Of course, the level of competition makes a difference and who really knows what we were getting with the teams that Purdue played. Purdue dominated all their opponents which ultimately is the point of any athletic contest, right? So, after youve checked out the box scores, maybe you watched the games on Youtube, maybe you caught up via some great comments in The Feed, maybe you read Jeds thoughts about the games on this very sight, but what does it all mean? This season was always going to be a strange one for the Boilermakers. They are losing a generational group of three (plus one) seniors who were so fundamental to the program that its hard to figure out how it will impact the team. As in all sports, NFL teams need to hit on their draft picks, as their rosters are so expansive. It is imperative to leave a draft class with at least one to two starters and to be able to find depth pieces to support. In recent years, the Minnesota Vikings have struggled to find an abundance of quality, as Minnesota has drafted 28 players since 2022, and only four have turned out to be starters.However, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, the rookies are showing out so far in training camp, with love being given to the later-round picks as well. Here are some of Lewis' thoughts:Early returns look promising. First-round pick Caleb Banks responded from left foot surgery and is already mixing in with the starters. Second-round linebacker Jake Golday tipped a pass Saturday, evoking shades of edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel.There has been positivity from the later-round picks, too. Assistant head coach Frank Smith spent some time after Saturdays practice reviewing techniques with fullback Max Bredeson. Cornerback Chuck Demmings blanketed Jefferson and deflected a pass. Safety Jakobe Thomas continues to show up in all areas of Brian Flores defense, and undrafted safety Jacob Thomas tends to play right alongside him.This was a defensive-heavy draft class, and it is a promising sign to see that the bulk of the picks are performing well so far. It will be fascinating to see them in action in the preseason to see just how far they have come. NFL fans are always enthusiastic about the return of football even if it's just the preseason. With that in mind, the 2026 preseason begins on Thursday, Aug. 6, with the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. This year's exhibition will feature the Arizona Cardinals and the Carolina Panthers. Let's dive into the odds ahead of the Hall of Fame Game as of Aug. 3. And 73% of the money is on the score to eclipse the Over of 35.5. From a historical perspective, the Panthers' only other appearance in the Hall of Fame Game came in 1995. In that game, Carolina faced fellow expansion team Jacksonville, getting the 20-14 victory over the Jaguars. The Cardinals, on the other hand, are Hall of Fame Game veterans. The 2026 game will mark Arizona's sixth time playing in Canton, and the franchise comes into the exhibition with a 1-3-1 record. Regarding regular-season records, the Panthers come into this matchup after going 8-9 in 2025. They secured first place in the NFC South but fell to the Rams in the Wild Card round, 34-31. The Cardinals didn't fare nearly as well as the Panthers did last season. Arizona notched a dismal 3-14 record, finishing 16th overall in the NFC.

To be fair to the Rays which doesnt feel natural, but whatever theyre also at -$1500. Both teams are ahead of the Phillies at +1900, the Cubs at +2200 and the Angels and Mets at a cool +100000 each. (Perhaps you can predict baseball.?) Anyhow, the Yankees are the only team with shorter odds in the AL than the Sox and the Rays at +600. But they stink, so all is fine.However this season ends, its reignited a spark around here that hasnt been lit since 2021 and hasnt roared in nearly 10 years. The Blue Jays were two outs away from winning it all last year and changing the whole labor narrative, some say, tho ultimately I dont think by much. Meaning the Sox have a shot. While I love that the Dodgers (a preposterous +160) do their thing, theyre up against a emboldened, whiny club of failsons whove had it out for them from the word go and this is something of a last stand. The only thing that can bring the Dodgers down, seemingly, is the Sox, who just swept them in LA. Theyre now Sox likely to make the playoffs (-950) and are closing in on the division (Rays -110, Yankees +155) at +430. The sportsbooks plainly recognize, respect and reflect Bress ambition. The reward is ours.

