Mainz 05 prepared to push financial limits in pursuit of permanent Stefan Posch purchase
Mainz 05 prepared to push financial limits in pursuit of permanent Stefan Posch purchaseMainz 05, in something of a reversal of the operating plan earlier this summer, are working to bring Austrian international Stefan Posch back to the Bundesliga on a permanent basis. Sky Germany reports that the Rheinhessen club have opened negotiations with Serie A side Como 1907 following the conclusion of Poschs successful six-month loan. Mainz are reportedly prepared to stretch their financial limits to secure the 29-year-old defender.Mainz were recently buoyed by the fact that Nadiem Amiri opted to remain with the club through the entirety of the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign. Signing Posch would constitute another major coup. Thanks to the fact that the clubs front office has been largely frugal on the summer transfer market, the Palatinate club is currently operating with an estimated 5.2m transfer surplus.Mainz worked through complex Posch deal in JanuaryMainz first explored a move for Posch during the winter transfer window after he struggled for regular playing time in Italy. The final transaction ultimately required cooperation between three clubs. Como activated an obligation to purchase Posch from Bologna for approximately 5.5m before immediately loaning the defender to Mainz for the remainder of the campaign.Mainz did not secure a purchase option. The Bundesliga club reportedly paid a loan fee of approximately 200,000, leaving M05 sporting CEO Christian Heidel and his colleagues needing to negotiate an entirely new agreement this summer.Posch nevertheless made an immediate impact. He started against Wolfsburg only two days after his arrival and delivered a composed performance in a crucial victory, as noted in Get German Football News Mainz January transfer check. The defenders familiarity with German football helped him settle quickly. Posch had already accumulated more than 100 Bundesliga appearances during his previous spell with Hoffenheim before moving to Serie A in 2022.Stefan Posch became a central figure in Mainz back threeThe Austrian subsequently started all 16 of Mainzs remaining Bundesliga matches. His experience, physicality, and ability to defend on the right side of a back three made him a central figure in Urs Fischers system. Mainz were fighting relegation when Posch arrived but ultimately recovered to finish tenth. By April, the club were already openly working to keep their defensive anchor, with all parties expressing an interest in extending the partnership.Posch also delivered decisive moments during Mainzs historic Conference League run. He headed home the breakthrough goal in a 20 round-of-16 victory over Sigma Olomouc before thanking the clubs supporters for helping drive the team into its first European quarter-final. The defender and Danny da Costa subsequently credited the awesome and outstanding MEWA Arena atmosphere in a post-match interview.Posch then produced an even more spectacular finish against Racing Strasbourg. His acrobatic volley helped Mainz secure a 20 first-leg quarter-final victory and further strengthened the sporting case for a permanent transfer.Financial challenge remainsComos willingness to negotiate provides Mainz with encouragement, but the Italian club will expect appropriate compensation for a player acquired permanently only in January. Mainz must therefore find a fee and payment structure capable of satisfying Como without compromising the remainder of their summer planning. The players desire to return could prove particularly important should Mainz require Como to reduce its initial demands or accept the fee across several installments. In any event, CEO Heidel has confirmed to a local source that die Nullfnfter are in talks with the Serie A outfit. This is definitely still on the table, Heidel told the Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung. Posch wont resume training with Como until Monday. We would like to make this happen and now need to see whether we can find a solution with Como that is acceptable to both sides. He would like to come back, and Como are, in principle, also open to talks.GGFN|Peter Weis

Fantasy Football Roundtable: Here's one thing our analysts did last season that they're approaching differently in 2026
We all make mistakes. Sometimes they happen in life, at our jobs or even when playing fantasy football (believe it or not). Its important not to dwell on these mistakes and, instead, learn from them. Our Yahoo fantasy football analysts are sharing one thing they did in 2025 that they arent going to carry into 2026 for fantasy. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL seasonStop being dogmatic about prices Over the years I've become especially value-driven with my salary cap drafts. I'm trying to leverage the market, I'm trying to find under-appreciated players. There's nothing wrong with that strategy, but often I come out with rosters that are more about leftovers than they are about players I actually like. This year I'm going to try to remember that it's okay to overpay occasionally for a player I really believe in, or a player I especially need at the time. Plus, heck, you're supposed to assemble a team you're going to enjoy following for several months. Don't forget to have some fun with it, too. Scott PianowskiBelieve Im smarter than a good play-caller on his handpicked quarterbackIts probably a bit of a stretch to call Daniel Jones Shane Steichens handpicked guy but at the same time, it was pretty clear that the Colts were putting their thumb on the scale to make him the heavy favorite in last years camp competition. Regardless, I allowed my own bias about how Jones had played over the last couple of seasons to essentially prevent a ceiling outcome from even crossing my mind. I ended up losing out on chances at significant value for multiple Colts playersmany of whom I had been a long-time defender of like Alec Pierce and Michael Pittman Jr.late in fantasy drafts. Generally, if