Changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement have caused the holdout to become the hold-in, where players who want new deals show up but don't practice until they get their contracts.It's less about withholding services and more about avoiding injury. And the teams typically go along with it, to a point, even if they could (if they wanted) play hardball and tell the player to get to work.For the players who are negotiating deals and choose to practice, there's a calculated risk. It came up last night in the context of Packers tight end Tucker Kraft, who'll practice without an extension as he re-establishes himself after a torn ACL suffered last November.Other players who are practicing without new deals surely have their reasons. But it's still a risk.Consider the comments of Patriots coach Mike Vrabel regarding cornerback Christian Gonzalez practicing while negotiating."Listen, weve talked about this contract," Vrabel said. "Itll either get done, and when it gets done, thatll be the progress thats made. Everybody thats involved is working hard. I cannot express the professionalism that Gonzo has started camp with. Its clear that he wants to improve, that he wants to be the best at his craft and at that position. I think that hes made that known by the way hes come out here to practice."That's good. But here's the thing. If lightning strikes, as it tends to do during training camp, the negotiations will end. Immediately. And they won't continue until Gonzalez is back and able to show that he can perform at a high level.It's true for any player who has chosen to practice while negotiations happen. Gonzalez, Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, and any other player who is practicing while waiting for a new deal.

Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is eligible for an extension after completing his third season. It doesn't sound like one is coming any time soon. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft, Young is under contract through 2027 after Carolina picked up his fifth-year option in the spring. Panthers executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis spoke with the media in a Monday press conference, saying the club will keep extension discussions on Young and everyone else in-house. But Tilis characterized the situation as positive for Carolina.I would say [Young] ascended last year and theres still room for him to ascend, Tilis said. His ceiling, currently, is unknown and I think thats exciting for us. Hes working hard to get himself there.Tilis noted that the continuity with Dave Canales in his third year as head coach has put Young in a good situation to succeed in 2026.The team is better, the coaches are good, and Bryce is putting in the work, too, Tilis said. So, its all there. And well just see how the year plays out. I think were all really excited for what Bryce is going to show and how the teams going to be.Tilis was asked directly if seeing how the year plays out means Young will not receive a new deal before the start of the regular season, but Tilis again noted that the team will keep discussions in-house.While it has not all been with the same regime, Young already has three years of experience which is often enough time to have a clear picture of who a player is and what his ceiling might be. But Tilis said that in Youngs case, he wouldnt necessarily think that he should have a better read on the QBs future.The team is growing, too, Tilis said. So, hes going to ascend as the team ascends and vice versa the team is going to get better as he does. So, its all good.Young, 25, has started 44 games through his first three seasons. Hes completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 8,291 yards with 49 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Last season was his best, as he finished 2025 with a 63.6 percent completion rate, 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

College football may be around the corner, but that isn't stopping the other sports from making some news for themselves.According to a report from On3.com, Oregon men's basketball head coach Dana Altman has signed former Arkansas forward Malique Ewin to play for the Ducks in the 2026-27 season. The 6-foot-10, 240-pounder from Lawrenceville, GA will be a senior this year.After starting his career at Ole Miss, Ewin had his best season as a sophomore for Florida State in the 2024-25 campaign where he averaged 14 points and 7.6 rebounds a game. He then moved on to Arkansas, where his numbers dipped, but Ewin still had a respectable season for the Razorbacks, averaging 10 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Arkansas finished 28-9 last season. They lost in the Sweet 16 to Arizona in the NCAA tournament.Ewin will provide some much-needed inside bulk for the Ducks this coming season as they look to replace center Nate Bittle. He'll also bring some senior leadership to a relatively younger team and will make a duo with Sean Stewart on the inside, both offensively and defensively.