All season openers are Aug. 28.1. Tyler Winkles (Acalanes-Lafayette)The incoming senior was second-team All-Metro last season when he threw for 2,716 yards and rushed for 356 more while accounting for 35 touchdowns. Beyond a live arm, the excellent field general and baseball prospect has been timed at 11.1 seconds in the 100 meters, and 4.47 in the 40-yard dash. He led the Dons to 11-1 mark last season under then first-year coach Joel Isaac. Season opener:at Mitty.2. JaVale Jones (Pittsburg)After he split time as a sophomore with then-senior Carlos Torres, Jones should put up huge numbers, especially throwing to the region's top receiver, another junior in Kenneth Ward. Jones was super accurate, completing 110 of 156 last season for 1,459 yards and 15 touchdowns. The 6-foot, 170-pounder has an offer from Boston College.Season opener:vs. Monterey Trail-Elk Grove.3. William Orr (Clayton Valley Charter-Concord)Hasn't quite accomplished as much as others on the list, but the 6-2, 200-pound sophomore is definitely on everyone's radar after transferring from Serra where he threw for 891 yards and rushed for 204 more while splitting time as a freshman. Now under first-year coach Nate Kenion, Orr is a top 2029 talent on a very intriguing team. Season opener:at American Canyon.4. Cole Dawes (San Ramon Valley-Danville)The 6-foot, 175-pound senior adds to a long line of standout SRV signal-callers mentored by coach Aaron Becker. Threw for 2,226 yards and 24 touchdowns last season. Poised and polished, Dawes is also a top baseball prospect. Season opener: at El Cerrito.5. LT Retamoza (Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa)A collarbone injury hindered the 6-2, 200-pound junior's sophomore season after a stellar freshman campaign when he accounted for nearly 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns. This will be Newman's third coaching regime in three seasons, but the Cardinals are absolutely stacked with a long line of talented returners and transfers for first-year head coach Kenny McMillan and associate head coach Sean Embree. Season opener: at Folsom.6. Dylan Skrinar (Marin Catholic-Kentfield)Another North Bay juggernaut will be led by an experienced junior after the 6-foot, 180-pounder completed 168 of 267 for 2,131 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. He also showed good mobility and rushed for two scores. Under Mazi Moayed, who coached Jared Goff at Marin Catholic, the perennial North Coast Section power looks to rebound from its first losing season (5-6) since 2007. Season opener: at Monte Vista-Danville.7. Ethan Havens (College Park-Pleasant Hill)The 6-4, 210-pounder completed 153 of 269 passes last season as a junior for 2,382 yards and 25 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. An excellent student (4.4 GPA) and athlete, he also rushed for 248 yards (including sacks) and four scores and was the team's punter and kicker. Season opener:vs. Beckman-Irvine (Orange County).8. Dejuan Compton Jr. (El Cerrito)El Cerrito's surprising 11-3 season capped by a rather shocking state 4-A championship was largely keyed by the development of the then burly 5-11, 210-pound sophomore, who completed 19 of 27 for 265 yards and four touchdowns in the state finals, a 35-12 win over Beckman-Irvine. He won't have All-Metro receiver Gary Youngblood to throw to but the Gauchos should have plenty of offensive weapons. Season opener:vs. San Ramon Valley.9. Drew Cumby (St. Francis)The West Catholic Athletic League Sophomore of the Year last season figures to let it loose a bit more after accounting for more than 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns. Season opener: vs. Manteca.10. Isaac Liu (St. Ignatius)The 5-10, 170-pound sophomore was very impressive as a freshman for the defending NorCal and state Division 3-AA champion, completing 63% of his 91 passes in seven games. With starter Caeson Afsharipour graduated and second-year coach JuJuan Lawson, a former college quarterback, mentoring him. Liu should make a significant jump. Tarik Skubal doesnt think the Los Angeles Dodgers are ruining baseball. Not even close.Every team could trade for me, every team could make that acquisition, Skubal said on Monday, via the California Post, just days after the Dodgers made the blockbuster deal to grab the two-time Cy Young winner from the Detroit Tigers. In return, the Tigers received three future prospects.Skubal has spent the past nine seasons with the Tigers organization. Hes looked back to peak form quickly this year, too, after undergoing surgery earlier this year to remove loose bodies in his elbow. He posted a 2.03 ERA in fine starts in July while striking out 41 batters.Now, the Dodgers will be the first team in MLB history to have a reigning two-time MVP, in Shohei Ohtani, and a reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner appear for them in the same season.That alone is enough to leave fans of other teams frustrated. But when looking at the other major moves that the Dodgers have made in recent years including signing Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Kyle Tucker and others its easy to see why some may criticize the organization, and the league itself for allowing teams to spend the way the Dodgers do. The Dodgers are one of just two teams spending more than $300 million during the 2026 campaign. By comparison, there are six teams who arent even at $100 million.And, the Dodgers already had one of the best rotations in Major League Baseball. President Andre Friedman even said on Sunday that this wasnt an acute need for the team at the deadline.But, at least in Skubals eyes, its not the Dodgers spending thats led them to back-to-back World Series wins. Hes not buying that argument.Instead, its everything else theyve done.I dont really sympathize with people that blame the Dodgers for anything theyve done, he said. Theyve developed a really good organization. They draft well. They acquire talent really well. They retain talent. Its a winning organization. Now the complaints seem to be [happening] because theyve won the last two World Series. I dont think it was like that three years ago. So I dont really sympathize with people that are complaining. Because the Dodgers do all the right things.Skubals comments echoed what Friedman said on Sunday when asked if the team was bad for baseball.Passionately disagree, he said.Skubal is set to make his debut with the Dodgers on Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Skubal will hit free agency after this season, too, and is expected to land a deal well into nine figures. The Dodgers, especially depending on how the next few months go, are sure to be in the running to keep him around long-term.But Skubal isnt ready to deal with that yet, either.Im really not gonna talk about the business side of whats happening with me, he said. Obviously, I understand free agency. But Id really like the message to be just, Im excited to be here and learn everything about the Dodgers and all these guys here.