a sharp play-caller like Steichen taps a reclamation project passer who has shown positive signs in their career, we should be open to the possibility they bring some ADP beats up along with them. This season, Im keeping my mind open to Kyler Murray reviving the Vikings offense, should he indeed prove to be Kevin OConnells Week 1 starter. Matt HarmonUnderstand that Year 3 players are still young, even if they havent broken out yetJaxon Smith-Njigba is the perfect example working behind or next to DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett for his opening two seasons. Very few memorable plays stood out. His role was more restricting than we hoped. It was easy to think we already knew what he was as an NFL player. Nico Collins was another perfect example back in 2023. But before the Year 2 breakout there was the Year 3 breakout. Before we believed the best fantasy assets performed at their peak player immediately, we actually had some patience especially in new situations. Whether that be a seismic coaching staff change in the form of a new play-caller, a new starting quarterback they are attached to or a sociable shift in the pecking order and sometimes even all of the above. So Rome Odunze, Marvin Harrison Jr., Ladd McConkey, Xavier Worthy and Jonathon Brooks you are on my radar. Josh NorrisOver-factoring injury concern for late-round draft picksIf you want to fade Malik Nabers or Joe Burrow because of injury concerns, I get it, theyre going early and theres still a lot of talent left on the board. However, once we get into the later rounds, it should become much less of the thought process. If a player has a clear projected volume advantage compared to other later picks, such as Chris Olave being the No. 1 WR in New Orleans, that should be the focus. The risk to upside payoff is well worth it at that point of the draft. This season also comes with late-round options that have proven to have plenty upside alongside their increased injury risk. Dalton Kincaid at TE11, Jonathon Brooks at RB36, Jordyn Tyson at WR34 or Christian Watson at WR29. They could be a zero, but if they hit, the impact is much more of a difference-maker than the risk of them being late-round dud. Joel SmythBe bolder when nitpicking rookie roles out of training campIts scary to be the negative one about a rookies role in camp and preseason because theres very clearly upside, but there is also the realism of the cost that must be factored in. Last year, there were negative signs in August on TreVeyon Henderson (44th overall ADP), Travis Hunter (57th), RJ Harvey (60th), Matthew Golden (66th), Kaleb Johnson (79th) and others just outside the top-100 overall. This group as a whole busted, and if we took them a little more seriously, rather than just rolling with What if?!, then wed be on the players who were literally 1-2s spot behind them like Jameson Williams, Zay Flowers, Chris Olave and Patrick Mahomes. We all knew those players were great players without playing time concerns. If those rookies turned out to be those players long term, then that would be the top 20th percentile outcome. Its okay to feel like youre missing out on rookies if both things are true: 1) their ADPs are high, 2) their playing time seems uncertain. Im eager to keep reading about Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price, Carnell Tate and Makai Lemon this month. Hayden WinksSecond-guess drafting an entire backfield when all its RBs are available in the late roundsLast year, every Cowboys running back was being taken outside of the top 100, but many people in the fantasy community, including myself, were reluctant to spend multiple late-round picks on that group. In hindsight, Javonte Williams ended up being one of the best values in fantasy, finishing as the RB13 in per game scoring. Drafting players from ambiguous backfields is something I do often, so the fact Williams slipped through the cracks is still baffling. Never again. This year, we have several RB depth charts in a similar position with the Commanders (Jacory Croskey-Merrritt, Rachaad White, Kaytron Allen) and the Vikings (Jordan Mason, Aaron Jones, Demond Claiborne) all being drafted after the first 100 picks are off the board. Even the Broncos trio (J.K. Dobbins, RJ Harvey, Jonah Coleman) tends to be available in the ninth round or later. Dont hesitate to fire multiple deep shots at the same backfield in hopes of landing yourself a starting back at a massive discount, regardless of how you feel about their outlooks. Justin Boone

    Cincinnati Reds Trade Deadline Tracker
CINCINNATI, OHIO - APRIL 12: General manager Nick Krall of the Cincinnati Reds presents Elly De La Cruz #44 with the 2024 Cincinnati Reds Team MVP award before the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ball Park on April 12, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images) | Getty ImagesThe deadline for Major League Baseball teams to make trades during the 2026 season is today Monday, August 3rd at 6:00 PM ET, and the Cincinnati Reds presumably have a lot of business to take care of between now and then. The currently sit at 53-58, mired in last place in the National League Central some 16 games adrift of the Milwaukee Brewers. Despite their recent best efforts, they also sit 5.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot, with six teams theyd need to jump to earn their way into a playoff spot. With seven guys who are set to reach free agency at seasons end, all signs point to the Reds being active sellers in the next few hours. Guys like Brady Singer, Tyler Stephenson, Eugenio Suarez, Caleb Ferguson, Brock Burke, Pierce Johnson, and Nate Lowe are all expected to be shopped aggressively, and theres the off-chance that Nick Krall and Co. opt to cash-in on players with more team control (i.e. Hunter Greene or JJ Bleday) in order to help restock the farm.Well be following all the developments here at Red Reporter HQ, and here will be the clearinghouse where you can follow with us. Maybe, just maybe, the front office will find a way to unload KeBryan Hayes!
