Round 1 (2021-2025): 28.2% (med. WR target %), 29.9% (med. RB touch %)Round 2: 25.0%, 30.3%Round 3: 19.5%, 26.9%Round 4: 20.8%, 23.9%Round 5: 20.7%, 23.0%Round 6: 20.4%, 25.4%I sampled the last five years of ADP and usage stats to see how the looks and totes have spread out over the early rounds. There are two takeaways here. One, the first couple of rounds are important! Youre likeliest to find players with the best chance at high-end workloads to kick off your draft. Second, and more important, the target and touch rates flatten out. In other words, weve got options should our plans (inevitably) go awry. Lets look at a portion of the current WR ADP for an example.Zay Flowers, BAL: 40.9 (ADP), WR17 (ADP Rank)Ladd McConkey, LAC: 45.9, WR18Jaylen Waddle, DEN: 46.3, WR19The dizzying part for gamers coming into the 26 season cold is that theyll have information overload and experience analysis paralysis.Zay Flowers is primed to break out with Lamar Jackson healthy.Ladd McConkey in a Mike McDaniel offense? WR1 season loading.Jaylen Waddle fits the type of offense Sean Payton and Bo Nix want to run in Denver.Each has valid paths to finding themselves inside the top 12 by seasons end. But their profiles to date emphasize why focusing less on the jersey becomes important. Sure, Flowers has earned more of his teams targets since joining the league (25.5%), but both Flowers and Waddle are equally efficient with their touches (2.13 YPRR). Meanwhile, McConkey sits between the two in total end zone targets.Here's where tiers become a drafters savior. A way to bucket groups of players of the same position into a single section. By doing so, youre not only acknowledging the similarities between the subsets, but allowing yourself the flexibility to build around other players without damaging your prospects of taking down your league.Opportunity Cost Comes for Us AllLets build on this concept of looking at player profiles instead of adhering to name value. As I said a bit ago, clustering free agents together gives you more options when your strategy backfires. But it also allows you to pay a lesser cost for comparable production. Hes got more competent QB play. And the offensive architect of the Seahawks Super Bowl win, Klint Kubiak, is his head coach. Bowers was just the fourth rookie TE to earn first-team All-Pro honors since 1960. No wonder hes a second-round pick. But, again, lets look at the profile of an elite tight end.Team Target Rate: 0.83 (r value), 21.0% (median value)First Downs per Route Run: 0.81, 9.5%Yards per Route Run: 0.79, 1.79I used the last five years of data to find out which metrics correlated to finishing as a top-three TE. Intuitively, hoarding targets and being efficient with them stood out. Of course, Bowers surpassed the thresholds for all three benchmarks in 2024. And with an improved situation, you can see why drafters prefer him as the TE1. But lets look at the third-year receiver another way.Kenneth Walker III, KC, RB11Nico Collins, HOU, WR9George Pickens, DAL, WR10A.J. Brown, NE, WR8These are just a few examples, but all players drafted after Bowers. Said another way, here are the guys you wont get. Youre trading the opportunity to add to your RB or WR stable for a TE. And the cost is an even-money bet. The TE1 has finished as the (equivalent) WR8 or better in four of the last five years. If you want a top-three TE, they just need to be a top-24 receiver. And Bowers is certainly capable of scoring more PPG than Luther Burden III. However, so are some other guys.Tyler Warren, IND (Weeks 1-10): 52.7 (ADP), 21.3% (Target Rate), 9.9% (1D/RR), 2.04 (YPRR)Tucker Kraft, GB (Weeks 1-7): 70.3, 20.6%, 11.2%, 2.49Kyle Pitts Sr., ATL: 72.7, 22.7%, 9.5%, 1.72Admittedly, Warren and Kraft come with injury caveats. The Colts might have cleared Daniel Jones for training camp, but thats one bet in a multi-leg parlay for them to get back to their offensive dominance during the first half of 25. And Krafts eight-game sample clashes with his absurd ability to create after the catch (9.0 YAC per reception). Regardless, combining profiles with draft price brings us another idea to consider. And its not just applicable to TEs.Josh Allens rushing and passing acumen has made him a staple of the third round. But Jalen Hurts, available a few rounds later, rushed more often (17.8% QB rushing rate vs 17.1%) and scored more FPPG as a thrower than Allen (13.4 to 13.2). Tyler Shough and Brock Purdy, with scramble rates and passing efficiency, fall even further. In either case, by finding these arbitrage plays, you can add more strength to your roster elsewhere before focusing on the positions that only require a single weekly starter.The Middle and Late Rounds Arent Just for Adding DepthIve hinted at this throughout, but be sure to take your shots at WRs and RBs in the early stages of the draft. Yes, weve gone through ways to identify comparable players at lower prices. But with an early ADP comes some certainty.Here's a look at the decline of expected fantasy points for WR and RB.Chris AllenNo surprise, but theres a sharp decline in expected fantasy points at the core positions as we get farther into the draft. In short, we have a better sense of their projected workload or involvement within their respective passing games. However, where theres uncertainty, it breeds an opportunity for savvy drafters to stock their starters and bench with high-upside players.Rounds 7-10: 45.5% (WR hit rate), 41.7% (RB hit rate)Rounds 11-14: 51.0%, 45.5%Rounds 15-20: 41.5%, 54.0%I looked at how often a receiver or rusher met or exceeded their draft cost. The larger takeaway is that we see hit rates rising as we get into the later rounds. On its face, the idea conflicts with our earlier premise. Were paying for certainty along with our fantasy points. However, not every committees hierarchy remains permanent. The Steelers backfield from last year is one of many examples. But lets look at the 2026 landscape to find a few worth monitoring with training camps underway.Vikings: Aaron Jones 113.2 (ADP), Jordan Mason - 123.5Broncos: RJ Harvey 87.8, J.K. Dobbins 99.9Commanders: Rachaad White 113.2, Jacory Croskey-Merritt 119.7Steelers: Jaylen Warren 81.3, Rico Dowdle 89.7Patriots: TreVeyon Henderson 54.8, Rhamondre Stevenson 89.0The New England backfield should carry the most attention since the last time we saw the offense was in the Super Bowl. However, it was the weeks leading up to the final game that have me targeting the veteran over the sophomore rusher.Rush Share: 67% (w/ Stevenson injured), 50% (w/ Stevenson back), 32% (playoffs)Route Rate: 69%, 28%, 25%Target Share: 13%, 6%, 8%When the team stakes were at their peak, OC Josh McDaniels relied on Stevenson. Even when New England couldve used a spark from Henderson to keep their championship hopes alive, the rookie played second fiddle as Seattles defense kept them at bay. And with Stevenson discussing his continued usage as a receiver, the gap in ADP between him and Henderson will be a gift for drafters willing to take the RB2.Regardless, analogous situations exist across the league, even with WRs. The Jacksonville WR room will pay off for somebody (Im stubborn and betting on Brian Thomas Jr.). We viewed Rome Odunze as a WR1 coming out of college, but Luther Burden III has that title for fantasy purposes. The list continues. But its our job as fantasy managers to sift through each to determine where the value lies.

The Philadelphia Phillies took a big swing early Monday, acquiring three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants to create RBI opportunities for sluggers Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, according to multiple reports.Arraez is hitting an NL-best .324 in a resurgent season after signing a $12 million, one-year deal with San Francisco early in spring training. The 29-year-old has his highest batting average since 2023, and he's played better defense at second base after questions about his glove hindered his market in free agency.Schwarber is second in the majors with 33 home runs entering Monday yet ranks 31st with 63 RBIs, while Harper has driven in 66. The team's .304 on-base percentage is the second lowest in the majors.Philly also got reliever Caleb Kilian back from the Giants in the trade for two minor leaguers, and it swung a separate deal for left-handed reliever Brooks Raley with the New York Mets, according to multiple reports.The Los Angeles Dodgers woke up already looking like the deadline's biggest winners after adding two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal to a loaded roster Sunday. The Dodgers are chasing a third straight World Series title.Over in the American League, Tampa Bay beefed up its rotation Sunday by adding right-hander Freddy Peralta while the New York Yankees acquired young slugger Luis Garca Jr. to give their Aaron Judge-less lineup a little more pop. Also on Sunday, the Chicago Cubs added Kevin Gausman to their rotation in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.The trade deadline is Monday at 6 p.m. EDT. Some enticing options still remain, including San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller and Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho.Other trades of note The Blue Jays bolstered their rotation with an eye on 2027 by acquiring right-hander Jos Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels for three prospects. Infielder Arjun Nimmala, a 2023 first-round pick, headlined the minor leaguers going to Los Angeles, along with outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr. and right-hander Angel Rivero. The Chicago White Sox added righty reliever Huascar Brazobn from the Mets for minor league right-handers Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin. The Phillies will send outfielder John Spikerman and right-handed pitcher Luke Gabrysh to the Mets in that swap.Arraez, who led the American League with a .324 batting average, would inject production into a Phillies lineup that has the fourth-worst batting average in the National League.Arraez, who won batting titles in 2022 and 2023, owns a career .318 mark, the best among active players.
